Rip off that business tie and strap on a nail bag, it’s time to unleash your inner tradie. Mr Michael Scheer, of Juncken Home Timber and Hardware in Nuriootpa, has been in the hardware retail business for 34 years and says it’s quality over quantity when it comes to stocking up a basic toolkit to tackle that growing list of weekend DIY jobs around the home. “If you are going to purchase something, make sure it’s not cheap and nasty,” says Michael. “It needs to be quality for it to last so when you come to use it again, it’s ready to go and in good condition.” In today’s throw-away society, Michael says leave that mind-set behind when selecting tools. “Don’t buy anything that is just throw away... buy to last. That’s essential if you are making up a basic DIY kit - get things that will last so you don’t have to replace it every year.” Michael has chosen his top six must-have items for the home and says the selection will cover most of your basic handyman jobs.

1. A cordless drill is the first item for your toolkit. “Nowadays they are all cordless and easy to use,” says Michael. “You definitely need two batteries and lithium ion is the way to go - you have more power and longer lasting battery life.” 2. Buying a boxed set of drill bits is the most cost effective way of buying accessories according to Michael. “A k i t l i k e t h i s h a s ever ything you really need... It’s for putting all your screws in plus drilling fo r b o t h m a s o n r y a n d timber.” M i c h a e l s ays h av i n g everything boxed together in a strong case is also an advantage and will keep you from spending time searching the shed for the right bit for the job. “As long as you buy quality, they’ll all be there ready for you to use next time you need them.”

3. A hammer is an essential toolkit item. Again, look for quality and Michael says a fibreglass handle is the best option. “It’s the rebound and ergonomics of it,” he says. Michael recommends a 450 gram hammer head. “Go for an all rounder, not one that is too heavy that you can’t lift, otherwise you won’t use it properly and if it’s too light, it won’t do anything.” 4. A good quality orbital sander. “Normally everyone needs one and this is a good all round sander to have at home rather than going into other, more specific sanders,” says Michael. “It suits most of your do-ityourself projects besides your real big jobs. Being orbital, it does the best job compared to a sheet sander.” Don’t forget to keep a pack of assorted disks on hand that will cover a full range of things you might need to do. “They’re all velcro these days

so they are easy-on, easy-off.” 5. Everyone knows about a tape measure and the classic tradie’s mantra of measure twice, cut once. “It’s just something you always need,” says Michael. “I’ve chosen this one because of it’s ergonomic design and ease of use.” With rubber grip, large numbers and a button to lock the tape in place, it is easy to read and measure accurately. “It’s rubber tipped too so if you drop it, it is protected and won’t break like some cheaper ones.” 6. A handsaw. Pick a good brand that is reliable and won’t get blunt after one use. Choosing a quality blade is essential but the handle size is a personal choice. Michael says 500 mm is a good length saw with 7 teeth per inch being a general purpose and useful selection. “It’s not too fine and not to coarse - it’s a middle of the range saw tooth.”

Bartsch, the house is perfect - after all, her husband Luke built it. Luke is a second generation builder working alongside his father, James, as part of Bartsch Homes - one of the region’s longest serving builders. Access to such experience, highly skilled local tradespeople and thoughtful planning is evident from the moment you enter the wide hallway. It leads past the formal lounge and master bedroom, with walk-through robe and ensuite, to the spacious living area where a sliding door opens onto the covered pergola to the West. Continued

