GAME ON!

President’s Message Welcome to all sponsors, volunteers, officials and players to the start of the 2015 Barossa Light and Gawler Football Assn. football season.   This year promises to again be a fantastic season in all grades.   Welcomed to the running of the Association are new Directors, Paul Little and Wally Hearn who bring a wealth of experience to the table.   We also welcome the new Junior Football Officer, Saxon Dswonitzky and Junior President, Richard Sibley.   Thanks to last year’s presidents, Rick Pearson and Len Warren for their help and Len has now stepped down from the Board, but will stay involved as a tribunal commissioner.   The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Carl Whitaker will again be the BLGFA Umpires’ Coach in 2015.

Football

Carl is in charge of the best country umpires panel in community football and we are indeed fortunate to have such a dedicated group that cover all grades from Under 9’s through to A-Grade level each week.   In charge of our junior umpires again this year is Sarah Jameson and I am sure Sarah will do a great job as she keeps passing on her great knowledge of umpiring to our up and coming men in white.   I appeal to all players and supporters of football in the BL&G to respect the umpires as they go about their thankless task every Saturday.   This year the BLGFA will compete in the SA Country Championships as part of the Central Zone at Port Augusta on July 4-5.   The BLGFA have been in the Eastern Zone since 2009 but have now rejoined the Central Zone which they were last associated with in 2006.   I would encourage all players to make themselves available for selection in the team as it is an opportunity to play against the best players from across all country leagues and associations.   It is particularly pleasing to see so many BL&G players representing Central

District in all grades at SANFL level and it demonstrates that the BL&G’s junior programme is going from strength to strength, especially with some players currently playing AFL.   The issue of drugs in sport has been a headline over the past few years and while it would be unwise to say the BLGFA does not have players using performance enhancing and recreational drugs, the Board of Directors is confident it would only be a small percentage of players, if any!   Any player found to be using any form of drugs will be dealt with swiftly and have severe penalties imposed on them.   I extend the Board’s thanks to the countless volunteers that give many hours of their free time each year to ensure that their clubs continue to grow and prosper.   However, the season will start on a sad note with the recent sudden passing of promising Barossa District junior, fourteen year old Ike Zerk, from a heart condition.   Good luck to all football and netball teams for season 2015. Mick Brien,  President, BL&G Football Association

Newly appointed BL&GFA president, Mick Brien is looking forward to the 2015 season.

Gawler Central aim to take back to back flags Damien Herzick and Clint Hill will lead Gawler Central A grade in the 2015 season with the challenge set for the club to go back to back in the A grade and Reserves. Clint continues to show leadership worth on the track, taking most of the pre-season fitness and according to club officials, no one can question his on field leadership and hardness within the association. Winning three of the four flags last year, the club is keen to improve and win all four

premiership flags - a task they admit is huge. The goal is to promote many of their under 21 players who will be adequately mentored by club stalwarts Aaron King, Jake Asher, Shane Souter and the return of Kirk Heberle. Brad Mercer looks very fit and will work hard to kick 100 goals this season after a knee injury last year hindered his chances. Jason Blakemore will continue to push his skills on the field and looks likely to fill the gap left from Daniel Stanley’s departure.

Young players Brad Hunt, Luke Edwards, Kyle Wurst and Dylan Bell are also looking to take the next step within the team. Off the field, Rod Knight will lead the club as president for his third term and some extra interest from others within the club will help to spread the load. Installing the first set of lights in the Association, Gawler Central are excited to have locked in a night game derby with the other Tigers - Nuriootpa, in round two.

They are keen to secure another night game during the year to make the most of the new addition. With the ability to use the new greyhound clubhouse, the club is excited to deliver spectators the best place to watch football this season rain or shine. They have also taken over the former administration building and will work hard to bring it up to the standard now set by the new dog’s clubhouse.

