New Place To Ride In Florida Off-highway vehicle enthusiasts in Collier County, Fla., who have been waiting for more than a decade for a place to ride may soon have a new OHV park. In 2003, riders were promised a new place to ride after being forced out of the Picayune Strand State Forest as part of an Everglades restoration project. For one reason or another over the years, the new riding facility never materialized. Now, county officials have preliminary approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to build a riding park on 300 acres at the Immokalee airport. To get full approval, the county needs to conduct an environmental review and submit a plan showing that the facility will be self-supporting.
Pennsylvania Township Considers Road Use Residents in Rush Township in central Pennsylvania are asking township officials to allow ATVs to use some township roads to access the Snow Shoe Rails to Trails system. Officials are exploring the possibility,
Minnesota To Add More ATV Trails One of the more ATVfriendly states in the country is about to get even friendlier. State and local groups in Minnesota, are looking for money to create a connecting trail linking the Mille Lacs Lake area, which is 100 miles north of Minneapolis, with the existing ATV Northwoods Trail. Meanwhile, two ATV projects are planned in Aitkin County, about 120 miles north of Minneapolis. The Mille Lacs Lake project would involve linking the southeast part of the Mille Lacs Lake area to the Northwoods system to help boost the local economy. The state Department of Natural Resources has been reviewing possible land for the trail, which would give ATV riders access to places to eat and spend the night. Officials are hoping to get $1.5 million from the legislature for the project. In Aitkin County, officials plan to create both a technical riding area and a trail. The technical riding

Construction is expected to begin soon and be completed by September. Once finished, it will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 15 through Oct. 31. For the County Road 3 trail, officials say plans for building the road allow for designating an ATV trail. The 6-mile first phase project—from County Road 5 near Palisade to a quarter mile from Rat Lake—will get under way this summer. The $160,000 project is partially funded with a grant from the state Department of Natural Resources. The 9-mile second phase of the project that will continue to Highway 65 is expected to be completed in 2018 or 2019. The trail would be open May 15 through Oct. 31.
Alabama Riders Getting New Riding Area Alabama state park officials have received a $526,000 grant to create an ATV trail system at the Buck’s Pocket State Park near Guntersville. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs approved the federal grant. Officials say that due to the extreme terrain, it will take time to plan the trail.

The Hutchinson, Kan., City Council hopes to lease an ATV park to a group to operate instead of being forced to shut the facility down. The park has been the subject of noise, dust, property damage and safety complaints. In fact, the city of South Hutchinson asked Hutchinson to shut down the park, which is accessed through South Hutchinson, over these issues. Riders were given the opportunity to come up with a plan to keep the facility open. As a result, the city plans to lease the facility to a group that will manage it and try to reduce activities that lead to nuisance complaints. Under the plan, riders would need to pay membership fees for access to the facility. The fees are estimated to be $100 per year for a rider or $200 per year for a family.

Know Before You Go Tips To Enjoy The Ride For any trail ride, preparation is key. Registration must be up to date, safety needs to be at front of mind, and your quad needs to be ready to ride. Before heading out for family fun, call ahead or check the site’s website for information. That way you can plan properly. Do the children need proof that they have passed an approved ATV rider safety class? Do the quads need a state OHV sticker? Are spark arrestors required? One way to find places to ride is to check out the ATV Riding section of www.americanmotorcyclist.com. There, you will find descriptions of public and private riding areas in many states. National forests are great places to ride and you can get all the information you need at www.fs.fed.us. Besides the U.S. Forest Service, the federal Bureau of Land Management manages land that allows off-highway vehicle riding. To find those areas, start at www.recreation.gov. Some areas simply have no public land nearby. Here, your best bet will be private riding parks where the park owners charge a fee to ride. Little Sahara State Park: Waynoka, Okla.
Imagine riding an ATV for a half a mile underground through an old abandoned limestone mine. Sound like fun? You get that opportunity, and much more, at the Mines and Meadows ATV Resort in Wampum, Pa., about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh. The Mines and Meadows ATV Resort offers visitors guided mine tours, 43 miles of groomed trails, camping, ATV rentals and even quad storage. The Little Sahara State Park in Waynoka, Okla., is a 1,520-acre sand playground that offers many different types of riding within the dunes. To the west and northwest are the largest dunes, offering fantastic views, especially of sunsets with the Glass Mountains in the distance. In the middle there are cottonwood trees, yucca plants and stands of tall grass that form trails. The entrance to the park is four miles south of Waynoka on highway 281. This area includes primitive

