“We can’t ignore that there is definitely going to be an impact but it’s difficult to quantify at this stage,” said Mr March. “Wuhan and its immediate areas in Hubei Provence are not a major wine centre in terms of our export profile. It is a second tier city and the majority of Barossa wine distribution is concentrated in tier one cities such as Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai.

Coronavirus will impact the local wine industry according to Barossa Grape & Wine Association (BGWA) but it’s too early to gauge to what extent. CEO Mr James March said he had received reports that the outbreak was affecting distribution centres and restaurants in China and that would likely impact sales and the ability to transport wine within the country.

Calm and kind: Coping with the COVID-19 crisis

Slim Dusty once famously sung about a pub with no beer. Monday this week marked the beginning of a possible six month era of pubs with no people. Pubs, clubs and licensed premises, gyms, cinemas, casinos, indoor sporting complexes and places of worship have been forced to close after the Federal Government announced the nation-wide roll out of “Stage 1” social restrictions in an effort to flatten the curve of COVID-19 infections in Australia. As The Leader went to print, schools remain open, and cafes and restaurants are permitted to offer takeaway or delivery options only. The news is devastating to many local businesses already hit hard by the coronavirus crisis. Others are rallying to make the best they can from the situation. Mr Chris Linden, CEO of the Vine Inn Barossa Community Hotel, Nuriootpa told The Leader on Monday that the business would take all the steps necessary to survive. “The thing about this hotel is, where we’re standing right now was settled 173 years ago, and when we come out the other side of this, this hotel will still be here,” said Chris.

A YEAR IN REVIEW Rain brings confidence to farmers

MAY

Barossa no longer high risk SA Health declared the Barossa no longer a “high risk” area for COVID-19, after the state recorded zero cases for 12 days straight.

$600 million spend

Good soaking Autumn rains brought smiles to farmer’s faces and some much needed optimism for a promising season ahead. Kapunda farmer, Mr Clyde Hazel, Hawker’s Creek Farm, said whilst some say rain on ANZAC Day is a sign of a bumper year, he has always remained a little more cautious in his predictions. Clyde had 73 mm for the month of April, and 38 mm since ANZAC Day. It’s a stark contrast to the past few years which recorded below average rainfalls and one particularly dry winter.

Mr Merv Ellis, of Kapunda hadn’t lost his touch for growing Japanese radishes. He grew a 6 pound or 13 kilogram radish, following his last whopper effort in 1970, where he harvested a radish weighing seven and a half pounds.

Light Regional Council announced rate relief for ratepayers and up to $600 million spend on accelerating infrastructure projects to stimulate jobs and local economy.

Cafes, pubs re-open Hospitality venues re-open as the Government releases its “Roadmap to Easing COVID-19 Restrictions.”

KFC for Barossa A KFC franchise joined McDonald’s as the two restaurants proposed to be incorporated into the Sturt Highway Service Centre at Nuriootpa.

Cathy McAlpine launched a petition to keep her son’s memorial on Gottwald Road, Williamstown after complaints were received. 33 year old Kersbrook man, John McAlpine lost his life in a motorbike crash in January 2020.

The Hospital Research Foundation prepared care hampers for about 200 SA Pathology workers across 57 sites who had been working tirelessly during the coronavirus crisis, including those at our own Tanunda testing clinic.

BIG4 Barossa Tourist Park, Nuriootpa were inundated with people wanting to explore and support our region. Easing of stage one restrictions and the encouragement of regional travel had the phones ‘ringing off the hook’.

Little legs, BIG impact

He relinquished his Shadow Ministerial responsibilities to focus on continuing to represent the people of Gawler while seeking the trust of the Barossa.

Tanunda Newsagency sold a division one ticket to a Morphett Vale man who claimed $1 million. Anne Boehm, co-owner, said it was the newsagency’s first division one prize. “Hopefully it will lift the spirits of our customers during these trying times,” she said.

For Impact Church Barossa, the extra steps have meant they have changed the way they do things at the Barossa campus.

