Madeira was discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese and, twenty-five years later, it already exported wine from the island to several locations in Europe. For this reason, the Madeiran wines’ quality has been globally recognized for almost 600 years. Nowadays, Madeira Wine is still produced, a unique fortified wine quite appreciated throughout the world. But still wines are also produced, commonly known as table wines. They have their own personality and extract their acidity from the ancient volcanic soils, from the winds – oftentimes merciless – that hit the vines and provide an intense salinity, from the freshness of the mountains’ altitude, from diversified fruit and flower aromas, resulting from natural pollination, and from the ripening that many days of solar exposure allows.

The Madeiran wines are a gift of nature.

Volcanic soils The particular conditions of the soils of volcanic origin give Madeira wines unique characteristics.

Madeira is one of the few wine regions to produce mountain wines.

5

It is necessary to taste them again and again so to understand and appreciate them, -and then allow ourselves to be carried away and enjoy everything they give us. These are magnificent wines, produced from the grape varieties introduced on the region that successfully adapted to the island’s soils and several microclimates. These are always small productions, when compared to other wine regions, one of the few that produces mountain wines. The wine-growing landscape found in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, spread throughout the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, encompasses approximately 500 hectares of vineyards for the production of wine with the Denomination of Origin “Madeira” (DO Madeira) and “Madeirense” (DO Madeirense), as well as wine with the Geographical Indication “Terras Madeirenses” (GI Terras Madeirenses). The terraces thereof, humanly built, are supported by stone walls, a creative way the Madeiran citizens discovered to enable the cultivation of their land along the steep slopes. Several of these terraces resemble stairways from the sea level to the higher plots, at 700 meters of altitude. Globally recognized as a tourist destination of excellence, the island of Madeira is also recognized for the notoriety of Madeira wine.

A story that has been around for a long time. Throughout history, there have been several famous personalities that drank and appreciated Madeira wine.

Sir Winston Churchill also appreciated Madeira wines, inclusively visiting the island after the war.

The tsar Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, from Russia, loved Madeira wine and the imperial wineries were always well stocked.

And many other famous personalities that, over the centuries, tasted, apprecia ted and disseminated these unique wines.

The first president of the United States of America, George Washington, celebra ted the independency of his country with a glass of Madeira Wine, which remains so to this day: when a new president of the United States is elected, the ephemeris is celebrated with a glass of Madeira wine. Also Piotr Tchaikovsky, the great Russian composer, enjoyed Madeira wine. Another famous composer, the Finish Jean Sibelius, appreciator of the good things in life, loved champagne and Madeira wines.

Therefore, taste Madeira wine, enjoy the landscape and keep the memory of the charms of these small and fascinating islands! Do take some bottles of Madeira wine to remember…

A special wine is born from diversity. Even though vineyard, in this region, may seem to be cultivated in large plots, they are actually several terraces or small gardens that are combined in a unique landscape, whose traditional conducting system is the “latada” or pergola. The first grape varieties were introduced in Madeira by order of Prince Henry, the Navigator, a few years after the discovery of the island. It is known that the Malvasia variety was ordered from the island of Crete (Greece), from the region of Cândida, hence the existence of Malvasia Cândida. At the beginning of the settle ment, people from Minho also brought vines and, obviously, other grape varieties. These and other varieties, which arrived on the island from several origins, were faced with poor and not very fertile volcanic soils with a high acidity content, but adap ted and soon began to produce fantastic wines, which were suc cessfully exported. It has remained so to our days. Nowadays, the Madeira fortified wines are made from the Tinta Negra, Malvasia, Bual, Verdelho, Sercial, Terrantez and some Moscatel grape varieties, which also then became linked to the degree of sweetness of these wines.

