A very large percentage of Australian native plants flower in September and Barossa Nursery has a range in stock, flowering gloriously, so it is a very good time to come in and select which plants you like the very best. Here is a selection of some of the best. Grevilleas are a huge diverse genus which absolutely thrive in the Barossa. Smothered with flowers now are Grevillea lavandulacea ‘Tanunda form’, Grevillea ‘Winter Wonder’, Grevillea ‘Scarlet Sprite’, Grevillea ‘Mallee Cherie’ and the yellow flowering Grevillea Synaphae, as well as many other varieties. Also flowering now in the same proteaceae family are Isopogons with their purple candycone or yellow drumstick flowers. In the myrtle family, Thryptomenes, Baeckias and Asforteas are in full flower covered in dainty white, pink or purple flowers. These are long flowering and ideal for floral work. Many people are asking, “What is that beautiful perfume?” and it is Boronias. Full of bell or starry flowers, Boronias come in colours of yellow, brown, purple, pink and white. Many Correas (native fuchsias) and Croweas with

Dear Erica, I bought seven bare-root roses this year and six have produced leaves and are growing, but the seventh, whilst still green, has not produced any leaves. The soil is good as we worked through Complete D, Complete Mineral Mix and aged cow manure. The rose has a main stem and a small side stem, which has die-back. Maria G. Answer: It is not a good idea to work fertiliser through the soil for any bare-root plant and Complete D and Complete Mineral Mix are amongst the harsher fertilisers (organic fertilisers are much gentler). The six shooting roses probably had no fertiliser touching the roots, but this seventh rose may just have had a little lump of fertiliser touching its roots, which can cause the rose roots to burn and set the plant back. At this point, cut the side branch past the dieback with clean, sharp secateurs and fertilise two or three times with a Seasol solution, weekly, then decreasing the frequency to fortnightly. As the weather warms up, in combination with the Seasol, your rose should shoot. Another benefit of using Seasol regularly is that when your rose does shoot, the fungal disease Black Spot, will be dramatically diminished. Erica. Dear Erica, Our Stella cherry tree is growing too tall. Can we prune it back? Will that affect the cherry production? Lyell T. Answer: You certainly can prune cherry trees back, but you may be better to wait till next year, pruning in June or July. As it warms up, the sap will start flowing and a major prune can cause the tree to ‘bleed’ gum, ie cause gummosis. Many people ‘pollard’ their trees, cutting out the central leader and the tree tends to grow out, rather than up, making fruit picking much easier. Erica. Dear Erica, Our lemon tree turned quite yellow after that big frost. What do we need to do? Jeremy. Answer: Now is the time to feed citrus with a specific citrus food. We find Dynamic Lifter for fruit and citrus will green up your lemon tree quite quickly. Erica.

Epacris, Victoria’s state flower is flowering now in colours of white and pink and quite a few Banksias have flowers. Thomasias with purply paper flowers and Tetrathecas with bright purple flowers are both flowering now, as are Eremophilas, Hardenbergias with their purple pea flowers, Templetonias, Kunzeas, Baveras and Corostylus, to name a few. Come into Barossa Nursery to compare native species and be able to choose your absolute favourite. Barossa Nursery has celebrated their opening and are trading out of their new shop. It is a work in progress and they may be tidying and tweaking things for a good time yet. Staff have been working extremely hard to bring the nursery to this point and special mention to Daniel, who has organised all the plant hardware, Mandy who has set up the giftware and to “Mr Fixit,” Craig, whose handyman talents have contributed to the setting up. Barossa Nursery are happy to introduce Tricia, new staff member, who is involved with customer service, giftware and merchandising. Management and staff are very happy to be in their new shop and extend thanks to all shoppers for their overwhelming support and positive glowing comments. They look forward to seeing you this spring in their fantastic new shop.

Flower power

Bethany Rothe of Viva the Flower Store says that a bunch of beautiful blooms can make a space feel warm and inviting.

dd

There’s nothing quite like the smell and sight of fresh flowers around the home, and now that spring has sprung there is an abundance of floral wonders to choose from. Did you know that there are scientific studies that actually suggest they enhance mood, boost creativity and productivity and produce calming properties? Ms Bethany Rothe, proprietor of Viva the Flower Store in Angaston is surrounded by flowers on a daily basis, and notices how they can instantly enhance a space and increase positive energy in a room. “Flowers give off an incredible aura and an amazing feeling when you walk into the

room. “They can make a space feel so warm and inviting… people just feel comfortable around flowers because they have a natural freshness and delicate fragrance.” When choosing flowers for your home, Bethany says that it’s all about matching them to your décor to create a harmonious, feel-good space. “It also depends on people’s moods… if they’ve just cleaned the house, then a bunch of beautiful flowers just make the space feel amazing,” she says. Now that we are moving into the warmer months, keeping your interior light and bright

