CO-OPERATING FOR THE FUTURE

A co-operative is a member owned and controlled business that operates for the mutual benefit of its members. Co-operatives operate around the world in all sectors of the economy and include agriculture, food distribution and retailing, childcare, credit unions, purchasing, worker-owned, healthcare, energy and telecommunications cooperatives. Co-operatives promote the fullest possible participation in the economic and social development of their communities and are a major economic force in developed countries and a powerful business model in developing ones. Worldwide, approximately 1 billion people are members of co-operatives and the economic activity of the largest 300 cooperatives in the world equals the 10th largest national economy. Incidentally, Australia is considered about the 12th largest national economy. Your co-operative has grown over the past seventy years to become the largest retail co-operative in Australia. The organisation has a strong balance sheet, operates cash flow positive businesses and is presently debt free. Not an insignificant achievement in a highly competitive and increasingly globalised market! The Co-op has a history of regularly and appropriately investing in the future for the benefit of its members and quickly paying off debt. All Co-op members can be justifiably proud of the history and growth of their business. The role of the Board is to govern the organisation on behalf of the members, not to manage the organisation. The Board agrees the strategic direction and provides the leadership, resources and inspiration for management to

deliver against those strategies and high level governance policies. All Board decisions need to address the question: Is this in the best interest of members? In addressing that question the Board needs to appropriately balance long-term benefit against short-term benefit. There is a misconception that the Co-op is anti-competition. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Board is very much in favour of competition because that ultimately works for the benefit of members. What the Board is opposed to though is the growth and expansion of those organisations which would seek to achieve monopolistic or duopolistic power by suppressing competition through the use of excessive force, misleading and deceptive advertising, and by not treating suppliers in a commercially fair and reasonable manner. The Board is looking to the future to ensure the Barossa continues to have retail options without the need for residents to be forced to travel outside the region. We are committed to supporting local suppliers and developing employment and career paths for local people and a vibrant local community. We are extremely positive about the future and as a Board we are keen for The Co-op to do what it can in building a prosperous future not only for members but for the Barossa region as a whole. This will involve the business again prudently and carefully investing in new infrastructure and buildings as has been a regular tradition in the history of The Co-op. I hope you enjoy reading this feature which celebrates 70 years of your Co-op.

Looking to the future by building on 70 years of retailing success by Graeme Longmuir, CEO

Seventy years on and getting stronger. This is an exciting moment to be part of Australia’s most successful and resilient retail co-operative. There are over 17,000 members now at The Co-op and there are just over 17,000 people living in the Barossa region. That means that everyone here owns a little piece of a very successful community business. With turnover now exceeding $67 million, over 1.2 million customers visiting every year and the strong community support received by The Co-op, should make everyone in the Barossa feel very proud. We are the envy of regional towns all across Australia and what you have created is something very unique and special. Over the years successive Barossan communities have re-shaped, re-invented and reinvigorated The Co-op to take on the challenges of an ever changing world. The value added to the region by previous co-op members is not easy to measure except to say that The Co-op is currently thriving and looking to invest into its future. This is the same as successive generations of the community have done over the past 70 years. A lot of this current strength is due to the hard work and foresight from previous members. From humble beginnings on the corner of Murray Street and

Gawler Street, Nuriootpa, to being the region’s most diverse community based retailer and running the third largest supermarket in Australia, The Co-op has come a long way. A key to the success has been the constant ability to look forward and to set the business up for the long term. We can protect what has made us successful and we can build an even more prosperous Barossa region and beyond. As we celebrate 70 wonderful years of co-operation I’d like to thank all of our past employees who have made The Co-op such a popular place. Barossa sets the co-operative standard