Winter HOME IDEAS Bartsch home “We wanted to have something that flows really well, with lots of space,” Kristie said. “Having two bathrooms makes life a lot easier with little kids and we wanted a play area for them and a nice big, open plan living/dining/kitchen because that’s where we spend all of our time. “The rooms are big enough so that we can eventually put in a double bed and a desk and turn the playroom into a study. We have the space to grow into this house.” Kristie says her favourite part of the home is the kitchen and open feel of the living area. “I love being able to look out the backyard and see the kids playing. I can do all my cooking and they can be out there playing and I know they can’t get into trouble. They chose to use Plantation Shutters in the front elevation windows, “Given the long windows, we just think it suits the front of the house and we wanted something that would look really great from the outside, not just from the inside.” T h e h o m e i s fa r f ro m ostentatious and offers a tranquil space with clean lines and on-trend coloured accents. Two commissioned pieces from a Jamestown artist bring extra colour, depth and movement. “We haven’t had to add a lot. I like my house to feel really clean and organised so less is best for me. I just like to come home and everything to be as tidy as it can when you’ve got kids! “We wanted light, white and bright, not cluttered. Something modern so that we could put in a few colours and a few eclectic items like the toy box and the yellow hall stand. We can mix and match different materials. Codi is right at home. Kristie believes in using a plain colour on the walls and adding colour and personality through accessories. “It’s easy to change your bed linen, it’s much harder to paint your wall. “We went for whites and greys with duck egg blue which is really on trend, but I have thrown in a bit of green and yellow. The boys rooms are coloured differently.” The four generous sized bedrooms, children’s playroom and a laundry with ample storage make this home as functional as it is stylish. “We used a vinyl plank flooring which is very cost effective and very hard wearing especially with our two young boys and our golden retriever. I’ve found Continued it to be excellent and easy to maintain.”

Your Local Builder - Your Plan or Ours…...

Winter HOME IDEAS The Bartsch family chose zoned ducted reverse cycle air conditioning and because the external walls and ceiling are insulated as well as the bathrooms for sound proofing, the house maintains a consistent temperature. “We find this home is warm in winter and pretty cool in summer. It’s just on the really hot days and really chilly nights that we turn it on.” Use of energy efficient LED down lights, a gas instant hot water system and cook top help lower power consumption further. Kristie’s choice of standard tiles together with neutral colour palette not only lowered building costs, it also ensures the home won’t date. “People get caught up in the moment of needing to spend and if you’ve got the budget, that’s great. But if you’re trying to build a family home on a budget you just have to choose something safe that will look tasteful and not date. “You have to prioritise what you want and the things you can do later down the track. Get the basics done, get the window furnishings and then worry about the things that aren’t necessary right now and do them over time,” Kristie advised. “You get ideas, you look at friends’ houses and see what works for them. Think about what’s on your list of what you need for your family.” A three bay shed was essential for Luke and Kristie said the double garage under main roof, remote control doors and access through the main hallway was always part of their plan. One day they will install an outdoor kitchen and add blinds to the pergola. There is extra landscaping as well as a cubby on the way for the children. But for now, the Bartsch family are content with their home. “This house will still look good in 15-20 years time and it’s where we plan to stay for a while to come.”

Kristie loves to be able to entertain her friends in the formal lounge area and allowing the children to have their own separate space in the home to play safely. The house is designed to grow with the family, with children’s spaces easily transformed to teen retreats in the future.

Winter HOME IDEAS Brightening up for Winter

Margot Walsh, Angaston; Julie Norris, Angaston; Margie Patrick, Eden Valley; Jo Adams, Angaston; Jenni Evans, Keyneton; and Sally Keynes, Keyneton, from the Angaston Garden Quilters group.

Adding colour to the home through homemade decorations can give a house the pop of colour it needs to make a more vibrant surrounding during the Winter season. The Angaston Garden Quilters make a multitude of different quilts with different designs and colours, which are great for keeping warm and adding something brighter during Winter. Jenni Evans, owner of Evandale Homestead in Keyneton, said her choice of fabrics always depends on where it will be placed in a house or whom the quilt will be going too. “If its for children, it’s nice, bright colours, but if its matching décor in a house then I will tie it in with that,” said Jenni. Jo Adams, a member of the quilting group, said that to enjoy quilting, “You have to have a passion for fabric and a flair for it. It’s certainly satisfying to make your own, it also makes you feel happy. You can have quilts absolutely anywhere.” Jo’s picks for this winter are, “lovely vibrant colours, warm colours. I also life floral, the French fabrics are great for that. Also the Liberty fabrics are beautiful, they are one of my favourite designs. Adding stripes or spots can really lift a quilt.” Jo explained that one of the best times of the year for making quilts is during Winter where sitting in front of the open fire putting the fabric together is easiest. “We love it in Winter, when quilting they’re lovely and warm over your laps because they have the warm batting in the middle,” said Jo. Vibrant coloured quilts and pillows are easy to use as décor for couches, chairs and beds, which gives an instant facelift to rooms during the dreary months.

