All roads lead to Tanunda Oval this Saturday for the Grand Finals and four of the teams will be hoping to collect premiership medals on the day. This will be the first Grand Final to be held at Tanunda Oval since 2005 and 24th one to be held there since 1912. In the A-Grade the big match is between the Gawler Central Tigers and the South Gawler Lions. These two teams are playing off in their first ever Grand Final in the Barossa, Light & Gawler Association. They last met in one in 1986 and South Gawler 20-14 (134) defeated Gawler Central 18-9 (117) in the final season of the Gawler & District Football League. The two teams have only met in two minor finals in the B., L. & G. with South winning both, the 1990 Second Semi Final and the 1994 Qualifying Final. Gawler Central are sending three teams to this venue while Willaston and South Gawler are sending two and Tanunda one.

As said earlier, South’s midfield is nothing short of transcendent with players like Matthew Foldesdy, Jackson Dare, Joel Chapman, Aaron Bevis and Paul Marschall all working together to tear teams apart through the corridor, on the wing and around the stoppages. Add a consistent run of goals from both players and the duo will be quite a handful on Saturday. Top two in Reserves final RESERVES Gawler Central v. Willaston
Willaston and Gawler Central are set to do battle in the Reserves Grand Final with both sides sporting impressive line-ups. The Donnybrooks and the Tigers finished first and second with Central winning the Second Semi Final, sending Willaston into a must win Preliminary and the Donnybrooks won the do-or-die final against Freeling to make the best of their second chance. Over the course of the season, Central and Willaston had very different results in their minor round meetings. In round two, the Tigers mauled the Donnybrooks and won by 77 points. However, come round 11, Willaston turned the tables and won by 64. Most recently, in the Second Semi, Central won that by 36. So it’s hard to get a read on a potential outcome of this highly anticipated final. It’s made even more challenging with Willaston having lost to wooden spooners, Barossa District back in round 15. Joshua Carter won the Reserves Best and Fairest and has played superbly throughout the season. Carter has worked overtime in the midfield, in attack and in defence to lead his side to where they are this week. Working alongside Carter is player/coach, Max Bornholdt. Bornholdt booted 40 goals over the course of the season and caused havoc against opposition defences. Central will certainly have to stop the power forward if they want a good chance of winning. Other top performers for Willaston this season have been Jared Stephens and Brandon Rendell while Jamie and Damien Quirk have provided useful goals up forward. For Central, they have been led by a bunch of consistent performers in Rhys Kalic, Ian Naulty, Jonathon Hallion and Adam Cox with the quadrant frequently sending the ball forward to their goal scorers which include Arran Fox, Paul Bova, Jordan Neat and Cameron Maher, all of whom have bagged more than the occasional major. Fox in particular, kicked 32 during the season and three in the Second Semi win over the Donnybrooks.
Another good performer in that semi was Kyle Wurst with the midfielder getting plenty of the ball and finding the goals twice. However, in that semi final Central scored nine goals to nineteen behinds. That sort of accuracy will have to be rectified or Willaston may capitalise on missed opportunities. With Central having lost last year’s Reserves Grand Final by 14 points to Barossa District in extra time, the Tigers will be out make good on this chance. Willaston on the other hand, haven’t been in a Grand Final since 1999, which resulted in a loss. Their last Premiership in the Reserves was 1991. That win made it a hatrick (’89, ’90 and ’91) for the Donnybrooks with all three of those victories being over Central. C e n t r a l m ay h av e a b i t m o r e r u n , b u t Wi l l a s t o n m a y h a v e t h e s t r o n g e r b o d i e s. It’s a tough one to call, but it’ll be a good game to watch and the perfect lead up to the long-awaited A-Grade final - Central by 17 points. Willaston has played in four and won three. They also won eight in the Gawler League for a total of 12 premierships. Gawler Central has played in 12 and have won five and they also won 10 in the Gawler League for a total of 15 premierships. Willaston has never played in one at Tanunda. Gawler Central has played in two at Tanunda and have won both. Gawler Central last played in one in 2013 and lost to Barossa District, 8-12 (60) to 11-8 (74) in extra time. They last won one in 2009, 11-3 (69) to Nuriootpa 8-10 (58) at Freeling. Willaston last played in one in 1999 and lost to South Gawler, 3-5 (23) to 10-7 (67) at Nuriootpa. Willaston last one a Grand Final in 1991, 3-6 (24) to Gawler Central 1-9 (15) at Angaston. Gawler Central and Willaston have met in three Grand Finals since joining and Willaston have won all three, 1989-90-91.

