When I choose a play, one of my first – and favorite – jobs is to think about what the dream team is for that particular production. Who is the best director; who are the best actors and designers to bring that play to life? With Rabbit Hole, this was easy. The first phone call I made was to director Jim Christy. Jim received the Barrymore Award for Lifetime Achievement several years ago. He worried at the time that this might send the message that he was ready to spend time looking back on his distinguished career. Have no fear. Jim is forging ahead – helming new productions here and across the country. The second call I made was to Grace Gonglewski, who leapt at the opportunity to play Becca (remarkably, her 20th role with us). Jim and I quickly put together the rest of our dream team. Artists love to work on great plays, and great artists were drawn to David Lindsay-Abaire’s beautiful Rabbit Hole. We have also been working to expand our artistic staff. I am thrilled to introduce two key additions to the Arden team. Edward Sobel has joined us as our Associate Artistic Director. Ed most recently worked as Director of New Play Development at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. While at Steppenwolf, Ed led the theatre’s new play efforts, including the development and subsequent Broadway production of August: Osage County – Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play. Most recently, Ed dramaturged Tracy Letts’ newest play Superior Donuts, again at Steppenwolf and then on Broadway. He is an experienced director (credits include a production of Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok’s The Chosen at Steppenwolf) and an educator, currently teaching directing and dramatic literature in the Department of Theatre at Temple University. He is also a great guy. I am confident that Ed will be a tremendous addition to the Arden and to the Philadelphia theatre community. We have also hired Matthew Decker as Associate Producer. Matt is the co-Artistic Director of Theatre Horizon, located in Norristown. Matt has worn many hats at the Arden over the past few years, including directing Arden Professional Apprentice Showcases in years past and assistant directing Assassins and Candide. He also served as the Associate Producer for Our Town, for which he coordinated the 36 community choirs and 108 special guests who participated in the run of that production. Matt has been a valued contributor to many Arden productions and projects, and we are pleased to welcome him to the Arden staff. Though we are still early in the 2009/10 season, we have begun to think about our productions for next year. We are workshopping new plays, inquiring into rights for possible projects, and dreaming up new dream teams. With the addition of Matt and Ed, we have new perspectives, passions and relationships to bring to the selection of our 2010/11 season. DIRECTOR’S Notes This heartfelt, literate and insightful play deals directly and intimately with that most universal of human states - mourning, specifically for the death of a young child. As a parent and grandparent, I cannot imagine a loss more painful than that of a little one taken away before the natural order.

Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire etches with extreme delicacy the stages and manifestations of grief in the everyday relationships between the two parents and with the mother’s family. Each is attempting to deal as sensitively and supportively with the others as possible, but the overwhelming sense of personal loss results in an inability to “be there” for each other. Such a loss is ineffable and there is simply no right way to be. Abaire imagines a unique break in this emotional logjam, through the “inappropriate” appearance of the hapless teenager who caused the tragedy. Abaire avoids any easy answers, but suggests that the awakening of feeling for another’s pain is a beginning. - James J. Christy

Updates from the Artistic Department Getting to Know Arden’s new Associate Artistic Director, Edward Sobel Arden Theatre Company is pleased to welcome Edward Sobel as Associate Artistic Director. Sobel previously was the Director of New Play Development at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, where he oversaw the development of more than 40 new plays including the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning drama August: Osage County. Sobel also developed the Pulitzer Prize finalists Red Light Winter and Man from Nebraska, and the Joseph Jefferson Award winner The Pain and the Itch. Ed’s Broadway credits as dramaturg include August: Osage County and the currently running Superior Donuts. At Steppenwolf, he also created and was the director of the First Look Repertory of New Work, a new play development program that readies new plays for future production at theaters across the country and provides unprecedented access to the development process for audiences. Sobel received the Elliot Hayes Award from the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas for outstanding contribution to the field for this program. Ed teaches directing and dramatic literature in the department of theatre at Temple University.

Welcome to Philly! Thanks. I actually got my undergrad degree here at Penn. After graduating, I taught Drama at Friends Select School. So my arrival in Philadelphia is a sort of homecoming. I remember the Arden, which was just getting started when I was a student, and now it’s reached such an admirable level of success. I’m really looking forward to becoming involved as the company continues to grow.

