Beryl and Craig Hunter have created a beautiful garden oasis at their Seppeltsfield home over the past five years. “We wanted to create a garden that gives something all year round,” said Beryl. “Spring time is the best though with lots of things to see and the trees coming into leaf and flowers blooming.” Beryl and Craig have created their garden all by themselves, which they started when they bought their 40 acre property five years ago. When they first moved into the home, all that surrounded it was mowed paddocks of weeds and a few big eucalypt trees. The pair started by building a main path, before branching off to creating smaller paths and a garden in concentric circles around the house. Now, the garden is filled with native grasses, irises, strappy plants, nooks, blossom trees, Mediterranean plants, rocks, seating areas, lawn, deciduous and native trees, ponds and art. “It’s mostly an eclectic mix of natives and a few other plants I love,” said Beryl. “Gardens are like art, it’s a creative outlet. “I love putting a silver plant next

to a purple plant or something strappy next to a leafy plant.” Beryl’s favourite plants in her garden are the native grasses, which she said she absolutely loves in a landscape. She acknowledged that she adores the movement in them, their height and how they make themselves look fuller, adding that this definitely isn’t a rose garden. Beryl explained that the best thing about creating a garden is that it’s different all the time. The pair have chosen to introduce many trees, both exotic and native, into their garden to give them more shade long term. “The idea is to cool the climate of the house and the garden through these bigger trees and shade, changing the microclimate and making the property quieter,” said Beryl. Beryl’s number one tip for gardening is to know what works in your particular soil. To her it’s all about trial and error and moving/replacing plants that don’t work in that spot. “Get advice from your garden centre on what types of plants will work in your soil and be conscious of it,” she said. When asked if she would describe herself as a garden expert, Beryl replied ‘not at all’.

She said she absolutely loves her garden oasis, but has received lots of information from a local landscaper, garden centres, television shows and books. Beryl and Craig’s garden has been selected for the Open Garden Scheme next year, something which has been a goal for them over the years. “We’ve been to lots of open gardens that are old established, where we’ve thought oh this is lovely but we haven’t got 100 year old trees,” said Beryl. It was for this reason that they entered their garden - to inspire others around them that you can create something beautiful completely from scratch and cool the climate around your home. The garden process for Beryl and Craig hasn’t been all ‘smooth sailing’, as their property/garden is on a slope. That was a huge construction job for the pair but they believe it’s more than worth it, with the slope adding ‘interest’ to their garden. “We’re starting to reap the rewards,” said Beryl. “It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this stage and I can finally enjoy it without working in it all the time.” Beryl said it’s amazing to see that their garden has brought in

all the wildlife and birds, especially parrots. Beryl admitted that when they first bought the property, the yard was so enormous she didn’t know where to start. To her, it made sense to break it down into paths and complete sections gradually over the years, something which she strongly recommends to everyone else wanting to begin a garden. “Constructing the lawn area was the last project we had over autumn and summer, now we’re just going to keep going with the rest of the garden,” she said. Beryl’s advice for those beginning their garden is “Always take photos. Then you can take photos when you first begin and look at the progress you’ve done each year.” She said this is so important to be able to see how the garden changes and allows you to appreciate what you can achieve. “Gardens are about creating spaces to get you out of the house and sharing them with friends and family” said Beryl. “You can sit inside and view your garden but you’ll get so much more enjoyment being outside and able to smell and see it.”

The ‘rusty balls’ artwork, created by Beryl is now a feature in her garden.

Beryl Hunter has spent the past four years turning her block into a garden oasis.

The garden features many pathways surrounded by luscious plants and grasses.

