DIANE SALEMI | PRESIDENT BDC BOARD OF DIRECTORS I am pleased to share the 7th annual Community Resource Guide in my first year of presidency with the Berwyn Development Corporation! This guide is a publication that provides our community and prospective residents the tools necessary to navigate Berwyn with ease. In 2022, it is of utmost importance that we support our community as businesses enter the recovery stage from the pandemic. These new normals will require adaptability from not only our business owners, but residents alike to ensure that we can rebuild safe and healthy lifestyles for all to enjoy. Representing the densest township in Illinois, opportunity for all residents and visitors to gather again are just around the corner. After taking a hiatus with special events, we are excited to bring back Berwyn classics along with our professional events centered around business owners! These gatherings would not be possible without the strong bond that lives between our local businesses and dedicated residents. Continued support and resilience are the backbone of Berwyn, and we thank you for guiding the way to a better place to call home. Our businesses continue to grow in remarkable and innovative ways to address this new, yet promising, reality. It is important—now more than ever— to recognize these champions and celebrate all they do for our community. Most importantly, we encourage everyone to continue supporting their friends and neighbors. I hope you are as inspired by this community as I am, and as excited for the many memories yet to be made here in Berwyn. Warmest Regards, Diane Salemi

MAYOR ROBERT J. LOVERO CITY OF BERWYN

Over the past year, I have continued to be impressed by the resiliency and adaptability of the Berwyn community. Berwyn residents, businesses, and organizations have worked together to support each other, host safe events, and promote growth in the face of ongoing challenges and changing restrictions. I am incredibly proud of the community’s dedication to recover and rebuild. To help revitalize the local economy, the City of Berwyn partnered with the BDC to promote state and federal programs. Together, we connected our small businesses to much-need financial resources, bringing in more than $6 million in grants and over $41 million in forgivable loans. With these dollars, more than 1,000 Berwyn businesses were able to pay for equipment, inventory, payroll, and other operational expenses. Moreover, we worked to ensure that our business owners received timely technical support, offering one-on-one business counseling on everything from marketing to financing – free of charge. I, along with my administration and the BDC, am committed to sharing additional resources and information as more funding becomes available.

Mayor Robert J. Lovero City of Berwyn

In addition to assisting local businesses, the City of Berwyn has also made considerable efforts to invest in our community. Specifically, I worked to secure support for our local emergency services despite inheriting adverse financial conditions. After considerable time and energy, I am happy to announce that as of January 2022, the police and fire pensions are fully funded. Furthermore, we launched the highly anticipated Depot District Infrastructure Project in 2021. This two-phase project is designed to upgrade the sewer and water system, as well as improve the streetscape – sidewalks, lighting, parking, and overall visuals of the Depot District. Phase 1 is well underway and Phase 2 is scheduled to commence later this year. I appreciate the flexibility of those who have been impacted by the construction and I look forward to welcoming everyone to a new and improved corridor early next year. Until then, I hope residents and businesses continue to thrive throughout the rest of 2022. With summer upon us, Berwyn is preparing for a dynamic event season – to include the Berwyn Shops’ Grand Opening, Pub Crawls, 5k Mariachi Run, Taste of Cermak, Oktoberfest, and more! I am particularly excited for the return of our Route 66 Car Show, set to feature updated signage, unique art pieces, and electrical vehicle charging stations!

AVAILABLE BDC LOAN PROGRAMS: The BDC Commercial and Micro Loan Programs are operated in conjunction with the City of Berwyn to retain and improve Berwyn businesses and to encourage new business investments. The loans may be used for almost any business-related expense, including build-outs, facade improvements, equipment, inventory and working capital. The Commercial Loan Program offers: • Traditional loans of $10,001 or greater. • Annually-established interest rates. • A maximum term of 5 years. The Micro Loan Program offers: • Micro loans between $1,000 to $10,000. • Annually-established interest rates. • A maximum term of 3 years. To be eligible for either program, applicants must: • Apply and/or remain BDC members in good standing. • Operate or plan to operate a licensed and for-profit business in Berwyn. • Comply with all city ordinances and ADA regulations. • Be able to secure their loans.