is important. “The whites and the greens are trending at the moment. Really neutral and earthy tones for a more natural look give off a sense of space and calm, without competing for attention in the room.” To create the perfect homely ambience, Bethany’s advice is to place flowers in the most common areas such as the kitchen and living room to get the full effect of the beautiful buds. “Don’t forget spaces such as the bathroom or even bedside tables because you do spend a lot of time in these areas… it makes you feel good when you’re getting ready in the bathroom and you have some nice white flowers or some green foliage.” She also has some simple care tips to ensure your flowers stay garden-fresh for longer. “Keeping flowers in clean, fresh water, re-cutting the stems and changing the water are things that work perfectly. “Some people might choose to put in other preservatives such as bleach or sugar also.” To jump into the spring mood, flowers of the moment include sweet peas, hyacinths and tulips. Lilies are also ever popular and there is a chrysanthemum comeback, both flowers also praised for their longevity. So next time you’re feeling blue, fill your space with blooms and feel the flower power make you smile.

spring

To celebrate the change of season, the team at Wohlers decided to use their decorative take on Spring to style this new rustic bedroom package. They worked in three teams of two, made up of one furniture consultant and one homewares consultant. To put a competitive edge on this fun activity, their settings were judged by Wohlers Visual Merchandiser, Angie Low, and other members of the management team.

Julie and Kayla were simply inspired by the colours of Spring. Due to their affective colour use and product placement for this setting, they were deemed the top pick by the judging panel. You step into this room, and it does literally say spring all over….from the colour scheme, to the use of the throw, the season happy prints and the new season’s giftware, it is a clean, vibrant exclamation of that warmer weather we can’t wait to welcome.

TEAM 1: Julie Houghton & Kayla Graetz

Manchester set: Logan & Mason’s Marrakesh - Coral

Tracey and Martin took to the task with a bold and beautiful attitude. They selected the feminine, stand-out shade of purple to be their Spring hero, and supported it with a crisp white touch. Purple is known for its association with royalty and, using it in your lifestyle symbolizes power, nobility, luxury and ambition. The colour has also been known to convey wisdom, independence, creativity and magic. The quilt cover pattern and the detail of the lead light lamps further add to that strong, womanly essence. For all lovers of a bold colour statement, this is the look for your new seasons bedroom make over! Manchester set: Logan & Mason’s Tasman Jacaranda

TEAM 2: Tracey Miles & Martin Ludwig

James and Mikhaela were inspired by the idea of the perfect get away to a Bed & Breakfast in Springtime. They went with a neutral canvas and then effectively livened it up with a hint of soft colour here and there. Selecting from Wohlers new season’s Rapee cushion range, gave them stimulation to tie in the green hat stand, the contents of the breakfast tray and the decorative tall boy display. Simply spring with an energized tone of colours you love.

Spring They call her the “paint lady”. She’s the one customers at Nuriootpa’s Juncken Home Timber and Hardware go to when paint comes to mind. Helen Sellars has 12 years’ experience in the hardware industry and has developed a talent for “eye matching” every colour in the spectrum. With Spring in the air, she said it’s time to spruce-up your home with a lick of paint that will not only give a refreshing new look, but also help to chase out the winter blues. “Different colours evoke different moods,” said Helen. And with thousands of colours available through the

Home Ideas 2015

new Valspar paint range, home owners can be as moody as they like! Helen has chosen a selection of Spring inspired shades that will help you on your way to discovering the perfect hue and suggests the first step to choosing colours is to discount all those you don’t like first. “It’s always good to take a lot of colour chips home and try them first. The more samples you have, the better idea you will get and it’s a good way of trying something you wouldn’t normally pick without having to commit,” Helen said.

Helen’s paint picks

“Once you’ve narrowed your choices down, sample pots are definitely the way to go to make sure you are happy with that colour in your room.” “Valspar also have a colour visualiser on their website so you can take photos of your room, upload them and then ‘paint’ them without even lifting a paintbrush.” The Valspar brand also offers a unique “love your colour guarantee”. “We can give you more advice on how that works in store.”

Helen shares her thoughts on this season’s favourite colours and how they can change the mood of a room.

Greys are neutral, calming and quiet. If you have lots of light, a dark colour is nice for a feature wall. It’s a neutral, cool colour . A lot of people are picking greys at the moment, it seems to be the most popular thing because they’ve seen it on television renovations shows. Having a dark grey feature wall at the end of a room will bring that wall in closer. So, if you have a very small room, perhaps don’t choose a dark feature wall - it’ll make it look smaller.

There are probably a couple hundred different versions of pinks and purples at least. Some people like colours from this spectrum in bedrooms because they are relaxing, calming and very soothing. It is for those who are a bit adventurous and like colour. Maybe it’s a good choice as a feature wall rather than the entire room. That way if you change your mind in a couple of years time, you only need to re-paint one wall.

Flight of Fancy and Murray Mint Greens and the bluey greens they can add a nice tropical touch and are relaxing, calming and restful colours. There are so many shades of green, from bluey greens to traditional greens, minty greens... it’s endless. It’s always a good idea to take home colour chips and see how they look at home.