In the Under 17’s Grand Final, the top-finishing Willaston Donnybrooks will take on the everlasting South Gawler Lions in what will be an interesting clash. Willaston are certainly the favourites to win with the Donnybrooks having lost the one game back in round nine against Gawler Central. Apart from that little kink, Willaston has dominated offensively and defensively all through the year. Offensively, the Donnybrooks have been relentless in attack with a total of 1,652 points being scored. Todd Stansborough is the main reason why Willaston has been so damaging when it comes to scoreboard dominance with the forward booting 64 goals in the minor round. Additionally, Brayden Coombs was another big sticks finder with the attacker kicking 39. There has been no shortage of goals at Donnybrookland. Defensively, Willaston have had things locked down in the back half, only letting 452 points slip. In contrast, South haven’t been the best attacking or defending side but time and time again have won the big games when it counted - in particular, last Saturday’s Preliminary Final against Barossa District. The scores were deadlocked at the final siren which made the game go into extra time. South battled and managed to edge away and secure a finals win. Also, a one point win over Gawler Central in the First Semi Final after trailing by 23 points in the early stages of the last quarter. So South have the mental strength should the game become close in the dying stages. South’s Ben Washington and Willaston’s Loclahne Elliot were both joint winners of the Under 17’s Best and Fairest with both players having exceptional seasons. Washington scored 24 goals throughout the season but also got plenty of the ball around the ground. While Elliot didn’t score as many goals, his roving skills and smooth style helped him to constantly find himself in the best players. Remarkably, South’s last four Grand Final appearances have all been victories with the Lions last premiership defeat coming against Willaston in 2007. Funnily enough that was the Donnybrooks’ last Grand Final appearance. Be sure to watch out for Darcy Judd-Smith, Lachlan Carter and Scott Trenorden all of whom have been playing great for the Lions. Likewise, Willaston’s Bryn Parsloe, Brad Cox and Matthew Spirritt will be out in force for the Donnybrooks with the trifecta set to prove troubling. South will fight hard when the time comes. But after the dominant season Willaston has had, the Donnybrooks should walk away the proverbial victors - Willaston by 22 points. Willaston has played in 10 Grand Finals since joining the association and have won five. They also won five in the Gawler & District League for a total of 15. South Gawler has played in eight and have won five. South also won 11 in the Gawler & District League for a total of 16. South Gawler has never played in one at Tanunda. Willaston has played in one at Tanunda and lost to Tanunda, 8-7 (55) to 9-6 (60) in 2005. South and Willaston have played in one Grand Final since joining in 1987 and Willaston won it, 12-12 (84) to 7-6 (48) in 2007 at Nuriootpa. South last played in one in 2013 and defeated Gawler Central, 9-11 (65) to 7-10 (52) at Gawler. South have played in five of the past seven, winning four of them. Willaston last played in one in 2007 and defeated South Gawler, 12-12 (84) to 7-6 (48) at Nuriootpa.

