I am so excited as I think about the 2015 Barossa Vintage Festival and it seems incredible that the celebrations are here already! It has been an honour to serve as the President of the 2015 Barossa Vintage Festival – something I could never have imagined as a child watching the festivities of the street parade, or seeing the brightly coloured maypole towering above the Tanunda Oval. I would like to thank our Barossa community, who once again have contributed so much towards the success of this event. I hope you’ve had an opportunity to explore the fabulous festival programme, and spend some time deliberating over what your 2015 Barossa Vintage Festival calendar will look like. As always, our Barossa community has come up with a fantastic range of events that celebrate both the heritage and culture that we hold dear, as well as the many innovative things that are occurring in the Barossa today. The 2015 Barossa Vintage Festival will have some changes, which came about through community consultations after the last festival. This year’s festival offers a slightly shorter five day format, and has been placed in the school holidays, to allow families the maximum opportunity to enjoy the celebrations. There are four key festival events that I would love to invite you to be part of. The Ziegenmarkt is a fun and important celebration of the Barossa early days of settlement (I remember watching with excitement the recreation of this marketplace from the verandah of my childhood home, on Goat Square).

The Festival Parade is always a riot of colour and creativity, and this year the festivities will continue on to the Tanunda Oval, where Barossa Comes Home will be reminiscent of so many fantastic vintage festivals of years gone by. The Feast is a new take on the Vintage Ball, with the Tanunda Show Hall coming alive with a night of Barossa food, wine and fellowship. One of our desires as a festival committee was to ensure that the festival is a true time of celebration for our local community, both honouring our history and recognising the achievements of our present generations. I wish you a wonderful festival – enjoy everything our Barossa has to offer!

Ziegenmarkt honours Barossa traditions Goat Square is about to be transformed into a bustling German market of the late 1800’s – called Ziegenmarkt; complete with ready-to-eat produce, smallgoods and even a live auction featuring bales of straw, a 10kg tub of sauerkraut and a four-foot-long mettwurst. And while the market will honour the traditions of Barossan food in times gone by (and have most stall-holders dressing up in period costume), it will also embrace contemporary food culture, and the community in the present day. So while you can get your fix of Kranski and Sauerkraut rolls, Kartoffelkuchen (a traditional German potato fritter), Pfannkuchen (a traditional German pancake), and Rote Grütze (a grape-based dessert), you’ll also be able to have granola, yoghurt and a latte for breakfast, purchase freshly cut flowers, visit the Barossa Valley ice-cream lady, or grab a bacon and egg roll from the Gomersal Community group. There’ll also be olive oil, honey biscuits, jams, preserves, cheeses, fruit and vegetables, plus the

Apex Bakery will be selling their Bienenstich and Streuselkucken cakes out of their old van, and even the local school will make an appearance running a cake stall with home-made lemonade. Also happening in the square will be the live auction – featuring a huge range of goodies, a petting zoo, pony rides, and a goat milking display. And if that wasn’t enough for the children – in the middle of their school holidays – the Barossa Public Library is also taking up residence, telling stories to children both in English and German, aptly including Three Billy Goats Gruff. When so many markets look and feel the same, the Ziegenmarkt stands alone in its utterly unique approach, its cross-section of food and delicacies, and its eclectic mix of home-made, hand-crafted goods. A morning to take a step back in time, with one foot firmly in the now.

The quiet village of Bethany is home to some of the strongest remaining links to the German-speaking immigrants who moved to the now-famous valley in 1842. During this year’s Barossa Vintage Festival you are invited to take part in the activities of the village, centred around the Bethany Lutheran Church and focused on the history and the culture of the Barossa’s first settlement. But if you’re expecting lederhosen and thighslapping, you might be surprised. The Silesian immigrants actually came from a different part of Germany than their lederhosenwearing neighbours. In fact, the first settlers in Bethany came from the former Kingdom of Prussia (which, if you overlay onto one of today’s maps includes part of eastern Germany, Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Denmark, Belgium, Czech Republic and Switzerland) and more specifically Silesia. Originally known as Bethanien (Bett-arn-eeanne), the village actually owes its existence to the congregation of Lutheran people who established the village. The pioneering families cleared the woodland to establish a village in a Prussian Hufendorf style (hufen = farmlet). The long narrow strips of land reflected the farming community the families knew from home, with cottages dotted along the village street, and farming strips reaching behind them and along the creek. The village layout remains basically unchanged. The first church service was held under a tree, and while the original house of worship is no longer, the current Bethany church has been the centre of the village since it was built in 1883 (at a cost of 723 pounds, using bluestone from the Schrapel quarry in the foothills at the eastern end of the village). If you plan your visit to Bethany on April 16, you will be able to listen to the pipe organ recital in the church from 1-2 p.m. (entry by donation). The role of the Lutheran pastors and school teachers