How do you feel about the move? I was in Chicago for 18 years. It’s a great city but it’s new and fresh to be on the East Coast. And Philadelphia is so historically significant. I love the thought of producing plays in the city where our country was born. That original promise of democracy still echoes. It’s exciting.

BY: ES:

What are your five favorite things about Philadelphia thus far? 1. Cheesesteaks 2. The Phillies and the Eagles 3. The sense of a theatrical community 4. Being near Baltimore, New York and DC 5. The history.

BY: ES:

Tell me about your new life. My wife, daughter and I have settled in Bala Cynwyd. My daughter’s 5 ½. This morning when I told her I was starting a new job at a theatre that does children’s work, she gave me two thumbs up and proclaimed, “that’s cool.”

That’s great; will you and your wife bring her to performances? She’ll be a regular at Arden Children’s Theatre, I think you can plan on that. My wife, Judith Levine, is also a theatre enthusiast. So now it can be more of a family affair.

What does your wife do? She’s a sociology professor at Temple. She’s working on a book right now about gender, poverty, equality and post-welfare reform.

How interesting! I imagine it’s fascinating to see a play with a sociologist! [Laughs] Yeah! She’s very smart; very interested in people and relationships. We usually have a lot to talk about during the ride home from performances.

ES: BY: ES:

What kind of theatre most interests you? I’m very attuned to new work. I’m compelled by playwrights who are thoughtful about social issues and by plays that capitalize on what live performance has uniquely on offer.

BY: ES:

Can you give me an example? Sure. Tony Kushner. I love his work.

BY: ES:

What’s your favorite play? Whatever play I’m working on at the moment.

What’s your theatrical dream? To find and produce the next great American drama.

For the past year he’s been volunteering his time to maintaining the welfare of animals on campus in PAW (Promoters of Animal Welfare) and off biking food and water over to an abandoned home now inhabited by a small community of stray cats who have been spayed and neutered. When Aaron isn’t promoting animal welfare, he’s soldering some new creative project, singing in Temple’s a cappella group “Broad Street Line”, or acting. Aaron’s been in Our Town directed by Dr. James J. Christy and would like to thank Dr. Christy’s wife, Francine and Mrs. Mary Anne Morgan for being such fulfilling vehicles in Aaron’s life, driving him as they did all their students towards the pursuit of excellence.

Who’s Who JULIANNA ZINKEL (Izzy) is so happy to be back at the Arden. She was recently seen locally as Una in Theatre Exile’s highly acclaimed production of Blackbird. NY: The Lover (Sarah) Regional: Wintertime (Ariel), As You Like It (Celia), Crime and Punishment (Sophia et. al.), Go, Dog. Go! (Blue)-Barrymore nomination, A Tale of Two Cities (Lucy), The Crucible (Abigail), Theophilus North (Eloise,Diana), The Miser (Elise). A proud member of People’s Light and Theater Company’s acting company, she performed the one-woman show Estro-Jen, by award winning writer Madi DiStefano for Brat Productions, dances with Workshop For Potential Movement, creates new work with Cult 12 and is on the evaluation committee for PlayPenn, a new play development conference. DONALD EASTMAN (Scenic Designer) designed last season’s A Year With Frog and Toad and is thrilled to return to the Arden for Rabbit Hole. Donald received a Barrymore Award for Outstanding Design and an OBIE Award for Sustained Excellence. Upcoming projects include Dialogues of the Carmelites for Juilliard and Falstaff for Seattle Opera. He has been chosen to design the entire 2010 season for Glimmerglass Opera. ALISON ROBERTS (Costume Designer) is in her tenth season as Arden’s Costume Supervisor. She has a BA in Theatre Arts from Rowan University and an MFA in Costume Design and Technology from Illinois State University. In addition to her staff position, she has designed costumes for numerous Arden productions. Just last month she designed The History Boys and will be designing Blue Door in January. You can also see her freelance design work with Theatre Exile and Act II Playhouse this season. Many thanks and love to her Arden family and her 4th St family. JAMES LEITNER (Lighting Designer) This is Leitner’s nineteenth collaboration with the Arden. His other local work has been seen at the Philadelphia Theatre Company, the Wilma, Act II Playhouse, Theatre Exile, Pennsylvania Ballet, and various universities. Further afield, he has worked extensively for Milwaukee Ballet, University of Wisconsin, Miami City Ballet, Sarasota Opera, Indianapolis Ballet, and the Vail International Dance Festival. CHRISTOPHER COLUCCI (Sound Designer and Composer) makes sound and music as a theater artist, composer, guitarist and producer. Last season he designed Gee’s Bend at the Arden; as well as shows at the Walnut Street Theater, People’s Light, Theater Exile, The National Constitution Center, the Lantern, InterAct, Villanova, Flashpoint, and the Delaware Theater Company, among others. Christopher received the 2008 Barrymore Award for Outstanding Sound Design and was nominated in 2009 for his work on The Hothouse at Lantern Theater Company. DAVID LINDSAY-ABAIRE (Playwright) was most recently awarded the 2008 Ed Kleban Award as America’s most promising musical theatre lyricist. Prior to that, he received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Rabbit Hole, which premiered on Broadway at MTC’s Biltmore Theatre. Rabbit Hole also received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, and the Spirit of America Award. His newest show, Shrek the Musical (book and lyrics) premiered at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater, and opened on Broadway. His other works