LET’S ASK ERICA Have your gardening questions answered by Barossa Nursery.

Dear Erica, Should I be pruning the Moptop Robinias and by how much? Cath J. Answer: Moptop Robinias come out beautiful and even if pruned. Prune in June or July, cutting back all the branches leaving approximately 30cm. branches. Erica. Dear Erica, When is the best time to prune hydrangeas and fuchsias? Leanne C. Answer: Prune your hydrangeas back now to two fat buds in green wood. If you prune into the brown wood it will not flower this year. With fuchsias wait until August, until the worst of the frosts are over. In August new shoots will be just appearing, so it becomes easy to see where to cut back. Erica. Dear Erica, I received a cyclamen for Mother’s Day. What is the best way to look after it? Judy D. Answer: Cyclamens are best outside, under a tree, where they can naturalise, or under a verandah or patio. They can be grown inside in good direct light but they don’t like artificial heating. There is a saying,“Put your cyclamen out with the cat at night,” and your cyclamen will appreciate the cold air. Water sparingly by capillarity, i.e. allow to draw up water from a saucer or carefully water on the side of the corm, taking care not to water the corm directly. Fertilise regularly with “Thrive Flower and Fruit.” Remove spent flowers by twisting the old flower stem at the base and remove old or yellow leaves. Be aware a cyclamen will start dying back around September and be quite dormant during summer. A dormant cyclamen doesn’t want too much water in summer, so if in a pot, lie the pot on its side, under a tree or shady spot, so when watering it becomes moist but not wet. In late summer/early autumn new leaves will start to appear around the corm. Then stand the pot up and fertilise regularly. Erica.

If you have a concern about your garden, please feel free to write to: “Let’s ask Erica”, c/- Barossa Nursery, Barossa Valley Way, P.O. Box 348, Nuriootpa, 5355.

Winter Gardening

June is the month to buy and plant out bare root roses, deciduous trees and fruit trees, and as always, Barossa Nursery carries a huge range of these. The advantage of buying plants bare root is they are considerably cheaper, the disadvantage is that more things can go wrong with a bare root plant than a potted plant. Proceed as follows when planting a bare root plant: • Prune the rose/tree/fruit tree back by half. For apricots, pruning should be done by the middle of June, or they can get gummosis. • Prepare the hole and place roots evenly around hole. DO NOT PUT FERTILIZER DOWN THE HOLE. You can incorporate well broken down old compost in the hole. • Backfill the hole, ensuring there is a gap between the soil level and the graft, that the graft stands several inches higher than the the soil. This is to make sure soil microorganisms dont eat away at the graft, causing the graft to break or rot. The exception is a grafted Lilac, which is grafted onto a privet stock. Here the graft is placed below the soil level, so the Lilac can start growing on its own roots being supported by the privet, until the privet gradually rots away. • Water in the well with a Seasol solution, and repeat one week later. • Make sure the new plant is always regularly watered, for the first year. One watering can a week, or a spray with a hose is not adequate watering in summer. Form a moat around the plant, and water with drippers or have a hose trickling quite slowly all night, once or twice a week. • The new dwarf fruit trees require staking, as they produce a lot of fruit, and the branches can become quite heavy, putting strain on the graft.

Frost protection in Winter

Frost can cause a lot of damage in winter, so the best way to protect against frost is as follows: • Water frost tender plants regularly with Seasol, or apply Seamungus, as seaweed makes the cell wall thicker and stronger, and more able to cope with heat, drought, FROST, pests and disease. • Covering up with an old blanket, newspaper, etc is the best for frost protection. • Spray you plants with Droughtshield or Envy. This puts a thin plastic coating on the leave and can make a difference of 4°C. • Get up early in the morning and squirt off any frost with water. • If any plant does get its tips burnt by frost, do not prune back until mid September, when the chances of frost are low. Otherwise newly exposed tips can burn back further, with another frost.

