Merry Christmas Finding Peace at Christmas Time We experience his presence whenever he speaks to us and Christmas carols are a way in which God speaks to us. Christmas is that time of year when we are reminded that God is not some remote, semi-interested being, watching us from above. God is so interested in us, so in love with us human beings, that he decided to become one of us. God comes to us in the little baby lying in a feed trough. The man who grew up as a carpenter and devoted his life to the care of others is the Son of God. He is the man Jesus who died and rose for us and now spends every moment with us, looking out for us. There is a name we use often at this time of year for God. The name is Immanuel, which means God with us. Carols remind me that God is with us, and with God’s presence we receive forgiveness, love, compassion and mercy. With God’s presence, we receive a deep peace and wholeness that can’t be explained but can only be experienced. Pastor Rolf Lungwitz, Strait Gate Lutheran Parish, Light Pass

SW3532

I was about nine years old when I learnt my first Christmas Carols. That was the time that I started to go to Sunday School and as Christmas approached we began to sing Carols. I still remember sitting outside on my swing, singing Silent Night and Away in a Manger to my heart’s content. I didn’t care how it sounded because somehow singing those songs made me feel peaceful and whole inside, and I never wanted the feeling to go away. Have Christmas Carols ever had that effect on you? Do the old familiar Carols bring back a flood of memories of past Christmases when life seemed far more simple and you actually used to get excited about Christmas? Do carols remind you of times with your family gathered together opening gifts and for a while at least at peace with each other? For a while it seemed life could not get any better. Jesus came to give us peace, a deep peace that remains even in the midst of the turmoil of life. Jesus also came to give us the best of life. We experience both of these when we experience his presence with us.

Pastor Rolf Lungwitz

By Chris Linden, NFA Chairman Within the past year, our main area of concentration has been on Coulthard House. Some renovation works have been performed to protect the integrity of the building and since that time, our fearless administrator has managed to pull a number of events together at the venue including SALA and a number of markets just to name a few. We are at the stage where we have completed our Strategic Plan for the 5355 postcode. This process has taken some time and included extensive community consultation. Our next step is to break down the areas of particular expertise and passion from our board members and start driving toward our goals. An item of particular note was the announcement by the Co-op relative to their plan to create a new shopping centre precinct within Nuriootpa and this will be a fantastic stimulus with potential

for significantly increased visitation which will ultimately be beneficial for all in our town. We trust that they will have a smooth transition throughout their planning processes so that they may move forward with the project to the betterment of all. 2015 will bring a renewed push toward the achievement of a number of the short term goals within our strategic plan. We will liaise closely with RDA, PIRSA and council in an attempt to stimulate our linear path networks, to beautify our town entrances, to work on our public spaces and to stimulate town events and subsequent tourism. There are a further eight strategic priorities which will need to be considered but some wheels have been put in motion to stimulate the four items mentioned first and we will continue to pursue these opportunities in an effort to see some positive movement in our township.

This year the year one/ two class at Nuriootpa Primary School worked hard to earn money to purchase Christmas presents to go under the Kmart Wish Tree. The students washed dishes, cleaned their rooms, fed pets, washed cars, unpacked dishwashers, made their beds, weeded garden beds and helped around the house to earn money. Some even decided to earn a little extra for such a great cause. The students managed to raise over $140 to purchase gifts for children their age whose families struggle at Christmas time. Once all the money was collected the fun really began, armed with Toyworld catalogues, they went shopping! Groups of students chose a gift for a girl or boy that they themselves would like to receive and all up eight gifts were purchased to place under the tree. The staff at Toyworld and the parent volunteers of Rita Gallas, Nicole Garrett, Jasmine Kerr and Catherine Camillo were a great help and the students were very happy with all the items they

