EDITOR’SNOTES ‘Don’t Use a Torque Wrench for That!’ Common Sense Tool Advice Can Still Be Insightful A comment my husband, Tim, recently made while we were doing yard work at my mom’s was simple, but struck me as profound, “You’ve got to have the right tools, hun.” My garden shears and rake paled in comparison to his backpack leaf blower, tractor and shovels of every sort. Our two days of yard work with the right tools netted an amazing amount of completed work, which Mom and I never would have accomplished without Tim and his turbo-charged lawn and garden equipment. Obviously, having the right tools is nothing new to you as a shop owner or technician, however, sometimes it’s hard to know what to buy or how to figure if a tool will deliver your return on investment. So, when it comes to specialty tools or expensive diagnostics, how do you choose what to buy? While doing some research for this month’s issue of TechShop, I found an AVI video featuring Bob Pattengale (see page 17). In it, Bob says that while you’ll be hard-pressed to find a diagnostic tool that will service all makes and models, it will help if you decide which vehicle makes you most work with or would like to focus on to help you choose which tool will be right for you. Again, simple but astute advice.

Fatherly Advice Since this is our June issue, and in the spirit of Father’s Day, the other day at the office, I asked Andrew Markel — the editor of Brake & Front End, Underhood Service and Servicio Automotriz, and in addition to all of that has written multiple articles for TechShop — about the tools his father has recommended to him. Andrew’s dad, Gene, is a retired

trainer for General Motors. Over the years, Gene has shared his knowledge with Andrew, including some that’s common sense, some insightful and some funny: “It is in the book!” — This is advice passed down from previous Markel generations about looking up repair information instead of asking another technician. “You can never have too many hammers or pry bars.” “Never scrimp on screwdrivers.” “You lost another 10 mm socket?” “Don’t use a torque wrench for that!” and “Make sure you have all your tools before you shut the hood.” A little common sense, your expansive technical knowledge, some help from Dad, and, of course, the right tools will bring you your best return on your investment. T

his article will document code P0301 — Misfire Activity on Cylinder No. 1 — a code many of you have run into, but sometimes we have case studies that are worthy of mention. Our subject vehicle is a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer. The vehicle has a P0301 stored in its memory. The lead tech working on this vehicle has determined that there is a mechanical issue with cylinder no. 1. Figure 1 shows the engine configuration for your review. Misfire codes have become the most challenging codes because they involve very careful review today vs. many years prior. I would like to offer a suggested plan of attack on this vehicle. We will start our game plan by first looking at the scan data. It is suggested to look at the pre- and post-oxygen sensor activity and note what is happening. Our subject vehicle has good switching activity on the pre-oxygen sensor, indicating that the vehicle is in fuel control, but we noted that the postoxygen sensor has a slightly higher than normal voltage value, implying that this Mountaineer may have a tendency to run slightly rich. The next step is to review the fuel trim values. This vehicle’s fuel trims show fairly low values, suggesting that the misfire activity may be ignition related. This, of course, must be proven.

Let’s review our process for success: 1. Review pre- and post-oxygen sensor activity. 2. Review fuel trims (short term and long term). The total correct will be their summation. If the fuel trims are not very significant in value, the problem is possibly ignition related; if the fuel trims are significant in value, the problem is possibly fuel related.

3. You must then perform a mechanical analysis to see if the vehicle is mechanically sound. This will help rule out any mechanical issues. 4. After confirming there are no mechanical issues, you will check for an ignition- or fuel-related failure based on the fuel trim and oxygen sensor data. Figure 2 is a pictorial showing the fuel trims and oxygen information from the Mountaineer. The scan data on this vehicle appears to be good; there were no signs of adverse activity other than the P0301 code that was set in the PCM’s memory. See Figures 3 and 4. After the above data was obtained, we took a look at the mechanical integrity of the engine. Pico Scope software was used to get data quickly; Figures 5 and 6 show what we obtained. The mechanical test per the Pico Scope software showed that the mechanical integrity appears to be OK, it is now fair to mention that the cylinder head on bank 1 was sent out to a machine shop to evaluate. A cranking vacuum test shows some interesting activity. If one were to start at where the ignition

