WELCOME

from the Producing Artistic Director Here at the Arden, we are committed to bringing to our stages a broad range of stories – ambitious musicals and intimate dramas; world premieres and re-imaginings of classic stories; provocative new work and plays for kids and their families. And we now have three theatres that each provide unique opportunities for different kinds of work: expansive and large-scale productions like Once in the Haas Stage; more intimate plays in the Arcadia; and plays that benefit from being up-close-and-personal in the Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre. This fall, we are thrilled to be producing two very different plays in two of these spaces: Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2 in the Arcadia and the return of Duncan Macmillan’s Every Brilliant Thing at the Bob and Selma (with Charlotte’s Web taking over the Haas Stage thru the end of January). With A Doll’s House, Part 2, we return to the Helmer household, fifteen years after Nora famously slammed the door and departed. I love how Lucas Hnath builds upon the themes and ideas of Ibsen’s play, and how he imagines that things have changed – or maybe haven’t – in his brilliant new play. This production marks the directorial debut of Tracy Brigden here at the Arden. Tracy was the Artistic Director of Pittsburgh’s City Theatre, with whom we co-produced Opus and Café Puttanesca, but I’ve known Tracy since we were both aspiring young theatre directors at Northwestern University. This amazing cast also features two actresses with whom we have long-standing relationships, each having worked at the Arden for over twenty-five years: Grace Gonglewski and Joilet Harris. Grace memorably played another Ibsen heroine, Hedda Gabler, for us in 1998, and Joilet is returning to the world of A Doll's House having played the same character in our production last winter. I’m thrilled to welcome Tracy to the Arden and to welcome back these two extraordinary actresses. (Joilet will also be performing in her own cabaret with Mary Martello in the Bob and Selma on June 21st and 22nd, so stay tuned for that). Every Brilliant Thing is a perfect show for the Bob and Selma, and we’re proud to be bringing it back after a completely sold out run last season. If you haven’t seen it before, just know that each performance is absolutely unique, and that this is a perfect role for Scott Greer. Whether this is your first time or a return visit, I know that you will love this wonderfully unique piece. And Scott. You will love Scott. Later this season, we will be producing a mini-August Wilson festival, with Gem of the Ocean, the first play of August Wilson’s American Century Cycle, in the F. Otto Haas Stage, and August Wilson’s How I Learned What I Learned, a one-person memoir written by Wilson about coming into his own as an artist in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, the neighborhood in which Gem and most of Wilson’s plays are set, in the Bob and Selma. Two very different plays, in two very different theatre spaces, celebrating the work and artistry of one of America’s greatest playwrights. Thanks for joining us here on 2nd Street. Please come back; check out our other theatres; see another great story brought to life by brilliant, committed artists. And thank you for being part of the conversation.

THANK YOU TO OUR HONORARY PRODUCER For over 30 years, the Arden has been a home for classic and contemporary work. Last year’s A Doll's House straddled both by dealing with current societal themes through the lens of Ibsen’s 1879 classic. In his notes for A Doll’s House, Ibsen wonders how a woman functions and thrives in “an exclusively male society with laws drafted by men, and with counsel and judges who judge feminine conduct from the male point of view.” These questions were controversial then and are still debated today. Elizabeth H. Gemmill with Amy Murphy

With Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2, we return to these questions through the clever continuation of Ibsen’s story. Our protagonist, Nora, shows up at her family’s home after a 15-year absence. The play opens the conversation of “what next?” Under Tracy Brigden’s deft direction, we are drawn into this intriguing story with the help of Grace Gonglewski, in her 28th role on the Arden stage, and more recent Arden favorites: Joilet Harris, Grace Tarves and Steven Rishard. I am delighted to help bring this extremely relevant story to the stage for the Arden’s 31st Season. Elizabeth H. Gemmill

Director's Notes Standing in the home she walked out of 15 years before, Nora Helmer tells her daughter that she’s going to keep fighting, “ …Because 20, 30 years from now, the world isn’t going to be the kind of place I say it’s going to be unless I’m the one to make it that way.” It’s hard not to think of the brave Christine Blasey Ford standing in front of a roomful of senators fighting for change not long ago. It would seem that Henrik Ibsen’s “door slam heard round the world” needs some further amplification. There could not be a more appropriate moment for a conversation about the gender divide than the fall of 2018. Yet, A Doll’s House, Part 2 isn’t so much a “feminist” play, as a humanist play, and a study of the challenges inherent in all types of relationships. As the husband character, Torvald Helmer, says in the last scene of the play: “Why is it so hard? Being with people?” Playwright Lucas Hnath also explores the notion of freedom — freedom from the structures of societal customs and rules of morality, freedom to make one’s own financial and legal decisions, freedom to equal treatment both personally and practically — and the price one must pay for such freedoms. Ultimately, Hnath says that A Doll’s House, Part 2 is a “conversation” with Ibsen. He started his process by getting into Ibsen’s world through rewriting the original text from a literal translation. He then asked a group of friends what they thought happened to Nora after she walked out the door in Ibsen’s masterpiece. When their responses leaned towards the idea that Nora became destitute and suffered rather than made a successful life for herself, Hnath knew the direction his “continuation” would take — the opposite to that assumption. He was also interested in examining the topics of marriage and divorce, but he wanted to give all sides equal voice. The result is an endlessly open debate, or as Ben Brantley of the NY Times said in his review of the New York production, “They’re all right, they’re all wrong, but at least they’re talking!” The hope is that in showing different perspectives, the audience will keep switching allegiances and maybe leave the theatre with some new points of view, having put themselves in each of the characters shoes over the course of the play. In the end, the play recognizes that we’ve made a lot of progress since the late 19th century, but clearly not enough. Real change can only come through an understanding of, as Nora says, “…the way the world is towards women and the ways in which the world is wrong."

