Le mille vite del compensato
Dal De Havilland Mosquito, I'aereo piu veloce della Seconda guerra mondiale, alla WikiHouse l'abitazione in legno tutta fal-da-te, grazie a disegni e istruzioni scaricabili da Internet: sono oltre 120 gli oggetti raccolti nella mostra "Plywood" che, al Victoria and Albert Museum rende omaggio (15.7-12.11.2017) a uno dei materiali piu leggeri, resistenti, affidabili e versatili della modernità, illegno rnultistrato, II percorso curato da Christopher Wilk ed Elizabeth Bisley, prende Ie mosse dalia metà dell'Ottocento e arriva fino ai nostri giorni, passando per Ie icone modemiste quelle di Aalto, Breuer ed Eames, per intenderei. A completare la rassegna, nel giardino del museo è stah ricostruita la spettacolare struttura di Patkau Architect che offre riparo e conforto ai pattinatori tra i ghiacci di Winnipeg.

THE COUNTLESS LIVES OF PLYWOOD From the De Havilland Mosquito, the fastest plane during WWII, to the WikiHouse, the DIY wooden norr» thanks to drawings and instructions downloaded off the Internet Over 120 objects in the exhibition "Plywood" that, at the Victoria & Albert Museum (15.7 1211.2017), pays tribute to one of today's liqhtest, most resistant, trustworthy and versatile materials: multilayer wood. The itinerary, curated by Christopher Wilk and Elizabeth Bisley, begins from the mid-180Ds and reaches today and includes the most famous modernist design pieces - like those by Aalto, Breuer and Eames. The museum's garden hosts a spectacuk reconstruction by Patkau Architects offering shelter and comfort to skaters amidst the Winnipeg ice. www.vam.ac.uk

Analogie en kopie (bewust / onbewust) Hoe komt het dat zo veel moderne en hedendaagse kunstwerken op elkaar lijken? Kopiëren kunstenaars elkaar, en eo ja, doen ze dit bewust of onbewust? Klopt bet dat jonge kunstenaars steeds vaker onbewuste kopies van bestaande kunstwerken produceren? Wordt de kunstgeschiedenis steeds 'subliminaier' gerecipieerd? Deze vragen vormden de aanleiding voor dit nummer. In het openingsessay vertrekt Oliver Sacks van een 'valse' kinderherinnering om verschillende voorbeelden te bespreken van schrijvers die zich het werk van anderen zo hadden eigengemaakt dat zij het voor het hunne aanzagen. Is dU 'pnbewuste kopieergedrag' problematisch? In extreme gevallen wel, maar tegelijk vormt een dergelijke 'onverschilligheid over de bron' een noodzakelijke voorwaarde om een relevante bijdrage aan de cultuur en de kunst tot stand te brengen, aldus Sacks. Vooral de creativiteit van kunstenaars 'heeft zulke vergeetachtigheid nodig, zodat herinneringen en ideeën opnieuwopkomen en in nieuwe contexten en perspectieven geplaatst worden', Zonder 'onbewust plagiaat' is originele kunst onmogelijk: het is een pittige conclusie intijden waarin het originaliteitsbegrip nog steeds hoogtij viert. Agentschap (Kobe Matthys) presenteert een rechtszaak die volledig draait om de notie van de 'onbewuste kopie',ln 1971 werd ex-Beatle George Harrison van plagiaat heschuldtad. Pa.radoxaal genoeg oordeelde äe rechter dat George Harrison slechts 'onbewust' had gekopieerd ... maar niettemin schuldig was. Raphaël Pirenne en Dirk Pilltau jnterviewden kunstenaar Michel François over het tentooosteIliogsproject.Faux Turneallx [Valse tw""lJlIgell] (S.M.A.K.. Gent. oktober 2008' -januari 2010), dat rond frappante gelijkenissen tussen kunstwerken draaide. Wat François interesseerde was echter niet de kwestie van de (on)bewuste kopie, wel integendeel: voor hem ging het erom dat 'die vormovereenkomsten ons ertoe dwingen om naar de inhoud en de context van die werken te kijken, en te achterhalen hoe ze van elkaar verschillen.' Prançots' klemtoon op de 'onaJhankelijkheid' van deze 'tweelingwerken' vormt in een tweede bijdrage van Agentschap uitgerekend het juridische argument om de beklaagde van schending van het auteursrecht vrij te pleiten: ondanks de frappante gelijkenissen tussen de twee omjthclogrschc vogelaquarellen waar deze zaak om draait, oordeelde de rechter dat er Diet gekopieerd was en dat 'beide schilderijen met hetzelfde thema [ ... ] onafhankelijk waren gemaakt'. Jorinde Seijdel ontdekte tot haar verhazing eenzelfde beeldfragment in twee totaal verschillende kunstwerken over al even uiteenlopende onderwerpen: de Hlms D-l-;I-L History (1997) van Johan Grimonprez (over vliegtuigkapingen en hun spectacularisering) en Raw Footage (2006) van Aernout Mik (over de oorlog in ex-Joegoslavië). 'Ondanks haar preoecupatie met de waarheid [... ] staat de kunst nict per se buiten of boven het 'post-truth' regime', luidt haar conclusie. Koen Seis bezocht de tentoonstelling Copy Construct van Kasper Andreasen in Cultuurcentrum Mechelen en stelde vast dat de op reproductie en kopie gebaseerde kunstwerken uit de expo in hun materialiteit ook unieke exemplaren vormen. Daniël Rovers zag een dubbelexpo (Museum Arnhem/Stedelijk Museum Schiedam) over Pierre Janssen, de presentator van het legendarische televisieprogramma Kunstgrepen (1959·1975), en verbaasde etch over het vanuit hedendaags perspectief ongehoord improvtsatcrtscbe en 'ongeformarteerde' karakter van de uitzendingen. Naar aanleiding van een retrospectieve in het Bonnefantenmuseum (M"aastricht) anaIyseert Christophe Van Gerrewey de onmogelijke combinaties in het getekende oeuvre van Raymond Pettibon.

OLIVER SACKS In 1993, net voor mijn zestigste verjaardag, beleefde ik een wonderlijk fenomeen - vroege herinneringen kwamen opeens spontaan in mijn bewustzijn naar boven, herinneringen die meer dan vijftig jaar hadden liggen sluimeren. En niet alleen herinneringen, vooral aan mijn jongensjaren in Londen net voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog, maar ook de
geestesgesteldheden, gedachten, sferen en verlangens die daarmee verbonden waren. Naar aanleiding van die emotionele ervaring schreef ik twee korte biografische schetsen, een over de prachtige wetenschapsmusea van Sonth Kensington, die in mijn jeugd een veel belangrijkere plek innamen dan mijn school: de andere over Humphry Davy, een vroegnegentiende-eeuwse chemicus die in die tijd een held van me was, en wiens experimenten, beschreven in een ont-
zettend levendige stijl, me enthousiast maakten en me aanzetten tot emulatie. Door deze korte teksten werd waarschijnlijk een meer algemene autobiografische impuls opgewekt, eerder dan gestild. en aan het einde van 1997 begon ik aan een project van drie jaar waarin ik over mijn jongensjaren zou schrijven, een boek dat in 2001 verscheen onder de titel Uncle Tungsten.
