Daimler’s Bernhard talks trucking future at HDMA breakfast “The U.S. trucking industry is the backbone of the world’s largest economy,” began Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Trucks and Buses, at Friday morning’s HDMA Breakfast and Briefing. “Trucking is transporting 9.2 billion tons of freight per year, around half-a-billion companies are working in this industry and 6.8 million people work in this industry. It’s an important part of our economy and when the economy grows we know that trans-

moving forward. Fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) standards were also a major theme at the morning’s breakfast briefing. Bernhard stressed the importance of setting emission standards that are also profitable for OEs. Now that setting the standards for GHG phase 2 is under discussion, Bernhard stressed that “We need to follow the full vehicle standard—paying attention to everything that is on the vehicle.” But Bernhard cautioned, “If the EPA goes beyond

portation will grow with it.” Bernhard shared Daimler’s view of trucking. He shared that GDP growth is expected to be around 3%, with growth in trucking estimated up to 10% for this year. Yet, Bernhard was optimistic that growth could surpass 10% for the year, based on Daimler’s promising order intake. Much of the current demand is coming from small and medium fleets, as well as rental, according to Bernhard. He stated that rental growth is a sign that there is freight transport work to be done, but that some might not trust the latest truck technologies and rent before investing in new products. The U.S. trucking market remains the most sophisticated trucking market in the world, according to Bernhard, as many truck purchases are in tune with new technologies and data that keeps their businesses

what customers will pay for, we are doing it wrong,” he said. Another aspect of improving fuel efficiency is improving our country’s roads. Bernard said the industry needs to encourage legislation to work to improve road surfaces and lobby for better infrastructures that reduce road congestion that forces trucks to sit in traffic with engines idling. When asked about future alternative fuels, Bernhard responded, “My alternative fuel of choice is diesel, and I don’t see anything replacing it in the near future.” Despite the recent interest in natural gas, it is not the solution for long haul operations at this time, but it will remain a viable option for fleets urban delivery with central fueling. Currently, there are 200 times more diesel fueling stations versus natural gas, which is also an issue. The Mid-America Trucking Show Daily

SAF-HOLLAND introduces auxiliary steerable lift axle suspension system SAF-HOLLAND announces the introduction of its 13.5k capacity, NEWAY LSZ Auxiliary Steerable Lift Axle Suspension System. With a 17.5-in. package size, the LSZ’s revolutionary design is a minimum of 4 in. up to 10 in. shorter than comparable lift axles. This rugged, yet compact, design offers customers application versatility, enables easy installation and service and provides extra frame rail space for component packaging and options. The Super Chamber lift on the LSZ outperforms traditional air springs by providing a quick and reliable four-second lift speed. This unique design is more durable than competitive lifts and provides a stronger and more consistent lift force that keeps the axle securely stowed. The Super Chamber position provides increased

protection from road hazards and easier access for servicing. The LSZ’s rolling lobe air springs are positioned at an angle, delivering a superior spring rate for increased stability and ride quality. Its parallelogram design maintains precise steering geometry while reducing tire wear. The rugged design utilizes a kingpin assembly with spherical bearings, which eliminate thrust bearings that often require shimming and reaming. As a result, service requirements are greatly reduced. Goodyear names 31st Highway Hero A truck driver who rescued another trucker who had fallen from a burning tanker truck that was hanging over the side of a freeway overpass has been named the 31st Goodyear Highway Hero. Chosen from four finalists, Ivan Vasovic of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., accepted the 31st Goodyear North America Highway Hero Award yesterday in front of media. Vasovic was in his truck in Los Angeles last October when he witnessed a double tanker truck hit the concrete divider of a freeway overpass, careen off a wall and slam into a guard rail. Its tanks, which were full of diesel, ripped open and the truck came to a stop with its tractor and first tanker hanging over the side of the overpass. The truck’s driver was trapped inside when the diesel ignited. The driver, now on fire, kicked out a window, slid down the truck and fell to the ground, breaking an arm and leg. By that point, the suspended truck was engulfed in flames with black clouds of smoke billowing from it. Vasovic and another bystander tried to pull the injured driver to safety. However, due to the intense heat, they could only drag him a few yards at a time. Vasovic dashed back to his truck and poured water on himself, which enabled him to drag the badly injured driver 20 yards away from his original position. Moments later, the entire burning tanker truck crashed to the ground.

Ivan Vasovic (right) was named Goodyear’s 31st Highway Hero Award for resucing a fellow truck driver.

“Ivan’s quick thinking and brave actions saved a fellow truck driver from a life-threatening situation,” said Gary Medalis, marketing director of Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems. As the 31st Goodyear Highway Hero Award winner, Vasovic receives a special Highway Hero ring, a $5,000 prize and other items. “I am very thankful to everyone,” said Vasovic. “I appreciate that someone recognized this. I didn’t expect this at all.” Other finalists include: Brian Dunn, a driver from Knoxville, Tenn; Tim Horton, a driver from Sheridan, Ark.; and Scott Rosenberg, a driver from Isanti, Minn. SFSS has developed medically sound and cost effective sleep apnea testing procedures and treatments for truck drivers. It uses the Watermark Ares home sleep testing device, which meets the same criteria as those used in traditional sleep labs. This simple and effective sleep study can be performed in the comfort and privacy of a driver’s own home or truck cab. Drivers no longer need to report to a sleep lab where interrupted sleep or sleeping in an unfamiliar bed or environment could affect the outcome of a sleep study. Sleep studies are evaluated by a Board Certified Sleep Physician and if diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Safety First Sleep Solutions can provide drivers with the appropriate CPAP equipment, supplies and therapy. SFSS’s experience in sleep apnea testing and treatment spans over 30 years, the company said. SFSS offers affordable, low cost testing and treatment solutions for sleep apnea with sleep therapy experts available 24/7.