8 June/July 2014 | TechShop

event for cylinder no. 7 starts as indicated by the arrow in Figure 6, this is the vacuum pull (intake event) for cylinder no. 5. The next series of intake events occur in the following order. Please note the aggressive downward spike, this is the vacuum pull for cylinder no. 3. It shows this behavior because the cylinder just prior to it is cylinder no. 1, which is misfiring. Cylinder no. 1 has slowed down due to the misfire activity, when cylinder no. 3 is not its intake event, this cylinder speeds up. If you label the first vacuum pull as no. 5, you would then follow the firing order to label the rest. The sequence would be as follows: 5-4-8-1-3-7-26. The generic scan data shows we have good oxygen sensor activity and low fuel trim values. The fuel trim values were +8 for bank 2 and +4 for bank 1. This implies that this may be ignition related. A review of the ignition system on this vehicle shows it to be a coil-on-plug system. All of the coils on bank 1 were scoped to get an idea of the ignition activity on this bank. Please review Figures 7 and 8 on page 10.

6,8,10 Pulling Codes 6/6/14 11:35 AM Page 10

PULLING CODES Figure 9 is the picture we obtained for cylinder no. 1 on ignition. The next step is to swap the coils between cylinders 1 and 3. We swapped the coils and found that there was no change. We then decided to swap the spark

plugs between cylinders 1 and 3 and found that the miss followed where we placed the bad spark plug. The coil connector was checked for a good feed and ground circuit as well. It is not clear per the pictorial, but on the good coil firing (cylinder no. 3) we have an input voltage of 14.7 volts. The input voltage for cylinder no. 1 is 12.3 volts; there is a voltage drop in the circuit indicating that additional resistance was in the circuit in addition to the bad spark plug firing. I then asked the tech to scope the other bank to obtain more information and we found a bad spark plug firing on cylinder no. 5; this had not been identified by the PCM as an issue yet. The final conclusion that we have drawn on this is to make sure to check feeds and grounds to the coil connectors, be sure to use the correct spark plugs and scope the coil firings to make sure the job is complete. This Pulling Codes case is now solved. TS

PROGRAMMERS

Why it will become your go-to tool in the future for repairs.

I

n the first half of 2014, NHTSA has issued more than 15 recalls where the fix was to reflash a module on a vehicle. In the same time frame, more than 100 TSBs have also been issued where the solution is to reflash a module. These recalls and TSBs cover a wide variety of problems from brake wear to battery drain. These updates aren’t just for cars that are still under warranty. A lot of the TSBs are for vehicles that are past warranty and resolve problems occurring on vehicles that have accumulated miles and wear and have seen conditions not anticipated by the automaker. These are not fixes they intend the dealer to do for free. This is why you cannot ignore reflashing any longer (if you have been). Developing the in-house capability is critical for productivity and customer retention. Below are seven tools you need for reflashing as well as eight problems that can be resolved by reflashing.

7 TOOLS YOU NEED TO REFLASH 1. Computer Purchasing and setting up a PC can be the most difficult part of reflashing. Most OEMs require a Windows-based PC with specific hardware, operating system requirements and user settings. Most OEMs specify Vista and Windows 7. Some systems specify that the system be 32- or 64-bit versions of Windows. Make sure to read all of the OEMs’ recom-

14 June/July 2014 | TechShop

mendations for the largest volume of vehicles you plan to reflash. The computer should only be used for reflashing and navigating OEM websites. 2. Internet Connection You must have a stable Internet connection to reflash modules. You can’t download a vehicle reflash file at home and install it when you get to the shop. The PC must remain connected to the Internet during the entire procedure or the module could be damaged. If your Wi-Fi is unstable, use a LAN/ethernet connection. 3. J2534 Pass-Thru Programmer A J2534 pass-thru programmer is a box and/or cable able to connect the PC to the vehicle and communicate with the correct pins on the OBD II connection. It is an interface that acts as a gateway that translates the messages back and forth between the PC and controller into a protocol that is understood by the vehicle. Most reflashing methods require the use of the four pins in the DLC that are open to the manufacturer. 4. Voltage Supply Some reflash sessions can last more than 45 minutes. If the battery voltage drops below a set voltage, the

