WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

Passion marks our 13th production of a Stephen Sondheim musical. He is the most-produced writer in the Arden’s history (followed by Michael Hollinger and William Shakespeare). In conjunction with this production, we are proud to welcome Stephen Sondheim himself to the Arden when we present him with the Arden’s inaugural Master Storyteller Award on June 1st. The Arden’s mission is to tell great stories by great storytellers. In keeping with this mission, we have created the Master Storyteller Award, to be given to artists in any medium who exemplify the art of bringing great stories to life. We Terrence J. Nolen are honored that the first Master Storyteller recipient is Stephen Sondheim, an artist who transformed the notion of what the American musical can do and, in doing so, inspired countless artists to continue to push the boundaries of this astonishing art form. As part of the award ceremony, Arden artists will perform songs from our past Sondheim productions – celebrating this remarkable artist and giving us a chance to thank him for all that he has given us. I quickly realized that there were too many extraordinary performances to include in one night, but it’s been thrilling to think back on our rich association with Sondheim’s work that started 22 years ago with a production of Sweeney Todd at St. Stephen’s Alley. Of course, we are also looking to the future and are deep into planning for our 2015/16 season. We will open with Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, a beautiful retelling of Ovid’s myths set in a swimming pool. This production will be directed by Doug Hara (Owen in A Prayer for Owen Meany) who appeared in the original production of Metamorphoses (naked) as well as on Broadway (naked). Next we will produce Equivocation, a play about a famous Elizabethan playwright (yes, that famous playwright) who is commissioned by King James to write a new play about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. This play is both a political thriller, a backstage drama and a celebration of the collaborative process. We will welcome 2016 with a new play by Philadelphia playwright Bruce Graham. Funnyman is about an aging vaudevillian comic, struggling to remain relevant, who is faced with the opportunity to reinvent himself. For those of you who remember Something Intangible (the Disney brothers play), you know that Bruce has a wonderful ability to combine the historical with the personal, and Funnyman explores the question of what happens when your life’s work is no longer valued. Next, we will return to the work of master playwright August Wilson, with Two Trains Running, a play that examines the seismic changes of the 1960’s. And we will close the season with the Tony Award-winning musical The Secret Garden that features one of the most beautiful scores ever written. Transformation. Renewal. New work. A great American play. A soaring musical. And a pool. You want to be a part of our 2015/16 season. Thank you for joining us for Passion. We look forward to seeing you next season, at the pool.

Looking Ahead:

