COOL HELMET! I was recently speaking to someone at work who just got his motorcycle permit and was preparing for the road test. I was amazed to hear he could take the test on an 80cc automatic scooter. No clutch! Fortunately, this individual has years of dirt-bike riding experience and knows all about a clutch. But what about other riders who test on a scooter and then get on motorcycle that has a clutch? K. Boris Leiningen Port Monmouth, NJ AMA No. 341501 Obviously, the best way to learn to ride a motorcycle is by learning to ride a motorcycle. That’s why we always recommend the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic RiderCourse. In many states, the course even allows a rider to bypass the skills part of the license test if completed. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer 4HSJVST :TP[O KLĂ„ LK [OL SH^ HUK sold youth-model dirtbikes and ATVs.

Some Youth-Model Motorcycles Back On Dealership Floors But The Need For Pressure To Fix Bad Law Remains Youth-model motorcycles and ATVs, W\SSLK VMM KLHSLYZOPW Ă… VVYZ MVY TVU[OZ after being caught in a federal law aimed at children’s playthings, are back on sale in motorcycle shops across the country—at least partially. At least one manufacturer, Kawasaki, is telling dealers not to sell 50cc dirtbikes and ATVs. In May, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted to delay enforcement of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which was designed to protect children from lead in toys that might easily end up in children’s mouths but unintentionally ensnared youth-model motorcycles and ATVs. The stay, which extends through May 1, 2011, follows a unanimous vote by Acting Chairwoman Nancy Nord and Commissioner Thomas Moore. “Youth-model motorcycles and ATVs should be exempt from the law, and Congress needs to act to make that happen,â€? says Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. “Hopefully, this stay will give Congress the [PTL P[ ULLKZ [V Ă„ _ [OPZ SH^ HUK ^L ^PSS continue to work with federal legislators and our partners in the industry to make certain that it does. “While we applaud the CPSC commissioners’ vote to stay enforcement of the law, this doesn’t solve the real issue, which is the law itself.â€?

Despite the stay, the sale of youthmodel motorcycles and ATVs is still technically illegal, and it is unclear whether state attorneys general will also decline to enforce the CPSIA. Still, it appears that dealers are returning to the practice of selling youth-model machines and parts— and none too soon for the racing season that has already started ramping up. However, the move merely signals the Z[HY[ VM H Ă„ NO[ PU *VUNYLZZ [V L_LTW[ motorcycles and ATVs from the CPSIA. “Motorcyclists and ATV riders need to let Congress know that we are concerned about the law, and that we want kids’ offhighway vehicles excluded from the law,â€? says Moreland. Heavy Hitter New Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Gets More Than A Facelift U.S. motorcycle sales may be struggling in some segments, but demand for touring cruisers is rising. Kawasaki is aiming to capitalize on that trend with a full-on re-do of one of its most popular cruisers, reincarnated as the Vulcan 1700. The new frame is lighter, stiffer and more compact. Air-adjustable shocks improve ride quality and revised chassis geometry make low-speed handling easier. The engine is a liquid-cooled, SOHC, fuel-injected 52-degree V-Twin producing a claimed 108 lb.-ft. of torque. Mr. Mladin, Your New Motorcycle Is Ready New GSX-R1000 Superbike Rolls Out Production delays last winter meant that the 2009-model Suzuki GSX-R1000 could not be homologated for use at the beginning of this year’s AMA Pro Superbike Championship. At the last minute, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team actually had to buy some ’08 Gixxers from a Suzuki dealer and build them up to American Superbike specs. Six-time AMA Superbike champion Mat Mladin UVUL[OLSLZZ ^VU [OL ÄYZ[ LPNO[ V\[ VM UPUL races in his usual dominant fashion. 0U (WYPS [OL ÄYZ[ » .:? 9 Z ÄUHSS` arrived on U.S. shores, and Suzuki invited American Motorcyclist to test the new machine at Willow Springs Raceway, in the Mojave desert north of Los Angeles. The track’s slogan, “The Fastest Road in the West” is no empty boast. It’s one of the few places where a modern literbike can stretch its legs. About the only part that was carried V]LY [V [OL UL^ TVKLS ^HZ [OL M\LS ÄSSLY cap. Everything else is all-new. The key changes include a new Kayaba “big piston” fork, stiffer monobloc brake