HOME IDEAS

Stockwell home is a hive of activity Andy Milne’s outdoor entertainment area took eight years to finish, but with a lot of hardwork, he turned his backyard into a relaxing outside area to share with his friends and family. The entertainment area surrounds his Stockwell home; it was created for his children and designed to fit their needs. Andy and his wife, Christine, have a large extended family and found that the big backyard space caters perfectly to holding large quantities of people during festive get togethers. “It’s a great place to sit back and unwind... It’s fantastic, as the warmer weather sets in, it becomes a hive of activity around here,” said Andy. “Christmas here is very busy, we can have between 30-40 people here on the day, so [the outdoor area] engages itself to that atmosphere.

“Entertaining wise, it’s a really good area. It’s really those outdoor aspects, the games room for the kids, and even the dogs get their own area as well.” A lot of the work on the entertainment area was done by Andy’s family. The main part of the project initially involved removing three to four hundred tons of dirt from the property. They placed concrete around the house and began small landscaping. The pool was placed into the ground after that. The retaining wall and concrete was done by Andy, while the paving was done by his brotherin-law, Nick Bishop. It has been a developing family project that constantly changes as time passes. It still holds a modern look, while keeping that family feel.

The charcoal fencing and surrounding grey strutures and art, complements well with the reddish timber that surrounds the pool. There is a lawn area at the front for people to lounge near the pool and a larger lawn space around the back of the house that is more suitable for backyard sport. A children’s games room is decked out with a pool table, juke box and adorned by sports trophies. A barbecue and chef station is situated in the entertainment area with ample space to cook up food for large groups of people. There is always a place to sit and enjoy good company, whether it is by the pool or cosied up next to the house. Luxurious outside furniture is speckled around the area to cater to everyone. A lot of thought was given to the design and

look to make sure the entertainment area fit the needs of his family. Andy said, “It’s more the satisfaction you get out of what you have done. You have created something that is fit for purpose. “It depicted what we were looking for. There were bits and pieces that comes from looking at different things or seeing different things in magazines. “It just sort of formed as it got older and we have made things and changed things.” Andy said the pool is mostly ready for use at the moment, so he doesn’t have to worry about getting it into shape. With Spring now upon us, the outdoor area he built with his family will continue to entertain any and all people who visit in the future. DH4245

BUILDING A NEW HOME?

HOME IDEAS

Alfresco living made easy Spring is upon us! Brian and Angie Grant, owners of Barossa Carpet Court, are preparing for the season with their new range of outdoor blinds. The collection consists of zip track blinds, zip screen blinds, canvas blinds, PVC blinds and outdoor roller shutters.

“People these days are doing more and more alfresco living,” said Brian. Brian believes that people are choosing to build outdoor living areas, rather than formal lounge and dining rooms. Outdoor blinds can be used to enclose a living area, to block rain, dust, dirt, act as a windshield

and as a sun protector. This increases the comfort of outdoor entertaining and also enables use all year round. Brian explains that roller shutters are also a popular option for numerous reasons. For example, shift workes who require complete darkness to sleep in daylight hours. Shutters will

also provide insulation and security. A big advantage for Brian is that Carpet Court is the largest flooring and window specialist in Australia. “It gives us fantastic buying power, so you can get the major brands at very competitive pricing,” he said.

Marg and Andrew designing their forever home Creating a space that was both beautiful and eco-friendly was at the top of the list for Nuriootpa home owners and builders, Andrew Kassebaum and Marg Kubish. Andrew and Marg have been living in their ‘forever home’ for three months now and say they ‘wouldn’t change a thing in the whole house’. “Variances to the design were only one per cent of the total build cost,” said Andrew. “That tells us the design was right from the very beginning.” It all began when a beautiful Nuriootpa vineyard became available, with panoramic views looking over the valley floor and parts of Nuriootpa, Angaston and surrounds. A boomerang design was the starting concept of the home, with two wings connecting to one central location. To Andrew and Marg, the idea of one central location was vital in their design as an ‘all in one spot’. “The idea was to have one open living, dining and kitchen space, rather than having several living areas spread throughout the home,” said Marg. “It’s about bringing people together

