What is FSS? The 316th Force Support Squadron is responsible for providing military members, their families, DoD civilians, and retirees of Joint Base Andrews with a variety of quality of life and support services to complete the mission!
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
T
he Transition Assistance Program is designed to make separation or retirement from service a well-planned, organized, and thoughtful progression that empowers Service Members to make informed career decisions, be competitive in a global workforce, and become positive contributors to their communities. Service Members are required to initiate the TAP process no later than 365 days from the date of separation or retirement. However, the process cannot begin until within 24 months from retirement or within 18 months from separation. You can find a comprehensive timeline for the entire process here: https://www.dodtap.mil/resources.html Managing Your Transition Time Your transition to civilian life is a significant event whether you have served 6 or 26 years. Begin your transition process by planning well in advance, even if that is over 365 days away. In fact, a large majority of our service 4

members request to take the mandated course more than once because of the plethora of information discussed. Also note, that TAP courses are available not only for the service member but for the spouse as well. Spouses are in fact encouraged to attend all of the mandated and optional courses. If you wait until you are closer to your date of separation or retirement the more difficult it will be for you to accomplish certain tasks and possibly hinder the availability of optional programs such as Skillbridge. November Tours From Recreational Services (formerly “Outdoor Recreation”)
Intro to Mountain Biking at Rosaryville State Park Sun 7 Nov | 8:30am-3:00pm Cost: $30 per person. Experience the thrill of mountain biking with our enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructors! You’ll practice various riding techniques, including body and pedal position, shifting, braking, climbing, descending, and navigating minor obstacles on the trail. We’ll also go over important communication skills and mountain biking trail etiquette with the aim of keeping multi-use trails open and safe for everyone. Bring your own bike, or get one from us for no extra charge!
Shenandoah Fall Foliage Hike at Little Devil’s Stairs Sat 13 Nov | 8:00am-6:00pm Cost: $11 per person. We’ll hike a 5.5 mile loop at a comfortable pace, enjoying the beauty of Shenandoah around this time of year! Our hike begins by following the trail, up a steep climb past several waterfalls.
Shenandoah Fall Foliage Hike at White Oak Canyon Sat 20 Nov | 8:00am-6:00pm Cost: $11 per person. See White Oak Canyon transformed by the colorful leaves of autumn. It’s a breathtaking complement to the waterfalls we’ll see as we explore Appalachia at its best! Following a sometimes steep trail, we’ll hike 6 miles at a brisk pace, gaining about 2000’ of elevation along the way, all the while learning all about the surrounding ecosystem. (Lunch will be provided as well as transportation from the Outdoor Recreation building: 1235 Menoher Dr.) Stop by Recreational Services (1235 Menoher Dr.) to sign up!