The Barossa Co-op is the envy of many across Australia and the Business Council Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) proves it. Ms Melina Morrison, chief executive, speaks highly of The Co-op, referring to them as retail champions. The extensive history and success locally receives interest from all over Australia and the Barossa Co-op’s profile continues to grow as BCCM constantly refers to and uses The Co-op as a showcase of co-operating for economic and social sustainability. “Co-operative mutuals are like the ninja, part of the economy, maybe there is a lack of awareness about their strength but they are incredibly influential and have a great impact on communities,” said Melina. “In many areas, particularly regional Australia there are the same problems… a lack of vibrant and viable main streets because there’s not enough of the stayers in town. “Co-operatives have a long history and proven track record of being there for the long haul because they are owned and operated locally. “By the early 20th century there were more than 400,000 Australians in friendly societies providing benefits for more than one million members. “Today, Australia’s 13 million plus members of co-operatives and mutually owned businesses are in our motorists, non profit health funds, customer owned banks, agricultural businesses and member-owned super funds, local health and community services organisations to retail champions like The Co-op.” Reflecting on the development The Co-op is about to undertake, Melina said it is positive for the region and a signal of confidence. “This is a signal to the community that this Co-op is not leaving town,” said Melina. “It wants to invest in the local economy… it is not going to close down or move on when the economy dips. Their motivation

is to stay put and to provide on so many levels from employment, community investment and local economic development to building the retail infrastructure to keep people in the region.” Melina said the development of a retail precinct is keeping with what the community wants, providing lifeline, blood stream to local producers. Since their inception as a result of the International Year of Co-operatives in 2012, the Business Council Co-operatives and Mutuals has elevated the awareness of success of The Co-op in a number of ways. “We refer to the Barossa to look at what can happen when you have a community that’s forged around successful business… it is part of the culture of Nuriootpa,” said Melina. “People understand at a deep level that this commercial venture gives back to the social outcomes of the region. “It’s creating growth where other regions are in decline. “The economy needs a mix of business structures to ensure that it is protected from the vagaries of economic shocks. “The GFC showed that you shouldn’t put all of your eggs in one basket, like having only listed companies which are subject to stockmarket fluctuations. “Co-operatives are there to serve the needs of the members not distant shareholders, shared value as opposed to share value.” Melina said the BCCM is keen for the Government and public corporations, because members already know this, to know there is value in co-operatives, providing great retail experience and a connection to the local economy. “We see these businesses as champions, they are in the business of providing, of doing things, with commercial success in order to reinvest benefits of the business back into improving the outcomes for the members,” said Melina.

An experience like no other

Nuriootpa Foodland manager, Mr Ken Hodges has seen the growth of the region’s largest supermarket since he took on the role more than 20 years ago. And he is ready and excited to fulfil the vision of offering a fresh food market into the Barossa. It will be nothing like the region has seen before – a 4,500 sq m supermarket equating to 20 per cent more than the current site and with study tours, extensive research and planning continuing as they prepare for work to get underway in 2016, there’s plenty of reasons to get excited. “I am extremely excited,” said Ken. “I have been extremely fortunate to be in a position where I have involvement in the research and planning and the understanding of the importance of what this development means not only to The Co-op but the community of the Barossa.” Ken said what is to be offered will be something the community can all be proud of. For shoppers, it will be an experience like no other, given the chance to interact with staff across all departments

Following with the fresh food theme, there’ll be a continental deli, cheese section and service bakery with baked naked bread and hot doughnuts. Staff will be hands on to personally slice or shave your cheeses and deli meats and customers will be able to liaise with the butcher in a meat servery experience, to purchase specific cuts of meat. “It will be an experience,” said Ken. “Any opportunity for our staff to engage with the customers… we want to encourage that engagement with customers.” The relocation of Foodland into a purpose built supermarket will create an opportunity for undercover carparking in the old Foodland site and in going with Nuriootpa’s Aboriginal meaning of “meeting place” offer a location for community events. “We want to become a real meeting place,” said Ken.