in the one space.” The pair wanted to design a home where, in the warmer months, you can live, entertain and cook outside, but in the cooler months just bunker down inside, with the same spectacular views. In the central area, more than 50% of the walls are replaced with double glazed windows, meaning the pair have endless views of hills, countryside and vineyards all year round. Besides amazing vinyl, concrete look floors, the home includes heated flooring. The design uses the mass of the slab, heating it up during the day and releasing heat at night. The kitchen is designed to have two people in the space at once, with large distances between the island bench and cupboards. The island bench was designed without a sink or cook top, as Andrew and Marg wanted to keep it clear for preparation, serving and eating. “At the moment this is just our basic kitchen, we’re going to focus on our outdoor space, where we’ll do most of our cooking, entertaining and dining,” said Andrew.

“We have commissioned a custom made all stainless steel pizza oven to be the centre piece of the outdoor kitchen area.” The kitchen also features an all glass splash back, adding another entry point for light in the home. In the lounge room, the feeling of space and luxury is emphasized through 4.3 metre high vaulted ceilings. To define the change in zones from the dining/cooking area to the living area, Andrew and Marg opted for a large bulkhead. On top of this, the pair opted for ceilings with different cornices, something a little more special to them with a touch of their personality. The style/ambience of the home is created around ‘comfortable living’, with nothing too outrageous. “This is what we wanted and designed, it’s also designed for the future,” said Andrew. “If we become impaired or restricted in movement the house is big enough and the doors wide enough for wheelchair access even the bathroom is designed for wheelchair accessibility into the future.”

HOME IDEAS “Secret his and her’s house” cushions, artwork and lamp shades, as she likes to have a feature colour. “The main inspiration for our colour choice came from these beautiful teal doors from India that we bought in Byron Bay,” said Marg. “These doors define the entrance to our home and that colour is continued in the open living space.” Another design element of the home is that the laundry isn’t in the house, but in the garage. “It’s designed that for when you come back from shopping or doing laundry, you can sort it all out there and come back into the house with what you need,” said Andrew. “People don’t even realise we haven’t got a laundry in our home.” Andrew and Marg both agreed that they couldn’t be happier with how building their own home has gone, from the design stage to the building stage to finally being able to live in their forever home. “Nesci Builders have been very accommodating to our needs and have produced a house that has exceeded our expectations,” said Andrew. “All with the help of Carpet Court and Nathan Kubisch (Marg’s son) from Beyond Paving and Landscaping.”

Marg and Andrew describe their home as a two bedroom house with an office, however could easily be turned into a three bedroom house. The left wing of the home features a bedroom, the office (or TV room to Andrew), a small library in the corridor, a linen cupboard and wet area/bathroom. In contrast, the right wing features an ‘art studio’ in the corridor for Marg, walk- in robe, bedroom and wet area/ bathroom. Andrew and Marg joked that this is their ‘secret his and her’s house’. One of the key things with the design of the home was that Andrew and Marg didn’t want small rooms, with each room designed around a 5 x 5 metre square. The home is smaller than their previous homes, but features bigger rooms to give the sense of space and luxury. In terms of colour scheme, Andrew laughed and said, “Marg was in charge of that.” Marg based the colour scheme of the home around muted greys and cool tones, as the pair aren’t into browns or woods grains etc. However, in the living/ dining/kitchen space, Marg has implemented teal coloured features such as

Complete own ecosystem

The dining room is brought to life with an artwork.