has always been crucial in Bethany. The first resident minister was Pastor Heinrich Meyer, from 1846 to 1862. He is buried at Bethany Pioneer Cemetery, which you can visit on a guided historic walk on April 15-17. The walks depart the church at both 9.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. There is a small charge, adults $4 and children $2. Included in the activities at the Bethany Lutheran Church will be a very modern take on Sunday School, known as Godly Play. You can also take in plenty of history at the ‘Step back in Time’ display, which is open from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. each day between April 13 and 17. The Silesian migrants made their way by ox cart to Bethany (and you will be able to find a traditional wagon among this year’s display) and they set to work building their homes, growing crops and grazing animals. All week you will be able to see some of the skills that have survived from the early days in Bethany, when the self-sufficient village relied on the hardwork and different skills of its villagers: noodle making, butter churning, rope making and timber craftsmanship are just some of the examples. The activities and working displays put on by the members of the Bethany Lutheran Church will provide a snapshot into village life throughout the history of this special part of the Barossa. Light lunches and devonshire teas will be served daily. If you want to further immerse yourself in the village, then you should book a spot at the storytelling evening on April 16. You will be treated to stories around the campfire and enjoy a ‘schluck and a schnitte’ (Barossa Deutsch for a ‘little bit to drink and a little bit to eat’ - but if you know Bethany hospitality, you’ll know there’s nothing little about their meals). After hosting 10 successful Harvest Markets during the Barossa Vintage Festival, it was time for a change and the Yalumba Festival Garden was born. Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 15, the Yalumba Festival Garden is the must attend event of the Barossa Vintage Festival. Designed as a day for the whole family to enjoy, there will be the traditional highlights of cooking class with Jordan Theodoros, a museum tasting and the magnificent Signature lawn filled with food for all ages. Parents can enjoy the culinary delights of Tracy Collins, Saskia Beer, Colin Sheppard, Matteo Carboni and Elani Michau, matched to premium Yalumba wine, and the children have not been forgotten with Barossa Country Cooking, Barossa Cheese Company and some of

the aforementioned chefs catering specifically to children. Music will fill the front lawn, with special guest Ash Gale during the afternoon providing the tunes. The children can be entertained with large scale old school games, a scoop of Barossa Valley ice cream, cooking classes with Rosa Matto, face painting or perhaps even getting their hands dirty with some pottery from Really Useful Pots. Before you leave the Festival Garden you can fill your arms with local produce from Kurianda Barossa, Trevallie Orchards, Barossa Country Biscuits or the collection of producers at the Farmers Market Stall and then catch a glimpse of the Yalumba coopers plying their trade.

Barossa Wine Chapters Auction 2015 Barossa as the leading fine wine region in Australia with 30 Barossa wines listed in the latest classification, the largest number from a single region. “This is a Barossa wine auction not to be missed,” said James March, Chief Executive of BGWA. “With nearly 300 lots from 60 wineries on offer, there is a full range of Barossa wines to choose from. “The Barossa winemakers have been generous in searching out rare vertical collections of back vintages, special releases, large format and Langton’s Classified Wines. “A particular highlight is a rare collection of wines from the late Peter Lehmann’s own cellar, with Dave and Phil Lehmann curating the wines to ensure that they are the best representatives of the wines in the cellar from the 1960’s and 1970’s.” Other highlights of the auction are from iconic Barossa producers such as Henschke, with a one-off Imperial of the 2009 Hill of Grace, Torbreck and Grant Burge Wines. Artisanal wineries, such as Tscharke and Glen Eldon, are entering the auction for the first time plus a number of money can’t buy experiences are being offered. A philanthropic tradition that was established at the first auction in 1965 continues with the net proceeds of the auction going to supporting the Barossa Vintage Festival and local charities. Money has already been raised for a range of charities through the complementary “Lunch with a Barossa Legend” table auction that was held in December with nearly $3,000 going to winemakers’ nominated charities.

