WELCOME From the Producing Artistic Director Since last we gathered in person, we have been busy. We streamed past Arden productions of Next to Normal, My General Tubman, and A Year with Frog and Toad. We created a radio play version of 74 Seconds to Judgment, digital cabarets featuring Robi Hager, Joilet Harris and Mary Martello, and a filmed version of No Child featuring a tour de force performance by Taysha Marie Canales. We painted the lobby and refinished the wood floors, renovated the Actor House where visiting artists stay while working here, created a library to be named in honor of Arden friend and Philadelphia theatre critic J. Cooper Robb, and updated our ventilation systems – including installing a new, state of the art HVAC system in the theatre in which you are now sitting. This past fall, we created a wildly creative film version of The Snowy Day & Other Stories by Jack Ezra Keats as this year’s Arden Children’s Theatre offering and, throughout the entire pandemic, we have continued to work with our partner classrooms through our Arden for All education program, doing so virtually last year and in-person at our 100 partner classrooms starting this school year. Plus – we held our annual Teen Arden College & Career Fair; an on-line version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream featuring recent college students and grads; workshops of new plays by Robert Christophe, Glen Alan and R. Eric Thomas, both on Zoom and in-person; and posted online songs and activities for kids and their families. Throughout this entire time, a ghost light (a single electric light that is left energized on the stage when a theatre is unoccupied) sat on this set for A Streetcar Named Desire, waiting for you to return. Thank you for your extraordinary support over these past two years. For your inspiring generosity and incredible patience, the kind words and encouraging emails, and for your counsel and unwavering commitment. There are so many people who have gone above and beyond to ensure that this theatre stays strong – including our brilliant Board of Directors led by the indefatigable Bob Elfant; the staff who met each new challenge with creativity and a willingness to go above and beyond; the artists who learned to create art in an ever-changing world, conquering digital realms and ever-shifting safety protocols; and our ardent supporters, subscribers and stakeholders who made sure that we would be prepared to meet the challenges at hand. To each and every one of you, thank you for believing so passionately in the future of this theatre. This continues to be a challenging time. We are not out of the woods yet and hopefully will be much more so by the time we go Into the Woods later this spring. But we are grateful for these times when we can gather. For nothing beats the power of live theatre to remind us of our connection to one another. We say it often, but we are truly grateful that you have continued to be part of the Arden. And if this is your first time here, welcome! We’ve been waiting for you.

From our Honorary Producers
I am delighted to act as an honorary producer, along with June and Steve, for the Arden’s production of A Streetcar Named Desire. It is a brilliant play whose underlying themes of classism, racism, homophobia and mental health are as pertinent today as they were in the mid-40’s. After a recent reading, I was struck by something Blanche says in Act III: “I don’t want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic! I try to give that to people. Misrepresent things to them. I don’t tell truth, I tell what ought to be truth. And if that is sinful, then let me be damned for it!—Don’t turn the lights on!” How tempting it is to believe what we wish to be true. To live in a fantasy world of our own creation, fueled by social media, and a 24 hour news cycle. The tragedy of this play makes clear that there is a healthier choice. Director's Note We had a first reading of A Streetcar Named Desire three years ago. The majority of the cast in this production were part of that reading. I knew the play well; we’ve done several readings of the script over the past twenty-five years as we considered producing the play. But what struck me at that reading was how Tennessee Williams’ play – this very American story – spoke to the political moment in which we found ourselves a year before a Presidential election. It was the story of a great divide – challenging us to examine how to reconcile the seemingly irreconcilable Three years later, that question still rages on, but others themes have emerged as well – the dread of loneliness and need for connection; how the past continues to push its way into the present; our capacity for both kindness and cruelty. Though I have spent so much time with this play over the years, there are lines I am hearing for the first time. And it is not lost on me that this is a story set in a small space as a family is on top of one another, unable to find refuge or release. That’s what great plays do – they reach out and speak to us where we are at this moment of our lives. Streetcar remains a story about that which divides us – in families and as a society – but there has been constant laughter and joy surrounding our exploration of this play over what has become three years. These artists have brought so much of themselves to this play, and I am in awe of their extraordinary commitment, passion and artistry. By revealing so much of themselves, they remind us what it means to be human. And they give me hope.

TENNESSEE WILLIAMS (Playwright, 1911-1983) Tennessee Williams wrote fiction and motion picture screenplays, but he is acclaimed primarily for his plays, nearly all of which are set in the South, but which at their best rise above regionalism to approach universal themes. Tennessee Williams drew heavily on his family experiences in his writings. When The Glass Menagerie hit Broadway in 1945, it not only changed Tennessee Williams' life, it revolutionized American theatre. A Streetcar Named Desire, The Night of the Iguana and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are some of his other masterpieces. Among his many awards, Williams won two Pulitzer Prizes and four New York Drama Critics Circle Awards. In addition to 25 full-length plays, Williams produced dozens of short plays and screenplays, two novels, a novella, 60 short stories, more than 100 poems and an autobiography. His works have been translated into at least 27 languages, and countless productions of his work have been staged around the world. TERRENCE J. NOLEN (Director, Producing Artistic Director) is Co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of Arden Theatre Company. Favorite Arden productions include all-Philadelphia casts of August: Osage County, Death of a Salesman, The Grapes of Wrath, and Hedda Gabler; and such musicals as Next to Normal, Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures, Violet, and Caroline, or Change. Terry directed the inaugural production of Arden Children’s Theatre, Charlotte’s Web. He has directed seven world-premiere plays by Michael Hollinger, three by Dennis Raymond Smeal, three by Michael Ogborn, two by Rogelio Martinez, and Bruce Graham’s Something Intangible. Amy has served on the Board of the Cultural Alliance and Theatre Philadelphia. Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College.
ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers–on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire ommunity through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people, and our Arden Arts Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for Arden Drama School classes and camps. The Arden has received twelve Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly” Awards, the Arts & Business Council’s Arts Excellence Award, six City Paper “Reader’s Choice” Awards, four Philadelphia Inquirer “Theatre Company of the Year” citations, 77 awards and 418 nominations from the Theatre Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, and was named “Best Theatre Company” by Philadelphia Weekly in 2009.