This house isn’t just beautiful, but also incredibly eco-friendly and energy/water efficient. Andrew and Marg have created a home that is completely powered by the sun and solar panels. “There’s a system in one of our sheds which generates all our power,” said Andrew. “The solar panels are not fitted to the home because we didn’t want visibility of the whole system and to distract from the scenery surrounding our home.” The solar system stores excess power in the battery bank to power the house at night. Andrew laughed and said, “Power generation is meeting power consumption at the moment, damn clouds! But when the sun comes out we will have way too much power.” Andrew and Marg joke that when Nuriootpa has a black out, they will be the house on the hill with all the lights on. They have also ensured each globe in their home is LED, to ensure they’re using the least energy possible. Andrew added that 8 LED downlights in the open plan area are equivalent to one normal incandescent light globe. In summer, the pair joked that they can run air conditioners all day long without worrying about paying the electricity bill. On top of their energy self sufficiency, this home is also water self sufficient. A series of tanks around the property collect all rainwater, with the pair already having 200,000L ready for summer. “Everything we work with is rainwater and it’s delivered straight to our house,” said Andrew. In terms of energy efficiency, the pair have introduced a highly efficient hot water system and heat pumps, with the whole house run on electricity from solar panels and batteries, there is no gas. With all this said, Andrew believes the home doesn’t lend itself to perfect energy efficiency. “In theory the home should be flipped the other way, but because of the layout

of the land we couldn’t afford to do that,” he said. “Hence why there is so much glass on the northern side of the home.” Andrew is incredibly passionate about the land and his vineyard. Using biodynamic and organic practices means he is increasing the soil’s fertility with minimal inputs. His goal is to create the lowest footprint on the earth. “This home helps me express what I love to do and am passionate about,” he said. Andrew adopted a philosophy for managing his property called ‘Natural Sequence Farming’, a farming technique developed by Peter Andrews. This technique consists of three basic factors which control the landscape - the green surface area, hydrology and the daily water cycle. Andrew said that at first glance it may not seem like all three factors are directly connected, but believes they all operate in an irrelated sequence of processes, and it is this sequence of farming that the name ‘Natural Sequence Farming’ is based on. Andrew and Marg worked together when designing the garden, which includes 80 plus ornamental trees and 60 fruit trees scattered through the property. The Kassebaum/Kubish (KnK) home is really thought out, with the pair coming up with their own ideas (and sometimes using other people’s expertise) to create a unique, spacious home to grow old in. Andrew believes that they built their ideas until a point where he was comfortable, especially with the solar, as although the technology is simple, it’s a lot of stuff going on in one box, (which he calls the ‘magic box’). “That’s the benefit of building your own home,” said Andrew. “You can design it how you want, add your own solar system and everything and make it as eco-friendly as possible. “Here, we are basically our complete own ecosystem.”

w e n g n i t i Exc s e i r r e b w stra Let’s ask Erica... Have your gardening questions answered by Barossa Nursery, Barossa Valley Way, Nuriootpa. Dear Erica, I had two lawns planted last year. One lawn is very good, but the other doesn’t look as good, has bare patches and there are birds pecking at it all the time. Is it Lawn Beetles? How can I make the lawn healthy again? Kylie C.

Answer: It is still very early for lawn beetle damage to occur, but spraying is warranted with the above conditions, using a Confidor hose-on for lawns. A few days after applying Confidor, you can use a Seasol hose-on for lawns. Seasol is a plant medicine which contains growth hormones for roots which will help repair any root damage and encourage new root growth, making your lawn green and healthy. Erica.

Dear Erica, The lemon tree leaves are yellow and veined and curling. It has been well watered. Does it need fertilising and if so, what is the best? Sam R.

Answer: Your citrus certainly needs feeding. In cold weather, citrus are unable to take up nutrients and by the end of winter, can be quite yellow. The leaves curling indicates stress. Fertilise with Dynamic Lifter for fruit, which will soon green up the leaves, A dose or two of Seasol will de-stress your citrus. Citrus should be fed twice a year with a food for Citrus, in August and January and at Barossa Nursery we find Yates Dynamic Lifter for fruit the best. Because citrus are very hungry plants, you can empty any little bits of fertiliser on them in addition, ie. if there is a little bit of Blood and Bone left in a bag or if you have a bit of Thrive or Seasol solution in a watering can, put it on your citrus. Erica. Dear Erica, Several of my Grevilleas are really yellow, especially the “Robyn Gordon”. I have used Native Ferticote which has made little difference. What next can be done? Marty P.