Avid wine collectors and enthusiasts can create their own Barossa wine collection, direct from Barossa winemakers’ cellars, by bidding in the Barossa Wine Chapters Auction in April, 2015. For the first time in the auction’s 50 year history, prospective buyers can bid online from April 2 to April 17, meaning they can take part in the auction from anywhere in Australia and around the world. In addition, the live auction is still being held in the Barossa on Friday, April 17, continuing the tradition of the excitement and sense of occasion that a live auction creates. A special selection of wine and experiences are being auctioned live, by Andrew Caillard MW, complemented by a Barossa inspired lunch at the Wolf Blass Visitor Centre. The Barossa Wine Chapters Auction, presented by the Barossa Grape & Wine Association (BGWA), is the evolution of the Barossa Wine Auction that has been held as part of the Barossa Vintage Festival since 1965. Taking inspiration from other renowned auctions such as Hospice de Beaune and Auction Napa Valley, BGWA is setting the ambitious goal for the auction to earn its place as one of the world’s top regional wine auctions in the next 10 years. Partnering with Langton’s is an important step in taking the auction to the next level. Langton’s expertise lies in fine wine auctions and delivering auctions through an online platform, giving all prospective buyers the confidence in the quality and provenance of the wines being offered. Making your very own masterpiece from wood Ever wanted to make a masterpiece out of wood, something that you can feel proud of making and not only enjoy making but showing your family and friends? Well Michael Mason of The Woodcarvers Haven can help you do this. Indeed in the past 25 years he has helped many local people do this as well as being an ambassador to the Barossa Valley and bringing in many customers from all over Australia. Be it a small sculpture to a large rocking horse or small picture frame to a four poster bed, Michael has taught it all. Hear It Through the Grapevine Barossa, the recordings, transcripts have been developed to record the voices and stories of the region’s influential wine heritage. Ranging from small family grape growers and industry innovators, to winemakers with extensive careers across some of the Barossa’s world famous wineries the collection includes recordings and recollections of renowned Barossa families including Lehmann, Irvine, Binder, Deans, Wilksch, Lindner, Wigan, Gramp, Habermann and Schiller. This collection provides a rare snapshot of the Barossa wine industry for today and future generations. The Barossa Council’s Library and Heritage Manager, Tania Paull and Heritage Officer, Jo Zander invite the community and visitors to the event to savour their festival experience and learn about the Barossa’s vignerons and winemakers, along with the skill and expertise used to create the wines that are so thoroughly enjoyed today.

The Barossa Council Library is embracing this year’s Vintage Festival by hosting a unique event, Hear It Through the Grapevine. Hear It Through the Grapevine will be held in The Barossa Council Chamber, 43-51 Tanunda Road, Nuriootpa from 2 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16. Bookings are essential and can be made through the library on 8563 8440. The event will launch a unique collection of remarkable oral histories from some of the Barossa’s most renowned wine industry families and will be available for listening online via the library website. The recordings provide insights into the lives of those who have been named Vigneron of the Year and Winemaker of the Year by the Barons of Barossa, at the annual Declaration of Vintage. Welcome to Festival’s first Bohemian Tea Room With the 1858 Bootmaker’s Cottage, now a well renowned Bed & Breakfast, Fiona Koch’s current passion is the restoration of the adjoining Bootmaker’s Workshop. The Bootmaker’s Cottage & Workshop at 567 Lindsay Park Road, Moculta will play host to the Barossa Vintage Festival’s first ‘Bohemian Tea Room’. Grapetreading – a Festival tradition Yes it is on again! Two participants arm in arm stomping for two minutes on 20 kilograms of premium Barosssa Grenache port grapes, attempting to beat the previous best juice extraction! Your only chance to do this will be on Tanunda Oval, Saturday, April 18, as there will be no Town Day heats as in previous Festivals. One tread only per team with highest extraction on the day wins the Australian Cork Company Trophy. Generous other prizes available for the top six teams.