Saturday’s Under 17’s Preliminary Final was a draw at full-time between South Gawler and Barossa District with Barossa on 3-10 (28) to South 4-4 (28) which South Gawler eventually won in extra time, 7-4 (46) to 4-11 (35). This is the seventh extra time match since the tie-breaker was introduced in 1989 for all grades except A-Grade. The A-Grade tie-breaker was introduced in 2006. The first extra time match was in 2002 when South Gawler and Kapunda Under 17’s drew in the First Semi Final at Willaston, South 6-12 (48) to Kapunda 7-6 (48) and then South won 7-13 (55) to Kapunda 7-6 (48). The next draw was the same day in the A-Grade when Nuriootpa and South Gawler drew with 12-10 (82) each and Nuriootpa eventually won, 13-13 (91) to 12-10 (82). The next draw was again in 2002 when
Gawler Central and Tanunda Under 17’s drew in the Second Semi Final at Nuriootpa, 7-5 (47) each before Gawler Central won 8-6 (54) to 7-5 (47). In 2006 Barossa District and Freeling drew in the A-Grade Second Semi Final at Nuriootpa, 10-9 (69) each before Barossa District won 12-9 (81) to 10-9 (69). In 2012 Freeling and South Gawler drew in the First Semi Final, Freeling 9-9 (63) to South Gawler 10-3 (63) at Freeling. Freeling ended up winning 11-11 (77) to South 10-3 (63). Last year Barossa District and Gawler Central were level at full time, Barossa 9-6 (60) to Central 8-12 (60) at Gawler. Barossa eventually won 11-8 (74) to 8-12 (60) in extra time. Preliminary Finals, in the final four system, are the only finals where no drawn matches have resulted whether under the tie-breaker rule or the former replay next week.

The Barossa Light and Gawler Football (BL&G) is heading into the Grand Final this weekend with four clubs fighting for premiership glory. The Grand Final for the 2014 season will be held at the Tanunda Oval. Thank you to the Tanunda Football Club working party for their efforts in preparation for the big day. In particular thank you to The Barossa Council for their efforts in getting the oval surface ready, many pundits said it couldn’t be done. Not to mention the repairs to the netball courts, by the Netball Club as the new courts will not be ready in time. To all those attending the Grand Final remember that the ever popular buses will be running from major centres (towns) to the Tanunda Oval. The Schluter Medal Count conducted last week was a huge success, with Daniel Stanley from Gawler Central Football
Club, the ultimate winner. All other grades were presented with awards on the night. As the strongest and most progressive country association, we need to continue to build on our existing strong foundation, moving forward. The legacy left by Presidents, Nobby Symes (retired) and Rick Pearson (resigned) give the league a stable and firm structure to achieve this. The Association is in a reasonably strong financial position, thanks to the long standing support and of our sponsors. The BL&G Directors are committed to moving forward to ensure the financial stability of all affiliated clubs. The Board has allocated support funding to all affiliated clubs to assist with upgrading player JLT Insurance over a three year period. Clubs will be allocated a further dividend over a two year period. The Board is looking at a range of options to ensure that the BL&G remains the strongest country league and that it’s affiliated clubs remain viable, competitive and members continue to enjoy the full benefits of the club environment With the previously mentioned vacancies created by Nobby (Symes) and Rick Pearson, the Board is looking to refresh, with new blood and energy, by calling for registration of interest for the vacancies, including President, as soon as the Finals are over. Underdog Magpies ready to battle UNDER 15’S Gawler Central v. Tanunda
The opening match of the 2014 BL&GFA Grand Final day in the Under 15’s is between front runner and premiership favourite, Gawler Central and home advantaged underdog, Tanunda. The game should be a tight clash between two contrasting teams. On one hand you have the dominant Central who are on a 13 game winning streak and then there’s Tanunda who have fought tooth and nail in two tough finals to get a crack at the cup. Throughout the minor round, Central scored a total of 1,293 points which was 458 points more than Tanunda (835). Leading the way up forward for the Tigers was star-forward, Brodi Mathews who not only booted 52 goals during the year, but also four goals in his side’s Second Semi Final victory over Barossa District. Working alongside Mathews in attack are Brandon Hubbard and Luke Johnson who have both found the goals more often than not and
have provided Central with many avenues to the big sticks. While Tanunda haven’t been outlandish with their scoring capabilities, they have four consistent goal scorers which Central will have to stop in Nicolas Burton, Ryan Falkenberg, Ryan Hoklas and Jack May. Falkenberg also finished second in the Under 15’s Best and Fairest and has been a big standout all season. In their past two finals appearances, Tanunda’s Patrick Mudge was a vital player in both games with the ultility finding plenty of the ball. Central’s Brandon Acton was exceptional in his side’s First Semi win with Trey Mason another top performer. Central’s Bradley Pilkington and Brandon Kemp finished third and fourth in the Best and Fairest and have had great seasons to this point. On the history side of things, the last time Tanunda and Central played against each other in a Grand Final was back in 1997 and Tanunda won that by four points.