Millican Plateau Trail System: Prineville, Ore. Most people don’t think of central Oregon as the place to go to get in some desert riding, but the Millican Plateau Off-Highway Vehicle Trail System offers a variety of great desert riding experiences. The trail system, which is near Prineville, has 111 miles of trails open to ATVs and off-road motorcycles. Horse riders, mountain bikers and others also share the trails, so be sure to respect the rights of other users. There are three staging areas: Four Corners, Alfalfa Curves and Corrals. The 2016 ProX ATV Motocross National Championship presented by CST Tires, an AMA National Championship, continued April 23 at the iconic Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tenn., with Maxxis-backed Joel Hetrick earning the overall win. As the gate dropped for the first moto, Honda-mounted David Haagsma jumped out to the early lead, ultimately claiming his first SSI Decals Holeshot Award of the season. However, it would not take long for his teammate, Hetrick, to make the pass for the lead and earn valuable seconds on the rest of the class. Meanwhile, Wienen Motorsports’ Chad Wienen was busy working his way up from a sixth place start. Wienen was able to make quick work of a majority of the racers but was set to battle for the second place position with JB Racing’s Thomas Brown. The top three racers consisting of Hetrick, Brown and Wienen were able to pull away from the rest of the pro class by the midway point of the moto. While Hetrick was running his own race, the Texas native Brown and defending champion Wienen were wheel-to-wheel resulting in some of the best racing thus far in the season. Hetrick encountered a spinout in a turn just after seeing the white flag, allowing Brown and Wienen to catch back up to him, creating a three-way-race for the win. However, the positions would stay the same as they crossed the finish line with Hetrick taking gold in the first moto followed by Brown and Wienen. Once the 30-second board turned sideways and the gate dropped for the second moto, there was the familiar face of Baldwin Motorsports’ John Natalie getting the early lead and earning the second SSI Decals Holeshot Award of the day. Unfortunately, Brown overshot a turn going over a berm early in the race, and by the time he was able to rebound and get back onto the track he had already lost valuable positions needed to find himself on the box at the end of the moto. Wienen was able to improve his start position where he sat third as they checked through timing and scoring for the first time. Just like the first moto, the top three racers gapped the rest of the field, but this time there was a different addition to the group. Jeffrey Rastrelli was the second fastest qualifier and the JB Racing rider found himself sitting in

Illinois native was out in the clear he was untouchable. Hetrick would start the second moto in fourth, but worked his way past Rastrelli and Natalie for second where his set of 1-2 finishes were good enough to vault him to the top and claim the overall win. Wienen and Natalie would round out the podium behind Hetrick.

This year marks Joe Byrd’s 28th racing season racing, and he announced that it will be his last in the Pro ATV Motocross National Championship presented by CST Tires, an AMA National Championship series. The two-time MX champ will continue his popular racing school. Byrd began his racing career at the age of 9 before progressing up the ranks of ATV racing, where he won two coveted AMA Pro Racing National Championship titles in 2006 and 2007. With more than 35 professional class wins to date, Byrd captured the heart of fans rather quickly with his dedication for racing on four wheels. Today Byrd serves as the oldest racer in the ATV Pro Motocross class. Though his days of full-time competition on the No. 7 Honda are drawing to a close, Byrd will still have his eyes set on adding one last AMA national championship to his resume. “The plan is for this year to serve as my farewell tour,” Byrd says. “I’ve been blessed with such a successful career and it’s been great. I plan on