THE ARDEN’S 2015/16 SEASON For next season, our 28th, the Arden has selected five plays that exemplify what we do best: daring adaptations of classic literature, provocative dramas in which idealism must contend with reality, and world premieres that explore complicated notions of legacy and the American family. The season opens with Mary Zimmerman’s astonishing adaptation, Metamorphoses. From a simple, rippling pool of water the force of Ovid’s myths is conjured with gorgeous imagery and breathtaking storytelling. Lost love, dangerous passion, and reunited soul-mates wrestle with fate in this acclaimed and awe-inspiring Tony Award-winning play directed by frequent Arden collaborator Doug Hara, who appeared in the original production. Performed in and around an onstage pool, Metamorphoses is a dazzling theatrical event not to be missed. In the fall on the Arcadia Stage, Arden Producing Artistic Director Terrence J. Nolen will direct the Philadelphia premiere of Equivocation by Bill Cain. William Shakespeare is commissioned to write a play about an assassination attempt on the life of his patron, King James I. With his life hanging in the balance, Shakespeare struggles to write something honest—even as the truth slips further and further out of his grasp. Equivocation follows Shakespeare as he navigates the dangerous course between politics and art in “one of the most bracingly intelligent, sizzlingly theatrical American plays in a decade” (Variety). Featuring Ian Merrill Peakes, Tony Lawton, Sean Lally, Campbell O’Hare, Dan Hodge, and Eric Hissom as Shakespeare. In January 2016, the Arden produces Funnyman, a world premiere by Philadelphia playwright Bruce Graham (Something Intangible). Fading vaudeville comic Chick Sherman tries to revive his career and find renewed relevance when presented with the chance to star in an avant-garde off-Broadway play. When his daughter moves into his apartment post-college, Chick must answer for a lifetime of keeping her at a distance. Set in New York in 1959, Funnyman tells the story of a man whose legacy is on the line and for whom comedy is a serious business. Matt Pfeiffer (A Moon for the Misbegotten) directs. Spring of 2016 will see the return of master storyteller August Wilson to the F. Otto Haas Stage with Two Trains Running. It’s 1969 and the civil rights movement sweeps across Pittsburgh. A diner slated for demolition becomes the battleground over which one neighborhood must negotiate the shifting times. Torn between selling to the city’s urban-renewal buyout or to a practical and predatory business man, the diner’s owner and his regulars are caught between idealism and reality in this affecting drama that explores the promise and the cost of change. We close the season with the Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of the beloved novel, The Secret Garden. Sent to live at her estranged uncle’s estate after the death of her parents, ten year old Mary Lennox is haunted by the ghosts of her past and the secrets that lie within the mysterious Misselthwaite Manor. Discovering a garden hidden by her uncle, Mary uncovers an unexpected path to rebirth and renewal. Featuring Arden favorites Alex Keiper, Jeff Coon, and Steve Pacek, and directed by Terrence J. Nolen, The Secret Garden is an exquisitely beautiful story about hope blooming from the darkest of places.

DIRECTOR’S Notes “Loving you is not a choice, it’s who I am.” So sings the character of Fosca in Passion. And with these 10 words, Stephen Sondheim does what he does best: challenging us to see the world through another’s eyes; inspiring us to look at the world, and perhaps ourselves, a little bit differently. Passion may indeed be Sondheim’s most challenging and inspiring musical and, twenty years after it premiered, it still strikes me as an audacious and revolutionary work of art. Terrence J. Nolen

Passion derives from the nineteenth century novel Fosca by Ignio Ugo Tarchetti. Tarchetti was 29 and dying of tuberculosis as he wrote the novel, inspired by his affair with a married woman and how his life changed when he was transferred to a remote military outpost and met the woman who inspired the character of Fosca. The novel was published in serial form, and Tarchetti died before he completed the last chapter, which was subsequently completed by his roommate, who was also a writer and, one assumes, knew what Tarchetti was planning to write. In 1983, the Italian director Ettore Scola turned the novel into a film, Passione d’Amore. And it was that movie that Sondheim saw in 1983. As he is quoted as saying, “By the end of the movie, the unwritten songs in my head were brimming.” With Passion, Sondheim turns to one of the most prevailing themes in musical theatre: the power of love. In Passion, love is complex, often contradictory; it comes at a price. Yet Sondheim explores this theme from his own deeply personal point of view. Stephen Sondheim was falling in love—for the first time in his life—while he was working on this show, and Passion’s exquisite score is certainly his most romantic, surging with an undercurrent of love and longing. Sondheim has written, “...we are all Fosca, we are all Giorgio, we are all Clara.” Though he is always successful in giving voice to characters in a way that illuminates their humanity, with Passion, Sondheim goes further, bringing us deep into the minds of these three characters, challenging us to find ourselves in their longings, their desires, their dreams. Throughout his career, Sondheim has challenged audiences. He gave voice to characters who were marginalized (a demon barber, presidential assassins); he reinvented traditional concepts of structure with Company (a nonlinear exploration of marriage) and Merrily We Roll Along (daring to tell the story backwards). He wrote a musical about the Westernization of Japan and another about a Pointillist painting. Again and again, he pushed the boundaries of what stories the American musical can tell, daring audiences to expect the unexpected, to embrace the new, and to explore the complexity and contradictions of being human. Thank you for joining us.