The chiefs of the Barossa’s aged care facilities called on the community to help prevent COVID-19 coming into their facilities. The strong message by Lee Martin, Tanunda Lutheran Home and Simon Newbold, Barossa Village was everyone needs to be vigilant.

The sound of little feet traipsing along the pavement in the winter cold echoed through Angaston last Friday as children stepped out to “Walk a Mile” to raise money for the homeless. Donned in their warm jackets and beanies, and huddled under colourful umbrellas, the excited group of Angaston Primary School friends and siblings gathered at the Barossa Adventure Station car park, ready to walk “rain,

hail or shine” down the main street and back again. The rain fell, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the youngsters. “It just matters that we help homeless people,” said Year 1 student, Elsie Taylor whose mother, Nicole instigated the little event in support of The Hutt Street Centre which helps those sleeping rough. “Due to Covid, ‘Walk a Mile’ is not being held in a central place in

the city, but we are encouraged to walk a mile in our own community,” explained Nicole. “So I asked a few mums of my children’s friends to see if they would like to participate in a small fundraiser as a team of mums REAL and kids. We named ourselves WINTER ‘Angaston Little Legs’ as our nine DEFENCE child participants are three to nine year olds. “They all jumped on it and their family and friends have been fantastically supportive too.”

I had a friend at school this morning who handed them a little bit of cash so they understood that it’s not just ‘bank-land’ as sponsorship often is.” On Monday, Nicole advised The Leader that the “Angaston Little Legs” group “had a ball” during their mile long walk up and down the street and the final fundraising tally was $2,103.

The year 2020 will be remembered as a year like no other. We have seen many changes in the way we live, work and socialise. Through it all, our community has banded together - by staying apart - to stop the spread of COVID-19 and to protect those who are most vulnerable. Our community is an extremely resilient one, and I have been so proud of how we have all readily adapted to this new normal. While we've had to stay apart, we have never been closer as a community. Here's to a happy, healthy and safe 2021.

The spookiest day of the year is almost upon us, with Halloween set to scream through the Barossa this Saturday. Wildly wicked witches and ghoulish grimacing ghosts are just some of the scary little beasties that may be spotted traversing the streets “trick or treating” as the American tradition continues to gain traction in the region. One little group of frightening friends from Nuriootpa were looking more cute than creepy as they geared up for some hair-raising adventure, lolly baskets in hand and brooms ready for flight. Seven year old “witch” Indy Mackie chose her costume “because I’ve got the hat and it’s new!” “I love dressing up and getting treats,” she said excitedly. Indy’s mum, Courtney said her children enjoyed visiting their neighbours. “We are a pretty close street anyway, but it’s a good excuse to see everyone and say hey, how you going?” she said. “It’s an opportunity to connect with your community and know your neighbours.” Mother of two, Jane Powell agreed. “We are not getting rid of any evil spirits or anything, that’s not the aim!” she laughed. “We do it mainly because the kids love it.” SA Health has issued a safety message to encourage a COVID safe Halloween they say will still be loads of fun albeit a little different. “People should keep 1.5 metres apart, take hand sanitiser and sanitise hands regularly, and only give out and take wrapped lollies or snacks,” an SA Health spokeswoman said. “Remember to wear your scariest or cutest costume but please do not go out if you are unwell.”

On the spookiest and scariest day of the year there were more smiles and laughter than screams at the Barossa Fresh Foodland, Nuriootpa Trick or Treat Trail. Over 395 children from the region dressed up in their spookiest or cutest costumes for the trail, which raised $1,050 for Camp Quality.

Soccer has reached a new level in the region when Barossa United kicked off their inaugural summer season. More than 100 registrations were received for the competition, a quarter of their registrations from the winter competition.

Within half an hour of Premier Steven Marshall announcing a ‘6 day circuit breaker’ lockdown to prevent a second wave of COVID-19 local people had flocked to supermarkets, fruit and vegetable grocers and bakeries to stock up on goods.

Crops across the region are yielding reasonably well and quality is expected to be above average as farmers face challenges around unexpected weather events. Daveyston’s Mr Matt Wehr said a storm brought rain but it also sidelined the ability to harvest crops before hotter weather came in.