PROGRAMMERS reflashing process will stop and possibly damage the module. Voltages are changing and can vary from 12 to 14 volts. Check the OEM’s website for information. Note: Your old battery charger should not be used. There are battery chargers/power supplies made specifically for reflashing that can deliver the correct voltage and amps during the procedure. 5. Advanced Scan Tool Your scan tool should be the equivalent to the factory tool or better. Your scan tool must be able to read Calibration Verification Numbers (CVN) and Mode $09 data. It should also be able to perform certain relearn and recalibration procedures. 6. Subscriptions You will need to subscribe to the OEM’s service information website. Subscription fees vary by OEM and have several payment options. Make sure you write down the logins and passwords. Before you start reflashing, take time to register and navigate the OEMs’ websites. Bookmark important pages on the sites. 7. Time You will not be able to perform flash reprogramming straight out of the box. It takes time to set up the computer and register at the OEM websites. On a slow day, take some time to experiment on shop vehicles. Nothing is worse than having to wait for a verification email from an OEM to start up a subscription. Learn before you burn. Reflashing procedures take time.

8 VEHICLE PROBLEMS SOLVED BY REFLASHING 1. Carbon Buildup on Direct Injection Engines: New reflash programming can help stop carbon buildup better than any fuel additive on some vehicles. New software can reduce carbon deposits by reducing the exposure of the valves to conditions that cause carbon buildup by adjusting valve and spark timing. Don’t assume that you will find a TSB saying that a reflash of the ECM will correct a carbon buildup problem because most of the updates will be contained in normal housekeeping calibrations that may never say anything about a problem. You may even have to check the OEM’s website to see if the vehicle has the latest version of the software. 2. P0420 Converter Efficiency Codes: If you have a car with a converter efficiency code in your shop coming back even after oxygen sensor and converter replacement, it can be frustrating. The long-term solution might be reflashing.

16 June/July 2014 | TechShop

Most converters start out at about 99% efficiency when new and quickly taper off to about 95% efficiency after 4,000 miles or so of driving. As long as efficiency doesn’t drop off more than a few percentage points, the converter will do a good job of cleaning up the exhaust. But if efficiency drops much below 92%, it will usually turn on the MIL. New programs can decrease the sensitivity drops in efficiency that may be caused by monitors that are too sensitive for the real world. Also, some of the reflash TSBs require the installation of an updated oxygen sensor the new reflash software is calibrated for. 3. Oil Consumption: If you have a customer complaining that they are adding oil often, the solution may be to reflash the ECM and not rebuild the engine. Almost every vehicle with cylinder deactivation can benefit from a reflash update. Honda and GM have issued TSBs recommending reflash of the ECM to solve oil consumption problems on vehicles with cylinder deactivation. The new programming changes the valve timing so excessive vacuum is not created on the combustion stroke that can suck oil into the rings. 4. Brake Wear Problems: Have a vehicle that is wearing rear pads faster than the fronts? The solution could be reflashing the ABS module. Ford and Honda have solved brake wear issues by reflashing the ABS module and implementing new pad formulations. Many OEMs use electronic brake force distribution or EBD to dynamically change the brake bias using the ABS modulator. EBD eliminates the need for proportioning and combination valves. It can also change the bias as the drive slows down to prevent a nosedive. New software updates the behavior to maximize pad life. 5. Transmission Problems: Have a customer with transmission problems like slipping, shift flare or poor shift quality? The solution could be a reflash. With five-, six- and even nine-speed automatic transmissions, the shift behavior is regulated with more sensors and solenoids than ever before. Reflashing new calibrations for the transmission can solve shifting and even wear issues without having to rebuild the transmission. Many OEMs are issuing new calibrations to account for wear to the bands and clutches that they did not see in their initial testing. 6. Battery Drains: If you get that vehicle that has an intermittent battery drain that can’t be detected during normal diagnostics, look for a TSB that might include a reflash. With most modern vehicles, the vehicle doesn’t completely shut down when the key is removed from the ignition. Some modules will stay awake and even wake up while the car is sitting overnight. If a module

14-19 Programmers 6/6/14 11:33 AM Page 17

or system doesn’t shut down or doesn’t receive the correct information from a sleeping module, it can stay awake and drain the battery. These problems can be extremely intermittent and frustrating to solve, but a check of the TSBs and latest calibration can save your shop and the customer time and money. 7. Component Replacement: If you’re installing a new module, you’ll have to flash it with the correct program to complete the repair. Some modules have switchable PROMs or come already programmed, but these are becoming the exception and not the norm. 8. ABS Problems: A common theme of some recent TSBs has been the performance of the ABS modulator. The majority of these TSBs are about the sensitivities of the system so the customer will not notice lowspeed activation or a self-test when the vehicle reaches 5-10 mph. TS