CO-OPERATING FOR THE FUTURE “In the supermarket, there will be a café area inside where you can meet up with somebody for a catchup or you can purchase products in the supermarket and take it into the café. “There will also be a fast-casual concept of food where products like paninis and focaccias can be purchased.” The front corner of the new supermarket will be exposed glass and look out on the vines at Elderton Wines. There’ll be a deck where shoppers can sit and enjoy the scenery. Barossa produce will be showcased heavily throughout the new supermarket and eating areas, and there’ll be plenty of chances to interact with local producers and their products. And as they continue to look at the new complex, the team at Foodland are welcoming changes in preparation for the new store. “We are still very proud of the business we have and the store,” said Ken. “Everything we do now is all in preparation for the new store. Self serve checkouts are in preparation for the new store… when we get there a lot of this stuff is what we already do, it is not something we have to learn from scratch. “The whole mindset is in preparation for the new supermarket and improving the offering now.” Final plans are yet to be confirmed, but already artist impressions and concepts are being released in the consultation processes. The supermarket will stretch from The Co-op administration building towards the Indian restaurant with the front of the supermarket and the checkouts facing back to the original mall. It will be a $10 million development for the third biggest independent supermarket in the country.

Improving the future of shopping

The University of South Australia and the Barossa Co-op have developed a strategic alliance in an effort to enhance business at one of Australia’s biggest co-operative stores. Throughout October researchers from the University of South Australia will be looking for volunteers to help out with an exciting new shopping study. UniSA’s Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science has entered into a long-term collaboration with the Co-op to help them gain insight into their customers’ needs, provide customers with improved products and services, and help to plan a new supermarket development in Nuriootpa. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute is internationally renowned for its marketing expertise and influencing the practice of some of the world’s most successful companies including Coca-Cola and Unilever. Now, along with the help of Senior Research Associate, Dr Svetlana Bogomolova, the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute wants to bring its global knowledge ‘home’ to benefit South Australia. Dr Bogomolova, who initiated the Barossa Co-op collaboration, said the institute is excited to share their cutting edge technology with Barossa businesses. “This alliance will help local businesses to deliver even better products and services to their customers, while doing it smarter and more efficiently,” Dr Bogomolova said. “Our aim is to give a stronger voice to the consumer. The best results

are achieved when producers and retailers listen to their call.” Barossa Co-op Chief Executive Mr Graeme Longmuir said the alliance would draw on UniSA’s world-class research to help better serve Co-op members. Mr Longmuir said the partnership would also create opportunities for Co-op employees and other Barossa businesses to gain professional education and training with UniSA. “There are plans to run business seminars on a wide range of topics including consumer behaviour, branding, pricing and media,” Mr Longmuir said. “First up, though, UniSA researchers will study our members’ opinions about even better facilities and services they would like to see in the new mall and supermarket.” Researchers from the EhrenbergBass Institute will be seen around the Barossa Co-op store departments, which include Foodland, Mitre 10, Betta Electrical, Sports Power, Toyworld and much more. “Local shoppers can expect to see our researchers in the mall, asking for help to test technology and equipment or even take part in a survey,” said Dr Bogomolova. Researchers will be looking for 200 shoppers who regularly visit The Co-op to be a part of the important research project, which links what people buy in a supermarket with the health of their body and budget. “This new research technology is fun and exciting for participants, unlike the old methods of tedious questionnaires,” said Dr Bogomolova. “We’ve had very positive feedback from participants in similar studies.”

Co-op online answers changing trends

For some it can be a chore, for others finding the time can be a challenge and for many the answer to their weekly grocery shopping is one click away with Nuriootpa Foodland’s online service. The first week of the online service in March 2012 processed 30 orders, where a delivery service or click and collect was offered over two days in Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Angaston and Greenock. Today a team of personal shoppers are collecting, on average, 175 orders per week over five days delivering from Williamstown to Sedan, Kapunda, Clare and most areas in between.

Denice McPhee, Nuriootpa Foodland operations manager, said the online service was the result of team members picking up on a changing trend. “Customers were wanting an alternative to the traditional shopping instore,” said Denice. “They were wanting a service that freed up precious time, but still wanted to support local business.” Nuriootpa Foodland Online is supported by an independent supermarket business, Banana Blue. “Our online shopping business had a large growth spurt in May, 2013 when we took over

Clare and some of its surrounding areas,” said Denice. “This came about because a few locals from the area came to us wanting an online service in their area; it was then the service grew to five days a week.” Proud they are able to meet the changing needs of their customers, the initiative has also resulted in the employment of eight locals and two delivery contractors. “Darryl now has two vans out on the road, ensuring our customers’ groceries are delivered in a timely manner,” said Denice. Technology to enhance customer experience The Co-op’s Robert Zander, IT Manager, with the new generation digital deli scales and queuing system installed at Nuriootpa Foodland.