The odds would have Central to win but with a home ground advantage and underdog status, expect Tanunda to get close and the first Grand Final match of the day to be a tight one - Tanunda by three points. Gawler Central has played in six and have won two. From 1977 to 1986 Gawler Central also won five premierships in the Gawler & District League for a total of seven flags. Tanunda has played in 13 and have won eight. Gawler Central has never played in one at Tanunda. Tanunda has played in one at Tanunda and lost to Nuriootpa, 3-7 (25) to 5-0 (30) in 1973. Gawler Central last played in one in 2011 and defeated Kapunda, 11-9 (75) to 7-8 (50) at Angaston. Gawler Central and Tanunda have met in two Grand Finals and have won one each. Tanunda last played in one in 2010 and defeated Nuriootpa, 10-2 (62) to 7-3 (45) at Willaston.

Grand Final Medals
The gates will open at 7.30 a.m. to start off this year’s Grand Finals for football and netball. No alcohol is allowed to be taken into the ground. The Association Grand Final Medals that begun in 2007 will be presented to the best player in each grade after the respective matches. The Hurn Medal will be awarded to the best player in the A-Grade. The medal is an acknowledgment of the contribution made to local football by the Hurn dynasty of Angaston. For over 70 years three generations of Hurn families have had a significant impact on football in the area. In the Reserves the best player will receive the Jack Leske Medal. This medal recognises Jack’s contribution as a leading umpire in the competition. He had a great career umpiring in a record 14 Grand Finals. While now retired, he is a popular figure in football circles and well respected by the football fraternity. The best player in the U17’s will receive the Dean Tobitt Medal. Dean has a long standing passion for junior development and has been involved with juniors at Gawler Central for many years. The medal recognises his service to junior football, not only at Gawler Central but also the Association. A fitting medal for the best player in the U15’s is the Colin Mickan Medal. The late Colin Mickan was an outstanding sportsman who had a long and distinguished career both with Kapunda and the Association. He was one of the driving forces in getting the Colts competition started in 1959 and worked tirelessly for local football. The inaugural medal winners in 2007 were A-Grade: Jamie Sibbick, Barossa District; Reserves: Kallan Pfitzner, Kapunda; Under 17: James Moss, Willaston; Under 15: Shaun Lay, South Gawler.
Schiller brothers clean up Nuriootpa locals, Jarrod and Travis Schiller ‘cleaned the board’ at the Central District Football Club’s best and fairest count on Saturday. Jarrod received the Norm Russell Medal as the Bulldogs best and fairest player, but he wasn’t finished there, he went on to win Most Consistent League Player and the Danny Hulm Memorial Trophy for the most courageous league player. Younger brother, Travis finished fourth in the best and fairest count and took home the Les Stevens Memorial Trophy (League development award) in its inaugural year.

Patrons are reminded that there are no Grand Final replays anymore if scores are level at fulltime. In the event of any drawn matches, an extra five minutes each-way will be played in all grades until a result is achieved. Rule 4.1(c) states that a tiebreaker will proceed if any game is tied at the end of normal time. Pursuant to Rule 4.1(c) above the tiebreaker will proceed as follows: • At the conclusion of full time or any period of further play there shall be a three (3) minute break. • Teams shall change ends and play five (5) minutes (time on shall only apply in A-Grade games) followed by a three (3) minute break • Teams will change ends and play a further five (5) minutes and • Should the scores still be tied at that time then the same format shall be repeated until a decisive result has been achieved. NB ONLY Coaches and trainers are allowed to enter the field of play during the breaks when the Finals Tiebreaker is applied.