It is anticipated to have a secondary schools competition for the LiebichWein Trophy, an inter-winery competition, an inter-town competition and all-comers for interested spectators. Treading will be in three heats at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Grapetreading is a great spectacle and is great fun to be involved. It is a true Barossa tradition. My time as 2013 Barossa Vintage Festival Young Ambassador By Emily Kroschel Lots has definitely happened in the last two years. During my time mentoring the new 2015 Ambassadors I remembered how nervous I was going through the same process as they have. Now it is all drawing to an end and a great time to reflect. The 2013 programme was run by Sarah Noack and the Vintage Festival Committee and we had a great year. We had some ups and downs, but so did the entire Vintage Festival. So for 2015, Sarah Noack, Linda Parbs and myself planned a slightly different programme for the Ambassadors - not diving them into the deep end.... more of a mentoring programme which so far, is running just to plan. 2015 Vintage Festival is being run by Tourism Barossa, who are overseeing the running of the Young Ambassador Programme, but it has run independently this year. We have simplified the programme into mentoring information sessions, the bus trips - that give the ambassadors an insight into the running of local businesses, their personal projects and then dividing them into the four main events run by Tourism Barossa during the 2015 Barossa Vintage Festival. During my time as ambassador I have achieved a lot, both community wise and personally. Firsty, I got married to my amazingly supportive husband Matthew, who listened to every idea I had during the lead up to winning Young Ambassador, but then also after when I was given the opportunity to build the 2015 programme. I was invited to many different events or meetings to talk about myself and the programme, so many opportunities were in front of me, that perhaps might not have been there before. I used my prize money to travel to America in late 2014, where we visited the Napa Valley, a region so similar to ours in many ways, in the eyes of a tourist. My aim for the trip was to better my knowledge on how to inform tourists of our region and to meet their needs in all different aspects. I am currently working at Barossa Valley Cheese Company in Angaston, where we see over 50,000 plus visitors per year. With every one of those customers, I feel the need to pour my passion of the Barossa onto them and work out the best plans for them to enjoy their day. Our recent ambassador visit to the Barossa Library has made this passion pour out even quicker. It’s amazing the way you can teach visitors the pride and love we have for our home here. So

the research we did during our trip was definitely worthwhile. I was also able to finish my TAFE studies with the remaining of my award, receiving my Diploma in Events Management, and then adding to that with further studies during the Future Leader’s Programme, which I was also asked to attend after becoming Ambassador. I have stayed a part of the community in many ways including several committees, staying involved and taking part in things. You may have all heard about my success at the Angaston Show. Two second places aren’t bad for someone that’s never made cheese at home before!! But my biggest task since becoming ambassador has been the 2015 Ambassador programme. I have been able to mentor the next 12 young people through their lessons, projects, bus trips and their involvement in the sub-committees. I am also on the Vintage Festival committee and have found this a great learning experience. The programme has a great connection with the Vintage Festival, Tourism Barossa and the festival director, Andrew Dundon have been extremely patient and helpful towards us and the Young Ambassador programme. Cannot wait for the 2015 announcement and to see what the new Ambassador has to bring to the planning committee so we can continue this tradition for another festival. My favourite events for the 2015 festival would be: Wednesday, April 15 - Yalumba Festival Garden. Thursday, April 16 - Ziegenmarkt, Goat Square. Friday, April 17 - The Feast. Saturday, April 18 - Barossa Comes Home. Funnily enough I’ll be at all four of these events with my Barossa Cheese hat on, but cannot wait to be a part of these fantastic community events, that are mostly family friendly and affordable. The Feast will be the time to celebrate glitz and glam - so for all of you that want a look at the Ambassadors with their hair down and on parade, this will be the event to get to! I hope that everyone (local or visiting) gets to at least one Vintage Festival event. The committee have gone to great lengths for this year’s festival to start going back to our roots. There are lots of changes that have been made, but most of these improvements! Make sure if you have your usual local commitments, that you still get to another event that suits you! As they are all too good to be missed!