Various changes to technology have recently occurred across The Co-op and Manager of Information and Services, Mr Robert Zander is looking forward to continuing to enhance customer experience. “In all of our ventures we strive to consider not only what we need now, but what we will need for the future,” said Robert. “We want to ensure that Co-op customers have a unique and innovative shopping experience.” Due to growing traffic throughout The Co-op and Foodland, there became a growing need for innovative technology to ensure timely service for customers. A new queuing system was installed at the deli and seafood and poultry section in Foodland in July and provides a quicker and more efficient way of serving. “We can also do simple yet effective things with the printed tickets from the queuing systems, such as give our customers an estimated wait time to be served,” said Robert. “Customers can take their ticket, see the estimated time and then shop for a while longer before returning to the deli to be served.” The screens that interact with the queuing system can also be configured to display product specials, recipes and cooking demonstrations. “If in the future you buy salmon for example, the screen will display recipes that have salmon as an ingredient,” said Robert. The Automatic Reordering System was implemented by The Co-op in May and is a process where stock is looked at line by line and the quantity on hand is evaluated against the sales for that line. This determines an appropriate amount of stock to be reordered. “This is more efficient and a more accurate way of ordering stock that ensures the products our customers are looking for are always available,” said Robert. “The system dynamically reorders stock, so we don’t need to have the same amount of large quantities as what we have in the past. “This assists in keeping the aisles clear and uninhibited for a safe and convenient customer experience and ultimately aims to ensure stock is consistently available.” Six self-serve checkouts are scheduled to be installed in November and Robert is looking forward to improving the shopping experiences of customers in Foodland. “With our commitment to customer service, we wanted to give our shoppers more choice and a better service in Foodland,” he said. “We are installing six self-serve checkouts and these checkouts will be in addition to the existing 16 checkouts. “The self-serve checkouts will not only speed up any check out queue times, but it will also give our members more choice of how they would like to check out from the store.” Robert says that the implementation of The Co-op’s new technology has occurred with a strong focus on the future of the organisation. “I’m really excited about the changes that have occurred and the upcoming exciting changes across The Co-op,” he said. “I enjoy driving efficiencies and being creative and innovative in my work. “We strive to be innovative and creative now so that we are sustainable in the future and this means we can continue to offer our customers the services they need with the high level of customer focus that underpins us as a Co-op.”

Co-operatives have had a presence in the Australian economic and social landscape since the 1850’s. A co-operative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations, through the jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.

The local shopping community rallied to purchase Sheard’s Service Store Limited in Nuriootpa. One of Australia’s most successful retail co-operatives was born with an initial issue of 7,500 one pound shares held in trust by the first Committee of Management.

An integral part of the Barossa’s Vintage Festival celebrations, The Co-op created specially themed window displays to welcome the jubilee year of the festival.

Expansion was untertaken over the years and to coincide with the Co-ops 21st birthday celebration, the Barossa’s first self serve Foodland supermarket opened in 1965.

The Co-op joins the community in an effort to ease the devastating effects of one of the worst floods the Valley has ever known.

The Co-op borrowed extensively to purchase a major parcel of commercial land to the south of the town. This land included a large Mitre 10 hardware store, which gave opportunity to merge and relocate the Co-operative’s existing hardware division to the new site. Plans were underway to develop the Co-operative’s own shopping centre.

The Co-op has always had a strong sense of giving back to the community that owns it and continually came up with different fundraising events to support local schools, hospitals and organisations in need.

The Co-op expands

Major extension and redevelopment became evident as the Co-operative fought to fulfill the community’s growing needs. The hardware division was rebuilt and expanded in 1978 and the furniture division was opened in1987 to cater for the increasing residential developent. Membership in the Co-op grew rapidly to in excess of 12,000 members.

The Barossa regional shopping centre opens

In November of 1998 the Co-op opened “The Barossa Regional Shopping Centre” housing a state of the art 4,000m2 IGA Foodland supermarket and potential for eight specialty shops. This bold move released 2,000m2 of prime floor space in the main street department store site.