Football The Barossa, Light and Gawler Football Association will trial an order off rule this season which could lead to a player or official receiving a two match suspension. Association president, Mick Brien said the order off rule and changes to the red and yellow card system will be a trial period for one year to help stop repeat offenders. “It will keep the game clean and in order and stop the repeat offenders,” said Mick. Mick added the change makes players and officials more accountable and if they were to receive two yellow cards they know they are walking a fine line.

From the first round, a player or official who receives a red card shall not take any further part in the game and cannot be replaced by another player or official until a period of 10 minutes has elapsed. Also, a player or official who receives a yellow card shall not take any further part in the game for 10 minutes and they may be immediately replaced. However, if a player or official is to receive three yellow cards in a playing season they will be given a two match suspension by the Association. It is understood some other leagues have brought in similar rulings. The Association will

assess the change at the end of the season. Barossa, Light and Gawler Umpires’ Association president, Martin Kennedy said he and his umpires were guided by the league but welcomed the change to assist players and officials. “I have seen people with a number of yellow cards over the years and perhaps the system may have improved the way they play in the season,” said Martin. Mick indicated there could be another change in the way of reporting players before the season starts on April 11, but this will be discussed at the next association meeting.

Tanunda will look at a total team structure as they bounce back from not playing finals football in 2014. With the departure of Benjamin Newberry, Matthew Westhoff, Matthias Grocke and Jason Baylis, the club has recruited heavily in the off season to form a team with, among other players, club stalwarts Thomas Schiller, Nicholas Schmidt and Leigh Westhoff. Recruits include Bradley Moran, Scott Wendelborn, Dale Payne, Samson Marks, Troy Cowland, David Waechter, Jack Arnold and Daniel Ellis. The A grade side will be captained by Nicholas Schmidt, who brings a team focus, unity and high standards. Taking the reigns as coach this season is Craig Griffiths, who brings new ideas, game plan and the desire for a whole club commitment to achieve goals in 2015. Captains in remaining grades are yet to be appointed. Carl Samain will take the role of Reserves coach, Malcolm Greenwood under 17s and Bob Smart, under 15s. Under the leadership of Dan Eggleton, the club is keen to make finals and develop strong club morals. Building on their strong junior development in previous years, the club will continue to foster player development and are encouraged by the good numbers for the junior grades which have a good balance of talent in the squads. Off the field, Tanunda will work hard to promote a family and community based club.

The departure of Brett Woodards (Port Pirie) and Joel Wilson (Crystal Brook) has resulted in a number of new players to Angaston Football Club this season. The A grade side welcome Thomas Flight (Glenunga), Brent Rose (Broken Hill), Tyson Gordon (Walpeup-Underbool), Steve Dekker-Price (Glenunga) and James Parker (Trinity OS) while Andrew Pech is returning after time at Mannum. Long serving players Matthew

Doecke, who has played 392 A grade games and kicked 415 goals remains with the Panthers and is joined by other club stalwarts Beau Byster, Tom Feist, Daniel Rathjen, Brad Brook and Greg Bain. Keith Jamieson takes over from Peter Feist as president. The club’s junior development plan remains the same as previous seasons and under 17 players, if capable, have the opportunity to play A grade if required.

In other club happenings, it appears there could be one less side in the under 9 grade which will be coached by Ashley Ratcliff. The under 13s will be coached by Craig Hadden this year while the under 15s, coached by James Linke and under 17s have low numbers to keep the bench warm. The club is keen to upgrade their clubrooms with new carpet, curtains and fridges and will continue to source avenues for funding to make this happen.

organisation and drive to Freeling as they hope to achieve a “significant improvement” this year. The club is keen to embrace their playing group, recruiting good characters and supporting the junior sides. They are also keen to focus on making football important at Freeling. This can be achieved under the leadership of Dominic Shepley as president, who is in his second

year at the helm. The plan to develop junior involvement continues with the younger grades being very healthy. However, under 17 playing numbers are down. The club’s new pavilion will be ready in time f or round one. While the club are yet to appoint captains, Paul Leske will coach the Reserves; Paul Erskine, under 17s and Shea Hanisch, under 15s.

