The garden bringing the community together The Angaston community garden, situated behind the Angaston Kindergarten, is well underway with students and their families getting behind the concept. A group of parents from the Angaston Primary School got the garden up and running, with the assistance of Rachel Mulalic, who saw potential in the garden plans. “I thought, wow, I’m going to get it set up for them,” she said. With Rachel’s agricultural knowledge, the garden’s plans were able to move ahead. To g e t h e r t h e A n g a s t o n Kindergarten and Angaston Primary School plan to engage the community in the development of the Community Garden. After receiving funding from a NRM grant, the schools were able to purchase all the plants needed for the garden. The Angaston Kindergarten are in the process of creating an Indigenous Garden, with a focus on the native plants used by the Peramangk people. The Angaston Primary School have been developing a ‘veggie patch’, and next week they will be planting
vegetables, fruit trees and herbs that are suited to the Winter months. The plants include strawberries, cauliflower, carrot, broccoli, lettuce, mint, kale, beetroot, celery, onion, parsnip, rosemary, sage, thyme, coriander, turnips, cabbage, spinach and broad beans. The fruit trees set to be planted are orange, limes, figs, passion fruit, nectarines and lemons. Rachel explains that the mulch sitting on top of the beds needs to be removed to allow warmth into the soil. She also said that July is the perfect time for planting fruit trees as the trees will be in their dormant stage. “We’re planting these plants because they are Winter plants, and can cope with the weather,” said Rachel. Mothers and grandparents of the school children have also been getting involved and volunteering their time to help during the planting process. The Primary School have put worm farms within each of the composting garden beds, which will provide each bed with aeration and nutrition. “The students have been feeding and watering the beds, and we’re in the middle of irrigating them so we can begin planting next week,” said Rachel. The garden aims to teach the students how to grow, cook, use and sell their own fruit and vegetables. It plans to educate the students on fresh, organic foods and the importance of recycling. “We’re teaching them to do their composting and worm farming. “We won’t throw anything away, even the weeds will be composted. It’s a recycling process,” said Rachel.

Time to plant bare root roses, trees and fruit trees

Bare root roses are in , there are more coming and bare root trees will be arriving in Barossa Nursery later this week. Things you need to know about handling bare root plants: 1. The bare root season lasts June, July and to midAugust but the sooner they are planted the better. 2. Cut back bare root plants by 30-50% and thin out any branches growing into the centre. Barossa Nursery staff will happily prune back your plants for you, if you wish. 3. You can put old rotted down compost down the hole or you can use rose marvel compost and planting mix down the hole for roses. Do not put fertiliser down the hole - it can burn the bare roots and can severely set back or even kill your bare root plant. 4. Water in well with a Seasol solution and again a week later. This stimulates root growth and gets your plants off to a good start. 5. You can add fertiliser to the top of the ground where rain will gradually leach it into the soil and it will reach the roots in a dilute form as the plant starts to shoot. 6. Continue to water regularly, maybe once a week in winter with a good soak (six hours with a dripper or overnight with a trickling hose) if the weather is dry. Continue roughly the same amount of water in spring and summer, even more frequently if there is a heat wave. If you wouldn’t last for a whole week in summer with
just nine litres of water, neither will a plant! A moisture meter, available from Barossa Nursery will indicate whether your plant is dry or not, if you are unsure. In winter here, it is advisable to spray frost sensitive plants like lilypillies, citrus, hibiscus, frangipani, duranta, plumbago, cut leaf grevilleas like Robyn Gordon, etc. with either Droughtshield (ready to use) or Envy (concentrated) which can put a thin plastic coating on the leaves and can make up to 4°C difference. It generally lasts about three months. Barossa Nursery welcomes Peter and Linda Baverstock with their wonderful antiques and collectables, housed in the small shop inside the nursery. They stock very nice old furniture pieces and interesting collectables, well worth a look. It is potato, rhubarb, asparagus, strawberry, garlic and berry time. So pop into the beautiful Barossa Nursery for all your winter gardening needs.

