Methamphetamine residue was discovered by 11 year old, Drae Bennett in the case of a PlayStation game last week. Mrs Sarah Bennett of Angaston purchased the PlayStation 3 game for her son from a Northern Suburbs second hand store last Thursday. “Usually I would just give the game and tell him to go and play it,” she explained. “This time I was just lucky Drae came to me with it before he touched it or anything.” Mrs Bennett was concerned with the checking system the store had in place. “They really need to make sure that everything is checked properly, you can’t just check to see if the disc is alright and nothing else,” she said. “We are probably not the first ones to have this happen to us.” The packet was found in the game manual last Friday, the day after the game was purchased. Sergeant Mick Casey of the Nuriootpa Police said the bag was likely to have been left in the case by a careless user. “The bag was empty apart from a bit of residue,” he explained. “After observing the substance it was believed to be methamphetamine, but we cannot confirm that without properly testing it. “The bag was nothing more than rubbish, they are found by police all of the time. “Nobody could have used anything that was left in the bag.” The second hand shop is going to launch an investigation of their own and gave Mrs Bennett a $150 voucher for her troubles. “Due to no harm coming to Drae, we decided not to take the case any further,” she said. “They are lucky to have got off so lightly. They aren’t being sued and nobody died. “I just really want to get the message out there to other parents that things like this can happen and to be vigilant. “The worst thing to come from it is I have now had to explain to my eleven year old son what methamphetamines are, something I didn’t want to have to do at this stage of his life.”

The Barossa Co-op’s new $10 million-plus shopping centre is a step closer following State Government development approval yesterday. The good news for the Barossa follows a development application lodged in July with the Department of Transport, Planning and Infrastructure and a three-month period of community consultation and comment. “It’s great to finally get the go ahead,” The Co-op’s Chief Executive, Mr Graeme Longmuir said. “The size of the project meant it had to go straight to the State Government, but we have had strong support from The Barossa Council and local community so we would have been surprised if it was not approved. “The only major objections were about traffic access on Murray Street and we have now revised our plans using a transport consultant to improve the entrances and exits for trucks and cars. “There had been some comment from neighbours about noise but our acoustic testing and reports assured them that by modifying the site fencing we can overcome any concerns.” Graeme commended The Barossa Council CEO, Mr Martin McCarthy on his support for the smooth transition of the development application as well as the Council’s elected members, who voted unanimously in favour of the project. He had also received encouragement and support from Senator Nick Xenophon, who visited The Co-op in September; local Member for Schubert Mr Stephan Knoll and a number of other State MPs from both sides of Parliament. “It has been very gratifying that everyone seems to be getting behind this major development for the Barossa,” Graeme said. “The Department has fast tracked development planning approval for a number of new retail and industrial complexes in the last three months as part of the State Government’s economic renewal agenda for SA, so clearly this support for the Barossa is positive. “We particularly want our 17,000 members to feel a strong sense of ownership of the new complex and the feedback and encouragement we are getting is very optimistic for the long term future of the 70 year old Co-op.” Commenting on recent rumors that an ALDI store will be part of the new development, Graeme confirmed that the planning application had included details of loading bay requirements suitable for the big national retailer.

“We would not be doing our due diligence if we did not include ALDI’s specifications in the application. “We don't want to pre-empt the planning tribunal’s decision at this sensitive stage, nor do we want to compromise any negotiations we are having with future tenants.

“It is essential to cover off every contingency when applying for planning approval,” The Co-op CEO, Mr Graeme Longmuir said on Tuesday. “Naturally we want to be considered by a range of national retailers and so we have made special provisions for a second supermarket as part of the plan.

An historic wine collection spanning the lifetime of a legend is set to be sold. Quietly aging gracefully in the personal cellar of the late Mr Peter Lehmann, the first lots of his wine collection, with vintages ranging from 19451976, have now been released by his wife Margaret and their two winemaking sons. “About two years ago Peter asked David and Philip what we should do about the cellar because there were significant quantities of wine in there,” Margaret told The Leader. She said that her sons had told their father, “It’s just too big for us Dad”. It was decided to engage the services of Jeremy and Heidi Holmes to catalogue, assess and sell the extraordinary collection which Peter had amassed over his career. “The thing I feel very happy and comfortable about is that Peter met with Jeremy and Heidi. He worked with Jeremy’s grandfather at Yalumba, knew Jeremy’s father, Leon... There’s a real connectivity which only happens in the Barossa. “They understand old wines, they are collectors and connoisseurs themselves. They disappeared down in the cellar for months...they’ve been meticulous. “Peter would be delighted that they are doing such a fantastic job,” Margaret said.