calipers, a shorter-stroke motor with higher compression and larger titanium valves, and a stacked gearbox that allowed Suzuki’s chassis engineers to ZOVY[LU [OL ^OLLSIHZL ^OPSL Ä[[PUN H longer swingarm. Despite ever more stringent emissions requirements that necessitate a capacious exhaust, the new IPRL PZ HSZV ZPNUPÄJHU[S` SPNO[LY Although the engine’s stroke has been shortened (and bore increased, obviously) the ’09 GSX-R1000 still has the longest stroke among the Big Four’s literbikes. At 6,500 rpm, twisting the throttle produces that familiar wave of Suzuki torque. The new motor makes power in such a smooth, seamless way that I only realized P[ ^HZ H IVUH ÄKL Z\WLYIPRL ^OLU 0 glanced down at the speedometer on Willow Springs Raceway’s front straight and saw an indicated 168 mph on the speedometer in fourth gear. The dashboard includes a useful gear indicator and programmable shift lights. The now-familiar Drive Mode Selector still offers A, B and C modes (full power,

a slightly softer mode and a wet-riding mode that cuts power to about 600cc levels). There also are stopwatch and lap counter capabilities. The GSX-R1000 is relatively easy to throw a leg over. You sit in this bike, not perched on it. The seat height is low, the seat cushion offers a modicum of padding, and the seat-to-footpeg relationship is tolerable. Add in reasonable wind protection and the result is one of the few pure sportbikes that could, in a pinch, see duty as a commuter. Even the mirrors work pretty well. The genius of Suzuki’s engineers has long been to build a motorcycle that gives professional racers what they want and ordinary street riders what they need. If the new motor is—as Suzuki hopes—more tunable under the current American Superbike rules, I bet Mladin will continue his winning streak on it. Riding at my level, the new bike corners and stops with a lot more poise. It’s in Suzuki dealers now, with an MSRP of $12,899.—Mark Gardiner

Pro dirt-tracker Nichole Cheza cut her teeth at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships.

3 Questions With‌Nichole Cheza 2009 AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships Honoree Many racers at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships, set for June 27-July 4 in Du Quoin, Ill., have the same goal: break into the pro ranks. Every summer, a rider who has made the transition is invited back to show them it can be done. For 2009 that rider has already made an impact on the sport, even though her career is still young: Nichole Cheza. Cheza, from Clio, Mich., joins riders such as Chris Carr, Kenny Coolbeth and JR Schnabel in holding the special honor. AM: So, Nichole, what attracted you to this role? NC: Honestly, I just really like kids, and I think that it’s great that more kids are getting involved in the sport of dirt track. I see a lot more young girls getting involved these days, and I think it’s really cool that they have someone to look up to. AM: How long did you compete at the AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships? NC: I started when I was about 6, and I rode the event until I was 16. It was always a great week of fun. You get to be there

Close, but not close enough Mat Mladin’s quest for a record-setting eight wins in a row in AMA Pro Superbike competition was shut down at the No. 7 mark, with Josh Hayes stealing the potentially record-breaking win on his Yamaha R1 at round one of the Sonoma, Calif., double-header. Mladin started strong on his Suzuki, looking to put a lock on the eighth win. Then Ben Bostrom made a dramatic pass going into Turn 1 on the third lap. So, You Want To Be A Champion? Here’s How To Get There AMA Racing sanctions more motorsports events than any other organization on the planet. As such, there are a lot of national titles and No. 1 plates presented at the season-end AMA Racing championship banquet.

This year will be no different. AMA Racing will present honors and trophies celebrating racing accomplishments that riders will cherish for a lifetime—proof that in 2009, in their class, they were the best in the country.