In Madeira, the vineyards are planted in small terraces, which make its mechanization practically impossible. Nevertheless, the Madeiran winegrowers have always pro duced table wine for their consumption, with these and other varieties, even red grapes, which have been planted over the centuries. On the island of Porto Santo, there is also a great popular wine tradition, for own or local con sumption, mainly of two white varieties: Caracol and Listrão. Therefore, there is no surprise that the first still wines appea red in the 90s of the past century. Initially, they were essentially white, mainly from the Verdelho and Arnsburger grape varieties, but red grape varieties quickly started to be used, namely Touriga Nacional, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Aragonez and Tinta Negra. More varieties were plan ted, in several areas of the island.

For true curiosity lovers. Did you know… 1.

… that still and fortified Madeira wines are certified by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute (IVBAM, I.P. – RAM) and that all of them, with no exceptions, are submitted to a physicalchemical and sensorial control by the Tasting Panel? 2.

… that, according to historical records, Madeira wine’s “Rainwater” indication is due to the fact that some Madeira wine barrels were left on Funchal pier on a night of heavy rains and some rainwater entered the barrels; nevertheless, they were sent to the United States and the importer loved it so much that he requested more of that type of wine, hence being named “Rainwater”? 3.

… that Madeira wine must be stored with the bottle upright so that the cork is not damaged, overtime by the wine’s acidity? On the other hand, still wines must be stored horizontally. 4.

… that the “Vinho de Roda” or “Torna Viagem” Wine became famous as from the 17 th century, when the Madeira wine traders became aware that the wine that travelled to India registered an acceleration in its aging process during the long trips, due to the high temperatures of the tropics, originating a greater complexity and quality, hence

opting for this production method for a long time? For this reason, the United Kingdom paid astronomical commercial values. 5.

… that, in Madeira wine, the Sercial, Verdelho, Boal and Malvasia grape varieties are associated to the degree of sweetness, only producing extra-dry or dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet wines, respectively? 6.

… that the aromas found in Madeira wine are called Bouquet? In effect, in Madeira wine you cannot detect only one aroma but several, which derive from its aging process, i.e. third aromas, like roasting aromas, caramel, nuts, vanilla, wood, among many others. On the other hand, the Madeiran still wines present primary aromas, known for their tropicality, such as passion fruit, pineapple, citric fruits the case of white wines, and the red wines present tones of red berries, jam, among others. 7.

… that Shakespeare mentioned, Madeira wine in his writing several times, for example in the execution ordered by the king of England, Edward IV, of the Duque of Clarence, brother of the future king Richard III, who chose to die by drowning in a barrel of Malvasia?

A result of knowledge, technique and passion. In the case of Madeira wine, a fortified wine, after the harvest and grape crushing, it is subject to fermentation, which is stopped with the addition of vinic alcohol at 96%, depending if the oenologist intends to get a sweeter or drier wine. The production process then follows, “Estufagem” or “Canteiro”. In the first, the wine is placed in stainless steel vats, for approxi mately 3 months, and heated up to 45 to 50 degrees Celsius, and is then submitted to an “aging” period of, at least, 90 days at room temperature. After this process, the wine may remain in stainless steel or be placed in wooden bar rels, until it meets the conditions for bottling.

© IVBAM, IP-RAM

In the second process, “Canteiro”, the wines are aged in barrels, normally on the top floors of the warehouses, where the temperatu res are higher, for a minimum period of 2 years. It undergoes an oxida tive aging in the barrel, developing unique characteristics of intense and complex aromas upon the wines. This denomination derives from the fact that the barrels are placed on wooden support beams, called canteiros. Regarding the Madeira still wines, the process is, somehow, similar to the production of still wines around the world, highlighting the terroir of the Madeiran wines, granting them a unique acidity and freshness.

Wine service. It is very important that the still or fortified Madeira wines are ser ved adequately and according to the producers’ recommendations, so that their full potential may be enjoyed regarding its aromas and taste.

Regarding Madeira wine more specifically, it is a wine with an immense longevity that, due to its acidity, must be stored upright, in a dark, dry and fresh place, with a constant ideal temperature bet ween 12 and 14 degrees Celsius.

The wines must be stored in good conditions, in adequate locations. The bottles must be opened in front of the customer and the customer must try the wine before approving it to be served.