My son-in-law, Rohan, decided to give my daughter, Kristee, a surprise trip to the Chelsea Flower Show for her special birthday and would I go along with her. What an opportunity! So it was all planned in secret. We would fly out to Amsterdam first to see the Keukenhof (a tulip display), then fly into London for the Chelsea Flower Show, which just happened to be on her birthday. We were having a family birthday party beforehand, so Kristee flew down from Cairns on the Thursday. Rohan flew down on the Friday with her passport and extra clothes and that night at the family birthday party, Rohan presented her present: tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show. She was a bit shocked and highly delighted. We were home on the Saturday and left for the airport at 2.30 a.m. Sunday morning. We saw lots and lots of wonderful things, as you do in Europe, but the highlight for me was Keukenhof. We went on a bus tour to the tulip gardens and it was the most beautiful perfect garden I have ever seen. Keukenhof is a large garden of undulating ground, lawned and in between swathes of massive tulips in massed garden beds, perfectly colour co-ordinated, often underplanted with Grape Hyacinth (Blue). The tulips came in colours of white, yellow, orange, red, pink, mauve, blue, purple and even brown! There were single, pointed and double ones, striped, multicoloured, feathered and parrot styles. It was semi-shaded by tall, lush Elms and Linden trees, just having burst into fresh leaf. Not a leaf out of place, it was perfectly maintained by the thirty gardeners who look after Keukenhof. There were also huge azaleas and rhododendrons in flower, beautiful foliaged Japanese maples, large cones of topiaried Yews and pleached Horse Chestnut.

A conservatorium had large displays of Lilliums as well. It was a feast for the eyes, it was so beautiful. Keukenhof is only open in April, till mid May and is visited by millions. Another highlight was Kew Gardens in London. It is botanically and historically the most impor tant Botanic Gardens in the world, as well as being one of the largest, covering over 300 acres. There were large lawned areas covered by stately trees, including Purple Beech, Weeping Beech, Cedars of Lebanon (as in the Bible), red flowering Indian Chestnuts, white flower Horse Chestnuts, birches, hawthorns and conifers. There was a rhododendron garden with huge shrubs in full flower in colours of white, yellow, pink, red and purple. There were large peony gardens in full flower, large perennial gardens, large kitchen gardens and natural woodland gardens with Queen Anne’s lace, perennial Forget Me Not, blue Scillas and English daisies. Little squirrels were running around the woodland gardens. There are quite a number of large conservatoriums including the Princess of Wales Conservatory where there were giant waterlillies, plus a lot of tropical and arid plants from around the world. We looked through Queen Charlotte’s house on the property, as well as the adjacent kitchens. These kitchens were built in the 17th Century with the most up to date methods at the time and they were quite amazing. There was a long bench along one wall with a series of furnaces underneath and large spit roasts. This kitchen was right next to the extensive herb garden. We went along the tree top walk there, overlooking huge trees. Kew Gardens is very grand, elegant, interesting and beautiful, we walked for miles around it. The third highlight was the Chelsea Flower Show.

By Erica Bartsch

In the large covered hall were massive displays by nurseries, beautifully and flamboyantly put together. We saw lots of fabulous plants. Some of the different plants being Double Lilliums, Double Hippeastrums, Black Polyanthus, Striped Streptocarpus, Blue Poppies, large green Spider Chrysanthemums, double and fluffy clematis, pink and white Lilly of the Valley. There was a display of dainty Tiarellas, bold hupins, foxgloves, tulips, peonies, David Austin roses and even a big display of potatoes, coming in colours of black, blue, red, pink and cream. There was a large disply of colourfully foliaged Japanese Maples, a display of variegated Hostas, huge Alliums and an entire display of Thai Castle made from exotic orchids. A really fantastic display of a giant tea party had a tablecloth made from moss, dianthus and other flowers. The seeds on the chairs were made with succulents and flowers and the giant teacup and saucer were decorated with flowers as were the giant cupcakes and biscuits! The outside landscape areas were excellently displayed, however a bit difficult to see because of the crowds. Allied trades had lovely conservatories, enclosed outdoor rooms, lovely pots, furniture and one display had life sized horses made from drift wood. While in London, we also looked at Big Ben and Westminster Parliament House and Westminster Abbey. We went though Westminster Cathedral, saw Buckingham Palace and had a tour though St. Paul’s Cathedral, which was so magnificent, we stayed for Evensong. We went on a tour to Bath and Stonehenge and looked through the Tower of London. The gardens, the history and the architecture made this a wonderful, enjoyable holiday.