Premiership medallions and chimney painting The winning A-Grade team will be presented with Premiership Medallions after the A-Grade match on Saturday. Reserves, Under 17’s and Under 15’s premiership teams will also be presented with medallions straight after their Grand Finals. If the minor grades take too long to front the presentation stand after their match their medallions will be presented off of the main arena so that the next game can start on time without the quarters being cut back time wise. This presentation began in 1990 after being introduced into the SANFL and AFL
during the 1980’s. In 1986 the former TST Chimney Painting ceremony began and this will again take place around 11 a.m. on Monday morning at Nuriootpa for both A-Grade football and netball sides and interested spectators. The most common colour on top of the chimney has been black 15 times, white 16 times, blue 12 times, red nine times and gold six times. The most common colours underneath the premiership colours have been blue 17 times, red 16 times, white 12 times, black 10 times and gold twice.

Gawler Central Tiger Tales In the Preliminary Final played at Willaston on Saturday the club was represented with five netball teams playing. Saturday night was the Netball Association’s Annual Presentation Night where the Tiger gals were again crowned “Club of the Year” – representing the club that has won the most games throughout the season – quite an achievement This is something for every player, every coach, every supporter – the whole club to be very proud of. Among the many awards handed out on Saturday night, Best & Fairest awards were received by Lauren Sweet from Sub Junior 1, Samara Schmid from Inter 2 and Ellen O’Hennessy from Senior 7’s. The club had many runner-ups too. The Junior 1 team were also awarded the Junior Goal Throwing Trophy with their top score of 985. Gawler Central Sub Junior 2 team started the day and put up a fabulous team effort, though not quite strong enough in the end, being defeated. Followed by the Inter 2 game against South Gawler, these Tiger girls turned the game around in the second half to come away winners and into this week’s Grand Final. Senior 6 were up next and in a close contest, scored a winning margin against Tanunda and also go into the Grand Final! In the final time slot, both Senior 3 and 5’s took to the courts in what was quite a warm afternoon. Both teams put in great efforts and played their games out to the end, just not able to bridge the gap into a winning scoreline. The girls never gave up and can stand proud of their efforts! This week is the season finale - Grand Final day. Gawler Central will be represented by three football teams and five netball teams. Every Tiger supporter is needed at Tanunda on Saturday to get the boys and girls over the line in all games. Gawler Central Under 15’s come up against the
fast finishing Tanunda Magpies at 9.15 a.m. The Tiger youngsters have taken all before them and there is only one hurdle to jump. Coach Mathews has the lads primed for the last game of the year and they need plenty of spectators there to support the boys and get them over the line. The Reserves take to the field at 12.15 p.m. against the Willaston Donnybrooks who got their mojo back with an emphatic win against Freeling in the Preliminary Final. This will be a tough hard game and the Tigers will be looking to repeat their second semi effort. The match of the day begins at 2.20 p.m. and what a game it will be. Most supporters can’t remember the last time they played South in a Grand Final so this will be a very special game. With a near full strength side there will be no excuses for anything but a Premiership come 5 p.m. Saturday night from the Tigers. The 2014 Schluter Medallist, Daniel Stanley will lead the charge against the South on-ballers right from the first bounce. First up on the netball courts at 9.30 a.m. will be Gawler Central Inter 2 and Junior 2 sides, followed by Junior 1 at 11 a.m. and both Senior 4 and 6 at 12.45 p.m. Lots to keep spectators entertained in what will be some fast paced and skilled netball. Gawler Central supporters are welcome at the club on Saturday night to celebrate the day’s successes with meals being served from 6 p.m., music till late and all the premiership teams presented to the crowd. Sunday from 10 a.m. at the club will be the 100 Club draw with cheap drinks and lunch provided for all 100 Club ticket holders. End-of-year diary dates: September 21 100 Club draw at the club. This is Eudunda’s first Grand Final since they played in the 1982 Barossa & Light one against Tanunda. Eudunda and RSMU met in the 1978 Grand Final at Nuriootpa and Eudunda won. Robertstown last won one in 2009 in the Mid Murray before they amalgamated with Eudunda. Craig Harvey’s Diggers Rest lost the Grand Final in Victoria on Sunday to Romsey by 18 points. Brenton Bascombe’s West Coast Hawks won their second premiership in a row on Saturday. Grant Falkenberg goal umpired the Under 17’s on Saturday and Kym Schmidt the A-Grade. Grant is doing the Under 15’s this week and Kym the A-Grade.
