Arden Theatre Company’s 20th Anniversary Season Arden Theatre Company’s 20th Anniversary Season was a celebration of storytelling. Over the past twenty years, we have developed a unique aesthetic, producing daring musicals, new American plays and world-class theatre for adults and children. Our plays reverberate with a passion for compelling stories, and we share this passion by presenting works that celebrate community. In turn, we have created a vibrant community of our own, and we are proud to share the highlights of this past season.
Mission Statement Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers. We draw from any source that is inherently dramatic – fiction, nonfiction, poetry, music and drama. The Arden presents programs for the diverse Philadelphia community to arouse, provoke, challenge, illuminate and inspire.

Artistic Achievements The 2007/08 season was marked by extraordinary work by some of our most valued artistic collaborators. We honored our ongoing relationship with Michael Hollinger by presenting a new production of An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf, a play that premiered at the Arden in 1995. Our holiday production of Sleeping Beauty was directed by Whit MacLaughlin, whose work for Arden Children’s Theatre has been acclaimed for its vivid theatricality and imagination. We made a concerted effort to expand our pool of directors and welcomed several new collaborators including former Artistic Director of Freedom Theatre Walter Dallas (The Piano Lesson); up-and-coming Philadelphiabased artist and 2008 F. Otto Haas Award recipient Matt Pfeiffer (Go, Dog. Go!); and Utah Shakespeare Festival’s Associate Artistic Director J.R. Sullivan (Wittenberg). Their work enriched our season by bringing us new artistic influences and perspectives. Last season, we produced the world premiere of Wittenberg by David Davalos, our 28th world premiere. The production received an inaugural Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award and Davalos was named the winner of the 2008 Barrie and Bernice Stavis Award for an emerging American playwright. Under the auspices of the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase, the Arden workshopped two new plays, Something Intangible by Bruce Graham and My Name is Asher Lev, adapted by Aaron Posner from the novel by Chaim Potok. These workshops were so successful that both plays will be produced as part of our 2008/09 season. Both Asher Lev and Something Intangible received Edgerton Foundation Awards, making the Arden the only theatre in the country to win two awards for world premiere plays in the same season. We closed the season with Our Town in Old City, a celebration of our community. Featuring the largest cast in the theatre’s history, the production was performed on the Haas stage and also next door in historic Christ Church. Throughout the run, 36 community choirs and 106 special guests were featured as part of the production. Another high point of the season was the Off-Broadway premiere of Michael Hollinger’s Opus at Primary Stages. Directed by Arden Producing Artistic Director Terrence J. Nolen, the play had its world premiere at the Arden in 2006. The production was a triumph for Michael Hollinger and the Philadelphia artists involved, furthering the Arden’s reputation as a hotbed for new play development.

Education and Community Outreach Milestones The Arden’s commitment to sharing great stories includes sharing our work with as many people as possible. We expanded our outreach programs during the 2007/08 season by distributing nearly 5,000 free tickets to Arden performances through Arden for All, our ticket access program. The program benefits underserved populations including students, seniors and people with disabilities who also take advantage of our accessible building, large print programs, assisted listening devices and captioned performances. Our school “in-reach” program, Arden in Class and on Stage (AICOS) provided free tickets to Arden Children’s Theatre productions, show-related books and in-school visits from the Arden’s teaching artists. The AICOS program reached 3,480 children in the Philadelphia, Camden and Ridley Park School Districts during the 2007/08 season. The Arden continued its annual residency program at the Camden Creative Arts High School (CAHS). Drama students at CAHS attended five Arden shows free of charge and received five professional-level workshops at their school from renowned local artists including playwright Michael Hollinger, puppeteer Aaron Cromie and director Walter Dallas. In the fall of 2007, the Arden’s work on stage and in the community was rewarded with an exciting new grant. The Arden was one of ten cultural organizations in Philadelphia honored with a Wallace Foundation
Excellence Award. This four-year capacity-building grant allowed the Arden to launch Arden Drama School, an exciting expansion of classes and programming for older children. With this expansion, Arden Drama School will offer an increased array of Kids Crew programming – classes and camps for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. We will also introduce the brand new Arden Teen Company – programming for theatre students in middle and high school. All of these offerings are contained under the umbrella program called Arden Drama School. The mission of Arden Drama School is to engage children of all ages to deepen their connections to the joys of live theatre. The hopes are twofold: the Arden strives to build future audiences by building bridges between children’s theatre and mainstage productions. We also hope to foster children’s appreciation and participation in all art forms. As part of the Wallace grant, the Arden hired a fulltime Education Director, Maureen Mullin Fowler, to oversee Arden Drama School and educational programming. Fowler brings a wealth of experience both as a Philadelphia school district teacher and as dean of students. She also created and ran her own arts education program for inner city youth called Curtain Call Creations.

The Arden’s Salon series continued to offer behind the scenes, no-holds-barred conversations with an array of theatre artists. Speakers during the 2007/08 Salon season included actors Tony Braithwaite, Grace Gonglewski and Tom McCarthy with topics ranging from tackling the musicals of Stephen Sondheim, to developing a character, to sustaining a long-term theatre career. Our Pay What You Can (PWYC) performances continued with great success. PWYC pairs the Arden with another community non-profit for the final dress rehearsal of each Arden mainstage play. These Pay What You Can benefit performances help broaden our audiences, raise money for worthy non-profit partners and provide many people access to our shows regardless of their ability to pay. Since the inception of the program in the 2000/01 season, 40 area non-profits have received over $35,000 in contributions.
Through the Arden Professional Apprentice (APA) program, the Arden has trained approximately 100 future theatre professionals. The APA program is considered one of the best theatre internships in the country and our hands-on training has given young theatre enthusiasts the skills they need to be future industry leaders. Former apprentices have had a profound impact on the national cultural community and hold leadership positions in Philadelphia at the National Constitution Center, the Philadelphia Fringe and Live Arts Festival and the Wilma Theater.

20th Anniversary Events Our 20th Anniversary Season was an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate past accomplishments. Highlights included a reading of the Arden’s 1996 acclaimed production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, reuniting the original cast, including Barrymore Award-winner Tom McCarthy as Willy Loman. We also presented a cabaret performance featuring an evening of songs from past musical favorites. In honor of our 20th Anniversary Season, the Arden was presented a challenge grant by The 1976 Foundation Fund to encourage increased individual giving. During the run of Assassins, cast members asked audiences to make a gift of $20 after each performance, raising over $39,000. The Challenge served as a catalyst for a new program, the Honorary Producers Circle, which raised an additional $60,000. By the end of the campaign, we raised $235,000 in new and increased gifts from individuals, far exceeding the challenge goal of $150,000 and resulting in a $100,000 grant from the Fund. We returned to our home in Old City for our biennial Granfalloon gala. On a beautiful spring evening in June, more than 275 guests toasted the Arden and enjoyed dining and dancing throughout the building and in the fabulous Filbert Street party tent. Thanks to Granfalloon Honoree, J. William Mills, III of PNC Bank as well as Honorary co-chairs Edward G. Rendell, Governor, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Gerry Lenfest. Co-chairs Harvey and Virginia Kimmel and Special Events Committee Chair Ronna F. Hall helped ensure the Granfalloon’s success, raising nearly $125,000 for our artistic and educational programs.