Noticed something different around town lately? Maybe a bit more straw? A bit more colour popping up around shop-fronts, gardens, vineyards and fields? Yep, the scarecrows are back! And this year there are almost 70 of them, all hailing the start of the Barossa Vintage Festival. Now running for ten years, The Scarecrow Trail has become a unique community art form. Lovingly hand-crafted using a range of materials, they have been devised and assembled by local children, families, wineries and businesses and range from the wacky to the extraordinary. The community is asked to participate by voting for their favourite scarecrow in the ‘People’s Choice’ category, with the most popular to receive a $1,000 travel voucher from Clarke and Turner Travel Associates. The winning scarecrow will be announced at Barossa Comes Home on April 18 at Tanunda Oval. Voting may be undertaken by dropping a form into the Visitor’s Information Centre, or by taking a selfie with a scarecrow and uploading it to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #BVFscarecrow. Some of the intriguing and eclectic characters along the Trail include: Clary Sage and The Droid in Angaston, Bill and Ben in Greenock, Watermelon Man and Witch Wine in Nuriootpa, Maggie the Milliner in Seppeltsfield, Lego Man in Stockwell and Craneford Cronies in Truro. Meanwhile Tanunda has gone hard with its contribution - from Bertha the Vintage Queen, Gondola Ride and Despicable to Granny and Papa with Harry the Dog, Jack’s Annual Bath, The Water Worrier and Yoska and Virag. The Barossa Vintage Festival Parade on Saturday, April 18, has been a treasured tradition since 1949, and is considered the most boisterous biennial event in the Barossa. More than 70 floats will travel along the Barossa Valley Way between Nuriootpa and Tanunda and will end at Tanunda Oval as Barossa Comes Home begins. Everyone’s involved, from the 1st Nuriootpa Scouts, Liebich Limousines and Barossa Goldfields Historical Society to The Grapes of Ross, Barossa Valley Pony Club and Chateau Tanunda and so much more. Murray Street will be closed from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. and will come alive with a festive market place, with amusement rides and entertainment. This free event is proudly brought to you by the Nuriootpa Futures Association in conjunction with over 20 businesses who have supported the event in sponsorships. The purchase of a $10 wrist band will allow for unlimited access to all rides during the day. The street party will start at 9 a.m. with the popular Groovy Grape Road, a scavenger hunt for the children and a chalk street art competition. Bring a chair and watch the Vintage Parade which will commence at 10 a.m. from Penrice Road through Murray Street on its way to Tanunda. Liebich family proud fortified producers Fortified wines are steeped in the history of the Barossa and the Liebich family who have built up a reputation as one of the Barossa’s best producers of fortified wines. The Liebich family are proud custodians of a collection of fortified barrels spanning over 80 years. These fine liqueurs are blended from a selection of vintages over a 25 year timespan resulting in supremely attractive dessert wines.

All wines are made by Ron Liebich from fruit grown on his property at Rowland Flat. This tasting is a unique opportunity to compare wines from single grape varieties matched with four distinctly flavoured, handmade chocolate truffles. In terms of the high cost of running a household, we have seen large increases in the Emergency Services Levy really hit home, especially the unfairness this increase has on those who volunteer their time in our emergency services. We are a community built on volunteer spirit and this is just another hurdle that will erode that goodwill and discourage people from volunteering.

The Keyneton Heritage Trail is a 9.2 km loop circuit with eight major sites marked with interpretive signs mounted on epidote rock indigenous to Keyneton and supplied by Barossa Quarries. The historical provenance of each site reveals links to a distinct theme of faith and temperance. From George Fife Angas’ son-in-law, pioneering North Rhine settler, Henry Evans’ support of three acres (1.2ha) to the dissenting Alte Lutherische to build a church and school for their fledgling congregation; to the district’s first English school serving as a house of worship, and meeting house for the District Council of North Rhine; and the Temperance Hotel built at by Henry’s widow, Sarah Lindsay Evans, serving non alcoholic beverages. History of the sites is supported with guide pamphlets enabled through a Community Projects and Events Grant from the Mid Murray Council containing a map to self-guide trail users to numerous additional points of interest.

The Keyneton Heritage Trail is a new feature on the local landscape being launched at a village fair on Sunday, April 19. The Village Fair is an event for all the family to enjoy from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. with children’s activities, displays, fabulous food, and Rehn Bier, Heathvale and Evandale Estate wines providing non temperant beverages. A permanent attraction for walkers and sightseeing tourists created by the Keyneton Progress Association, the trail shares history along local roadways central to the settlement of North Rhine (now Keyneton) and will be blessed by Pastor Erik Braunack-Mayer at the official launch to open the Village Fair.