Looking pleased with their pre-season training efforts so far are Nuriootpa Rover Football Club’s Jordan Robinson, Brett Thiele, Henry Slattery, Mark Rumbelow and Charles Edwards. Tregenza will not line up for the Tigers this season. Chad Barmby has also left. New to the club this year are Henry Slattery, Dylan Ribbons, Brendon Emmanuel and there are a number of players returning to Nuriootpa. This is in addition to a number of club stalwarts who will don the black and yellow in 2015. Chris Linke once again takes on the role to lead the club. Healthy numbers in the junior grades and with coaches in place to develop them into quality footballers - junior development at Nuriootpa is looking good. Tony Linke takes on the role of Reserves coach while Shaun Ribbons will coach under 17s and Alan Norton, under 15s. But the club also have a holistic approach in helping develop them into young adults. Hosting an ANZAC match against Angaston and also the preliminary finals keeps the club busy off the field too.

GAME ON! Football Willaston focus Barossa focuses on on developing youth development younger players Willaston Football Club will focus on fast tracking the development of their younger players as they continue to experience strong numbers in all junior grades. The club has been able to retain most of their senior squad from last year as Steve O’Connor continues as coach and looks forward to developing the up and coming juniors who have graduated to the senior ranks this year. Sammy Walton will captain the A grade side, who, together with Jimmy Jones, Matthew Brooks, Joel Campbell and Steve White, play an important part in the side and the development of the young players. Jamie Williams, Mark McCullum and Michael Howson have left the club

while Brad Tosold and Sean Baker are both injured. New to club are David Alloco, Damian Knight and Jason Collins. Club officials say they have recruited to cover their losses and with the enthusiasm of the young players coming through, it promises to lead to an exciting year. With the current buzz phrase “we won’t set an upper limit”, Willaston aim to make the final four. Max Bornholdt continues as Reserves coach. Gary Watson moves to coach the under 17s, a side which will have a number of team members from under 15s while retaining a half from last year’s side. Tim East will coach the under 15s which will look to consolidate on last year’s effort.

The Stelzer brothers, Paul and Matt in addition to Dean Cutting are noticeable omissions from Barossa District Football Club line-up this year. Long serving players, Adam Spencer, Darren Sharp, Michael Baraglia and Ben Bussel remain with the Doggies and to don the red and blue for the first time are: Chad Spurr, Damon Millar, Jai Kovatseff, Jaydn Goodfellow, Bradley Green, Luke McCracken, Josh Harris and Jordy Earle. Michael Baraglia will capably lead the side this season and is supported by Jai Kovatseff and Hayden Traynor. Roger James continues to bring great leadership and wisdom as their premiership player and coach. The focus for Barossa this season is developing, particularly with their junior

players to be premiership winners and the aim is to mould the future of the club. They have been hit hard by the loss of popular colt team mate, Ike Zerk and the club will do everything to endeavour they support players, club members and the Zerk family. In light of the tragic death of Ike, the juniors have a new passion to excel themselves and to play and train at their optimum in memory of their team mate. The close knit football community will honour Ike’s memory by raising funds for Heart Kids as part of round one on April 11 at Lyndoch. Sandra Zachopoulos is the first female president to take the reigns at Barossa and brings with her a new, youthful, vibrant and stable committee who are passionate on continuing to build the club further.

GAME ON!