Madeira wine benefits from the decantation process, especially the older wines, which may take longer than 4 hours. After a bottle of Madeira Wine has been ope ned, it does not deteriorate when in contact with oxygen, therefore its longevity may vary between 6 months to one year, or even more.

If the establishment has a som melier, he/she must carry out the initial tasting to verify the good conditions of the wine. The wines, either white, rosé or red, still, sparkling or fortified, must be served in the correct glasses recommended for each type of wine. One of the most important aspects is the serving temperature of the wine. They mustn’t be either too cold or hot as, in either case, the wines lose its characteristics. These details are quite important and must be mentioned to those in charge, in case the correct service is not provided.

The serving temperature is very important and, generally, the 3 year-old wines must be served at temperatures between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius, the 5 to 10 year-old wines at temperatures between 14 and 16 degrees and the wines over 15 year-old, fras queiras and colheitas must be served between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius.

Storage Due to its acidity, Madeira wine should be stored vertically.

Enogastronomy. The best way to properly appreciate a wine is with food. But this is also where one should be more careful, particularly regarding the choice of wine for a specific dish, in order to achieve the correct balance between the aromas and taste of both. The best way to properly appre ciate a wine is with food. But this is also where one should be more careful, particularly regarding the choice of wine for a specific dish, in order to achieve the correct balance between the aromas and taste of both. Each type of wine has very specific characteristics, which increases the difficulty to choose. Then, each person has their taste; there are those who only like white wines; those who only drink red wines and so choosing becomes hard and difficult. There is only one way to overcome these situations: to try several times and always with different combina tions, so as to find out the ones we like the most. In the case of the two types of Madeira wines – still (table wines) and fortified (Madeira wines), the range of solutions is quite broad,

which offers the ability to answer to several culinary requests. The still Madeira wines present a great acidity, they are fresh and normally have a low alcohol content. They go quite well with the tra ditional fish and seafood dishes, such as the white and rosé wines. The traditional meat dishes, particularly the beef skewer on a laurel stick, also combine well with Madeiran wines, mainly the red ones. But these wines go beyond all this as combinations with seve ral cuisines, such as sushi, Indian, Italian and Mediterranean food, may be explored. Therefore, the Madeiran still wines are starting to be successful also on mainland Portugal and even abroad, in which the consumers now discover these different wines.

21

On the other hand, the forti fied wines, with some centuries of history around the world, are increasingly used in several combinations, due to their great versatility and quality. Even though they are sweet wines, their high acidity grants the necessary freshness to be used as an appetizer, but also with some cheese, smoked sausages or even

foie gras entrées, oftentimes a surprise to many consumers. The natural connections to diverse desserts are what make Madeira wines a safe option. Among the dry, semi-dry, semi -sweet and sweet, there is always a Madeira wine that goes well with a dessert. After a good meal, Madeira wine is the perfect pair with a good cigar.

As Sir Winston Churchill, a great appreciator of Madeira wines and cigars, used to say: “My tastes are simple: I am easily satisfied with the best”.

On the Northern coast of the island, in Seixal, a man, since always connected to agriculture, developed a wine production project, aggregating more than 30 vineyard plots, some small, some a few meters from the sea, some up the hill. However, he has produced grapes of great quality from which the Terras do Avô [Grandfather’s land] wines were born and developed, with distinctive and unmistakable labels. The wines gradually earned their place in the local market and soon began to be sold and appreciated in the mainland. This is so thanks to the excellent taste and persistence of the producer’s daughter, who dedicated herself, heart and soul, to the disclosure and sale of their wines. This producer, always persistent and non-conformist, also produces sparkling wine in the island of Madeira, which has been well accepted and even awarded in contests.