Co-op s $4.5m project

After a year of planning and generous donations from the local community, the time arrived for the installation of the Angaston/ Keightley town clock last week. Inclusive of all costs, the project needed $9,300 to be completed. During the 2015 Vintage Festival, the Angaston Garden Quilters helped also to raise the funds, amongst numerous other individual donors over the past year. “We’ve appreciated the donations received from numerous locals, the Keightley family and groups in the community,” said Dr Bill Gransbury, president of the Angaston and

Penrice Historical Society. “The clock is community owned.” The appeal was launched by pamphlet and through The Leader in 2014 under the name of the Angaston/ Keightley Town Clock Appeal, supported by the Angaston and Penrice History Society and The Angaston Management Group. The timepiece is Swiss made and electrically mechanised, with a LED illumination feature so it is clearly visible in the dark. It also features a timer, which will enable adjustment to daylight saving.

Plans for an Angaston town clock to be installed first arose over 100 years ago. In 1882 local resident, Mr A. Holloway wrote to the Angaston Council requesting the construction of a town clock. The government refused his request unless the locals could raise the funds, and unfortunately the plans failed. There once was a wind up clock on the Old Angaston Council chambers in Murray Street. In 1911 Douglas Stewart Keightley opened a watchmaker and jewellery shop at 47 Murray Street. He held an avid interest in the livelihood of the community, and was

Apex did about 34 years ago. “And as an aside, if anyone ever knocks that wall down they will not only see the concrete and stone but an amazing collection of brown glass botles that at one stage contained liquid refreshment designed to keep the wall builders hydrated as they constructed the wall. “Today we need to look at other projects and it may happen that a combined service club project could be undertaken, where one club does not have the capacity or funds to do a job, but by combining resources with another service club the project could be completed to the benefit of our community.”

As an active member of service clubs since he turned 18, Mayor Sloane said he is very proud of the amazing amount of work that service clubs have done and continue to do in our community and the lifelong friendships that are formed through service before self. He continued, “As Mayor of The Barossa Council, I am indebted on behalf of our community for the many hundreds of hours each year that you and your members and friends contribute to our community. “Those hours that you all give so freely to our community save our council thousands of dollars per year and, in many cases, allow facilities to be built and maintained and some services to exist.

In times when service clubs across Australia are struggling to attract new members, the Barossa based service clubs seem to be holding their membership levels reasonably well. But it is an unfortunate fact though that aging membership creates problems for our fundraising activities, claimed Mayor of The Barossa Council, Mr Bob Sloane, when he moved a toast to the combined service clubs of the Barossa Valley at the Sir Condor Laucke Oration held at the Vine Inn Barossa, Nuriootpa last Thursday. Mayor Sloane added, “We are no longer able to take on the major community projects like building a wall around the Mengler Hill lookout that

Tanunda Recreation Park are also hoping to put in a practice oval near the entrance of Bilyara Road and next to the Kegel Club. There is a planned extension of the grandstand which will became a United Sports Centre that is being planned to cater for all users of the oval. Geoff said that other sporting groups are also hoping to call Tanunda Oval home, with the Barossa Touch Football Club and Tanunda Hockey Club looking for a permanent ground. Extra facilities are planned but the funding and construction is still being considered by the Barossa Council. Outside the kegel club there is a planned seating area, with other ideas for narrowing down the bowling club space to accommodate extra car parking to lessen the stress on weekends. The committee is looking at adding more light towers so the oval can be used for night games such as football and cricket. Geoff also hopes that with the closing of Aami Stadium, they may be able to put in applications to receive the seating from the stadium that they would be able to use on the grounds. The new netball and tennis courts are finished but the surrounding landscaping and associated civil work is still to be completed in the next stage of the project.