Netball President’s Message The Barossa Light and Gawler Netball Association is ready for another competitive year of netball. All nine clubs have recruited well over the season break with clubs promoting within their own ranks and attracting talent from outside of the Association as we see an influx of players from Adelaide, Adelaide Plains and the Gawler District competitions. We anticipate the Senior 1 division will continue to be very strong and set a high standard for netball. Several clubs have new coaches this season so it will be interesting to see which teams will finish in the top four – it may be

a case of the battle of the coaches. Willaston is expected to be the benchmark team again however, other sides have improved their team structures with strong recruiting. The strength of our top sides continue to have a flow on effect to all senior divisions with last year recording an increased standard in the lower senior divisions. The junior divisions have strong numbers this year and most clubs have filled all divisions. Various clubs will also run Net Set Go throughout the year as a fun introductory programme for children not old enough to play. The 17 and under players were showcased on March 20 at Kapunda in the Zorich Group Pre-season Carnival. This was a departure from previous years and everyone enjoyed watching the emerging talent in action and identifying players to play in our June long weekend Country Championships. Netball continues to dominate sport

within our local community. This year we continue to see increased growth in the number of people wanting to play in our Association. This creates the extra burden of finding umpires and volunteers. This year we will continue our focus on umpire development with the assistance of our umpiring panel and we will be looking at recruiting interested people to develop as umpires. Finally, welcome to all our players, officials, and supporters to season 2015. On behalf of the Board of the BLGNA, we hope you have an enjoyable season and don’t forget to have fun. Netball is not only about winning - it’s also about participating, being healthy, and being part of your club and wider community.

Season 2015 at the Willaston Netball Club has started off well with a new Senior One Coach being appointed - Roz Fraser has been secured and the club could not be more excited! Roz has a vast range of experience ranging from coaching Garville Premier League team to working at Netball SA and being heavily involved with the State underage teams. She has so much knowledge and experience and will implement many new things at the club. There is a huge buzz around the club and all the girls are excited and working hard. They have learnt so much already and are looking forward to a fantastic season. Pre-Season was short and sharp, but Scott Ansell and Rob Polito did not let the girls off lightly!

Everyone was worked hard, pushing themselves to their limits and they are all well prepared for the year ahead. The club is looking very healthy again, with full senior teams and the junior teams are expanding every year. Willaston have great coaches in place across the board, with Sue Brown making a return to support the Inter teams, and she is working those girls hard! There are some new Committee members in place and they are busily working away to implement some new and exciting things around the club. The aim is to improve each year across many areas, and there is a big focus on that for Season 2015. Willaston are looking forward to a challenging yet successful season – bring on Round 1!

Good luck to all tea ms in Season 2015!

GAME ON! Barossa District welcome new senior netball coaches

Barossa District Netball Club welcomes Brenton Wittwer as new Senior 1 coach and Kelly Gerschwitz as the Senior 2 coach. There are a few new players to the 1 and 2 senior teams. Emma Holland and Shaleigh Brown from Harlequins; Alex Lang returning to the club after playing juniors; Krystal Childs and Samantha Hartley from the Gawler Association and Nicole Weidenhofer from Lobethal Lutheran in the Hills Courier League. Both coaches and new recruits will bring further experience, knowledge and a fresh outlook to both teams and the club is aiming to have a more successful season this year. All are pleased and excited about the large amount of new players joining the club this year, fitting into line ups from Senior 1’s all the way down to the junior teams. This has given more depth and officials believe it will make Barossa’s teams stronger and more competitive this year. All senior and junior players have been working hard during pre–season and already improvement can be seen throughout all grades and the girls are showing a lot of dedication and determination. The club is very proud of its Senior 3 and 7 sides in making the grand final in 2014 but just falling short of the victory. The loss has given them more fight and determination to finish one better this year. Barossa District aim to have more Barossa teams in the final four this year. The executive committee and committee members are always working hard to make the club a more successful one and competitive too. They are working closely with coaches on junior development to get better results in all junior grades and more importantly to help the senior teams to be more competitive in years to come. Barossa District are a proud club and have united as one even more this year and are looking forward in getting on the court in 2015. Go Doggies!!!

