A super-clean, CGC 9.6 copy of “Amazing Spider-Man #1” (March 1963), one of only five of its type and grade known to exist, set off a bidding war at Hake’s July 25 and 26 auction of pop culture memorabilia, rocketing to an astonishing final price of $520,380. The comic had been displayed at Comic-Con in San Diego and attracted huge interest from fans, a sure sign of what was to come.

“Collectors knew what made the book special. It came from the John B. Goodrich collection, had desirable white pages, and was one of only three at that grade level to reach the auction marketplace in more than a decade,” said Hake’s president, Alex Winter. “Eight months prior to our sale, a CGC 9.6 ‘Spider-Man #1’ which had offwhite as opposed to white pages sold for $336,000. Everyone in the comic book world was aware that our July auction was a buying opportunity not to be missed, so the result did not surprise us. Now the winning bidder owns one of the world’s top copies of one of the most important books in the Marvel universe,” continued Winter.

More than 300 CGC-certified comic books were offered, including examples of nearly all of Marvel’s key Silver Age titles. The company’s August 1962 “Amazing Fantasy #15,” CGC-graded 7.5 VF, is notable for its

introduction of Peter Parker/ Spider-Man, as well as the character’s cover debut. Like the auction’s top lot, it came with provenance from the Goodrich collection and boasted bright colors and stunning condition overall. It sold at the upper end of its estimate range for $170,844. A third highlight from the Goodrich trove was

New Frontier To Auction Prized Old West And Native American Artifacts

Aug. 26 Sale Will Be In Conjunction With Cheyenne Firearms And Western Collectibles Show

Collectors of genuine Old West, cowboy and Native American art and relics are getting ready to “saddle up” and head out to historic Cheyenne, Wyo., for one of the year’s most spirited gatherings: New Frontier’s big Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25, 26, and 27, show and auction at the Laramie County Event Center at Archer.

A festive, well-attended annual get-together, New Frontier’s three-day buyingand-selling bonanza draws top dealers and enthusiastic collectors from all over North America. Fans of market-fresh Western and Native American antiques, whether in attendance or taking part online, always look forward to the high-quality auction of fine and historical treasures traditionally held on day two of the event. This year the auction is slated for Saturday, Aug. 26,

Masterfully sculpted bronze titled “Buckaroo Sport” by multiple award-winning Western artist Mehl Lawson (American, b. 1942), 22 inches high, will be estimated at $2,500-$3,500.

starting at 2 p.m. Mountain Time/4 p.m. Eastern Time, with absentee and Internet live bidding available through LiveAuctioneers.

Two collections anchor this year’s lineup, a Wyoming estate collection of cowboy

antiques and memorabilia, and a Calgary, Canada, collector’s lifelong assemblage of Native American antiques and relics. The 359-lot auction also includes select additional consignments representing a variety of specialty categories, including spurs, saddles, horsehair bridles, chaps, moccasins, tomahawks and knives, and antique and vintage firearms.

“Investment grade” is the description that most accurately describes this year’s offering, starting with the pair of G.S. Garcia double-mounted silver star spurs with engraved domes. These massive spurs make a solid statement with their extra-large shanks, wellmarked split heelbands, and original dovewing straps. The ultimate prize for any advanced spur collector, the pair will cross the auction block with a $15,000-$25,000 estimate.

Prison-made bridles exhibit some of the most imaginative artistry in the entire realm of Western Americana. New Frontier will present an exceptional array of early examples, including a scarce Deer Lodge (Montana State Prison) bridle with a pink and green background and medley of additional colors. It displays an almost never-seen barber pole and geometric hitched design and is accented by 12 dazzling tassels. The presale estimate is $4,500-$6,500. Another first-class work of art is the unique Walla Walla (Washington State Penitentiary) hitched horsehair bridle with a dazzling multicolor design, American Flags in the browband, and additional embellishments, including beautiful tassels and ribboned nickel rosettes. The bridle is in nearly unused condition and will be offered with a $3,000-$4,000 estimate.