Dear Erica, I have received a moth orchid for Mother’s Day and I’m just wondering how do I look after it? Margaret L. Answer: Moth orchids or phaelenopsis are epiphytes which mean they grow on trees. They come from tropical areas, so they like warmth, humidity, reasonable light indoors and only need to be watered once a week in summer and fortnightly in winter. The leaves can burn outside and they don’t like droughts. After flowering, do not cut the flower stem back to the base, but rather just above where the first flower started. Your moth orchid will produce a new flower stem above that first notch. Moth orchids like regular fertilising and Barossa Nursery stocks a fertiliser, high in potasssium, just for moth orchids. Barossa Nursery also stocks a very coarse potting soil for moth orchids, if repotting. Erica. Dear Erica, My standard roses look terrible and the foliage is all wind burnt. How can they be fixed? Also, I have a row of agapanthus along the iron fence and they are all scorched. Daphne F. Answer: Firstly the roses. Check if you have had mites. These are miniscule spiders, barely visible to the naked eye, but you may see some very fine webbing, the leaves ‘silvered” and the underside of the leaves look sandblasted (this is from mite eggs, egg remains and mites on the back of the leaves). At this point I would recommend pruning back all your roses, removing all leaves and spray them with Copper Oxychloride and White Oil. The copper will kill off fungal spores and White Oil acts like a sticker, but also smothers mites and aphid eggs (Lime Sulphur will do the same thing). If your damaged rose leaves have not been caused by mites, next spring and summer, spray the rose foliage with a fertiliser/protectant like Seasol and Powerfeed on a regular basis (every 2-4 weeks). With your agapanthas, in early summer, spray the foliage with either Drought Shield (ready to use) or Envy (concentrate) which puts a thin plastic coating on the leaves and acts as a sunscreen, lasting up to three months. Erica. Dear Erica, When do you cut back chrysanthemums and when do you plant them out? Roy F. Answer: You can plant them out anytime now and water in with Seasol. When you notice new growth happening nicely at the base of the chrysanthemum, then you can cut the old top growth off. Erica.

Heather Gordon is well-known in the community for being an artist, author and gardener. The Nuriootpa resident’s cream brick house, built in 1978, is very similar in style to many houses in the town. One morning, shortly after purchasing the house in July 2010, Heather decided the walls needed cheering up. “This was the start of my ambitious plan to transform the walls from modest and ordinary to extraordinary using glittering mosaic,” she said. Heather has named her home ‘Rhagodia’ in honour of a salt tolerant and drought hardy Australian shrub. The front of Heather’s house glitters with the reflected light from the mirrored effect of ‘Rhagodia’ in mosaic on the wall. Most of the changes to every single external wall have been achieved with mosaics and visually, that’s what stands out. One carport wall is filled with a mosaic of mermaids diving and twirling and in contrast, another external wall of the house has a bushland scene, filled with birds and animals. Each wall tells a different story and has it’s own unique and quirky features, whether there’s frying pans, crockery, quotes, bikes, structures, men’s ties or mirror. The external walls of Heather’s home aren’t the only outstanding feature, with mosaics also covering seats, poles and featuring in the concrete pathways. “The amount of help that I receive is astounding,” she said. “From donations of crockery and tiles, grinding tiles into shapes, installation of mosaics, grouting and so forth, I’ve had an enormous amount of assistance.” Volunteers were also central to the success of Heather’s participation in the SALA festivals and her Open Garden in 2014. “On a few occasions I had a crisis in confidence and wondered how I’d ever achieve my ambitious ideas,” she said. “I thought my ideas were too big, too sweeping or too out of the ordinary.” Heather then decided to confine her project to a 10 year plan and that’s made it that little bit more manageable for her. Due to personal health issues, Heather admits she’s thought ‘there’s no way I could complete the ten year plan’, but now has no plans to slow down anytime soon. “What I’ve realised whilst transforming my house is that people are really generous with their time and energy,” she said. “I now know I can call on people to help. One of Heather’s initial setbacks was that people said she was crazy and that she was devaluing the house, which obviously knocked her confidence a bit. She admits she used to be defensive and said the house could be rendered to cover the mosaics. A Barossa Bed and Breakfast operator visited and told Heather ‘your house would make a quirky BnB’. “My worries instantly disappeared,” she said. Heather gets a great deal of pleasure from sharing her garden and mosaics, believing that at times, she is astounded by all that has been achieved. “Looking at the various combinations of the designs on the walls, I am reminded of the lovely people who helped me,” she said. Television show, ‘Poh and Co’, filmed an episode at ‘Rhagodia’ which aired during 2015. Heather wrote one of Poh’s quotes in mosaic onto the foundation wall at the front of her house. Not only has Heather created an outstanding home for her to enjoy every day, she has also written a children’s book ‘Barossa Nanna and the Lonely Chook’ alongside her friend Moira Brennan. With further book publishing ambitions, Heather and Moira are working towards a follow up book called, ‘Barossa Nanna and the Counting Book’. Heather is now working towards exhibitions for the SALA Festival for Barossa Bushgardens and the Mount Pleasant Farmer’s Market. She describes herself as unconventional, creative and realistic. As the Barossa Winter settles in, Heather’s garden will continue to provide her pleasure with mosaics and plants magically mixed. “All I wanted was a productive and sustainable garden surrounded by beautiful things,” she said. “I’ve definitely achieved that.”