Nuriootpa Netball Club plan year of re-building The Nuriootpa Netball Club looks forward to another year of re-building its senior teams and consolidating on the success of its junior teams last year. “Our Sub-Junior 1’s and 2’s both came away Premiers in 2014 and this has given the girls a new impetus to go for gold again,” said Club President, Tania Materne. Most of these girls have moved up into juniors so a new breed of Subbies aims to achieve just as highly. As a committee, Nuriootpa Netball Club have worked hard to ensure their juniors have the best possible experience for their

netball and this has been challenging over the past three years with the large number of girls Nuriootpa are privileged to have in the club. In 2015, players will see most teams run with eight or nine girls which is ideal and they look forward to the angst of the past years starting to finally pay off. Nuriootpa Netball Club offers all the players and interested parties umpiring courses and coaching courses and encourages them to give it a go. “Often it is only a matter of confidence that when overcome, they realise they can be terrific umpires or coaches.” The club also provides Asthma Care

courses for each team. Seniors, under the guidance of Senior 1 player/coach, Heidi Gogoll, are dedicated to the Nuriootpa Netball Club and while they have been in a re-building phase and not enjoying too many wins on the board, they continue to strengthen and look to the positives. This year each team is hoping to improve on their success and if enthusiasm and dedication count for anything, success will follow. Tania Materne adds, “I know each and every one of our players and officials will do the Nuriootpa Netball Club proud.” Go Tigers!

Angaston Netball Club welcomes players The Angaston Netball Club warmly welcomes both past and new players for the 2015 season and is delighted to be able to field all teams across both junior and senior grades. This season the club is under new leadership with incoming President, Mel Gore taking the reins together with Jane Ryan as Vice. “I am very excited to see what 2015 brings us with the return of many past players and many new players to the club. It’s very exciting to see such growth at Angaston Netball club,” Mel said. The club will continue to draw on the experience and expertise of outgoing President, Natasha Rosenzweig who continues on the committee as coaches’ co-ordinator.

The club welcomes the return of some experienced senior players who will combine well with existing players and the young developing talent, including first year senior players graduating from intermediate last season. Anna Cameron together with Jane Ryan will lead the senior one and two group and the club welcomes both new and returning coaches to senior grades. Pre-season across all grades has been excellent with high numbers attending regular fitness sessions conducted by competent and qualified personal trainer and player, Maddi Kalleske who will continue to provide fitness sessions throughout the season. All teams are settling nicely

ahead of the season opener, and are again aiming for a finals finish. An informative Meet ‘n’ Greet was held in late February for all junior players, coaches and parents. The club welcomes many new players to the club with many playing netball for the first time. The club continues to focus on junior player development, with an umpiring clinic already booked for early in the season. The club is also excited to have Thunderbirds player, Erin Bell conducting a coaching clinic at the club in May. Coach development will again be a focus with some coaches looking to complete NetballSA coaching

The Bomber girls are looking forward to a fun and competitive year. They are pleased that they have been able to fill all of their junior teams for the 2015 season, which is great for a smaller town, knowing that the club has young blood coming through the mix. To support these Juniors, Kapunda Netball Club have started a Junior Development Committee at club level, comprising of some keen parents and committee members. They are hoping that this will enable good communication and allow growth for junior players. The club strives for a united club and this is just another small step to ensure that people feel connected and committed to The Bomber. The committee is currently working on a ‘development booklet for coaches’ - with tips, training ideas and ‘standards’ as to where their current players should be at. For the 2015 season Kapunda Netball Club have been able to fill six senior teams. They are all inspired and pumped for the season ahead, after a first preseason bonding camp, which was held in late March. The club put on a fabulous weekend at West Beach for senior, intermediate and junior players - focusing on fitness and getting to know each other better. It started on the Saturday morning