The Tanunda Recreation Park is due for another round of upgrades costing an estimated $410,716 in the hope of reducing any risk at the Tanunda Oval. Mr Geoff Nicolai, Chairman of the Tanunda Recreation Park, said that it’s going to be a long work in progress to get all of the upgrades and funding for the oval. At the moment, the upgrades include removing dangerous trees that were planted in 1910 when the park was first established and replacing them with new trees. An arborist report suggested that some trees at the grounds are either unsafe or would most likely grow in a direction that could become dangerous. Along with planting, a disability ramp will be constructed to run onto the oval, which will allow more patrons to frequent the grounds. At the moment though, Geoff said one of the more important matters is getting the drainage fixed on the Tanunda Oval, which might be causing bigger problems in the coming season. Geoff explained that years ago a cement ring was put around the oval to accommodate a bicycle track but has since left a problem with the drainage. “With the drainage not being right, it becomes a big quagmire and it can become dangerous so that is the risk we are trying to reduce,” said Geoff. His son, Graham Keightley, who at the age of 96 still owns the building, had continued the family trade until his retirement in 1980. It was thought appropriate by The Barossa Council’s heritage adviser Mr Sam Hosking in conjunction with the historical society that the town clock be installed in the same place as the painted ‘clock’ had been for so many years.

Dr Bill Gransbury, President of the Angaston and Penrice Historical Society, is grateful for the generous community donations and volunteering that has allowed the installation of the Angaston town clock.

If a little cold, the rain held off for the majority of the events. The Vintage Festival continues to showcase all that the beautiful Barossa has to offer, as a surge of people have again been brought to experience local businesses this year. It has yet again proved to be an excellent community celebration, merging the rich Barossa heritage with the food, wine and art culture alive in the region today.

Another Barossa Airshow has flown by once again with extremely positive feedback from all who attended. Chairman and display organiser, Mr Steve Ahrens said of Sunday’s event, “It was brilliant and a very successful day. “So far, I have had lots of positive feedback from those who attended.” Steve said that with approximately 5,000 visitors, the day certainly presented one of, if not the best, attendance number in the show’s history. A day filled with sunshine and blue skies ensured that people were attracted to the airfield, located just outside of Rowland Flat. “It was really a perfect day to spend outside at the show,” said Steve. “I just want to thank the community for getting behind the event, and The Barossa Council for all of their help to make the day successful. “I also want to thank the St Jakobi School community for their workforce running the day, we wouldn’t have had such a successful day without them.” Whilst the numbers can not be yet confirmed for the total profits, it is safe to say that there will be a significant amount donated to this year’s nominated charity; Startlight Kids Foundation Australia. When the results are confirmed, a cheque will be handed over to the cause. There was something for everyone at the show, including vintage aircraft, The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Roulettes and the aerobatics. “Lots of people had different highlights,” said Steve. And fortunately, there was only one minor hiccup throughout the day’s proceedings. One of the pilot’s aircraft underwent some technical issues, and had to withdraw from the ‘air race’ due to safety concerns. Nevertheless, the race was deemed one of the highlights of the day, “It went really well, the authorities were happy with it and everyone loved watching.”

The Lyndoch Gemütlichkeit, running since 1977, had a run in with Mother Nature on Easter Monday. The festival Gemütlichkeit, which translates to “people gathered together to enjoy themselves”, found themselves in less than ideal conditions. Mr Bob Heinicke, committee member of the Lyndoch Gemütlichkeit Festival, said, “It was a cold and windy day but was an extremely good show enjoyed by 800 of an expected 2,500 people..” The wind was strong enough to blow away some of the marquees, but that didn’t stop everyone from dancing. The highlights of the festival were the three music attractions, which include The Borderers Celtic Band, The Barking Ants and Diana Scalzi. Bob said that The Barking Ants always have a good following in the Barossa while Diana was very well received because her style of music was so different. The Borderers also were well liked by the crowd who enjoyed the fusion of different genres in one. People at the event said the food and wine were the best meal presentations they had seen at the festival with many different varieties of food being showcased at the event. Bob said that even though the weather put a dampener on numbers, it didn’t stop the punters from enjoying themselves. “People were dancing around and on the veranda, it might have had something to do with the Barossa wine,” he said. Even though the attendance wasn’t as great as he would like it, he said there were still a bus full of people from Adelaide arriving and many other independent arrivals. “It was good to draw people from everywhere into the Barossa to showcase what we have down here.”

