Anthony Semmler - Manager, Office National.

What do you enjoy most about your position? I like meetings, or more appropriately, brainstorming sessions with my most experienced staff to help improve our business. I get the most value from these people that are at the coalface in their particular areas of business. What were you doing before you had the manager’s role? Working my way up in the business. As the eldest son in a family owned business it was inevitable that I would one day be holding the reins. My role has been

ü Ocean Cruising ü Flight Bookings ü Hotel Reservations ü Rail Journeys ü Car Rental ü Travelex Cash Card

Share with us something people may not know about you? I have travelled to 23 countries and have a 1 year old baby boy named Rupert.

Office National

How did you come into the manager’s role and how long have you held this position? I’m one of the sons of the owners of the business. But I started ticking off incoming stock in the warehouse about 15 years ago and worked my way up in the business from there. We have a succession plan in our business as Mum and Dad transition to retirement so my management role has been one of gradual evolution. Describe your role? Very varied. Our business is not small but also not large enough to have a full time manager that only ‘manages’. I have a very hands on role like everyone else here and that is, if there’s a job to be done, customers to serve etc, then it’s all hands on deck.

geared towards this succession over a number of years now. What’s your memorable moment as manager? It’s likely to be what my team and I are experiencing at the moment - implementing a new computer system. Not all these memories will be remembered as happy ones but ultimately it will put us in a better place for us and our customers. I’m sure one day I will look back on it with a smile on my face, long after the pain has subsided! Share with us something people may not know about you? I have a very local surname but my wife and I only moved into the Barossa about 15 years ago with my parents and brother and sister moving in only about 25 years ago. Dad’s parents (my grandparents) left the Valley to live in Adelaide when they were quite young around the outbreak of the second World War. So my wife and I and my parents and brother and sister were born and bred in Adelaide. We’re not true locals but with our surname we bluff our way through! Do you have a secret passion or interest for something? I enjoy cooking. I don’t get enough time to dedicate to it at the moment but I hope to in the future. I’m not very ‘technical’, I love cooking shows where they explain techniques of cooking and would like to attend cooking classes to learn these tricks of the trade.

Graetz Irrigation Pty Ltd How did you come into the manager’s role and how long have you held this position? The business was started by my parents and I in 1977. It was started to supplement the income from my parents’ vineyard and market gardening enterprise. I have managed the irrigation business since its inception. Describe your role? Being a small business owner, the role of manager is quite varied. I manage the business as a whole, but I spend a lot of my time designing and quoting the irrigation systems. I project manage the jobs we win and help with some of the smaller field jobs if required. I also assist with the retail sales as necessary. What do you enjoy most about your position? The most enjoyable part of my job is having satisfied clients, being involved with their projects from conception through to operation, no matter how small or large the project is. What were you doing before you had the manager’s role? Prior to leaving school, I worked at a petrol station serving fuel. After leaving school, I worked for my father in his vineyard and market garden. What’s your memorable moment as manager? That’s too difficult to identify. There have been many memorable moments throughout my career, and hopefully there will be many more. Share with us something people may not know about you? This is something that the younger generations may not be able to relate to, but I still enjoy my work, even after nearly 37 years. Do you have a secret passion or interest for something? Yes most definitely, I would love to get 4 weeks holiday, sick pay, overtime and long service leave. LOL.