Who’s Who include Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo,Wonder of the World, High Fidelity, and A Devil Inside, among others. In addition to his work in theatre, Mr. Lindsay-Abaire wrote the screenplay for the Newline feature Inkheart, and Sony Picture’s upcoming Spider-Man 4. He is also currently at work on screen adaptations of his plays Rabbit Hole for 20th Century Fox, starring Nicole Kidman, and Kimberly Akimbo for Killer Films and DreamWorks. He is a proud New Dramatists alum, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the Juilliard School, as well as a member of the WGA and the Dramatists Guild Council. JAMES J. CHRISTY (Director) is delighted to return to the Arden where he has happy memories of directing productions of Translations,The Real Thing, Coyote on a Fence, Dex and Julie Sittin’ in a Tree, and others. Recent productions include a King Lear at the Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre and a Twelfth Night for the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Three years ago, he was honored with the Philadelphia Theatre Alliance’s Lifetime Achievement Award, a real highlight of his longtime career as a director and educator in Philadelphia. His productions for Villanova, the Arden, and Philadelphia Theatre Company and others have won numerous Barrymore awards including many nominations and two wins for best directing. He is a Professor Emeritus from Villanova University where he taught theatre for thirty nine years. He looks forward to more directing, travel, and good times with his wonderful wife, Franny, and their fabulous kids, and grandkids. MATT SILVA (Assistant Director) recently received his MA from Villanova University’s Theatre program where he focused on acting/directing and stage combat. He has previously Assistant Directed at the Kimmel Center for Give my Regards to Broadway and The Fantasticks as well as Act II Playhouse for Boeing Boeing. Upcoming projects include directing the Devon Theatre’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat, assistant directing Tony Braithwaite for Mauckingbird’s Tru, and AD’ing Matt Decker for Theatre Horizon’s Fat Pig. For several years now, Matt has also assistant directed shows at his beloved alma mater, St. Joseph’s Prep. ALEC E. FERRELL (Stage Manager) is happy to be back at the Arden. A graduate of Albright College, past Arden credits include My Name Is Asher Lev, Candide and Go, Dog. Go! Alec has also worked recently with Theatre Horizon, PlayPenn, and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Proud member AEA, SMA. TERRENCE J. NOLEN (Producing Artistic Director) is co-founder of Arden Theatre Company. Favorite Arden productions include all-Philadelphia casts of All My Sons, Death of a Salesman,The Grapes of Wrath and Hedda Gabler and such musicals as Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures, Falsettos, Violet and Caroline, or Change. Terry directed the inaugural production of Arden Children’s Theatre, Charlotte’s Web. He has directed six world-premiere plays by Michael Hollinger, three by Dennis Raymond Smeal, Michael Ogborn’s Baby Case, and Bruce Graham’s Something Intangible. Terry has been nominated for 23 Barrymore Awards for his directing work at the Arden and received awards for The Baker’s Wife, Sweeney Todd, Opus,Winesburg, Ohio, Assassins and Something Intangible. He directed Michael Hollinger’s Opus at Primary Stages in New York and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director. His short film The Personal Touch was nominated for an Emmy Award. AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terry Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. A graduate of Susquehanna University, Amy received the university’s first-ever Young Alumni Achievement Award. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts which is a joint program of the

