From the Pastor’s Desk CHRISTMAS PAST Christmas Day was just two weeks ago, and now with the Solemnity of the Epiphany celebrated this weekend and The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord tomorrow the Church brings this season of joy and gladness to a close. Christmas requires much preparation and attention, especially with purchasing gifts, cooking and baking many of our favorite foods and decorating our homes for these special days. It is probably fair to say that most people are breathing a sigh of relief about getting back to our ordinary routines. Christmas here at St. Boniface went well. We welcomed thousands of people to our Church for the six Christmas Masses that were celebrated here, and our Church was full for all Masses, in fact, the 4:00 PM Christmas Vigil had record crowds with over 1200 in attendance at that Mass alone. Preparations for the big day began weeks in advance. Thanks to the graciousness and generosity of many hard working and dedicated parishioners our Church and its grounds looked splendid for the Christmas Season. Many visitors remarked at how beautiful the Church and grounds looked and how faith filled and welcoming our parishioners are! Priests come and go in parishes, but it is the parishioners who make a faith community so vibrant and alive and St. Boniface, Martyr is a prime example of such a community! Know I appreciate and value all you are and all you do for St. Boniface. A special THANK YOU to all who were a part of making Christmas so special, especially the Pastoral Staff,

Maintenance Staff, lectors, altar servers, Extraordinary Ministers, musicians, cantors, ushers, collection counters and Altar Guild and many other volunteers who contributed to making Christmas so beautiful. Thanks also to you, the parishioners, for your generous financial support, not only at Christmas but the whole year long! Equally, I am grateful for how joyfully and freely you share your time and talent with the parish during the course of the year. Father Azubuike and I are also very appreciative for the gifts, cards, and homemade candies and cookies that you left at the rectory; we are grateful for your generosity and kindness! On behalf of Father Azubuike and the Pastoral Staff, a Happy and Holy New Year to you and your families and May God continue the good work He has begun in you! On another note, congratulations to Loretta Zanier, the recipient of the 2016 St. Agnes Medal, awarded by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Loretta has coordinated the Baptism program here for many years and works tirelessly and enthusiastically in welcoming parents who are expecting a child and prepares them for the sacrament of Baptism. Congratulations, and thank you, Loretta! - Fr. Kevin

Don’t Forget Your Baby Bottle! On the weekend of January 14th & 15th, St. Boniface parish will be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Did you know that they provide: free pregnancy tests maternity housing with eligibility requirements medical care referrals cribs car seats diapers

…and all other baby items that may be needed We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle.

Please return the bottles on January 28th & 29th The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother’s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place.

Let us pray with our whole hearts for the lives of our unborn children. All Saints Regional Catholic School 12 Pearsall Avenue, Glen Cove, NY Accredited by the Middle School Association of Colleges and Schools. Supported by the Parishes of St. Boniface, St. Hyacinth, St. Mary, St. Patrick, St. Rocco

Take Five for Faith Sunday, January 8, 2017 Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord Sometimes it seems we’re much more comfortable with the divine Jesus: solemn, distant, “up there.” However, he dwells “down here” in our midst as well. Epiphany, the showing forth of Jesus on earth, is a kind of second Christmas, a celebration that God became a human being, just like us. The manifestation of God-with-us is a blessing on our world, and on our humanity, which raises our life in the flesh to something profoundly holy. Traditionally, it’s a time to bless the home, to remind ourselves that our earthly home is a sacred place—and that our heavenly home also awaits. Monday, January 9 Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Did Jesus “need” to be baptized? Not for the removal of the effects of original sin. But Jesus took every means available to reveal the way to salvation. And so he went before us into the river Jordan and up the road to Calvary to show us that the way to life is not to avoid death, but to pass through death to life everlasting. Baptism is a doorway that welcomes us into that mystery. Theologian Karl Rahner said, “Some things are known not by grasping them, but by being grasped.” Let the mystery of Baptism grasp you. You will never be the same. Tuesday, January 10 The tree may have been on the curb a week ago. But the Christmas season officially ended yesterday. The church’s season of “Ordinary Time” now begins, but it doesn’t have to be business as usual. Along with New Year’s pledges to diet and exercise, why not slim down your carbon footprint too? In the United States, today it’s National Cut Your Energy Costs Day. It’s not just about saving money but also about saving the earth in little ways: Change the furnace filter. Take shorter showers. Insulate leaky sills. Turn off lights in other rooms. Carpool. Love Creation, glorify its Maker. Wednesday, January 11 Where does authority come from? Good teachers and managers know that authority isn’t acquired merely by gaining a title. It has to be earned. “Because I said so!” may occasionally be a necessary fallback position for managers and harried parents, but it reveals a failure of authority rather than the expression of it. True authority

flows from an authentic relationship with God. That’s why Jesus was able to speak so persuasively that he cast out demons and, perhaps even more miraculously, reached people whose hearts were hardened. Humble prayer and honest listening to God are ways we can increase our own authority— at home, at work, and in the community. Thursday, January 12 Feast of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Prompted by a call to live in service to God, young Marguerite Bourgeoys (1620-1700), foundress of the Congregation of Notre Dame, was teaching poor children in France when she heard of the foundation of Ville Marie (later to become Montreal). She decided to travel across the sea to establish schools and teach French and native children. She is recognized as one of three cofounders of Montreal and was called “mother of the colony.” Like Jesus, Marguerite had numerous responsibilities and challenges in her ministry, but she persevered. Let the example of Jesus’ and Marguerite’s missionary zeal inspire you to go out of your way to be a healing presence for someone today. Friday, January 13 A lot of things get passed off as “God’s will” for us— most of them are realities over which we have no power. “Acts of God” like hurricanes and tornadoes get lumped into this category, as well as famine, disease, and misfortune. Would God really bring disaster upon us to wake us up, punish the wicked, or call us to account? In some ancient Hebrew stories, God does seem to act sometimes like the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain, pulling levers and manipulating events to some divine purpose. But in Jesus, God’s will is made manifest in the flesh. God chooses to heal, to forgive, and to save. Saturday, January 14 Many of us these days aren’t quite sure how sin is a problem. We now understand the source of much of our behavior lies buried in past events and hidden impulses. The downside of this awareness, however, has been a greater difficulty for many to take personal responsibility for our actions. Forgiveness is the way God opens the path of goodness after our own choices have blocked it. In the sacrament of Reconciliation we learn to acknowledge the damage we do and seek to transform it through the power of God’s mercy and grace. National Migration Week highlights mission to welcome the newcomer WASHINGTON (CNS) -- "Creating a Culture of Encounter" is the theme of 2017's National Migration Week, an annual observance the U.S. Catholic bishops began over 25 years ago. Taking place Jan. 8-14, the week "is an excellent opportunity to highlight biblical tradition and our mission to welcome the newcomer," said Bishop Joe S. Vasquez of Austin, Texas, who is chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Migration. "While the observance is only a week long, it is a vital time to show welcome, compassion and solidarity with our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters," he added in a statement. With over 65 million people forcibly displaced from their homes globally, the world is increasingly affected by migration. The USCCB said goals of National Migration Week include educating Catholic communities about migration and urging Catholics to come together to encounter immigrants and refugees in parishes, dioceses and the wider community.
