St. Vincent de Paul Society In the Gospel today Jesus gives us the Beatitudes, which embody a radically alternative vision of life and we find that God indeed calls us to blessedness. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to proclaim the good news of the kingdom to the poor, by assisting families with funds for food, utility and rent bills.

When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you give hope to your neighbors who have nothing. To give thanks for all that God has given to you, have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Call the parish center at 676-0676 for details.

National Catholic Schools Week is January 29 — February 4, 2017. Our theme is Catholic Schools — Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service, concepts at the heart of Catholic education. Our schools build community, share faith, increase our students' knowledge and encourage dedication to service. At our schools one encounters teachers, administrators, and parents committed to making sure that each student lives up to his or her potential to learn and to be formed in the Catholic faith. Catholic schools have a rich history in supporting the work of on-going evangelization of the Catholic community in the United States. Our schools are built on the bedrock of the teachers and administrators who dedicate their time and talents to educating all children. We must also recognize our priests, religious and support staff for the work they do each and every day to spread the Gospel to our young people. Together we make great things happen on a daily basis in our Catholic schools. Our schools focus daily on the value of Catholic education and the contribution it makes to our Church, communities and to the world. Our Catholic elementary and high schools are wonderful examples of academic and spiritual excellence, committed to always growing in faith and living the Gospel. Come and see this for yourselves during Catholic Schools Week See our Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service in action.

A Man For All Seasons

Take Five for Faith Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, January 29 Twenty billion dollars a year. That’s how much it’s estimated Catholic schools save the United States annually. As we observe Catholic Schools Week, celebrate the accomplishments behind these statistics: 6,600 parochial schools are staffed by more than 150,000 dedicated teachers K-12. The graduation rate from our schools is 99 percent. The percentage of our students who go on to college is 84 percent. Just as our teachers make sacrifices to create these “communities of faith, knowledge, and service,” so too do parents surrender comforts to ensure their kids learn faith and character along with the facts. Support our schools! Monday, January 30 The expression “inner demons” captures something of the helplessness that those in the grip of negative behaviors feel. The ancients took that phrase literally, believing that illness was due to divine punishment for sin or demons taking up temporary residence in a person. The remedy was to seek forgiveness or a healer who could rid you of the bad spirits. While most people nowadays don’t believe that sicknesses and personality problems come from evil spirits or God’s wrath, there is still the need for reaching out to others for help when you cannot help yourself. Medical and other professionals, counselors, family, friends, and especially Jesus the Healer in prayer provide that assistance. Tuesday, January 31 Memorial of St. John Bosco Saint John Bosco was born in Italy in 1815 into a family of farm workers. He became a priest and a teacher, devoting his life to the care and education of abandoned and neglected children. His approach was considered novel at the time: He used love instead of the threat of punishment to shape the behavior of his students. How can you support teachers and those who care for children? What are some ways you, in the spirit of John Bosco, can extend love, compassion, and respect to children, especially those most in need? Wednesday, February 1 Would you ever consider stopping all you are doing and going in an entirely different direction? With obligations to family and jobs it’s unlikely you would suddenly turn your back on your responsibilities to pursue something else, but in a way that’s what the first apostles did. Their recognition of Jesus as the savior was immediate and their decision to literally drop everything was just as abrupt. They saw

something so compelling and necessary for their lives that they had no hesitation in following him on the spot. You might not imitate their footloose example to the letter, but their actions do show how quick disciples of Jesus should be, whatever their situation, to respond without hesitation! Thursday, February 2 Feast of the Presentation of the Lord In addition to being the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Jerusalem Temple, the church also calls today Candlemas. From early times the church has blessed candles for the year on this day. Your parish may be blessing candles sometime this week. If so, take some candles to church to be blessed. Their light will warm your home, especially in the darkness of winter, and remind you of Christ, the Light of the World. Even the lowly groundhog gets into the act today, emerging from his hole to look for the sun. Friday, February 3 Memorial of St. Blaise People instinctively turn to friends for help in difficult times. Because Catholics believe that in the communion of saints all believers, living and dead, are connected in Christ, we turn for help to saints who may intercede for us. Today is the feast of Saint Blaise, fourth-century bishop of Sebastean, Armenia. Legend has it that before his martyrdom he healed many, including a boy choking on a fish bone. In churches around the world today, Catholics will be getting their throats blessed and hearing, “Through the prayers of Saint Blaise, may God free you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil.” Amen. Saturday, February 4 Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary The monk and author Thomas Merton wrote: “There is no true solitude except interior solitude.” Solitude does not have to be a physical place, though it can be, nor does it have to involve silence, though it might. Rather, as Merton said, solitude is an inner space where you can rest quietly and alone in God’s presence—with no expectations and perhaps no words either—and experience the grace of God for what it is: a freely given gift you do not have to earn. Today, a Saturday and the traditional day for remembering Mary, join her in solitude to keep “all these things in your heart.” Reprinted with permission from TakeFiveForFaith.com

Please consider making a gift to the 2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal. For more information, to watch our video or to make a donation, visit CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre for the past 15 years, I have had the great honor and privilege of serving and ministering to our Catholic family on Long Island. Witnessing first hand your incredible generosity, I thank you.

Because of your commitment, our Diocese is able to support critical charitable, educational and spiritual ministries which bring the light of the Lord to more than 600,000 people each year, including new initiatives that truly highlight what we can only do with your support. We are continually developing programs for our young people who are so important for the future vitality of our Church. On College Campuses across Long Island, a new program was recently created called the Newman Connection. Its purpose is to give high school students the ability to locate a Catholic presence on their new college campuses even before leaving home for college. Working with high schools and parishes - in its first year more than 2,000 students connected through this innovative program. Our Vocation Office works closely with pastors, high school and college chaplains, sports and youth groups, teachers and families to reach out to young men who are discerning a call to serve as Priests in our Diocese. Throughout 2016 these many efforts included a monthly Diocesan Holy

Hour for Vocations, which more than 600 young people regularly attended. Our Office of Faith Formation continues to develop religious education programs and training to enhance their work with local parishes and their catechetical leaders to better serve the more than 100,000 youngsters from the first grade through the time they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. These are just some of the programs that you make possible and we are so deeply grateful for your extraordinary sacrifices to support the work of our Church. There is still so much more we can accomplish together, and I ask you to join with me in making a gift to the 2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal, and in welcoming our new Bishop, Most Reverend John Barres to our wonderful community. Your generosity and commitment fills me with confidence that many wonderful things will continue to take place in our Diocese as we bring the light of the Lord to others. With my prayers and gratitude, I am Sincerely yours in Christ,

Apostolic Administrator