HOME IDEAS Three old strawberry varieties have been recently released into Australia, coming from Holland and being in quarantine for over five years. The first is Pineberry which has white skin and flesh with contrasting red seeds. They look amazing and would look great on a cheese platter. The initial taste has a pineapple tang, finished by sweet strawberry taste. Pineberry requires cross pollination with other strawberries including Hokowase, Alinta and Kamu. Also requiring cross pollination is the Strasberry, a raspberry flavoured strawberry. This yummy strawberry also has the bumpy appearance of a ripe red raspberry. The third new release strawberry is a Bubbleberry which is an heirloom variety mentioned Jane Austen’s novel, “Emma”. A pretty, pink variety, this strawberry has a bubblegum flavour, much loved by all. Bubbleberry can be eaten fresh or as a dessert with ice cream and makes beautiful jam. These fantastic new varieties are all available at Barossa Nursery. There is a huge range of other berries available at Barossa Nursery now, including Raspberries, Blackberries, Boysenberries, Loganberries, Silvanberries and Gooseberries. Quondongs, an Australian native fruit, rarely available, are now at Barossa Nursery. Erica’s cousins have a large Quondong plantation and have extensively researched the best varieties and have kindly supplied the nursery with very healthy plants. Quondongs are a parasite plant, which can be planted with an Australian native ground cover like Myoporum, or they will search out another host, with no detriment to either. Quondong Pie with a sweet pastry base, intense flavoured Quondong filling, topped with Streusel, served with cream and ice cream, is

absolutely delicious. Barossa Nursery are delighted to welcome back Kristee, daughter of Kevin and Erica. She will assist Daniel in a managerial position and is already introducing improvements and changes to the award winning nursery. A massive shipment of beautiful flowering natives have arrived at Barossa

Nursery, followed by top quality flowering exotic plants and shrubs. New giftware is flowering in from the Melbourne Gift Fair, so Barossa Nursery is really looking fantastic, filled with gorgeous things, so hurry down and check it all out, as you select your new season’s tomatoes and summer vegetables. See you soon!

Answer: Your soil is probably quite Alkaline and at high pH, nutrients become ‘bound up’ and unavailable to the plant, causing it to go yellow. Still apply Native Ferticote this spring, but also apply Sulphate of Iron which will help acidify the soil and green up the leaves. A well-known Grevillea expert always recommends using Sulphate of Iron on Grevilleas. Erica.

Whether it be headphones, soundbars or surround sound speakers, no matter what you get, you’ll be “blown away” by Bose, according to Betta Electrical manager, Richard Inswood. The range of bluetooth speakers will have you enjoying great sounding music, wherever life takes you. “Take it fishing, camping, take it to the garden or in the kitchen - it just makes you smile. “Whatever you buy, the sound is impeccable and it really is just the best quality. You’ll never have any problems with Bose, ever - pay good money, once. “Anyone who buys Bose, whether it is for a Christmas present or for yourself, will feel completely loved and spoilt!”

2 4

“Summer bodies are built in Winter...and Spring!” says Richard. The Ninja Slim is “super cheap” having been marked down from $89.95 to $52 and “can blitz anything” while still being easy to use and clean. “Do you yourself a fruit smoothie, put some yoghurt in there or whatever - you can drink it and feel it doing you good. “Of an evening, if you want to be a bit naughty, put your ice in, your fruit and whack some vodka in and all of a sudden you are smiling again!”

3

Get ready for the AFL Grand Final with the Hisense ULED 65 inch television. Richard says, “It is just amazing value. It’s not OLED, it’s ULED, which is the latest technology but it’s not expensive technology. “It just delivers a cracker of a screen, whether you are watching general TV, sport or your blue ray.”