As of 2015 the junior and senior registration process will be online only. Registrations open on December 1 this year through to February 2015. As a result of this new process the club needs to ensure that the parents/players know of the new changes and they need to inform the club with updated details or coaches should collect their player’s email addresses and mobile phone details, as this is going to be a major aid with the registration process for next season. If all parents can provide any changes to Meredith Dixon (Under 13 downwards) or Anthony Schubert (Under 15 upwards) it will help or email the club angaston-fc@chariot.net.au Without this vital information it will mean that some parents/players will not receive the invitation to register their child for football and may result in a delay or receiving other vital information or being able to register online. There will still be a registration day next February and they will need to register online but the club will be able to assist those without computer access. South Gawler Lion’s Den A successful day greeted the Lions last Saturday at Willaston Oval, as both the Under 17’s and the A-Grade sides progressed to this week’s 2014 BLGFA Grand Finals at Tanunda. The Under 17’s played another heartstopper with the full time scores indicating a drawn match. Showing an iron will for the second consecutive match, the lads dug in during extra time to advance to their fifth Grand Final in seven years with an 11 point victory over Barossa. Best for the Lions included Ryan Feuerherdt, Luke Torkington, Josh Crowe and Ben Greatorex. Brad Dankiewicz was superb as usual, whilst the maturing Darcy Judd-Smith was named BOG. The boys will face off in an all Gawler derby against the Willaston Donnybrooks. Scott Lee’s A-Grade side broke the clubs longest absenteeism from the big dance dishing out a football lesson to a Willaston side which was seen as a premiership favourite through stages of the year. Perhaps the club’s most improved player for
2014, Chunda Hewett continued to demonstrate his never say die attitude with another rock solid performance. Schluter Medal runner-up, Jackson Dare was magnificent as per usual, whilst key forward, Chad Connelly destroyed the Willaston defence ending up with four majors. Big time player, Matt Foldesdy was named BOG for his efforts. On October 10 the football and netball presentations will be held at the clubrooms and tickets are available at the bar. Fittingly as the club seeks its first A-Grade premiership since 1993 in a bid to end the longest premiership drought in club history, it will face off against arch-rival, Gawler Central. All members are urged to get to Tanunda Oval on Saturday to get both the Under 17’s and A-Grade sides over the line against their 125 year rivals. The club also wished all South Gawler footballers, netballers, match day staff and coaching staff best of luck in their search for premiership glory this Saturday.

A magnificant day greeted the Tanunda Under 15 lads as they made their way to Williaston for a do or die Preliminary Final against Barossa District. M The young Magpies have really A G IES P come together as a proud group this season under the coach and his team, with a “one for all, all for one” mentality showing out during a great week of training. The week off and the occasion seemed to have the lads a little unsure of their usual confidence with some uncharacteristic errors leading to the Bulldogs getting three goals in the opening quarter. However, not to be perturbed, the coaches and large contingent of supporters continued to get around the lads as they got to work and drew back to level terms with the young Dogs. Keeping the opposition goalless after quarter time and scoring goals in three quarters shows the young Magpies have the run in their legs and the game plan to sustain and succeed. But with this great result, a nine point win, the job is not finished. Playing a Grand Final is
a wonderful achievement. Playing a Grand Final on your home ground is a great opportunity, but to take on the benchmark in the competition and succeed will be magnificent. To the whole group involved with the Under 15’s, the season has had its difficulties, injuries, a large list and management hassles, but without a full team effort and total commitment these great results are not possible. Thanks also went to the senior boys for getting around the boys and training with them. This week the Tanunda Clubrooms will be open Thursday night for teas. Get down there and get around these young players. Bar will be open and it’s an opportunity to wish the boys all the best. Club members will be working all day Friday at the ground to ensure all is done. Any available hands will be appreciated and on Saturday a helpers’ breakfast at 6.30 a.m. will be a good start to the day. Onward and upwards for the Tanunda Football Club. The future of the club plays on Saturday and the club as a whole is on show for the region to take note of. Go Magpies.