staying involved in the sport as a team owner and a trainer for the next national champion.” Besides his success on the track, Byrd is also known for the Byrd Training Facility which opened in 2014. However, Byrd has been giving back to the sport by training the future stars with his racing schools since 1993. He even opened an aviation company where he
has the opportunity to fly racers to longdistance events. “Joe has been a tremendous ambassador for our series,” says MX Sports Pro Racing CEO Carrie Russell. “His work both on and off the track has made a difference in the lives of many of our racing families. The best racers on the planet compete in AMA-sanctioned events, whether the competition involves cross country, motocross, extreme dirt track, hare scrambles or hill climb. Here’s a quick look at two of them.
ATV NEWS: How old are you and where do you live? CHAD WIENEN: I am 31 years old, and I am from Galena, Ill. AN: What do you race? CW: I race in AMA ATV Pro Motocross,
and I ride a Yamaha YFZ450R. AN: How did the 2015 season go for
you?
CW: The 2015 season went great. I won
my fourth consecutive AMA ATV Pro MX championship. AN: Who was your toughest competition and why? CW: Last season definitely had the most competition I have had in the most recent years. [Joel] Hetrick and I battled throughout the entire season and put on some really good races. AN: What was your first race? What was it like? CW: My first race was a local race in Warren, Ill. I went to the race with some of my friends from back home and I was leading the race and then I crashed going to the whoops, but I was hooked. AN: What do you like about racing in an AMA MX ATV series? CW: I love the competition of the AMA ATV series. The best riders from all over the world come to the States to perform and compete in the series. It’s because the competition is so high and the tracks are some of the best. AN: What are your plans for 2016? CW: To continue to ride consistently to

CW: I really enjoy a lot of activities that have to do with physical training, whether it’s mountain biking, road biking, running or golf. And I spend quality time with my family and friends. any better! I was consistent all year long. I won the Pro-Am championship, placed fifth in my rookie year in Pro and was nominated the 2015 Rookie of the Year. AN: Who was your toughest competition and why? NG: I would say Cam Covil. He has always been a great rider. He usually starts out front and is a tough to catch if he gets out front early. He has speed, that’s for sure.
one thing was at RedBud. I pretty much had the championship locked up in ProAm and only had to finish in the top four to win the championship. I placed second in the first moto, and in the second moto I had multiple mechanical issues. But just as things couldn’t get any worse, I ended up getting stung by a bee that got inside my helmet during moto two! Sometimes when your day just keeps getting worse, it can be funny. It depends on how you deal with it. The situation is what you make of it. AN: What was the most heart-breaking thing to happen to you during the 2015 season? NG: I would say at RedBud when I didn’t wrap up the Pro-Am championship early. It was heart breaking because I wanted to win it early and have no stress or pressure coming into Loretta’s. It was what it was, but I had one goal only: to win the Pro-Am championship. I was hyper focused, put my head down and charged to go after what I had worked so hard for all season. It was mine and nobody was going to take it from me. AN: What was your first race? How old were you? What was it like?

When I came off the track, my Mom asked me, “So, what did you think?” I told her, “I can do this.” AN: What do you like about racing in the AMA ATV Motocross series? NG: I like that it’s taken seriously and I think it’s run very well for the most part. I also love the fans. We are nothing and nobody without our fans and the fans personally fuel me. AN: What are your plans for this year? NG: My plans are to race the pro class and
move forward on my results from last year, which was fifth. I trained in Texas for most of the off-season on a private track, and have a very intense workout program as well. In total, I train six days per week. AN: What are your hobbies? What do you
do in your free time not related to ATVs? NG: My hobbies are anything dirt- and motor-related. Whether it’s riding pitbikes, building tracks, teaching riding schools and recently I’ve been flying planes to achieve my private pilot’s license. AN: What would people be surprised to know about you? NG: Well, there are a few things: I love to laugh. I love pranks. I’m extremely protective of my three sisters. They are the ones I prank the most. And I am very frugal with money and respect that every dollar is hard earned whether it’s mine or not.