Surprise trip to Chelsea Flower Show Erica Bartsch, owner of the Barossa Nursery, has recently arrived back from overseas after travelling around with her daughter, Kristee Semmler, and her son in law, Rohan Semmler, for a surprise present to visit flower shows in Europe. The birthday surprise was for Erica’s daughter, who is involved with a nursery in Queensland and an avid flower enthusiast. The surprise trip was organised by Kristee’s husband in secret before he told Erica of his plans. Erica said Kristee had watched

a television show about the Chelsea Flower Show and told her mother that she would love to go one day. Kristee flew into the Barossa four days before departing to celebrate her birthday with family, with no knowledge of what was about to occur. “She was dumbfounded and shocked. No whiff of it at all. A complete surprise, then we flew off two days later,” said Erica. Erica was lucky enough to be included in the surprise and to travel to Amsterdam and England

for the separate flower shows. The family visited the famous Chelsea Flower Show in England and the Keukenhof Gardens in Amsterdam. Erica said, “We had the best holiday, you could just take photos everywhere. So many colours. “It was the most perfect garden, almost like a heaven. It was a very garden orientated holiday.” Erica said that “Kristee is just as hooked on gardening as I am. I think I must have rubbed off on her. Everywhere was candy for our eyes.”

One method she has been using is a Japanese invention called ‘Kokedama’, which involves wrapping the root of the succulents (planted in soil) in a water-retaining moss, and securing with twine. “I was looking up different ideas one day, and got inspired through all these pictures I was seeing. I tried to come up with ideas that were a little different. “The Kokedama method is really cool, because the moss holds in moisture for a long time. I usually soak them in some water in the sink for about 10 minutes once a week when they feel dry. They are very absorbent so they don’t drip.” Sara has even had enough interest to start up a small home business on the side. “I thought I would see what would happen if I started to advertise, but I’ve just had people everyday ordering little plants for housewarming or engagement gifts.” With hundreds of succulent varieties, there are colours, patterns and styles to suit every home. “I just love all of them, there are so many different varieties – even mutations of two varieties. “The cool thing is that you can grow a plant from just one leaf. You just have to let the leaf dry so it gets a callous over the end, then you can just place it in some dirt. I have grown most of my plants from cuttings.” Sara has even got her family involved, “We brought some cup and saucers home one day and the kids had a lot of fun potting them. “Originally I was just looking for little things that I could do to brighten up the area. I guess it’s just a hobby that went overboard and now I have too many plants.”

It all started a year ago when Ms Sara Reynolds of Angaston bought one little succulent plant to brighten up her home. Now, growing and collecting them has become her hobby. “I soon became obsessed with growing succulents and now they’re all over my house,” Sara said. “Originally my idea was to have some greenery on the veranda, but then it grew to bringing little plants inside. “They are just so easy to grow, they are one of the simplest plants to propagate.” Succulents are ideal for keeping indoors as they are low-maintenance, only requiring a little natural sunlight and water when the soil is dry. Sara suggests kitchen and bathroom windowsills are good places for them to thrive, or rooms that have skylights. “I was drawn to succulents because they are so hard to kill. Most of them are suited to this sort of climate and handle frost pretty well, which is good for the Barossa.” As a mum of three young children, Sara said that it’s nice to have something to concentrate on “I would call it my hobby. It really takes my mind off things, and gives me time to just tune out and do something that is relaxing and fun.” Her passion for succulents has also allowed her to be creative with different methods of planting them. “I collect them in ways that I don’t have to plant them in the ground as we are living in a rental property,” she said.