18 | 2022 COMMUNITY RESOURCE GUIDE | WhyBerwyn.com

*Loan applications may be submitted at any time. Applications are available on the BDC website at www.berwyn.net/small-business-lending or may be obtained by contacting Kendra Shaw at kendras@berwyn.net or (708) 749-6587

In 2021, the BDC launched the EDA Revolving Loan Fund, made possible by a $2 million grant from the United States Economic Development Administration, and matched with a $500,000 commitment from the City of Berwyn. The loans are amortized over 15 years, with a maximum term of 5 years. To be eligible, applicants must: •

Have a denial letter from a financial institution.

Meet other BDC loan program criteria.

Pledge to create or retain one job for every $35,000 borrowed.

The BDC Recognized as a Certified Lender through the Advantage Illinois Program Since 2021, the BDC has been recognized as an approved lender through the Advantage Illinois Program. This State of Illinois program allows the BDC to submit eligible loans to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for additional funding. This partnership reduces the BDC’s lending risk profile, the borrower’s interest rate, and the borrower’s equity requirement. The State of Illinois takes a second position on the loans, ensuring subordination to the BDC. These additional funds are not right for everyone, as they do come with specific job creation criteria. However, this recognition provides additional lending power to the BDC’s already diverse programs and services.

BERWYN BUSINESS DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT:

ROAD

The streets you walk and drive everyday house so many shops and restaurants people near and far love. They may also have centuries of stories worth hearing. Take Cermak Road, long heralded as Berwyn’s Main Street. Today, Berwyn’s Cermak Road corridor boasts locally owned small businesses, national favorites, a rich history, and a bright future.

Cermak Road honors Chicago’s mayor from 1931-1933. On February 15, 1933, an assassin took aim at then-President Franklin Roosevelt during a rally in downtown Miami. Killed instead was Chicago’s mayor, Anton J. Cermak, who was in Florida visiting the President while he vacationed before his inauguration. Anton J. Cermak, a Czech immigrant, helped create a diverse Democratic party. In his honor, the city renamed 22nd street as it passed through Czech-American neighborhoods in Pilsen and Lawndale on its way west to Cicero and Berwyn, both home to large Czech populations at the time. Stop by the Chicagoland Czech-American Community Center and see how it keeps the active Czech community connected.

BERWYN BUSINESS DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT:

Roosevelt ROAD

In May 1919, the road formerly known as 12th Street was renamed Roosevelt Road in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. During the 1920’s, Berwyn was the fastest-growing Chicago suburb. The Ritz movie palace solidified Roosevelt Road as a premier entertainment destination.

With a booming music, dining, and shopping scene, there’s a palpable energy about Roosevelt Road. A street scape improvement plan invested millions into making it an even more enjoyable area for residents, visitors, and touring musicians alike. FitzGerald’s Nightclub & Sidebar is TripAdvisor’s #1 place to visit in Berwyn, and for good reason! The legendary music venue – once a Bohemian hunting lodge – has been in its current form since the 80’s and remains known for its laidback environment and booming musical variety that continues to bring more visitors from out of town every year. With their latest addition of BABYGOLD BARBECUE adjacent to Fitzgerald’s, visitors can enjoy a handpicked menu developed by beloved Chicago chef and Berwyn resident, Chef John Manion.

Ogden

BERWYN BUSINESS DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT:

AVENUE

As Berwyn and other suburbs began booming in the 1920s, a new numbered highway system was sprouting across America. Route 66 was one such road, and – in the century since – it’s become an icon of progress and connection. In Berwyn, Ogden Avenue is a vibrant reminder of times that have passed, and a present-day nod to all our town continues to offer.

