I

n 1998, the dreams of Beaver Creek’s visionaries came true and this community became host to the first ever “ski in, ski out” performing arts center. Since that time, the Vilar Center has built an honored tradition of hosting acclaimed performances that one would expect to see at Carnegie Hall in New York or the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., but might not expect to find tucked in among ski lifts, hiking trails and golf fairways. We not only present the best world-class entertainment, but in an intimate and inviting venue designed for perfect acoustics and unobstructed views from every seat. This venue is special – it’s something those of us who have been to the Vilar Center know well – and while it’s hard to put in words, we hope the words of some of our past performers will help convince you to come experience it for yourself this winter season. We hope to see you in our hall soon. Sincerely,

COMMUNITY FIRST

I

t’s a pleasure to present another season of diverse performances for our community and guests. As you view this program book I feel confident you will find many artists you know and want to see, and I hope some new ones that pique your interest enough to investigate further. What you may not see are the other events and programs that help define the VPAC as a performing arts center and speak to our role as a gathering place for our community. Through our STARS (Support The Arts Reaching Students) series, we present educational programs that make attending the performing arts part of the lives of our local children. The Community Performance Fund (CPF) provides opportunities for aspiring local artists to perform in our beautiful venue, with world-class production equipment and supported by our professional staff. With help from our generous donors and partners, we make the impossible possible as we strive to enhance and improve the lives of our community and our local youth. Sincerely,

KRIS SABEL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, VILAR PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

wo notes - that’s all it takes to recognize the incomparable voice of Michael McDonald. Distinctive and soulful, it is one of the most yearningly emotive instruments of our time. Add formidable songwriting and keyboard skills, and you have an artist who has been a singular musical presence for four decades. From ‘70s-era Doobie Brothers classics such as “What A Fool Believes” and solo hits like “I Keep Forgettin’,” through two highly-acclaimed Motown albums, genre-busting guest spots and innovative concept shows, the five-time Grammy® Award winning McDonald is both timeless and ever-evolving.

TAKÁCS QUARTET

R

ecognized as one of the world’s great ensembles, the Takács Quartet plays with a unique blend of drama, warmth and humor, combining four distinct musical personalities to bring fresh insights to the string quartet repertoire. In 2012, Gramaphone announced that the Takács was the only string quartet to be inducted into its first Hall of Fame, along with such legendary artists as Leonard Bernstein and Dame Janet Baker. This evening’s program has been hand-crafted for the VPAC audience following the quartet’s debut in Beaver Creek last winter. It will showcase their brilliant musicianship and versatility, paired perfectly with the acoustic beauty of the hall.

ure, in the abstract, a banjo duo might seem like a musical concept beset by limitations. But when the banjo players cast in those roles are Abigail Washburn and Béla Fleck – she with the earthy sophistication of a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter, he with the virtuosic, jazz-toclassical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots – it’s a different matter entirely. ANNA NETREBKO

A

nna Netrebko has redefined what it means to be an opera star, and in the process she has become the most acclaimed and widely recognized classical singer in the world today. Regularly headlining productions at virtually all the world’s leading opera houses, the Russian soprano has been hailed as “the reigning new diva of the early 21st century,” by the Associated Press. In 2007 she became the first classical musician to be included in Time 100, Time magazine’s list of the most influential people in the world. Her beautiful, dark, distinctive voice and her elegant and alluring stage presence have prompted critics to describe her as “a singer who simply has it all: a voice of astounding purity, precision, and scope, extensive dynamic and tonal range, imagination, insight, and wit – all combined with a dazzling charisma that makes it all but impossible to look away when she is performing.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

TEATRO LIRICO D’EUROPA PRESENTS PUCCINI’S

A

lready one of the most popular operas in the world, Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème has enjoyed an even greater resurgence due to the critical and commercial success of Broadways’ Rent. Jonathan Larson’s hit musical is based on the same story found at the heart of this powerful opera. Set in the 1830s, La Bohème opens with four bohemian artists struggling to find enough money to cover the rent for their tiny one-floor attic apartment in Paris. What follows is a heart-wrenching tale of love, loneliness and longing told through lyrical melodies, soaring arias and romantic themes.

MIKE MARSHALL AND EDGAR MEYER

S

ometimes all we really need is to sit on the back porch and listen to friends play music. We get that chance when two of America’s musical treasures, doublebass virtuoso Edgar Meyer and mandolinist and guitiarist Mike Marshall, bring us several of their own compositions and arrangements. It’s a vivid quiltwork of classical and other styles. Over these past two decades, they have developed a fully realized concept of the mandolin/bass duo. Edgar and Mike present a repertoire that spans the globe; from Bach duets to Brazilian choros, and from funky original pieces to their own twisted fiddle tunes.

N

icky Mehta (vocals, guitar, harmonica, drums, ukulele), Ruth Moody (vocals, guitar, accordion, banjo, bodhrán), and Heather Masse (vocals, upright bass) together make the heart-stopping harmonies of The Wailin’ Jennys. Starting as a happy accident of solo singer/songwriters getting together for a one-time-only performance at a tiny guitar shop, the trio has grown over the years into one of today’s most beloved international folk acts. Bolstered by their frequent appearances on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” the group exploded onto the roots music scene. The Wailin’ Jennys’ live performances bottle the lightning of their show-stopping harmonies, impressive instrumental prowess, breathtaking songs and, of course, witty stage banter.

I

t seems Arlo Guthrie, the son of legendary folksinger Woody Guthrie, was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps. And in the 1960s, he did just that when he released his debut album, “Alice’s Restaurant.” The title song premiered at the Newport Folk Festival and helped foster a new commitment among the ‘60s generation to social consciousness and activism. Reminisce on the 1960s and celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Alice’s Restaurant” at the VPAC with this concert by one of the decade’s most respected and celebrated musicians.

They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. The album features contributions from superstars Jason Mraz, Rob Thomas, Phil Collins, Dolly Parton and more! RECOGNIZING OUR GENEROUS SUPPORTERS

T

he Vilar Performing Arts Center (VPAC) enhances the quality of life for our community and guests by presenting a diverse, year-round lineup of cultural, educational and entertainment events and programs. Our education programs instill a life-long love and appreciation of the arts for our children and the VPAC serves as a gathering place for a variety of community events. As a non-profit organization, the VPAC depends on charitable contributions to operate, and we extend a sincere thank you to our donors and sponsors. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution today by stopping by our box office, visiting our website at www.vilarpac.org or calling 970-748-6670 and speaking with Development Officer Beth Pond.

Donors and volunteers provide support through the following programs: Patron and Grand Patron Society members provide broad-based funding for all of the programming and operational costs of the center. Underwriters provide funding that aligns with their particular interest in specific artists or genre of programming. The STARS (Support the Arts Reaching Students) program allows more than 7.000 local students to experience the thrill of live performing arts. The Community Performance

Fund (CPF) provides grants to local arts organizations so they can perform in our world-class venue. The Vilar Guild provides a critical link between the VPAC and our community, working to build awareness, accessibility and audience for all of our programs. The Vilar Center Volunteers give countless hours of their time to enhance our guest experience and to promote our programs.