for a gruelling PT session at the ‘Snake Pit’ and combined lunch, followed by an amazing race around the caravan park. Players stayed at the Adelaide Shores caravan park (bunk style) had a great tea together, shared many stories and laughs before bed, then finished up with a Sunday morning beach session to ‘loosen the legs’. Overall a fantastic weekend - even if the bodies were sore the following days. Coaching the Senior 1’s this year is Penny Chappell and Sarah Johnson. From last year’s runner-up side the team will be missing Kim Creber (due to pregnancy) but look forward to the opportunity to promote some talented players from the Senior 2 Premiership side. Kapunda are also fortunate to have a number of players returning to netball this season (after missing a couple of seasons due to pregnancies, etc.) These players have senior one experience that will add strength to the Senior 2 side, which will have quite a different line up this year. Kapunda are striving for a competitive outfit, with good depth in the squad and therefore plenty of pressure on everyone to perform, to bring success to the teams and club in 2015.

Early training start for Freeling netballers Pre–season for Freeling Netball Club began mid January and the girls have been training consistently ever since. Their dedication to pre–season this year will pay off as players seem fitter and certainly focused for the year ahead. With the welcome return of FNC past premiership coach, Susan O’Brien at the helm, players have a respected coach to bring out the best in them through her strong commitment and dedication to players and the club. This has already been mirrored by the players, who were commended for their commitment and professional approach during pre–season. Again, Deb Meaney has volunteered her time as FNC junior development officer, continuing the strong junior focus. For the first time in many years the

club has welcomed a great number of wonderfully enthusiastic new players, both in the senior and junior grades. This is yet another positive step towards the rebuilding of the club. Spectators and players will definitely reap the rewards this year, due to the dedication and commitment that new and current players have shown towards themselves and their teammates thus far. There is no doubt that there will be significant improvements shown on the court at Freeling this year. Country netball is alive and well at the FNC as the club initiates change to continue to remain competitive, and at the same time, continue to be true to themselves. Toni Oliver, Freeling netball club president, wishes all BL&G clubs every success this season.

Early season start for South Gawler netballers The South Gawler Senior 1 and 2 Group along with the whole club has attacked 2015 with an early start to pre-season and a strong focus on strength as well as aerobic fitness. As the group has been such a competitive outfit over the past few years they have set up to mix some fresh new ideas with the current ideals which have worked so well. There is always room for improvement as players are hungry and dedicated to once again experiencing the feeling of being a premiership side in 2015. All teams start off on an even slate and all clubs have been working hard to add depth and new inspiration to their groups. South Gawler feel they have achieved this, adding some experienced and youthful talented players into the mix as well as retaining the services of some of the most talented players in the competition. South are ready for the challenges ahead and look forward again to a competitive and successful season.

New look for Tanunda Netball Club

“The Tanunda Netball Club go into the 2015 season with brand new courts, new uniforms, a new senior one coach, a new President and with some team changes in the senior one team line up,” said president Maria Fraser. The courts are a major improvement for the club which visiting teams will be sure to appreciate. Maria Fraser has stepped down as Senior One coach and taken on the role of President with Amy Hart appointed as the 2015 Senior One coach. Amy comes to Tanunda from Harlequins and will implement her game style and ideas in to the playing group. The Senior One side has had some personnel changes with Sarah Parker playing in the state league and Nicole Crouch who will be out with a new baby expected soon. New players include Kate Quinn, Bec Walsh, Samantha Lynch and Sophie Alderslade coming

just made the excitement for this season even greater. Barossa United is still a casual, friendly team so they like to go out and play as a bunch of mates having some fun. For this season they would like to build on their success last year, get some more players into the club and work their way towards having two teams. Barossa United have some people to watch out for this season; James Ruwoldt, who scored some really great goals in 2014 and was the top scorer, and Michael Slade, who is the person you can always count on in defence. This year will mark the club’s sixth year in operation and have a really strong looking squad. This will be the team’s first full season with the pitch being fully lit by floodlights which will really help with training and player improvement.

into the side from the twos. The junior numbers are strong and the club is looking to identify the junior players who are ready and able to progress to the seniors. The club is selecting its strongest juniors in the top sides so they are contenders for a premiership. With training well under way Tanunda supporters are all looking forward to the start of the season. First fund raiser for the season is an Easter event with all the girls selling delicious Cadbury chocolates. As a Club players are getting primed for the season ahead and are looking to improve on last season’s results by having more teams making finals. “We wish all our teams, coaches and umpires an enjoyable and successful season in 2015. We also greatly appreciate our sponsors and thank them for their support,” remarked Maria Fraser.