Cook like Heston Blumenthal with the Everdure gas start charcoal barbecue. “You can smoke, rotisserie, you can do your bangas and you get that beautiful charcoal flavour through,” Richard says. “I have a charcoal cooker exactly like this one at home, with a rotisserie and you feel like you are a Masterchef. You can put on a couple of chooks, with a glass of red wine or a beer in hand, it’s just magnificent!” Available in a range of options, the optional pizza stone and other accessories will have you cooking like a professional in no time.

5

Spring clean with the Electrolux Ergorapido 18 volt cordless hand held vacuum cleaner . “At $199, a saving of $100, it’s terrific value for money,” says Richard. “High quality and easy to use, it’s nice and light with an incorporated hand vac that you can use in the car or boat.”

Daryl Sherwood from Truro Agencies said, “Everything grows with water and rain, you want things to be done quick and easy, so you just have to pick the right product to do the right application.” Gardens can become unruly during the wet season, since its harder to put some gloves on and battle it out with the elements. foliage littering the yard. Truro Agencies has a large product range to fit the needs of their customers. Spring is in the air It has been said a cluttered space creates cluttered minds and prevents us from seeing anything as clearly as we could. De-cluttering is the first task to undertake. A thorough cleanout also helps clear your mind and makes it easier to focus on more important things. Having clear guidelines makes it easier. The general rule though is start at the top and work down. The wardrobes are rewarding spaces

to work on for every member of the family. It is often said we work on the 80:20 rule for most areas of our life. In the case of our wardrobe, 80% of the time we wear 20% of our clothes. Now is the time to review the contents and weed out the worn out, wrong size, bad choice and no longer relevant. Light fittings, air-conditioning vents and ceiling fans are the first things to tackle, followed by brushing the cornices to get rid of cobwebs. Next light switches, power points, mirrors, pictures and lamps need to be dusted or wiped over. When they are done, damp dust or polish the furniture. The kitchen and bathrooms are next. Empty the cupboards

DR12410

It is time to throw open the windows, let in the fresh air and blow away the gloom of winter. Now is the time to reorganise, clean and polish your home ready for the warm weather. While you’ll need to do each room of the house do not try to do it all in one day. Tackle a room at a time and do it properly. Over-enthusiasm can lead to a sense of failure as your energy levels plummet, tasks become too much and you are left with a mess.

and purge old and out-of-date items. Get rid of anything less than fabulous. Be ruthless and make space for more beautiful or useful things. The right tools make it easier to get into all the nooks and crannies so invest in effective products, grout brushes, good sponges and microfiber cloths to leave everything shining. Your vacuum cleaner is a very useful tool for more than just vacuuming the floor. You can use the tools which come with it to clean a number of different surfaces. The brush will clean skirting boards, the upholstery accessory is great on curtains and furniture and the nozzle for getting into narrow spaces. After thorough vacuuming of all floors, mopping is the final job.

The last big thing is window cleaning, a most rewarding task when done properly. Screens should be removed and brushed and the window tracks brushed and vacuumed clean. You will have to lift out sliding windows in order to remove the screens. Very hot water with a dash of dishwashing liquid and a generous amount of white vinegar or methylated spirits cleans the glass well. The detergent helps the squeegee move smoothly across the glass and the vinegar or methylated spirits helps it dry without streaking. All that is needed is a final polish with a microfiber cloth. Congratulations! Now you can greet the change of season with a terrific sense of accomplishment.

Treating a growing problem Jason Stansborough, Grout Pro, Gawler, believes Spring is one of the best times to re-grout your tiles since this is the season where people are inviting guests over to entertain and no one likes to look at a mouldy bathroom. Getting rid of nasty black mould can be difficult, especially if it has been growing in places for a long time without being treated. With three years of experience under his belt, Jason is able to apply his skills to both residential and commercial jobs to get rid of pesky grout problems. Jason said, “As people look around their home, they might come into contact with things like black mould, it might be particularly present in a

choose to go back to the colours of when the house was built. Choices on how to refresh your home this spring may seem endless. But Craig recommends that keeping up with the ‘latest fashions’ doesn’t work for everyone and to refresh your home as you, as a owner, likes.