RT66 Car Show 1996

As part of Route 66, known as The Mother Road. It’s no surprise that Ogden Avenue is home to several top-notch, car-related businesses. For those looking for a new or used ride, Berwyn Kia has earned its reputation as a reliable and trustworthy dealership. Buying a car can be a stressful process, and the sales and service team at Berwyn Kia is known for being helpful and patient. Over three generations, proud owners have relied on Ogden Top & Trim for their superior craftsmanship. Since 1919 (yes, before Ogden Avenue was part of Route 66), this awardwinning upholstery and trim shop has serviced custom cars, restorations, and repairs alike. Beyond buying cars, Berwyn loves to celebrate cars too! The Berwyn Route 66 Car Show is back after its two-year hiatus, and it features hundreds of classic and custom vehicles. Save the date for August 27th, 2022 to attend!

While cars are good enough reason to cruise Ogden Avenue, there are plenty of unique shops and restaurants along the way that are well worth a visit. Aptly located in an old Chevy dealership, Berwyn’s Toys & Trains has been treasured since 1992 for its trove of new and vintage toys.

Cigars & Stripes

Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge is another neighborhood gem. Filled with otherworldly memorabilia, this Rt 66 paradise offers smokey meats and in house sides that are ready to be washed down with on-tap craft brews. Patrons love the wide range of events, from movie screenings to open mic comedy nights, and as the name suggests, it’s also a fine place to snag a quality cigar!

Paisans Pizzeria & Bar

Paisans Pizzeria and Bar’s award-winning pizza, burgers, salads, and wings are delicious reasons to stop. It’s a family favorite not just for great food but for a Route 66 inspired ambiance complete with custom motorcycles and a dragster on display.

The Berwyn Shops: A Homegrown Project takes inspiration from the Batavia Boardwalk Shops and fuses it with the historic elements ingrained in the Roosevelt Road Corridor. The goal – to assist local makers, entrepreneurs, and artisans as they test out the market before committing to a full-blown store operation. The Berwyn Shops is comprised of twelve 12’x15’ mini-storefronts and provides its vendors with the tools needed to succeed: a space, business education, promotion, and tailored resources. In addition to creating an ideal environment for its vendors, the Berwyn Shops also supports local businesses by supplying the community with amazing future business tenants. This incubator is a unique destination that will continue to draw new shoppers, new businesses, and generate a lot of excitement for the Roosevelt Road Corridor from June to December every year. Located at 6931 Roosevelt Rd, the Shop site started as a grass field. Breaking ground in late 2021, the site has since transformed into a landscaped home base for twelve colorful shops. Thanks to the support of Community Partners and the dedication of the Jury Committee, the incubator’s inaugural season launched with 12 women-owned start-up businesses. We are proud to represent the many communities within Berwyn - presenting local businesses that are women led and founded, LatinX owned, LGBTQIA+ allied, and bilingual speaking. Just as diverse as the City of Berwyn is, we strive to reflect this community within our shops. From the team at the Berwyn Shops, As our first season is in full swing, we’d like to thank our Community Partners and Berwyn residents for supporting the 12 vendors and making this incubator come to life. Celebrating its grand opening on June 3rd of 2022, our gates are now open to the public. In response to the pandemic, the U.S. Small Business Administration launched a program that was designed to help small business owners in underrepresented communities reduce barriers and get connected to resources. What came of that was the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) becoming a Community Navigator that offers free technical assistance to businesses and the creation of the Berwyn Internship for Small Businesses (BISB). In collaboration with Morton College, the BDC has invested $50,000 to fund the pilot program. This will help cover the costs of student tuition, software, and equipment for a total of 20 participating businesses paired with 20 students. While the students are earning credits for their program and real-life work experience, the businesses are learning to build a stronger social media presence and enhancing their website at no cost to them.

The second cohort will take place during Morton College’s 2022 Fall semester. D100 2021-22 Report Card: Placed emphasis on family and parent-focused events, both in-person and virtual — that were coordinated by Junely Escobar, the D100 Family Liaison. Events included Zumba classes for parents and students, a virtual Covid-19 vaccine workshop for children with Rush Hospital, a book release for bilingual parents and book club for first-time parents, a Mother's Day Appreciation Spa, and virtual workshops that dealt with topics such as positive parenting, cyber safety, social anxiety, and bullying. District 100 launched a podcast this year to highlight staff members and the excellent work they are doing with students. Episodes of “Lead Today, Empower Together, Transform Tomorrow” are available on Apple podcasts.

