WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
Welcome. This is the Arden’s 30th anniversary season – which means that we’ve been doing plays since 1988. This season also marks another anniversary – Arden Children’s Theatre is 20 years old. The Arden was around for 10 years before we began making plays for kids but, once we started, it’s been one of the most important things we do. One of the reasons these shows are so important is that for many Arden Children’s Theatre audience members, this is the first time they’ve seen live theatre. Because of that, we want it to be the best experience possible, and we work with the best actors and writers and designers we know. We want you to love our plays, and we hope that you will want to keep coming back to the theatre. Next year. And the year after. And, maybe, for your entire life. I was lucky. My mom took me and my brothers and sisters to see plays when I was a kid. And I LOVED them. I started making my own plays in the backyard with my friends. Then when I was 11, I got involved with a program for kids called Summer Stage, and I spent all day, every day each summer acting and tearing tickets and painting sets. Summer Stage was where I directed my very first show when I was 14 years old. And that show was Snow White, too. Not the Snow White you are going to see today; a different Snow White. That’s one of the great things about theatre, the same stories can be told in completely different ways. Today’s Snow White was written and directed by Greg Bank, a British playwright and director who has been working on this play for several years. The Arden is the first theatre doing Greg Banks’ Snow White, so you are among the very first kids in the world to see this show. That’s what we try to do: to have great people work really hard (and have a lot of fun) making plays just for you. Maybe someday you’ll write a play or be in a play or build the set for a play, but right now, sitting here as a member of the audience, you are an invaluable part of this production. Whether onstage, backstage, or in the audience, everyone plays a role in making live theatre happen. Thank you for being part of this world premiere of Snow White. DIRECTOR'S LETTER I was originally commissioned to write this adaptation of Snow White by The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis but was delighted when Terry Nolen asked me if I would like to direct this premiere production for the Arden. What’s been particularly exciting for me, as well as being a challenge, is being able to both write and direct this brand new version of Snow White. Although I say brand new, I have still attempted to be faithful to the central story which weaves its way through all of the various incarnations that have appeared over the years. I guess what gives my adaptation its own particular quality is that I was commissioned to write the piece for only two actors . . . My initial response was . . . "Help! Not possible! There are seven dwarves!" The reason for that decision was not just a whim on the part of the Children’s Theatre but came from my history of work with them since 2001, writing and directing adaptations of well known classic stories for small casts, some of which, including Pinocchio, Robin Hood, and The Jungle Book have been produced at the Arden. This is the first time I have directed one of my scripts here in Philadelphia. We are so used to the Disney versions of our favourite stories, that it's exciting to be given the opportunity to go back and re-read them in their original form; to see how dark some of them are, to realise that they often originated in times of great poverty, famine, or war. We know them as fairy tales, but they are much more than flights of fancy. They were always told as a way of making sense of the world in difficult times, and as I work on these stories, I try and hold true to that idea and not patronise a young audience but to speak to them honestly and openly about what happens in the world. At the same time, it's important that the telling of these stories is exciting, and working with a small cast and a simple set is just that. It requires a leap of faith, a complete suspension of disbelief, and huge amounts of imagination on the part of the actors and the audience. The very qualities that we made use of when we were young and trying to make sense of the world through our play, just as our children still do today. We’ve had enormous fun and serious challenges in telling this story, not least, figuring out how one actor can play all seven dwarfs at once . . . We think we’ve nailed it, but that will be for you to judge; even if you do get confused I hope you find plenty to enjoy! Greg Banks

Still based in the UK, his scripts have been performed throughout the States, where he has worked as guest Director/Writer at Minneapolis' Children’s Theatre since 2001 and directed his work at The Seattle Children’s Theatre. His production of Spirit Horse, commissioned by Roseneath Theatre in Toronto, has toured Canada extensively since 2010. Several of his scripts have been produced at The Arden including Robin Hood,The Jungle Book, and Pinocchio. This year, Greg is delighted to have been asked to also direct his brand new adaptation of Snow White.
Who’s Who CHRISTOPHER HAIG (Set Designer) A proud graduate and faculty member at the University of the Arts, Chris has worked professionally as a set and prop designer in Philly for 17 years. Currently, he is enjoying his 7th season as Props Master at Arden Theatre Company. He has designed sets and/or props for Theatre Horizon, 11th Hour Theatre Company, 1812 Productions, Tribe of Fools, Delaware Theatre Company, Mazeppa Productions, Plays & Players, Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company, Delaware Shakespeare Festival, and Simpatico Theater, including their production of Time Is On Our Side for which he received a Barrymore nomination for Best Scenic Design. He most recently designed the set of Love, Lies & Taxidermy for Inis Nua Theatre Company. Her next project is designing Catch-22 for Curio Theatre. ELISE D'AVELLA (Assistant Director) is a director, actor, and teaching artist based in Philadelphia. Since receiving her Masters from Villanova University in 2016, she has assistant directed for the Lantern Theatre, the Wilma Theatre, and Theatre Horizon. She has recently directed for Juniper Productions, Mz. Initiative, ReVamp Collective, Tieline Theatre, and her own company, Svaha Theatre Collective. She works as the resident teaching artist at Theatre Horizon and teaches yoga at various studios in the city. Up next, she will be co-directing As You Like It for Tieline Theatre. His short film The Personal Touch was nominated for an Emmy Award. AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terrence J. Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts. Amy has served on the Board of the Cultural Alliance and Theatre Philadelphia. She has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council, Theatre Communications Group and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College. Inside-Out Caramel Apples Enjoy this tasty treat that won't put you to sleep like the Queen's poison apple! Have a parent help you make this recipe to share with family and friends. Ingredients:
• 4-6 Granny Smith apples
• 2 cups caramel candies
• 2 tablespoons water
• Lemon juice
• Toppings like nuts, mini chocolate chips, toffee, etc. (optional)
Directions:
1. Unwrap caramel candies and place in microwave-safe bowl. Add water.
Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir. Microwave on high 1 minute more. Stir. If caramel is still not completely melted, microwave another 30-60 seconds then stir.
2. Slice apples in half. Brush cut sides with lemon juice.
3. Using a melon baller or small metal scoop, scoop out the insides of the
apple, leaving about 1/2-inch edge of apple all the way around. It doesn’t have to be perfect!
4. Scoop caramel into each hallowed-out apple
5. Let sit for about 1 hour to allow caramel to firm before you eat them.
(Note: if you allow caramel to harden in the fridge, it gets too hard. Recommend just letting the caramel firm up outside of the fridge.)