An antique, one-of-a-kind Hamley championship trophy saddle was presented to George Weir in 1915 when he won the Steer Roping competition at the Pendleton RoundUp. It is accented with silver conchos and handsomely tooled both on the saddle and the fenders, which say “The Round-Up 1915.” It is further personalized with the phrase “Let ‘er Buck 1915,” which is braided into the stranded mohair cinch. This unique presentation saddle in near-mint condition is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

New Frontier’s owner, Scott Tarbell, said he is “especially proud of the Native American selection” that

Famed rodeo trick rider/roper, actor and stuntman Monte Montana’s (1910-98) 15-inchtall stovepipe style boots, with flashy color, stylish stitching, decorative “MM” monogrammed tops, and wingtip toes, accompanied by photo of Montana wearing the boots at a Bohlin saddlery store, will be estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

awaits bidders at this year’s Cheyenne auction. The category is led by a spectacular ca. 1880 Eastern Sioux (Northern Plains) pipe tomahawk that has a forged-steel pipe head, etched thunderbird blade, inlaid bowl, and stamped lead top. Its burlwood haft is inlaid with multiple decorations, a brass duck, rings and a crescent moon and is capped with contours in the shape of a bird’s head. The estimate will be $7,500-$12,500.

A late 1890s Sioux buckskin war shirt is a sight to behold with its pony beads that generously accent the front and shoulders as well as the pocket flaps. It is further enhanced by uncommonly seen tradecloth trim, and fringe. Made with obvious pride, this 19thcentury treasure boasts great eye appeal and is estimated at $4,500-$6,500.

The auction is packed with other recent discoveries from respected collections, including beaded moccasins, gauntlets, bandoliers, body adornments and even Cree and Arapahoe beaded saddles; textiles, rodeo, advertising and Western movie posters; and a Winchester 1866 carbine and other 19th-century firearms. A gorgeous men’s Bulova Alaskan gold-nugget watch was custom-made for Bill Anderson, owner of the Ponderosa Ranch during the production years of the TV series “Bonanza.” This hefty timepiece is estimated at $1,500-$15,000.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: An Interesting Observation

starting to fit out their houses in a much more eclectic way. The piece went on to describe homes where modern met formal and early portraiture could be shown with Arts and Crafts.

Over vacation, I was chilling on the porch of the New England inn where we were staying, and I happened upon an article about antiques collecting in a shelter magazine. Let me also say to my chagrin and sadness that I neither wrote down the name of the article or publication, nor even thought about swiping a copy. The gist of the story was that Millennials and Gen Z would become the collectors that we had hoped for in terms of breathing new life into the antiques trade.

Do tell? Well, the story noted that Gen X collectors (that would be most 40-55year-olds) were the ones who abandoned traditional antiques in favor of midcentury modern. The subsequent generations have not been wedded to that look exclusively, but rather were

It got me thinking both about the future of collecting and how the Gen Xers had been the ones who really tamped down the antiques market. I was born in 1965, so depending upon whose formula you use, I could be a very end boomer or a very first generation Gen X. In saying that, with feet in both camps, I do have to agree that my peers and those who were immediately younger were definitely not collectors of early items. They wanted modern design. Maybe because the 1950s and 1960s were so revered by our generation. Every year, the annual “Grease” themed high school dance in honor of the movie of the same name was always packed.

The author of the article

went on to note something that I had always felt was critical as well. The Millennial and Gen Z folks are very environmentally conscious (arguably the way that we, the Gen Xer, were supposed to be having come out of the 1970s). Thus, antiques are the perfect item for the environmentally concerned folks. It is about re-using and repurposing! It is also about, depending upon how you think about it, a carbon neutral footprint since the tree for the Empire dresser was harvested 190 years ago.

So I think perhaps as the trade ponders where it is going, there is hope for a new generation of collectors. They will not necessarily decorate in a formal Colonial or Victorian style, but they will mix and match pieces in their own aesthetic. They will discover that mismatched china is cool or that a quality painting makes any room look better.