Craig Marston, painter and decorator. BA19601-V2

BLD 196640

Tanunda painter and decorator, Craig Marston, believes spring is the best time of year for refreshing your home. “Paint can completely refresh and transform a home, and spring is the perfect time as the weather is always getting better,” said Craig, who has 30 year’s experience in the industry. To Craig, this season’s trends are painting over tiles or woodwork, and painting over roofs. He believes that many people are opting for painting over tiles and woodwork, rather than completely replacing them. “It’s definitely cheaper but it’s just another option,” said Craig. “Lot’s of people are painting over their roofs which adds a new dynamic to their homes.” In terms of colours for the upcoming season, Craig believes that neutrals, greys, white and black are still the ‘go to colours’ and very popular in homes around the region. However, Craig explained that bright feature walls are also a ‘big hit’ this season. “We’ve painted one recently in aqua blue and one in light green,” he said. “They just add a new, fresh pop of colour to homes, whether it’s indoors or outdoors.” Craig believes feature walls are cheap to put on and cheap to remove - that’s why they’re great. By using colour cards to help choose an initial colour range, Craig has the ability to mix sample pots on site and, after painting the colour on the wall, owners can see how the colour works in their home, with their furniture and natural lighting. To Craig, it all comes down to working with the customer with what suits their home, the era of the house and what furniture/carpets etc. the owner has. Craig insists all home owners to look at the style of their home when choosing colours. For a modern home, he said the colours on trend are off whites and brown or grey hues. However with an old bungalow style home, the colour scheme will be a lot different, where home owners may

It’s a long way to the top with Barossa Roofing Phil and Ben Slotegraaf, the father and son duo of Barossa Roofing are providing the region with a traditional way to re-roof their homes. Phil has been roofing for over 20 years, and introduced his son Ben into the trade over 12 years ago. The pair are specialists in re-roofing, fitting new roofs to houses, and the fitting of concave, bullnose and convex verandahs. Together they have adopted the traditional style of re-roofing homes, where they do things the old way. Such as, chasing flashings into walls and chimneys and the old hand scribing of ridge capping.

“This is recommended in fire zone areas as it reduces fire embers from getting into the ceiling and dust into the ceiling cavity,” said Phil. We have re-roofed buildings as old as 1840, which include churches, high pitched log cabins, farm sheds, cottages, shopping centres and new homes. They can also fit insulation while in the process of re-roofing, such as sisalation, blanket wool or ceiling batts. Phil and Ben also replace any old and damaged timbers, if the job requires it. “We also convert homes from aluminium and ceramic tiles to corrugated iron,” said Phil. Gutters can come in a continuous length, from

mitre to mitre and there are many profiles to choose from, including half round, ‘OG’, ‘D’ and Fascia gutter. With Phil’s many years of roofing experience he has been able to try numerous different styles of corrugated iron, through different roll formers. Phil is confident he has found a corrugated iron, named ‘True Oak,’ that is by far the leading cgi (corrugated iron) on the market. He explains that True Oak’s deep profile is 5mm deeper than other corrugated irons. “This makes the sheet much stronger and less prone to denting and puckering,” he said. “The machine that rolls this is a one-off and

the closest you can get to the profiles of real, traditional, high strength of yesteryear.” Our roofing finishes come in galvanised, Colorbond and zincalume, and all the materials are from BlueScope Australian made steel. Barossa Roofing is fully equipped with mobile and fixed scaffolding, and has a ladder for almost every job, including churches or 45 degree pitched roofs. They can travel almost state wide and have been to places in the Riverland, Ceduna, Port Augusta, as far south as Mount Gambier and as far north as Darwin, where Ben spent two years fitting roofs to cyclone standards.

An example of Barossa Roofing’s work on a home in Angaston.