Barossa and Districts combined Probus Club Christmas lunch

About 100 members and guests of the Barossa and Districts Combined Probus Club met at the Tanunda Club recently for their Christmas luncheon. After a busy year of meetings, outings, camping trips, luncheons, dinners and many and varied interest group activities this was a chance for members to catch up and share their thoughts on the year almost ended. President Bryce Lillecrapp began proceedings with the induction of new members Carla and Paul Von der Borch who were sponsored into the Club by Janet and Max Krause. With a “ceiling” of 100 members Carla and Paul needed to wait for a vacancy to arise before they could become members. Bob Fidge, the Club’s “Poet

Lorikeet” presented an entertaining summary in verse (well, most of it rhymed) of the recent caravan/ camping/cabin group outing to Meningie and local area. Following the main course, entertainment in the form of “The Marriage Game” was enjoyed. Arranged by Veronica Semmler with John Semmler as MC, five couples were put on the spot to see just how much they knew their spouse, often with interesting results! Dessert followed and the formal part of the lunch concluded with a presentation to the Tanunda Club as a sign of appreciation of their hosting of the monthly meetings and particularly in their pro-active approach in the installation of a lift for use by some less active members.

For the first time a Tug of War competition was on offer with around eight groups entering. Groups from Bowls, SA Ambulance, Missies Café and others tried their best to win the $100 prize. In the end the Stiff Schutz team proved to have the most strenght and they generously donated the prize money back to the street party for next year’s event. Music was played throughout the evening by St John’s Lutheran School Choir, Eudunda Area School Choir and St John’s Church Choir. The evening concluded once again with the popular Carols by Candlelight. A large raffle consisting of three prizes was organsied by Street Party members and has been running over the past few weeks. This was drawn at the end of the evening and the lucky winners this year were; 1st prize Camille Williams, 2nd Val Godoecke and 3rd Tanya Jenke.

St. John’s Lutheran school members: Sophie Nietschke, Breea Schutz, Amy Mosey, Francie Heinsen, Temika Tschirn and Claire Schiller.

Eudunda’s Angels: Carolyn Doering, Debbie Doecke, Janice Lipschinski, Dagmar Roocke, Bronwyn Pfitzner and Sheryl Doecke.

Julie Mathews and Alex Wilson with the SA Ambulance float.

Charlotte Nietschke and Lillia Cluse had fun during the evening. “The Directors, management and staff” thank all customers for their patronage during 2014 and look forward to their support again in 2015.

The weather was on the committee’s side on Friday evening, as the town once again prepared for an annual Street Party. Each year the crowd continues to grow with around 300 people attending this year’s event. Staff of Regional Council of Goyder closed the roads off close to 5pm, and the entertainment soon began setting up. This year the committee put a lot of time into structuring the parade. With more businesses and community members entering in floats and less children participating, the main streets were lined deep with happy smiling children. Winner of this year’s business float went to Richard Schmidt from RJS Electrical and the winner of the community float went to the Flintstones Girls, Chantel Schutz, Renae Sauer, Kathy Cluse and Karen Nietschke. Santa arrived last in the vintage CFS truck driven by Paul Schiller. Excited children were given a small gift and able to have a brief talk with the popular guest. The committee had organised entertainment including face painting, jumping castle, laser skirmish and Wheelie Kids for the children to enjoy. Fundraising has been undertaken throughout the year to ensure that

This year has been particularly valuable in forming a good working relationship with the Town of Gawler. The CEO, Mr Henry Inat, instigated a monthly meeting with us when he took on the role and that has proved very advantageous. One example of this was the council support of the SALA Art Trail. The council provided the Institute at very little cost, improved the lighting in there and greatly supported the concept. We are grateful for the assistance given by Henry and his senior staff and look forward to much more collaboration. We supported the council in their sponsorship of the Mainstreet SA conference, which was held in Gawler this year. Board members also attended a number of the workshops and gained valuable insights which have informed concepts in place for the coming year. We have just enjoyed our second Gawler Jazz Festival. This was another Board initiative which has proven very successful with visitors from all over the state coming for the weekend of jazz. Plans are already afoot for an even bigger event next year with the possibility of some very well known artists being involved. The Jazz Festival is held on the same weekend as the Rotary Village Fair and is an example of collaboration of special interests group in the town. We will again be supporting the Rotary Christmas Carols and, as we did last year, will be running our competition for Christmas Hampers, the winners of which will receive their hamper at the Christmas Carols. This year we are working in conjunction with the Lions Club which will assemble the hampers, supporting their fund raising efforts while making the organisation of this task much more manageable for Sigrid. I acknowledge the hard work put in by our business liaison and marketing officer, Sigrid Murljacic. Nothing is too much trouble for her. She goes above and beyond to not only fulfil her role with the Board but to serve the interests of the Gawler business community. She is a joy to work with and appreciated by all the Board members who know what effort she puts in. It has been a privilege to be the president again this year and I thank all the Board members for their enthusiasm and the expertise they bring to their roles. LOUISE DRUMMOND, President.