The vision of Berwyn South School District 100 is to inspire a passion for learning in every child.

Emerson, Freedom, and Heritage students enjoyed newly renovated library spaces this year. The libraries were updated to include spaces for small group instruction, personalized learning and read-alouds and allow students to utilize technology, hands-on resources, and flexible seating. Middle school teachers implemented newly-adopted curricular resources in Social Studies and Science. TCI Social Studies and Amplify Science provide rigorous learning opportunities for students and bring learning to life through interactive experiences in the classroom.

Our mission is to create inclusive learning environments where students take ownership of their academic and personal growth, embrace diversity, and strive to be positive influencers in our changing world.

Embodied a culture of learning and continuous improvement. Staff members attended and presented at a variety of conferences — including the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Illinois Digital Educators Alliance, Illinois Council of Instructional Coaching, and Teaching for Biliteracy. The district’s “Students Involved in Technology” conference hosted for kids by kids returned in-person, hosting over 60 students from area school districts. The conference featured a keynote presentation from a former D100 student on YouTube automation, followed by students sharing their knowledge, skills, and expertise on topics such as coding, robotics, and app usage and design. Summer school sessions are being offered to provide academic and social-emotional support to students in a variety of programs. In-person and virtual options are available, and include programs for early childhood, general education, extended school year, dual language/ bilingual, and enrichment.

BACKGROUND

PO Box 497 | Berwyn, IL 60402 • (312) 731-5912 berwyn-mental-health-board.com • b708cmhb@yahoo.com

On October 31, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed into law the Community Mental Health Act, which drastically altered the delivery of mental health services and inspired a new era of optimism in mental healthcare. This law led to the establishment of comprehensive community mental health centers throughout the country. It helped people with mental health conditions, who were until then effectively “warehoused” in hospitals and institutions, move back into their communities. In Illinois, the Community Mental Health Act led to the creation of “708” boards, which are community mental health boards established by a community, municipality, or township for the purposes of planning and funding mental health, developmental disability, and substance abuse services. Through the hard work of area residents and social service agencies, the Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Fund was established in 1974 by referendum.

The Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Board promotes and works to ensure access to quality, community-based mental health services for the people of Berwyn. The board fulfills this mission by making grants to local nonprofit organizations that provide direct services to Berwyn residents with mental health conditions, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders. Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Board applications for the 2022-2023 grant cycle will be available December 12, 2022 and due January 20, 2023. To receive a grant application or for more information, visit www.berwyn-mental-health-board. com/funding or contact Allen Doederlein, Executive Director, at (312) 731-5912 or b708cmhb@yahoo.com.

BERWYN TOWNSHIP 708 COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH BOARD TODAY Initially, the Berwyn 708 Board funded four agencies. Some 47 years later, the 708 Board is a well-established grant-making body that supports organizations that reach Berwyn residents with vital mental health, developmental disability, and substance use disorder programming. In 2022, the 708 Board has committed to funding 14 agencies and their provision of 26 communitybased programs. Over the past 10 years alone, the Berwyn 708 Board has granted $4,303,956 in funds to provided direct service to Berwyn residents.