A sustainable future for the Co-op Mr Shane Wild has taken up the role of Co-op Facilities Manager and has enjoyed working with a focus on improving sustainability over the past four months. Recently the Co-op Sustain programme has come into effect and involves the Co-op teaming up with Zero Waste SA, along with some of its suppliers to look into minimising waste generation and energy consumption. This process has involved the collection of data across both areas in order to gain an understanding of the avenues for improvement. “We are building for the future with the re-development here at The Co-op,” said Shane. “It’s important that what we build is not only the most cost effective now, but is also economical and sustainable in the future. “We are now at a point where we have established some actions and we are working towards completing them.” There are a variety of actions that the Co-op will be looking to implement as part of the Co-op Sustain programme, including the replacement of fluorescent lighting with energy efficient LED lighting, replacing inefficient dated air conditioning systems and synchronising Foodland refrigeration compressors to maximise energy efficiency. “This has been a great programme and not only have we been able to establish some actions and goals and work towards achieving them, but it has also brought sustainability to the forefront of people’s minds,” said Shane. “We are breeding a culture where we think twice about how to dispose of our waste or how we use our energy, which is really good.

“The timing for this programme is fantastic too because we can take the lessons learnt here and apply them to the upcoming Co-op re-development.” The Co-op aims to engage local suppliers and contractors as much as possible, keeping with the “sticky money” concept, where money spent in the community stays in the community. “Our suppliers have been following the same path as us, collecting the data and understanding where they can improve or change,” said Shane. “Nuriootpa Traders for example, are already doing some really good things as far as sustainability goes and are working towards developing their Environmental Policy. “This will depict their commitment to sustainability and the environment and will be something that is publically available.” As Facility Manager, Shane’s role involves overseeing anything related to building and infrastructure across all Co-op owned sites. “I ensure our buildings are operating effectively which in turn means our retailers and tenants can continue to provide their services to the community,” said Shane. “My input to this project will be largely centred around what we procure and build, ensuring that it is not only what we want or need now, but importantly what we will need in the future. “What I aim to bring to The Co-op is an approach to our operations, which considers sustainability in all of its forms. “When we build or procure something, we need to be considering not only what it costs us now, but what it costs us in the future and importantly what its impact is on the environment.”

“The first was just a group of us that wanted to increase our fitness and general wellbeing. The workouts will be done weekly in small groups with a different programme running each week. “The class of eight, along with me, provide motivation and support to help participants stay on track and reach their goals,” said Ryan. “The 10 week challenge I offer is a unique, nutrition and fitness programme created to help lose weight, get stronger, tone, improve fitness and change eating habits,” he said. Employees who participate in the challenge will receive nutritional guidance, training workouts, regular weigh-ins with specific feedback on progress and an awards ceremony at the end to celebrate their success. Paul talked about the great success of the first challenge and how they thought it would be great to offer this programme to all staff members. “It was great to see everyone achieve their goals that they individually set,” he said. “It was suggested how good it would be for all staff to have the same opportunity to improve their wellbeing. “Now we have the Co-op wellbeing programme up and running with nearly 60 employees and some partners participating.” RL0068

In an effort to help employees balance work with the rest of their life, The Co-op has offered staff a free 10 week fitness challenge. Together with Health Partners and Future Image training and personal trainer, Mr Ryan Wood, the Co-op have designed to help staff to get fitter and healthier. Mr Paul Schupelius, Manager of Barossa SportsPower/Surfwear, has played a major role in organising the challenge and explained the importance of keeping fit. “Maintaining fitness is very important as it reduces the risk of heart disease, blood pressure, diabetes and helps your general strength and keeps you more alert,” said Paul. Paul also talked about the importance of having a balanced life. “Having a good balance between work, life and fitness is essential for your own wellbeing in the fast paced society that we live in,” he said. “It is important that people take the time out for themselves and fitness and exercise is a great way of achieving this.” A group of 60 people have already signed on to participate in the 10 week challenge. “This is the second challenge,” said Paul.