President, Barbara McRostie welcomed 41 members of Barossa Solace Club to their annual Christmas luncheon which was held on November 6 at the Weintal, Tanunda. A Christmas card was received from four members from Elizabeth, who attend three times a year. Pastor Trevor Reu, who is the Solace support person, was asked to say table grace prior to the meal. After the meal, a very jovial Father Christmas made his annual visit to the group and distributed gifts to all. Barbara thanked him for coming along and gave him a gift in return, for visiting the group once again. The singing of Christmas songs and Christmas Carols was enjoyed by all to complement an afternoon of meeting up with friends for fun and friendships made over the 30 years since Solace began. Merle Liebig won the door prize. Birthday greetings for December, were given to Merle Liebig (a special birthday), Connie Irrgang and Carlene Schmaal. Pastor Trevor Reu was asked to draw the raffle, and added great humour between prize draws. Once again this has been a rewarding and exciting year for Gawler Business Development Group. It has been a privilege to work with the Board and to feel we have achieved a great deal for the business owners of Gawler. All the Board members give generously of their time and skill. They do it as an altruistic contribution to the business community in Gawler. No-one benefits their own business by being part of the Board but rather they contribute in the hope they will help other business owners gain by the work they put in. This year we provided some retail businesses with retail and merchandising training which has been of great value to the participants. They have realised increases in sales and enjoyed greater profitability as a result of the skills the trainers imparted. We also ran training in marketing and sales skills with a well regarded presenter, Bruce Bowen. The feedback from participants was very positive. Our one disappointment was that more businesses didn’t attend. The training we provide is free to members or done at only the cost of catering. It is one of the benefits of the membership levy. The “hero building” project was a very satisfying project in which we were involved. The owners of the Gawler Bakery in Murray Street were assisted in applying for a heritage grant to upgrade their premises in keeping with the historical aspects of the town centre. The Board helped them with planning approval and the subcontracting of the work by putting them in touch with the relevant authorities and trades people. We have identified a number of other buildings that require upgrading and are working with the owners to help them access grants and funding to contribute to the cost of renovations. We believe the improved appearance of buildings raises the appeal of the entire town and will help draw more people which, in turn, will benefit all businesses. This year we were again involved with the SALA Art Trail in Gawler. After the success of the inaugural event last year a number of the artists involved set up their own committee to manage the event. The GBDG supported that with a strong marketing campaign and we are pleased to see an idea from the Board taken on by a community group with the expertise to make this an annual successful event.

Merry Christmas

Kapunda Primary students engage in The Christmas Story It was a sight to behold on November 28 when a crowd of small angels, wise men and shepherds could be seen playing outdoors at Kapunda Primary School. Passers by may have thought that Christmas had come early, the whole nativity in fact, when students engaged in the annual Fusion Kapunda interactive advent pageant. Three junior primary classes were walked through the story of Christmas on Friday and were encouraged to dress up and become involved in the pageant. Fusion Kapunda ran the day, in conjunction with the local Kapunda Christian churches and Team Leader of Fusion, Ms Andrea Schulz said that it was a day to celebrate the true historical meaning of Christmas. “The true meaning of Christmas often goes missing in the hustle and bustle of every day life,” said Andrea. “The advent pageant is an opportunity to share the true historical meaning of Christmas with children.” Andrea said that children were encouraged to

