Director’s Note
In 1905, New York City was a melting pot of immigrants from the South, Europe, and the Caribbean. Issues of racism, classism, and gender bias crashed heavily against their hopes and dreams— not terribly different from America today.
In her award-winning play, Intimate Apparel, Lynn Nottage explores human relationships within that melting pot. She peels back the outer layers and delves deeply into the complexities of physical and emotional intimacy. Intimacy is expressed in words, touch, and actions, all centered around the exquisite undergarments Esther Mills sews for her clients. The intricate stitching of the corsets Esther sews symbolizes the delicate balance of connections she forms with the people in her life. Though the characters are diverse in every sense of the word, they share common struggles of love, longing, and loneliness. We catch intimate glimpses of these
in their most private spaces.
Directing this show has been a dream, partly because I got to work with an incredibly talented cast and an awesome production team here at MainStage Irving-Las Colinas. But mostly because Lynn Nottage has written a wonderfully moving play that deserves to be shared. I hope you leave the theater tonight touched by the lives of these very human characters.
–Dennis Raveneau, DirectorStars and Stripes Forever
The Irving-Las Colinas Rotary Club invites you to join your friends and neighbors in displaying the American Flag on the five major holidays of Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veteran's Day.
The Flags Over Irving program gives Irving residents an opportunity to show their pride and love for our country. It gives our community a great patriotic spirit and at the same time helps so many people.
So how does it work? A PVC plastic sleeve will be placed in the ground, 15 inches from your sidewalk or curb and mark will be made on the curb with a blue star. On the five holidays a 3 foot x 5 foot U.S. flag, mounted on a 10' metal pole, is placed in the plastic sleeve.
The flags and the sleeves remain the property of the Irving-Las Colinas Rotary Club. There are no brackets or fixtures attached to your home and the plastic sleeve will be barely visible.