Tanunda 12. Tanunda got off to a steady start over Freeling in the first quarter with a two goal advantage at the first break. Freeling’s nerves soon settled with good defence and drive into attack to help them reverse the tables on Tanunda to be up two goals at half time. Freeling continued to dominate, doubling their half time score at the three quarter time break by allowing Tanunda to score only two goals for the quarter. Tanunda’s spirit and determination showed throughout the game but especially in the final quarter with them scoring goal for goal with Freeling. Unfortunately for Tanunda the damage had been done in the second and third quarters, with Freeling victorious by seven goals at the final whistle. Sub Junior 2 - Nuriootpa 24 def. Gawler Central 11. Nuriootpa had a really strong first quarter to establish a 9 goal lead at the quarter break. Even though Gawler Central’s first quarter started slowly they came back strong and steady in the second quarter narrowing Nuriootpa’s lead to six goals. Central maintained their defensive pressure but were unable to reduce the deficit margin to less than six going into the final term. Nuriootpa’s first quarter tenacity was back, they applied strong defence and drive to extend their winning margin to 13 goals at the end of the final quarter. Sub Junior 1 - Tanunda 34 def. South Gawler 31. These two teams were evenly matched throughout the first half with scores tied at the quarter break. The evenly contested game continued into the second quarter with South Gawler managing to push ahead to finish the second quarter one goal up. South Gawler continued on their second quarter momentum extending their lead by four goals going into the final quarter. Tanunda’s determination and fitness in the final quarter out ran the South Gawler girls, they were able to capitalise on turnovers and finished the match with a seven goal turn around to win by three. Junior 2 - Willaston 53 def. Angaston 44. The game started close with only one goal in it at the first break. Angaston then powered away in the second quarter shooting 13 goals to Willaston’s seven, setting them up with a nice lead going into the second half. Changes made in the half time break made all the difference to the Willaston girls, with Willaston reversing the lead

Willaston 31. Freeling settled quickly, applying strong defenceover the court and good drive into attack which saw them in the lead by a slim margin at the first break. Willaston tried hard but were no match for a disciplined Freeling who were quick to snap up loose balls which goalies were eager to convert, rewarding their team and going into the second half seven goals up. Credit went to the Willaston girls who continued to apply pressure over the court and tried their best up until the final whistle blew. Freeling extended their winning margin in the second half to finish the game 10 goals up. Inter 2 - Gawler Central 47 def. South Gawler 39. Both teams came out playing a tightly contested game to find themselves with a tie of 10 all at the first break. South Gawler applied pressure and created the turnovers they needed to be up by six goals at half time. The third quarter saw changes made to the Central side, which enabled them to peg back their six goal deficit to just one goal going into the final quarter. The South girls continued to apply pressure but Gawler Central continued their third quarter momentum, with beautiful pressure and drive to finish the game victorious by eight goals. Inter 1 - South Gawler 43 def. Tanunda 41. South Gawler started the quarter off confident and strong taking the lead early to be three goals up at the first break. They continued to dominate the Tanunda side throughout the second quarter with good defensive pressure, which created the much need turnovers goalies were hungry to capitalise on seeing South extend their lead to six goals at half time. Tanunda made changes which saw a much more evenly contested quarter with Tanunda managing to peg back South’s lead to just three goals going into the last quarter. Both sides played a tight defensive game and the Tanunda girls gave it their all, out shooting the South goalies by one goal in the final quarter but unfortunately this was not enough for them to reverse the lead South gained early in the game with South finishing the victors by just two goals.

