Philanthropic activities in the USA Philanthropy is as old as religion is per Ben Landa. Faith influenced most of the early charitable activities. With time during the 17 century in the United States, people started giving on their own, without being affiliated with a religious institution. There are many reasons people give to the different philanthropic cause. For some people, it is as a result of a personal experience at a family level. Some offer out of love and genuine concern for people who are under tough social conditions. Although the reasons why people give may vary, the end goal is to bring a positive impact to the society at large. It is important to note that philanthropy is not measured by the amount of money one makes to a given cause. Some people provide their time and expertise to solve a problem. Others will do some community service jobs for the betterment of the environment and the people in it. In the USA, women give more than men, and this applies to healthcare as well, like SentosaCare. Approximately 64% of the total philanthropic contributions come from women. Families and individual donors make up the most substantial number of contributors. They contribute more money than government and business institutions. Some of the most recognized philanthropists in the USA include; Michael Bloomberg- he aims to continue raising money to curb climate change, per Ben Landa. Michael has donated about $4.22 billion which is about 9% of his total wealth. Nicole Hockley- she started her Philanthropic work after a tragic personal experience. Her son was killed in school, and since then Nicole has been a great advocator of ending gun violence. Chuck Feeney- He has given a total of $7.5 billion. He supports education, human rights, and public health. He is the James Bond of Philanthropy. Bill and Melinda gates- They started their philanthropic work with the aim of wiping out malaria, poverty, and malnutrition. Their lifetime giving has reached an approximate figure of $32.91 billion. Warren Buffet is a big contributor to this cause. George Soros – he is one of the most liberal and open-minded givers. Through his organization, he has donated approximately $12.1 Billion according to Forbes. He aims at fighting discrimination, supporting education and health causes. The list of the very generous contributors is endless. In the united states, about 69% of the population gives at one point in their lives. For those who participate in Philanthropic causes, they get a chance to meet like-minded people, they also feel better after giving, and for those who believe in karma, giving is a good karma investment.