COMMISSIONER FRANK J. AGUILAR, 16TH DISTRICT COOK COUNTY COMMISSIONER Representing the City of Berwyn as your Cook County Commissioner has been an honor. I am so proud of the collaboration between my office, Berwyn city officials, and Berwyn residents that has resulted in the continued and increased investment into the Berwyn community, allowing residents to access everything Berwyn has to offer. Since taking the position of your County Commissioner in April of 2020, I set out to learn more about what was important to my constituents in Berwyn, while building bridges between government agencies and community organizations to solve any future problems we may face. Berwyn has been at the intersection of all I have done. Berwyn became one of Cook County’s 70 over 70 cities, with over 70% of residents receiving the COVID-19 vaccine by December of 2021. I know our testing, PPE distribution, and vaccine events made a difference. Protecting the health and well-being of our residents is always our first priority. During my term, The City of Berwyn also received major influxes of funding. This broke down into three major categories: The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), Invest in Cook, and small business grants. Nearly $32 Million was distributed to Berwyn through ARPA, over 3% of the total funds distributed to the county. We were able to distribute $1.16 million in Backto-Business funding through Illinois’ Back-to-Business Grant Program. Berwyn was also awarded $88,800 in funds for improvements to the 26th Street and Ridgeland Avenue corridors. I will never stop working to get Berwyn the funding and resources they need to ensure residents live full and healthy lives. Thank you to the citizens of Berwyn for letting me represent them. I am so proud of what we have accomplished and look forward to working together to bring more investment and resources to Berwyn, one of the true gems in the 16th District. Sincerely, Commissioner Frank J. Aguilar. 16th District Cook County Commissioner

tour berwyn

Berwyn’s architecture exudes the charm and patina of a historical home with family charm. With construction booming during the Roaring Twenties, early residents sought to craft quality homes to which, the Berwyn Bungalow was born. With a significant collection of bungalow style homes, Berwyn also offers other beautiful varieties of architecture for its residents. Tree lined streets displaying sturdy brick homes, victorians, and historical homes from some of the best architects - coined the well known name “The City of Homes”.

VICTORIANS

You can’t miss one of Berwyn’s Queen Anne Victorians. Featuring signature style details like beautiful wrap-around porches, turrets, towers, and ornamental details, Queen Anne’s give a nod to the extravagance of a by-gone era. Despite their ornateness, many of the materials required to build a Victorian home were being mass produced at the time. They were able to be shipped easily, all thanks to the widespread train routes that were established that included stops in Berwyn.

TUDOR REVIVALS

Tudor Revival style houses are some of the more recent houses to be built in Berwyn, starting to appear in the 1940s. Tudor Revivals tend to sit on smaller lots than their Bungalow neighbors as they were built to be a more affordable option. These houses boast a very steep pitched roof and intersecting gable roofs and are always one and a half stories high. Some feature small front porches, but many have no porch at all. Berwyn’s Tudors tend to feature intricate stonework that frames different parts of the home.

FRENCH NORMANDY

After World War I, the French Normandy architecture style became popular among the growing middle class in America. Inspired by French chateaus, these houses were versions built on a smaller and more affordable scale. French Normandy houses often feature arched doorways, steep roof pitches, high ridge lines, dormers, halftimbering, and a round stone tower topped by a conical roof usually serving as either the entrance or simply a design feature.

BUNGALOWS

Berwyn’s Bungalows were all generally built around the same time in the 1920s to 1930s. Although many Bungalows in a block were sometimes built by the same workers, each house in Berwyn is unique, with subtle differences from its neighbors by design or made by the owners over the years. The roof line, style of shingles, limestone accents, and even the style of decorative face brick combine in endless ways from house to house. The Bungalows in Berwyn are also full of ornamental details such as tiled roofs, stained glass windows, checkerboard brick patterns, and intricate limestone insets. The Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District is roughly bounded by Cermak Road, Home Avenue, Ridgeland & Cuyler Avenues, and 26th Street.

AMERICAN FOURSQUARES

Some of the first homes to be built in Berwyn, American Foursquares are unique in their effective use of space. Popular around the 1910s, they were chosen because of their simplicity compared to their fancier Victorian counterparts. Common features of an American Foursquare are two and a half stories, large overhanging eaves, and a large front porch with wide steps. They tended to be built on larger lots, providing residents with plenty of space to plan and plant beautifully landscaped front lawns.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES In 2015, the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District made it onto the National Register’s list of Historic Places for the seventh time. In addition, two unique Berwyn homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

ARTHUR J. DUNHAM HOUSE In 1982, this home was added to the National Register of Historic Places because of its clear representation of the Prairie style.

THE SILHAN HOUSE In 2007, this home made it onto the National Register of Historic Places for its well-preserved style and its many features from the Art Moderne style that make it notable on a local and national level.