Barossa started playing a strong defensive game which created turnovers to see them doubling Willaston’s score at the first break. Willaston tried desperately to stop Barossa’s momentum putting defensive pressure on them but were unable to match them down the court with Barossa ahead by 12 at the half way mark. Experienced Barossa continued to capitalise on errors and created turnovers to be in the lead by 17 goals going into the final quarter. Willaston never gave up and in the last quarter out shot Barossa by one goal but unfortunately Willaston’s run was too late and Barossa finished with a 17 goal victory Senior 6 - Gawler Central 53 def. Tanunda 46. Both sides started out evenly with Gawler Central managing to be in front marginally by two goals at the first break. Gawler Central continued to pull away with a few turnovers leading them into the second half with a five goal advantage. Tanunda managed to peg back one goal in the tightly contested third quarter to go into the final quarter only four goals down. Central came out strong in the last quarter, their fitness and defensive pressure created turnovers that the Central goalies converted to bring their side home with a seven goal victory. Senior 5 - Angaston 50 def. Gawler Central 44. Angaston got the jump on Central from the first whistle to be leading by four goals going into the second quarter. Angaston continued their momentum, dominating Central and doubling their lead by the half time break. Central applied good defensive pressure in the second half and goalies rewarded their efforts keeping the deficit the same at the end of the third quarter. Central continued to apply pressure over the court and were narrowing the margin, but unfortunately Central’s run came too late and Angaston managed to hang on to their lead to win by six goals. Senior 4 - South Gawler 40 def. Willaston 39. A good contest by both teams applying defensive pressure all over the court. South Gawler gained an early advantage and capitalised on their opportunities to lead by two goals at the first break. In the second quarter Willaston stepped up; they applied good pressure and created turnovers which helped them reverse the lead to be three up at half time. Willaston continue their momentum to increase their winning margin to five goals up going into the last

quarter. South played a fabulous game in the last 15 minutes playing a tight defensive game, applying pressure all over the court and turnovers were rewarded by the goalies. South’s goalies shot 14 goals to Willaston’s six in the last quarter to regain the lead and win by one goal at the final siren. Senior 3 - South Gawler 42 def. Gawler Central 38. South got off to a good start to be up by six goals at the first break. Gawler Central capitalised on their opportunities and reduced the margin to four goals at half time. In the third quarter both teams went goal for goal, with South increasing their lead to be in front by five goals at the end of the quarter. Both sides put in their all and Central applied pressure and managed to decrease South’s lead marginally but the blending of South’s experienced players, with the talent of junior players, helped this team go on to win by four goals. Senior 2 - Kapunda 48 def. Willaston 45. This game was evenly contested from start to finish. In the first quarter Kapunda took the lead by one goal, but Willaston managed to peg back Kapunda’s lead to have the game tied at the half time break. In the third quarter both teams continued to apply pressure over the court. Beautiful defence and drive through the attack made this anyone’s game. Willaston managed to capitalise on the few turnovers created, to be in front by two goals going into the final quarter. As seen year after year, the experienced Kapunda side thrive under pressure. This year was no different and after going into extra time they pulled away from their rivals shooting 12 goals to Willaston’s seven winning by three goals to secure their berth in this week’s Grand Final. Senior 1 - Kapunda 47 def. South Gawler 43. The warm weather once again presented a challenge to all players. Kapunda and South Gawler were evenly matched throughout the first half, which had the scores tied at half time. The third quarter looked to be a repeat of the first two, but unfortunately for South, Kapunda were able to capitalise on the turnovers they created which had them going into the final quarter with a four goal advantage. South Gawler kept applying pressure, trying to create a turnover to level the scores but once again Kapunda’s experience shone through with them playing safe netball to maintain their four goal lead through to the final whistle.

President’s message BRIDEY LEWIS, President Barossa Light and Gawler Netball Association
The Barossa Light & Gawler Netball Association has again had a strong competitive season in all its divisions. The majority of games during the major rounds have been tightly contested and exciting to watch with some of the favourites being unexpectedly knocked out in the semis. Again, we see all nine clubs being represented in the Grand Final this year which is great for our Association. Games commence at 8.30 a.m. with our Sub-Junior 2 and 3s and the senior matches commence at 11 a.m. with Senior 7. There will be a delayed start of the Senior 1 match between Willaston and Kapunda with the game commencing at 3.15 p.m. This year we have had an abundance of talented umpires put their hands up for the finals. Thank you to all these umpires. Our standard of umpiring continues to improve and we thank our umpiring panel on assisting the Association with the selection of umpires for the finals. On behalf of the Directors of the BLGNA, we thank our major sponsors and all our partnership sponsors for supporting our competition this year. Finally, don’t forget the Grand Final is a huge day for the players, coaches, and supporters. Just remember to enjoy the day as making the Grand Final is a great achievement and a memorable one.
