The Stockholm archipelago is a glacial remnant. The rock formation is cut and sand material is remainded and filled with silt on some places. It leaves a space with several island occupied and cultivated to the Stockholm we know. Through occupation each separate island had its own role depending on it’s location specifics. It defined a cultural and spatial variation. It leaves a city landscape with a lot of diffeent spaces and qualities due to a lot of contrast: formal vs informal and hard vs soft space.

A specific quality is found by the protected water supply. Outside of the city lies a natural reserve serving the cities watersupply. It’s also used for recreation purpose. The river from the city towards this bassin is closed of for transport to avoid poissoning of the reservoir.

SPATIAL QUALITY OF THE ARCHIPEL

One of the first cities that comes to mind when talking about a watercity it is Venice. A city in water. Actually, most of the city is a man-made construction.

Venice originated from a group of people called the Veneti who fled to islands in the lagoon when Italy was invaded by Attila the Hun in 453 A.D. They started the built of a settlement of houses on poles in the water.