Barossa Police continue to search for the culprit behind a robbery at a Kapunda service station last week, as police presence in the town is highlighted. On The Run at South Terrace returned to trading early Thursday morning after a man wearing a balaclava and armed with a knife, threatened staff and fled with cash from the till just before 2 a.m. The robbery has prompted Kapunda businesswoman, Mrs Linda Carter to call for a greater police presence in the town. “Over the last few years the numbers appear to have dwindled but the town is growing,” said Linda. “It is ironic that we have a service station open 24 hours a day but not a police station.” While Linda acknowledges other country towns would be in a similar position and the local officers are covering a greater area, having a presence is important for safety. “Police are to be there to keep people safe,” said Linda. “If we had a bit more presence of police, we would have reassurance.” Kapunda has experienced changes to their policing in the past 12 to 18 months and Linda said an opportunity for them to be introduced would help. “Ninety per cent of the time you go there (to the police station) and it is locked,” said Linda. Barossa Police Chief Inspector Alex Zimmermann said Kapunda remains as a two person police station and reassures the Kapunda community that should a police presence be required when officers Senior Constable Mark Frankcom and Senior Constable Andrew Dredge are not on duty, then patrols will respond from Freeling, Nuriootpa or even Gawler. C/Insp. Zimmermann said he was keen to meet with Linda to gain a greater understanding of the concerns she may have. “Rest assured if you call for police, they will come but it may not be a Kapunda officer,” said C/Insp. Zimmermann. “Last week’s robbery aside, we are fortunate to have low crime and as such we are staffed according to the need.”

In my life I have had numerous escapes with death. However, if I had nine lives like a cat I think it must be close to the ninth life I lost last week. While reading Mr Mark Waechter’s story in the March 4 edition of The Leader, with his concerns about the Stockwell/Angaston Road intersection, I am certainly inclined to agree with his comments that the newly installed Give Way signs need to go and the Stop signs need to return. Last Wednesday around 3.10 I was returning to The Leader after a very successful day when all of a sudden a motorist travelling from Stockwell direction drove straight in front of me. Fortunately I was driving at around 70km/h at the time, so I braked heavily, sounded my horn and with the other hand activated the windscreen wipers. Being mentally alert probably helped quite a bit, as did an excellent braking system on my Suzuki Swift. As my vehicle came to a pretty rapid halt the other motorist continued on his path toward Vine Vale. I then drove slowly toward the Barossa Roadhouse parking area and took a few long breaths and a sigh of relief. On return to The Leader office and telling my story, various people began asking all kinds of questions like “Did you get the other driver’s registration plate?” and “What kind of car was it?”

“I have suggested moving the playground to the Village Green,” she said. “There are barbecue facilities, toilets and the shops are just across the road. “Everyone who I have talked to agrees it is the perfect place.” Tracy said netting would also be a good idea, as balls have been known to be hit on to the road, presenting a danger to unsuspecting cars. “It is different if you are watching the game, because you can see the ball coming towards you and have a chance of protecting yourself,” she explained. “But if you are on the playground, you aren’t really paying attention to the game and aren’t expecting balls to be flying into the area. “I really hope this issue isn’t just swept under the rug and forgotten about just because the cricket season is coming to an end.” Tracy’s husband, Ewen lodged a complaint to the Barossa Council and is awaiting a response. “I’m not against cricket at all and nobody is to blame for this incident,” said Tracy. “I just want a solution to make the playground to be a safe place for children.” President of the Lyndoch Cricket Club, Mr Jason Wickman is concerned with the incident and has talked to Tracy about it.