Barossa United Soccer Club looks forward to sixth season The Barossa United Senior Soccer season starts on April 19 and they will be playing in Division 7. This is the division where you play if you only have one team as Barossa United does. Player numbers this year have been excellent and are up from previous seasons and club officials have seen a lot of new players come through. The club has around 20 players but will still take players if they are interested as it is a long season and real life always happens along the way. Training is on a Wednesday night at 6.30 p.m. at the Barossa United Pitch at Nuriootpa and games are on a Sunday at 3.00 p.m. The club had an amazing season last year and considering the quality of the teams in the division were really happy with how it went. New artificial turf pitch proving popular The 2014 Barossa hockey season was the first played on the artificial turf pitch and player and team skills adapted and improved rapidly.

All clubs were represented on Grand Final day last year; however Nuriootpa Hockey Club spoilt the party for most of them, taking out four of the six

premierships. Nuriootpa is looking to continue this success in 2015. The senior men have had a strong turnout at pre-season training and the club is again fielding an A grade and two B grade teams. Their women’s A grade and B grade teams, both with new coaches, will be looking to improve their results from last year when neither team was represented in the grand final. The Nuriootpa junior programme has an influx of new coach appointments in charge of moulding the skills of the younger club members, many of whom will be pushing for selection in the senior squads. Also fielding an A grade and two B grade men’s teams, the Tanunda men’s squad has suffered a number of outs from last year but expectations are still high. Tanunda women have picked up a couple of experienced transfers to add to an already strong squad, hoping to improve on their A grade runner up position last year. The club has added a second B grade women’s team this season, following last year’s premiership. Tanunda’s increasing strength in juniors will be evident in the number of players taking the field. Many of them will also be pushing for selection into the senior squads. FAMILY FUN: Hockey is a game for all ages and the Waechter family is a perfect With Tanunda Hockey Club example. Matthew, who has been a hockey player for 26 years, has clocked up 150 senior celebrating its 30th birthday games with Nuriootpa and nearly as many with AMU; his mother, Marie has played this season, regardless of for 22 years with Nuriootpa and her grandchildren, Chloe and Mitchell are in the what occurs on the pitch, AMU Under 9s and Under 11s respectivly. this will be an exciting and

Growth spurt for Barossa United

fun-filled year. Keep an eye out for their birthday bash in August. The Trinity Old Scholars Hockey Club A grade men are looking forward to a good competitive season, following great improvement last year finishing the season in third place. Their women’s team will contest the B grade to start a rebuilding process with the aim of returning to A grade in 2016. Trinity College students will make up several junior sides this year. The College expects to have at least five junior teams in Under 9/11/13 age groups. As the only side competing for a premiership, the Under 13 team includes a healthy mix of experienced players, as well as some energetic newcomers. They hope to perform well throughout the season, improve their skills and challenge the finals come the end of the year. After failing to field a men’s team in 2014, Gawler Hockey Club have appointed experienced coach, Matt Kingsmill, to lead their revival. Although still a few players short of confirming their team, it is hoped they are successful and add strength to their own club and variety to the competition. Gawler will continue to have a strong presence in the women’s grades and will be strong contenders to win consecutive A grade premierships. AM United is fielding a team in all four senior grades. They are looking forward to a strong season with new coaches for both the A grade men and women. A few old names returning to the men’s squad should bolster the B grade team, who will be aiming for a finals berth for the first time in many years. Both women’s teams will be back fighting to regain their dominance of the last decade. While still looking for more juniors to up the numbers, AMU will be fielding competitive teams from Hook in2 Hockey through to U18s and are looking forward to the challenge of rebuilding the junior side of the club to what it once was.