Who’s Who Stanford Graduate School of Business Center for Social Innovation and National Arts Strategies. Amy has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council and the Executive Committee of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College. ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life the greatest stories by the greatest storytellers of all time. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through our new-work development program, the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and our theatre classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people. Why I Support the Arden In 1995, I moved back to Philadelphia from Texas. After reading a flyer for an interesting production, I came to the Arden to see the play Incorruptible by Michael Hollinger (with a younger Scott Greer in a supporting role). It was one of the funniest plays I have ever seen and with that visit on a lark, I was hooked and have been an Arden subscriber ever since. Over time, my enthusiasm for the quality and variety of productions has led to gathering a group of 12 friends who are now also Arden subscribers. Though I live in the suburbs, I still consider myself a Philadelphian. Without the strong core of our city, we would not have the enriching regional culture or diversions of which we are all proud. As a longtime supporter, I have come to see the Arden as more than a respite from the stresses of my hectic life, but as a significant representation of the vibrancy of our community. The Arden goes beyond just presenting high quality productions ranging from musicals, comedies and dramas. Over the past 11 years they have developed an outstanding Children’s Theatre. The Arden provides over 5,000 tickets to children in the area and facilitates an outreach program which sends artists into our schools through their Arden for All program. It is also an important part of their mission to constantly foster relationships with local artists: actors, directors, designers and writers alike. Upon learning more about the Arden’s community outreach, I became a Sylvan Society member. Many patrons may not realize that the Arden is a not-for-profit organization and depends on the support of its patrons to continue their work. New Plays Across the Country

It’s an exciting time for New Play Development. Three new plays with ties to the Arden are in development in various locations around the country. As I’m writing this article in Philadelphia, I’m listening to a rehearsal for a reading of Rogelio Martinez’s Symbiotic Love. Terry Nolen, the Arden’s Producing Artistic Director, is guiding Tony Lawton, Karen Peakes and Pete Pryor, among others, through the first reading of this new play. Commissioned by the Arden, Symbiotic Love is about cell phone towers, home schooling, environmental dangers and the mysterious disappearance of bees. The first time a new play is read out loud is exhilarating for all involved – especially for the playwright – and we’ve been lucky to have Rogelio in the rehearsal room. As the actors finish reading through a sequence, Rogelio leaps to his laptop to edit scenes. He then prints out new pages and the scene is read again. It’s a thrilling process to watch. The first reading is only the beginning of the journey as Rogelio will re-write a draft of the play to be revisited later this fall. In addition to Symbiotic Love, Rogelio is working on another play entitled When Tang Met Laika. Set in the 1990’s when Americans and Russians worked together building the International Space Station, When Tang Met Laika is a play about the thaw of the cold war, a space shuttle program finding its purpose, an orange instant breakfast drink, a stray dog and a ghost. It sounds pretty out of this world. Terry will be traveling to Colorado to direct the world premiere of this production at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in January. Joining him will be frequent Arden collaborators Ian Merrill Peakes, who will be featured in the play, Jorge Cousineau who is composing the music, and Jim Kronzer, who is designing the set. Ian, one of Philadelphia’s premier actors, has appeared in 12 productions at the Arden, most recently in Something Intangible and A Prayer for Owen Meany. Jorge has sound designed, video designed and composed music for a staggering 35 productions at the Arden, most recently The History Boys and Something Intangible. Jim Kronzer’s sleek Hollywood office in Something Intangible and the sweeping chalk-board set of Candide have been recent scenic highlights. Last season we did a reading of The Flea and the Professor by Jordan Harrison. This play, based on Hans Christian Anderson’s final fairy tale, is the first children’s theatre play that has been commissioned by the Arden. We have recently learned that it has been selected to be part of the Kennedy Center’s prestigious New Visions/New Voices Festival in Washington, D.C. New Visions/New Voices is a weeklong festival in May for playwrights and theatres to stimulate and support the creation of new plays and musicals for young audiences and families. Five theatres in the country and two theatres internationally are chosen to participate in this festival. It’s exciting to know that the Arden’s commitment to developing new work is being recognized on a national level. The future looks bright for these new works - who knows on what stage they may end up next? Two new plays that the Arden produced last season are also creating quite an impact. Bruce Graham’s Something Intangible was recently honored with seven Barrymore awards, including Outstanding New Play. My Name Is Asher Lev, adapted by Arden co-founder Aaron Posner, is being produced at three regional theatres across the country. We are grateful to you, the audience, for helping these plays to take flight.