dress up as angels, shepherds, wise men, sheep, donkeys and Mary and Joseph and were all pulled into a play script during the pageant. “We walked the children all over the school on the long road to Bethlehem, where we knocked on classroom doors only to be turned away and eventually end up in the stable,” she said. “After the pageant, children were invited to celebrate at Jesus’ birthday party with a birthday cake and party games.” More parents than ever before were also involved in the day and Andrea said that she was pleased with the extra support. “The response from both the children and their parents was really positive,” she said. “This was our sixth annual advent pageant at Kapunda Primary and it was great to see parents so supportive of their children learning about the true meaning of Christmas. “The annual event is now becoming expected each year and was Fusion Kapunda’s first programme when we moved to the town.” Students were also asked to bring non-perishable food items and wrapped gifts to place underneath a “Giving Tree” in the activity room for the Light Community Church to distribute in hampers to families in need. “Students donated a number of items from food to gifts,” said Andrea. “It was about them bringing whatever they were able to give to someone they don’t know in the spirit of Christmas.”

Busy year for ECBat showcasing local businesses and their produce. The committee has been very involved in trying to initiate some better freight routes around the town. There have been many meetings and presentations to council as well as several MP’s who have started to become involved as well. At this point ECBaT are trying to establish a suitable heavy vehicle route around the township of Eudunda to provide a better, more economical service for farming as well as the local industry. ECBaT have had a strong focus on trying to beautify Eudunda and this year there have been a few small steps from council to help in doing so. Gum trees have been planted along the

Bruce Street extension as well as an area on the northern end of town where road works had been completed. In the coming months ECBat will be helping to revamp the Top Pub car park and lookout area. In the second half of the year the committee have been working closely with Steve and Lee Wegner in helping them to develop a gym facility. Early in October the Eudunda Fitness Centre was born. This is operating in a room at the recently built swimming pool complex and has proved to be very popular in the short time it has been open. Community clubs have had a successful year too. The Eudunda Basketball Club was

successful in winning two premierships. The Southern Saints Football Club had all four grades make the final series with two playing off in Grand Finals, an amazing achievement for a club that is only in its fifth season. In all, this has been a very busy year for all that have been involved. If any community minded people are interested in attending ECBaT, the meetings are the last Tuesday of every month at the RSL Hall at 7.30 p.m. They are open to the public and all are welcome. Finally, James and Cirsten Leditschke extend a Merry Christmas to all among the community, May you all have a happy and safe festive season.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. Best wishes, Nick Champion.

Eudunda Community, Business and Tourism committee, known as ECBaT has had an extremely busy year. The year started with the hosting of a traditional Australia Day breakfast. This was held in the beautiful town gardens that are cared for and maintained by a host of volunteers. A crowd of approximately 150 people enjoyed breakfast supplied by the Eudunda Hall and Catering committee. Tidy town awards were presented as well as the Young Citizen of the year award that was presented to Ryan Harvalick for his dedicated work on the YAK committee and CFS and many other roles that he does within the community. This year ECBaT have also completed a safety fence around the playground within the town gardens. This was paid for in part with funds donated from the Eudunda Friends of CAFYS along with a grant from the Regional Council of Goyder. There has been the completion of the further stage of the Lavender Walking Trail. This trail starts in Murray Bridge and now comes all the way to Eudunda. There was a great day for the launch of this new section and despite it being terrible weather there were over 200 visitors to the town and there is now a steady stream of walkers through the town most weekends. The committee has just recently been informed that the Lavender Trail organisers now have gained approval to further extend the trail through to Clare, with mapping already started along the picturesque Inspiration Point and the Burra Ranges. There has been a new initiative with the Totally Locally group, over the summer months planting several incredibly edible garden beds around town. These have been well received and there are often many locals collecting fresh herbs from these. They were also responsible for creating a “Pop up Shop” in the local RSL for a week