Diana Silva is a Madeiran young woman, with a degree in Tourism, Commercial Management and Winemaking, who has been working and developing her professional activity in these areas for over a decade. She decided to innovate, starting with her first harvest of 2017 and producing three types of table wines – white, rosé and red – all from one single variety, Tinta Negra. This variety, consi dered by many to be a lower variety, has been surprising many people, from the North to the South of the country. She baptized them as “Ilha” (Island) and they are classified as Madeiran PDO. The desire to return to her roots, her love for the land and her belief in the terroir compelled Diana Silva to start this ambitious process. Convinced of the Madeira Island’s potential to produce high-quality table wines, she aims to raise awareness and disclose this region, only known for its fortified wines. Diana has been developing her activity through several partnerships with different winegrowers and the wines, similar to the ones of almost all other table wine producers, are produced in the São Vicente Winery. Her creations are an experience to all wine lovers and enthusiasts, who are lucky to taste the atlanticity, minerality, acidity and elegance of the “Atlantic Pearl” (Pérola do Atlântico)..

It is in the Eastern edge of the Island of Madeira, in the parish of Caniçal, particularly in the Agricultural Park of Caniçal, where the geomorphological characteristics of the location present rocky outcrops of red and basaltic stone, that the vineyards give rise to the Madeiran red wine “Pedra de Fogo” [Fire Stone]. The location’s specificity, its proximity to the sea, the conducting system and the modern production and winemaking techniques make this wine a balanced and fresh nectar. This wine’s producer is called Elsa Ferreira, graduated in Agricultural Engineering. Upon the completion of the course, the opportunity to develop this project in the Agricultural Park of Caniçal appeared. She embraced this project with tenacity, boldness, determination and dedication, because when opportunity walks hand-in-hand with occasion, it is even better. In 2003, with a gross area of 2ha, between the mountain and the sea, the plantation of the vines with the Touriga Nacional variety was begun, which main goal was, and still is, the production of a Madeiran red table wine – Madeiran PDO. The 2007 harvest was the first introduced on the market. The “Pedra de Fogo” wine has unique characteristics, exclusively produced with grapes from the exploitation of the planted variety Touriga Nacional. The wine harvest usually takes place on the second week of September. This is a manual harvest and the grapes are processed in the São Vicente Winery. Approximately 6 thousand bottles are produced on a yearly basis, subsequently traded on the regional market. The “Pedra de Fogo” wine is widely accepted by part of the consumers.

The history of Henriques & Henriques dates back to 1850, when the company was founded by João Gonçalves Henriques, a descendant of a family that was established in Câmara de Lobos for many years. After his death, in 1912, his sons João Joaquim and Francisco Eduardo Henriques formed a partnership, from which comes the name “Henriques & Henriques”. The Henriques family has played an important role in the making of Madeira wine, being known as the best wine pro th ducers of the island. Several events occurred in the second half of the 19 century, notably the appearance of the powdery mildew, in 1852, and, shortly after, the phylloxera, in 1872, diseases of the vine which resulted in serious damage to the vineyards and, as a consequence, led to the interests of the family to be consolidated into a company, which later, in 1925, began exporting its own wines, rather than supplying them to other exporters. In 1992, Henriques & Henriques began an expansion program and invested in the construction of a new aging cellar, in Câmara de Lobos, and also in the construction of a new winemaking centre, built on its estate in Quinta Grande, which provided the company with the means, suitable for using the latest technological innovations, while maintaining the family tradition of almost 200 years in producing the finest quality wines of Madeira. Located on the Northern coast of the island, it consists of vineyards with some altitude of var ious grape varieties producing white, rosé and red wines. Verdelho is the most important grape variety, with high-quality white wines, although the reds have been increasingly demanded. Over the last few years, this producer has invested in a differentiated tourist offer, by building a traditional wine press in its facilities, which allows to receive tourists and serve appetisers and even some meals, to accompany the tasting of its wines. And, during the harvests, there is even the possibility of treading on foot, which is always a curiosity. The landscape is magnificent, with the mountains of the northern coast up there, interspersed with gentle valleys that take much of the abundant water to the sea.