Johnnie Hobbs, Jr is a renowned regional actor and served as the head of the acting program at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia for twenty years. Beth Yeagle, Arden’s Director of Marketing, chatted with Johnnie Hobbs, Jr., who will star as Lewis in the upcoming production of Blue Door. BY: Tell me about yourself. JHJ: I’m from Philadelphia – I grew up in North Philly, went to public schools. When I was in high school, I played on the baseball team and was in choir. I really thought I was going to be a professional baseball player but evidently I couldn’t hit a curve ball; couldn’t really throw one either. In 1969, I was drafted into the Army. When I got back to Philadelphia, I became a student at Freedom Theatre. BY: What interested you in theatre? JHJ: I had seen Sidney Poitier in some movies; I thought he was so cool. I thought to myself: maybe I could do that. Then I met John Allen [the founder of Freedom Theatre, Pennsylvania’s oldest African American Theatre.] BY: Tell me more about John Allen. JHJ: He taught me to study. He taught me hard work was the only way to learn the craft of acting. He taught me dedication. BY: What else happened at Freedom Theatre? JHJ: I met Patricia Scott. We got married in 1980. [Patricia Scott Hobbs is the director of the Performing Arts Training Program at Freedom Theatre and is also the Barrymore Award-winning choreographer of the Arden’s 2007 production of Caroline, or Change.] I also met Walter Dallas [the director of Blue Door.] BY: What’s the first production you did with Walter? JHJ: We did The Black Picture Show by Bill Gunn. I was nominated for a Barrymore Award for best lead actor. BY: What’s Walter like to work with? JHJ: He’s a tactician. He’s very clever; he knows what he’s doing. But he’s also a writer so he has an immense love of language. Blue Door is gorgeously lyrical; it’s the perfect play for Walter to direct. BY: Tell me about Lewis [the main character in Blue Door]?

BLUE DOOR JHJ: Lewis is a black professor. I’m a black professor. This is a role that hits close to home. But Lewis is lost; he’s struggling to understand who he is, what his place is in the world. And to do this, he has to explore his past. BY: How do you feel about that? JHJ: I think everyone has to set aside time for personal exploration at some point in their lives. Walter calls it a “sankofa moment.” I love that expression – sankofa translates in English to “go back and take.” This concept is often represented by a bird with its head turned backwards. It symbolizes taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress. BY: Have you ever had a sankofa moment? JHJ: Sure. I think for me it was when Alex Haley published Roots: The Saga of an American Family, in 1976. It made me start talking to my mom about our family; about where we came from. BY: Family is such an important component of Blue Door; tell me more about yours. JHJ: My son’s name is Johnnie Hobbs, III. Yes, we’re a family that believes in legacy. He’s a graduate of University of the Arts and lives in LA now. He’s a hoofer [a professional tap dancer] and an actor. BY: Are you happy your son is in this business? JHJ: Absolutely. I’m proud! I don’t take performing lightly; this isn’t a hobby. It’s a lifelong vocation. We both know that. I couldn’t be happier for him. BY: What do you love about Blue Door? JHJ: It’s powerful and unsentimental. It’s elegiac without one ounce of saccharine. BY: What do you think audiences will take away from our production? JHJ: I hope they’ll be inspired to look into their own lives; to explore their own backgrounds. While our stories may not be exactly the same, people have so many commonalities.