And in the end, that is

perhaps what will come to shape the future of the trade and where we all should be thinking about in terms of the market.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Lantern Vol. 2 #80” (October 1970). A depiction from the “Even An Immortal Can Die” storyline, the artwork zeroed in on Green Lantern’s distinctive power ring, which was visible in three of the four panels. The lot reached the midpoint of its estimate range, selling for $25,057. Another sought-after item was Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez’s original pen-andink comic book cover art for DC Comics’ “Super-Team Family #15” (April 1978), featuring The Flash, Orion, Lightray, and Metron of the New Gods. It sold at the upper end of its estimate range for $17,653.

Even Bart Simpson got in on the act. An Art DeBart card with original art by Matt Groening, PSA DNA-graded 8NM-MT AUTO 10, came from Skybox/Bongo Comics’ 1993 limited-edition of 400. The “framed,” artist-signed portrait card captures the rebellious offspring of Marge and Homer Simpson and realized $13,769 against an estimate of $5,000-$10,000.

The “Star Wars” selection was topped by a Kenner Boba Fett L-slot rocket-firing prototype action figure from 1979. AFAgraded 75+ EX+/NM and accompanied by a notarized CIB COA, the unpainted 3.75-inch-tall figure lacked its rocket accessory,

but due to its extreme rarity, it still commanded $99,297.

Market trend-spotters would not have missed the bullish prices paid for Kenner store displays. A large (25-by 40-inch) “Star Wars” Toy Center hanging display made in 1979 was a visual feast with its images of the Death Star looming in the background as Darth Vader and his squad of TIE Fighters squared off against the fast-approaching X-Wing Fighters. It was AFA-graded 90 NM+/Mint and swept past its $5,000-$10,000 estimate to reach a final price of $42,690.

A strong array of political memorabilia offered collectors great variety from a long timeline of American history. Flying high above the category was a silk “Victory Ball” American Flag used during the 1840 presidential campaign of candidate and future president, William Henry Harrison. It is one of only three examples of its type known to Hake’s experts and is documented in Herbert R. Collins’ reference book, “Threads of History.” It sold above high estimate for $21,845.

Among the early sports treasures that found favor with bidders was a 1910 postcard from the sought-after “PC796 Sepia Postcards” series that shows Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner shaking hands at

the 1909 World Series. It was PSA-graded 2 (MK) good and sold within estimate for $12,590.

All prices quoted in this report are inclusive of buyer’s premium as stated in Hake’s Terms & Conditions

The Marvel “Amazing SpiderMan” #14 (July 1964), CGC 9.4 NM, featuring the first appearance of Green Goblin as well as the first meeting of SpiderMan and Incredible Hulk, set a new auction record for its title/grade, selling for $38,615.

together cars that have historical significance associated with the famed race in France. This includes the #1 and #3 Cunningham Corvettes from the 1960 race, a 1968 L88 DX that was tapped to dominate the race but ultimately never made it across the pond due to the postponement of the race in ’68, and a trio of Callaway Cars that were attached to various races but for the first time ever come together to not only be part of a car show, but to honor their namesake, the late Reeves Callaway.

Corvettes at Carlisle is also giving away a Corvette in 2023. The giveaway winner has a 1 in 1,000 chance to win a 2023 2LT. Hosted by the Lancaster County Corvette Club, the giveaway benefits Clare House and the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). Tickets are numbered 000-999, and the winning number is based on the Saturday night (Aug. 26) Pennsylvania Lottery Pick 3 drawing. Tickets are $150 per entry, with the final few being auctioned in person at Corvettes at Carlisle.

Speaking of the CMAF,

friends of the foundation will come together Friday (Aug. 25) for the annual dinner at the neighboring Carlisle Expo Center. There will be significant cars on display, special guests, a merchandise/memorabilia auction, door prizes, and great food. All proceeds benefit the CMAF.

In addition to the 2LT, there are many prizes on the line too. Lingenfelter Performance will present the King of the X autocross competition, where two winners will take home $500 each; the Ron Fellows Driving School is giving away an experience at their Nevada venue; and Aerolarri Wheels will present four of its best to the People’s Choice winner.

Online registration for the Fun Field is available through Sunday, Aug. 20, with in-person registration options available throughout the event. In addition, spectator admission is $20 for adults, with kids 12 and under admitted free of charge. Spectator parking is $10 per car, with on-grounds options for Corvettes only, while many off-grounds options are also available for non-Corvette owners.