Mrs Tracy McInerney of Lyndoch is concerned for the safety of those who use the Lyndoch playground after she was hit in the head with a cricket ball. On February 28, Tracy’s daughter, Jade was having a birthday party at the playground. ‘There were about 17 other children, as well as a few adults,” she explained. “I was leaning over a chair to get some food when the ball hit me in the top of the head. “If it were a split second later it would have hit me in the face. “I’m just scared to think what would have happened if it was one of the kids, they would have ended up in hospital, or worse.” The following day, Tracy was still feeling light headed so she was taken to the hospital for testing. “The test results revealed that I was concussed,” she said. “I feel like this is a good warning of the existing hazard and that something needs to be done about it before someone is more seriously injured. “The worrying thing was, that wasn’t the only ball that came into the area. At least three or four balls landed on the full or after a bounce in the playground.” Tracy has suggested several ways the playground area can be made safer while sport is being played, including the location and netting.

Dicing with death

Tributes flow Tributes flowed for Lyndoch teenager, Ike Zerk after he died from a life-long heart condition while at football training.

By Tony Robinson In my life I have had numerous escapes with death.

The community rallied to support the family as they remember a real Barossa boy.

Nuriootpa Futures Association increased their drive to find a tenant for iconic Coulthard House. The community were keen to see the building remain a community asset.

He held an avid interest in the livelihood of the community, and was

involved in many local committees. On the parapet above his business he painted a clock, but unfortunately the fixed time of ‘8.30’ to advertise his profession was only correct twice a day.

Although work has been done through working bees and other initiatives, there are still improvements to be made for it to be tenantable and generate a realistic income to maintain the building. “We’ve done everything we can up to this point, there’s just no money left,” said Mr Linden. “If someone wanted to throw fifty grand

We could bring it back to what it is supposed to be and ultimately it would be more tenantable. “We’d love nothing more than for someone to come along with funds to protect it. It’s a beautiful old building and a sensational spot. It should be preserved as part of the history of this town... we don’t want to lose it.” Mr Linden knows the decision will disappoint people. “We’ve explained our situation and gave people the opportunity to come up with some options to help us through this ... the reality of it was that even some of its greatest stalwarts have basically said they understand the position you just have to do what you have to do,” he said.

Extensive community consultation has Today the Nuriootpa Futures Association releases its request for proposals for the future use and/or ownership of historic Coulthard House. President of the NFA, Mr Chris Linden, said the decision to release the official document was not taken lightly and comes after much discussion and community consultation. “The situation with Coulthard House has been a long, long time coming. We don’t really want to divest ourselves of it but we are left with no alternative,” Mr Linden told The Leader. “Just like anything, it has to be run as a business proposition and when income is considerably less than expenses, some action has to be taken. “It would be our preference to have a good solid, long term tenant but if it comes to pass that that’s not going to work and

Jenny’s caring career by Alicia Lüdi-Schutz There’s a caring, friendly face that will be sorely missed from the wards and corridors of Tanunda Hospital. After a nursing career spanning almost 50 years, Mrs Jenny Wood, of Nuriootpa has retired from a role that has touched the lives of innumerable Barossans over the decades. “I’m very thankful and feel very blessed to have had a working life that I have loved,” Jenny said. “I started in October 1965, that’s why I thought I would get out before they have to buy me a gold watch!” she joked. Admitting there were mixed emotions on her last day at Tanunda Hospital, the 66 year old mother of two said she had seen many changes in her profession, especially in education. “I did my training back in the day when training was more of an apprenticeship. I was a bit over 16 when I started at Tanunda Hospital, the hospital was only 12 years old at the time. “My father drove me six kilometres up the road to what’s now called Pfeiffer house, we all lived there. You had to live-in those days, but we loved it, we had fun.” After living and working for three years at Tanunda Hospital, Jenny transferred to the Royal Adelaide for two years to complete her training. “Because I was used to the whole country nursing thing, I thought I must go and do my mid, because that was considered part of being a nurse back then. “I went over to Melbourne to the Royal Women’s Hospital and did midwifery for a year.” On returning to the Barossa, Jenny phoned Matron Hage at Angaston Hospital and was offered a full time job which was 48 hours a week back then. She worked there until she and a friend decided to spend 1972 travelling and working overseas.

A footy match first In a first for the region, Tanunda and Willaston Football Clubs participated in White Ribbon Day by stretching huge banner across the oval before the A-Grade match. Players, coaches, trainers and umpires pledged never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.
