Sono vivo e vegeto. Vuol dire che sono in perfetta salute. Ma se in questa frase inserisco un punto, tutto cambia, così. Sono vivo. E vegeto. Ecco. Un semplice puntino. Ed il senso è totalmente un altro. Anche nel design esistono i punti, le virgole, i trattini. Sono le giunzioni, gli angoli, i cambi di inclinazione, le interruzioni della superficie, le curvature, gli stacchi fra un materiale e l’altro. Quando ho interpretato questi tavoli (o scrivanie, fate voi), ho pensato di togliere loro quanta più punteggiatura possibile. È soprattutto il taglio del laminato a creare questo effetto. Piano e gambe sembrano così diventare una cosa sola, un’unica frase fluida. E il tavolo (o scrivania), pur nella sua forma più elementare, assume un senso nuovo. Sono scrivanie, insomma (o tavoli), semplici. Ma pronunciati tutti d’un fiato.

I’m alive and kicking. Which means I’m in perfect health. But if I put a dot in this sentence, everything changes, like so: I’m alive. And I’m kicking. You see? A simple dot, and the meaning changes completely. You find dots, commas and dashes in the world of design, too. They’re the joints, the corners, the inclination’s changes, the breaks in a surface, the curves, the separations between one material and another. When I interpreted these tables (or desks, if you like), I thought I’d remove as much “punctuation” as possible. Above all, it’s the cut of the laminate that creates the effect. Tabletop and legs thus become a single item, a sole flowing phrase. And even in its simplest form, a table (or desk) takes on new meaning. In short, they’re simple desks (or tables). But they’re all said in a single breath.

Ich glaube dir, nicht aber ihr. Wenn ich in diesen Satz anstelle des Kommas einen Punkt einfüge, sieht alles ganz anders aus, nämlich so: Ich glaube dir nicht. Aber ihr. Bitteschön. Ein einfacher Punkt. Und der Sinn ist ein ganz anderer. Auch im Design gibt es Punkte, Kommas, Bindestriche. Sie sind die Verbindungen, die Ecken, die Änderungen von Neigungen, die Unterbrechung von Oberflächen, die Rundungen, die Übergänge von einem Material zum anderen. Als ich diese Tische (oder Schreibtische, ganz wie sie wollen) interpretierte, war es meine Absicht, so viele Satzzeichen wie möglich wegzulassen. Es ist vor allem der Schnitt des Laminats, der diesen Effekt schafft. Tischplatte und Beine scheinen ein einziges Ganzes zu bilden, einen einzigen, flüssigen Satz. Und der Tisch (oder Schreibtisch) nimmt auch in seiner elementarsten Form einen neuen Sinn an. Es handelt sich um einfache Schreibtische (oder Tische). Aber in einem Atemzug aus gesprochen.
Living
Está fuerte como un toro. Quiere decir que goza de perfecta salud. Pero si en esta frase introduzco un punto, todo cambia, de esta forma. Está fuerte. Como un toro. Así es. Un simple puntito. Y el sentido cambia completamente. También en el diseño existen los puntos, las comas, los guiones. Son las uniones, los ángulos, los cambios de inclinación, las interrupciones de la superficie, las curvaturas, los contrastes entre uno y otro material. Cuando he interpretado estas mesas (o escritorios, según les parezca), me he propuesto quitarles todos los signos de puntuación posible. Es sobre todo el corte del laminado lo que crea este efecto. De esta forma el tablero y las patas parecen un único elemento, una única frase fluida. Y la mesa (o escritorio), aún en su forma más elemental, adquiere un nuevo sentido. Son escritorios (o mesas) sencillos. Pero pronunciados de una sola vez.