Known as the “World Game”, the popularity of soccer is skyrocketing in the Barossa. This season, the Barossa United Soccer Club has had its biggest growth spurt since the idea of starting a club in the region was mooted back in the late eighties. Committee and proud “soccer mum”, Ms Vicki Ireland said the club has fielded 14 teams and recruited more than 40 new players. “This year we did a real recruitment push and we did some in-school soccer sessions by our coaches,” said Vicki. “We also had John Brown from the Elizabeth and District Junior Soccer Association come up and do a session at Tanunda Primary School.” As a result and in a first for the Nuriootpa based club, they have two Under 19 and Under 11 teams this year. “We can put that down to our recruitment but probably also down to the Asian Cup, the world Cup.... We think that people are just becoming more interested. It’s been fantastic. “The club is really growing. The great thing is that it is inclusive of both

boys and girls. Even at 16 and 17 there are girls playing with the boys,” said Vicki. Training is well underway for all teams as more than 200 juniors eagerly prepare to play season opening matches in the Elizabeth and District Junior Soccer Association on April 11. There are exciting times ahead for the Barossa United soccer Club. The addition of new lighting and shelter sheds last year has further enhanced their home ground behind the Nuriootpa Sports Complex and because of new player registrations and extra teams, new coaches have also been recruited. “We’ve had three female coaches put their hands up so it really is gender inclusive,” explained Vicki who is proud of the family friendly feel at the Club. Part of the Elizabeth and District Junior Soccer Association, Barossa United Junior Soccer Club teams travel to various locations in the northern suburbs for their away matches which are played on Saturday and Sundays. Rugby Barossa Rams Rugby Union Club prepare for season 2015 The Barossa Rams have been preparing for the new season by training Tuesday and Thursday nights since mid-January, with a view to an improved 2015 season. The Rams are expected to field a single senior team this season and have retained coaching pair Nigel Peters (head coach) and Vili Kamikamica. The Rams expect to improve on last season’s building momentum and hit the ground running this season. Several seasoned players return for another season of rugby. ‘Big Bad’ Brad Mackay, Mark Cooper and Pete Muchamore, will be on hand to help guide the younger Rams’ players with honing their skills in the senior ranks. Again the Rams will be looking for continued improvements from the young players like Joe Crouch, Pani Vuata, Michael Moloney and Daniel Mackay. Barossa Rams young player, Mason Canning has been accepted to represent South

Australia State rugby 7’s team, which is a great feather in the cap for the club. For the very first time in the Barossa Rams history, the club will be fielding an Under 16’s team. The players are from last season’s Under 14’s team who are now eligible by age to now create the U16’s Junior Rams. The Rams can also be proud and thankful that the Club’s junior development programme is bearing fruit in more ways than expected. The Barossa Rams have had seven of their players representing South Australia State Under 15’s team and the club’s best female player, Aine Rutley has been selected to represent South Australia Under 18’s Women’s 7’s team. This experience will definitely go a long way to building character and add an invaluable life experience to the players. Again this year the Junior teams will be filled from Under

7’s to Under 12’s for boys and girls and Under 14’s and 16’s for boys. The game of rugby has playing positions for all body shapes and types – from those too short for netball or basketball but can duck and weave; to the stronger but less agile of those who can make up the driving forwards with strength and control. There will be an information session at the Lyndoch Oval Clubrooms on April 2 at 5.30 p.m. for registration and new player queries. The Rams will be away for Round 1 on April 11 playing against Woodville at Bailey Reserve with the game starting 12.40 p.m. The Rams first home game at Lyndoch Oval will be Round 4 against Adelaide University. Contacts for the Barossa Rugby Club are Head Coach Nigel Peters 0438 854 673 and Junior Co-ordinator, Jim Fielder 0401 683 922. Go Rams!