Thank you to our Honorary Producer We are honored to support Scott Greer and this production of Every Brilliant Thing in the Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre. The Bob and Selma, which is named in honor of Monica’s parents, allows the Arden to experiment with artistic programming. It is where we welcome audiences to experience the process of our new play development initiatives. It is a space where students and professionals come together to collaborate. It is a place where seasoned artists explore and test new projects and where children are celebrated and given the opportunity to perform their own stories for their parents and friends. Every Brilliant Thing is the perfect play for this new space. One of the things that makes this play unique is that it strips away all the traditional trappings of theatre sets and fancy light cues and focuses entirely on the power of the actor to tell a story, one that is funny and moving and incredibly involving. Given the Arden’s commitment to Philadelphia actors, we’re thrilled to have Scott Greer bring this story to life. Scott is one of Philadelphia’s most beloved actors, and Every Brilliant Thing will mark his 34th Arden production. For over 30 years, the Arden has been one of Philadelphia’s great cultural treasures and one of the leading regional theatres in the country. We look forward to the Bob and Selma being a home for new voices and new perspectives at the Arden for the next 30 years. Monica and Philip Rosenthal Rosenthal Family Foundation

Director's Notes This production marks Scott’s 34th appearance at the Arden. One of the reasons we’ve worked with Scott so often is that he’s capable of doing so many different types of theatre: dramas, comedies, musicals, new plays, classics, children’s theatre productions. Shakespeare, Shaw, Ibsen, Chekhov, Beckett and Sondheim. Scott Greer has done them all here at the Arden. A few of the many performances and moments that remain with me: Scott playing Happy Loman opposite Greg Wood’s Biff in Death of a Salesman, most memorably the scene in which the two brothers hang out in their childhood bedroom, dreaming about a future that we know will never come. Playing a lovelorn monk in the world premiere of Michael Hollinger’s hilarious Incorruptible, followed by a parish priest in the world premiere of Steve Lopez’s Third & Indiana (featuring one of the best stage fights I’ve seen). Rolling around the hay as Wilbur in Charlotte’s Web, the inaugural Arden Children’s Theatre production in 1999, and strutting around as the Flea in the musical version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Flea & the Professor. Barking headlines and holding center stage as Walter Winchell in Michael Ogborn’s Baby Case. Playing the button-downed brother opposite the outrageous “Walt Disney” character played by Ian Merrill Peakes in Something Intangible, and then playing the outlandish and outrageous title character - and doing that 30 minute monologue - in La Bête (with Ian playing his button-downed foil). Sitting on a settee and exploring silk stockings and secret urges as a man facing his own mortality in A Doll’s House. And so many more. Scott did both of our productions of Sunday in the Park with George (playing different roles). He acted in the very first show in the Arcadia Stage (Major Barbara), the first on the F. Otto Haas Stage (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), and, of course, the first here in the Bob and Selma (Every Brilliant Thing). And that doesn’t include the many productions he’s done at 1812 Productions, the Walnut Street Theatre, Pennsylvania Shakespeare and theatres across the country (we’re taking Every Brilliant Thing to Milwaukee Rep this spring). Though Scott is an accomplished actor, singer, musician (most recently playing guitar and mandolin in Once), it’s his humanity and heart that I find so compelling. And his courage. He’s willing to try anything – relishing a challenge and thrilled to bring everything he has to his work as an actor. Which is why he’s so perfect for Every Brilliant Thing. He gets to sing a little, make a little music, adjust to different opportunities each performance, and bring to the work his humanity and huge heart. I look forward to the work yet to come. I’ve been talking with Scott about returning to Death of a Salesman, with Scott playing the title role. I long to see his Willy Loman. Stay tuned…

Two Trains Running, 2016. Directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges

Exploring the Wilson Way As our spring season begins, we are thrilled to present two plays by August Wilson; Gem of the Ocean and How I Learned What I Learned. With these shows appearing in near tandem on both our F. Otto Haas stage and the Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre, we continue our mission to tell great stories, by great story tellers, with a deeper look into how these contrasting spaces allow one to experience the similarities in both stories. Our Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre allows us to join an inmate recounting of the personal life of Wilson himself, and how the history of his neighborhood and ancestral past helped him learn about life. With Gem of The Ocean appearing on our F. Otto Haas stage, it’s grandeur helps one experience a story steeped in history. It is this common theme of history that forms a connection between these two stories; a theme that will inspire and provoke thought on were we have been, where we are now, and where we are going. In both of these works, history is represented as a journey, and the past is interpreted as a ball the must be carried forward and passed along.

As an excerpt from How I Learned What I Learned states:

“We are what we are - Are made of Old things. Come Back. Clearly. Brilliant as the sun.” With this in mind, we invite you to embark on this journey with us, and question within yourself what has shaped us, and what has shaped the nation in which we live.