This is a family project, in which father and daughter produce red table wine. The vineyards are located at several altitudes in the municipality of Machico, with the Touriga Nacional, Merlot and Syrah varieties, in a total of a hectare, in which approximately 3300 bottles are produced per year with the “Boneca de Canudo” brand. The story behind this wine is quite funny. The idea to plant vines there came from a woman, civil engineering, therefore the holder of a canudo (popular denomination of the degree’s diploma). As the agricultural works in the area were traditionally carried out by men, one of them vented: “That doll (boneca) with the canudo was just what we needed!”. The vent was known and commented, and the producers decided that it should be the name of the wine. It is the daughter, Elsa Franco, who is focused on the disclo sure and trade of the wine. Recently, the red wine of 2016 won a bronze medal on the renowned contest “Sommelier Wine Awards” of 2019. The red wine of 2015 had already won a silver medal on the same contest in 2016. The first experiences with white varieties are currently ongoing in the vineyards in Machico, Ponta do Sol and Santo da Serra.

It is one of the oldest companies producing Madeira wine, over 200 years old, and is part of the history of these unique wines in the world. Its founder was John Blandy, in 1811, and the family company is now in its seventh generation. In 1838, John Blandy acquired the convent of St. Francis (São Francisco), right in the centre of the city of Funchal, where the company’s wineries have been operating until today. Although the company has a modern winery in the Caniçal area, where it produces its wines, it is still at Blandy’s Wine Lodge – also known as Adegas de São Francisco – that it has a large stock of old wines and that many of them are stored, whether in barrels and casks, those that are still ageing, whether in demijohns and bottles, those that have already reached their peak of evolution, waiting to be sold and appreciated. The production is led by one of the best-known Portuguese winemakers, Francisco Albuquerque, who knows, like few, all the characteristics of the island and its vineyards. Although Blandy has some vineyards of its own in various places on the island, it still buys grapes from a large number of winegrowers, according to tradition. And they also produce quite successful table wines, with the Atlantis brand, a white, a rosé and a reserve white. With a beautiful museum, which tells the story of this family and Madeira wine itself, there are many other reasons for interest, including Madeira wine tasting, for all tastes and purses. Blandy exports its wines all over the world, which is another family tradition. It is a place of worship, a must visit.

Based on a property that has belonged to the same family for 3 generations, the company was founded in 1999 by Octávio Ferraz. Although there was a vineyard there at the beginning of the 20 th century, they decided to convert it into a banana plantation. But in 1999, they started planting vines again, with the white varieties Verdelho, Malvasia Fina and Arnsburger, and the red varieties Aragonês, Merlot and Syrah. As a natural evolution, the first white wine appeared in 2005 under the Palmeira e Voltas brand, which is a place in the city of Câmara de Lobos, nearby. In fact, the vineyards are planted on a hillside called Ribeira dos Socorridos, belonging to the Palmeira e Voltas locality. It was followed, in 2007, by the first red wine, which was named after a typical fishing boat of Câmara de Lobos, the Xavelha. Finally, following market trends, in 2014 appeared the first rosé wine, also with the Xavelha brand. In the visits they provide to tourists, there are several curiosities, among fruit trees and aromatic plants, some small lakes, even some domestic animals and a view that goes up to Câmara de Lobos, in the background. A well-equipped tasting room and an open-air porch provide the conditions to enjoy the wines, together with some appetisers.

Authored by two leading winemakers and good friends, Rui Reguinga and Francisco Albuquerque, it was a success. In such a way that the production of wines of this brand continued until today. Now with its own vineyards in the Caniçal area, from the Verdelho, Merlot, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, Aragonêz, Complexa and Syrah grape varieties. Founded in 1850 by João Pereira D’Oliveira, it is one of the best-known companies in the production of Madeira wines. It has a well-known establishment in the centre of Funchal, where it receives visitors and tourists and offers its wines of three, five, ten and fifteen years, all produced from the Tinta Negra variety, for them to taste. But the great difference of this family company, for many others, is in the enormous stocks, which have been accumulating over the years, of Frasqueira wines, the noble Madeiran varieties Sercial, Verdelho, Boal, Malvasia, Terrantez and even a very rare Moscatel. Currently, this century-old company is managed by Luís D’Oliveira, grandson of the founder and his nephew Filipe D’Oliveira (winemaking), holding six wine ageing warehouses in Funchal, but only one is open to the public, where our tasting and sales department is located in a classified building, a construction of 1619, former High School of Funchal, acquired by our grandfather in the year 1911, located north of the Praça do Município, next to the Rectory of the University of Madeira, Rua dos Ferreiros, 107. This warehouse contains a large number of old barrels and casks, some over 100 years old, where some of our Madeira wines are stored for ageing and maturation. Pereira D´Oliveira, Lda., a mandatory point of visit in Funchal.