Red Head and Crushed Cumin They are the warm colours. Anything in the red, orange and brown tonings give your rooms a warm feel, especially when it’s freezing cold outside! They are stimulating and dynamic colours that add energy and intensity to your room and evoke passion and romance. A lot of people have been choosing the darker reds for feature rooms in bedrooms and using neutral colours for their remaining rooms. Also, people will just paint their chimney breast in a certain colour. It’s easy to change that every season with just a litre of paint which is really just as cheap as buying a bunch of flowers.

Choco Spice and Ball of Twine The neutral tones are great for people who perhaps aren’t as adventurous with colour. They never seem to date and it’s easy to accessorise with neutral colour schemes. If you are painting a home to sell, neutral colours are the way to go because when people look around, they can visualise their own furniture in the house; whereas if you have bold colours everywhere, they would be thinking they have to repaint before moving in. Neutral colours are good because they go with everything. You can change the look of your room just by the cushions and the accessories you use rather than repainting which is more time consuming.

Bringing entertainment outside for Spring Barossa Pergola & Outdoor Concepts of Tanunda are going from strength to strength with the high demand for their quality pergolas keeping them busy. John and Scott Hudson, owners of the local business, said, “A pergola is perfect for all year round but when the sun begins to come out in Spring, people begin to think about being or entertaining outside. “A pergola is an easy way to create an extra outdoor room and the modern lifestyle is now more entertaining.” John says that a pergola can be as simple or as elaborate as the client wants. They work closely with their customers to create and plan the design, and add those extra details to make the pergola fit to everyone’s lifestyle. A pergola can add visual impact to any home, add an additional living space and increase property value. With over 30 years’ experience in the field,

John has developed features and services that he provides to his clients. These include SolarSpan insulated roofing, SunTuff solar control, ziptrack blinds to keep wind and rain out, decorative screening, decking around pools, swim spas and spas, polycarbonate roofing and much more. The different materials that Barossa Pergolas supply allow for continuous use with their outdoor heating, whether electric, gas or wood for the winter or evaporative cooling for the hotter seasons, transforming the humble pergola into an outside, year round, entertainment area. Scott said, “A pergola is a cost effective approach to extending your existing living areas. Because of the nature of the materials available now, we are able to make your outdoor area into a more liveable part of your home. “Our team is there from the beginning to the end of the project.”

Building a view

Julie and Craig Parks, Eden Valley, on their new pergola built by Barossa Pergola and Outdoor Concepts in July.

Julie and Craig Parks, Eden Valley, are happy with their newly finished deck from Barossa Pergola & Outdoor Concepts. The couple wanted to make a larger space for themselves outside to enjoy the stunning views around their home. The house is situated on a back road of Eden Valley where they are surrounded by tumbling green hills and vibrant vegetation. “We originally had a small pergola, which was on the house when we bought it. But we thought that was it, we need something bigger,” said Julie. “So we have it around the house, which gave us a couple more areas to sit. It was just to give us more space and to replace the old dilapidated one that we had.”

Julie was impressed with the service, saying that the deck was built in July and the builders did a good job at getting it constructed quickly and efficiently. Julie and Craig enjoy the extra space and new addition to their house, which is ready for Spring and Summer entertainment. “It gives us more space and we can utilise the view that we have. It’s beautiful here on the side of the house. You get a beautiful breeze. So it’s nice to sit somewhere now,” said Julie. Currently, the Parks family are fixing up the outside of the house with the deck just the beginning to their home renovations.

Home Ideas 2015

By Meg Bielby Now that the weather is improving, it’s a good time to get some of the outside DIY jobs done,” said Mr Ian Bielby of Tanunda, keen DIY dad. Home improvements are becoming increasingly popular

with plenty of inspiration and information at our fingertips. But not only is it enjoyable, it’s also a great way to save money. A basic toolbox should include items such as screwdrivers, hammer, pliers, wrench, tape measure, spirit level, utility knife, torch, electric drill and saw.

But as Ian says, “With renovation comes responsibility,” as doing your own DIY can be dangerous if the right precautions are not taken. Protective equipment like safety glasses, ear protectors, dust masks, enclosed footwear, and sometimes even a safety helmet are a must. To ensure that you are working in a safe environment, it’s important to check electrical equipment on a regular basis. A qualified tradesman should be hired for any electrical work, as there can be dangerous consequences carrying out your own electrical work. In fact, recent research by Ausgrid Energy has shown that around one in four people would not call out an electrician for tasks such as relocating power points, installing ceiling fans or replacing light fittings.

Ian’s five home renovation ideas for Spring:

• Painting. • Cleaning out the gutters to get rid of all the leaves and plant debris that have accumulated over the autumn and winter months. • Repairing timber structures such as outdoor pergolas in time for alfresco dining in the warm weather. • Laying down paving. • Building a raised garden bed to plant delicious summer fruits and vegetables. So now that the warmer months are approaching, it’s the perfect time to pop your safety glasses on, grab your hammer and repair that fence that you’ve been meaning to do for years.

Left: Always ensure that you are wearing the correct safety gear when working on your DIY project.