Barbeito is currently led by Ricardo Diogo, grandson of Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos, who founded the Vinhos Barbeito [Barbeito Wines] company in 1946. The company started by purchasing old wines and, from these acquisitions, there are still some in stock. Manuela Vasconcelos, Ricardo’s mother, also used to buy older wines from friends and acquaintances. However, Ricardo Diogo, despite appreciating these relics that he knows so well, soon pursued the path of innovation, producing different Madeira Wines, oftentimes going against the flow. Nowadays, Barbeito produces modern wines, without ever forgetting the traditional techniques. The modernization has never stopped, mainly from 1991, when the Kinoshita family, friends of the company and its distributers in Japan since 1967, joined the company, investing on its modernization. From the 1992 harvest, they never stopped innovating and experiencing, leading the company towards success. In 2008, a modern winery was built, in the area of Câmara de Lobos, with cutting-edge technology, together with a traditional casks room for the wine aging. Simultaneously, the wines’ image was truly revolutionized, with modern, irreverent and often provoking labels, which have proven to be a great success. But Barbeito never forgets the tra dition of these great wines and, therefore, continues to prepare special batches subsequently presented on the market, once again with great success. Its work with the Tinta Negra variety, not always appreciated in the past, is remarkable, with quite surprising results. As Ricardo Diogo once said: “What I like the most about this grape variety is the fact that nobody likes it”. Always against the flow, leading a successful Madeira company, now also producing a still white wine, from the Verdelho variety, of the 2017 harvest. The success continues.

In 1999, a group of small landowners started to reconvert various vines of the Jaquet variety, planting more modern varieties: Touriga Nacional, Merlot, Tinta Roriz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Verdelho, Arnsburger, among others. Motivated by this new dynamic, given to the wine sector in the north of the island, they decided to embrace a more ambitious project, setting up a com mercial company in 2002. Seiçal - Sociedade de Produtores de Vinho do Norte, Lda. adopted the old name of the parish of Seixal, located in the municipality of Porto Moniz, as a way to honour those origins. Currently, the company is led by the Jardim couple. Dina and Rafael Jardim are dedicated to the vineyard and wine in this project that they helped to conceive 20 years ago. The company has a small space next to the Parish Council, with great hospitality and allowing the tasting of its wines. It currently produces wines of three brands: Seiçal (white, rosé and red), Latadas (white and red) and Palheiros (red). Latadas is a tribute to the many pergola (latada) vineyards that existed all over the island and that can still be found today on both the north and south coasts. And Palheiros is also a tribute to the past and to the people of the countryside who built the haystacks (palheiros), of which there are still some examples in Chão da Ribeira, in the upper area of Seixal.

With vineyards of the Arnsburger variety planted more than 20 years ago, which result from crossing the Riesling grape varieties, this property, located on the northern coast of Madeira, in Boaventura, was acquired by this family in 2015. With unique beauty and surroundings, between the Laurel Forest and the sea, this family has recovered its vineyards, in an environmentally sustainable production project controlled by them, and is currently developing a Wine Tourism Unit under the brand “Terra Bona Nature & Vineyards”. After the success of the first harvest of the “Family Harvest” range, in 2019, in their second harvest, they launched two new white wines, with the same variety and rigorously selected grapes, but with differentiated stages: one in French oak barrels and the other in terracotta barrels, under the “Terra Bona Heritage” brand. All the wines are produced under the oenological guidance of the São Vicente Winery / IVBAM team. It is with this dream and passion that they invite you to visit the northern coast of the island of Madeira and toast with them.