While it’s challenging to reach the top, there are several paths to an AMA National Championship, due to the sheer number of disciplines AMA Racing sanctions. Details can be found at AMARacing. com.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

GRAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

AMA Racing National Championship series crown AMA Racing national champions based on results in multiple events at different venues across the country. Champions are honored in displacement-, skill- and age-based classes. The overall A, AA or Pro champion in each series represents the best in that discipline. These classes usually feature all riders in the same program, from novices to the country’s fastest riders.

AMA Racing Amateur Championships crown AMA Racing amateur national champions in a number of disciplines. While these are standalone events, not season-long series, they often take place over several days of racing. If you’re also a fan of the sport, these are often the best place to see tomorrow’s stars before they make it big. The season traditionally kicks off early with the AMA Racing Ice Race Grand Championships in February and rolls through early fall with the AMA Racing Road Race Grand Championships. Two events, the AMA Racing Ice Race Grand Championships and the AMA/USA Speedway Long Track National Championship, have already gone down, but several more are on tap for the rest of the year.

King Of The Hill Earl Bowlby Hillclimber Celebrates BSA As AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days Marque Of The Year Few other racebikes are as custom as purpose-built hillclimbers, and 10-time AMA Champion Earl Bowlby’s 1967 BSA is a classic example. The bike started life as a 1967 BSA 650. But Bowlby didn’t turn it into a race machine until 1976, four years after BSA went out of business. “I had been the only BSA dealer in the area,â€? Bowlby says, “and I had too much knowledge and luck with BSAs over the years to change.â€? He gave it a stroker crank and bored P[ V\[ YLZ\S[PUN PU H JJ Ă„UHS WYVK\J[ Since ordinary pistons wouldn’t stand the abuse of the nitromethane fuel allowed

in hillclimb racing, he had Venolia make him a set. In the transmission, every gear was removed except fourth, and the empty cavity was used as an oil reservoir for the engine. The main section of the frame, meanwhile, is original BSA, but the extended rear subframe and rigid swingarm, designed to keep the bike from looping under power on steep hills, were fabricated by Bowlby. Finally, he created a tiny, lightweight front brake in keeping with a rule that said all hillclimb machines must have an operating Z[VWWLY HUK OL Ă„[[LK [PYL JOHPUZ VU [OL YLHY for added traction on the hills. When Bowlby completed the bike, he

went straight to the 1976 Nationals in Muskegon, Mich., where he set a record with his new machine. And he continued winning on it well into the ’80s, before moving on to—you guessed it—another BSA. In 1991, Earl Bowlby retired after 25 years of competition. He was 57 years old, had won championships in four different KLJHKLZ HUK ÄUPZOLK OPZ JHYLLY HZ [OL champion of the 800cc pro hillclimb class. Bowlby’s 1967 BSA hillclimber is just one of the historic machines on display at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum at AMA headquarters in Pickerington, Ohio. And as a bonus, visitors to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, set for July 24-27 at MidOhio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, will be able to see the machine in person as part of a display that honors BSA as the event’s Marque of the Year.

Genevieve Schmitt is a longtime print editor, currently with American Iron magazine, who launched her own online magazine, WomenRidersNow. com, in 2005, and followed up with two additional online publications: TrikeRidersNow.com and ScooterRidersNow.com, which are aimed at both male and female enthusiasts. ON HER INTRODUCTION TO MOTORCYCLES // I was working for Good Morning America in 1990, and I was assigned a story on women who rode. I gathered up about 15 women riders, and I was just stunned by all these amazing women on motorcycles. I interviewed them and enjoyed their energy and spark so much that I said, “I want to do this.” ON HER PATH // You know, I’m a professional. A lot of people come to our industry as a rider, and then [OL` RPUK VM Ä N\YL V\[ ^OH[ [OL` JHU do. I’m a businessperson who just OHWWLULK [V Ä UK H OVII` 0 SPRL HUK thought, “What can I do to make this a business?” I never expected to be the one raising the women-inmotorcycling banner, but I stepped back and looked at it from a business standpoint, and I knew I wanted to present it in a fair way, as opposed to, “Hey, we’re women riders, give us attention.” It wasn’t about that. It was about making motorcycling acceptable to all riders, including women. ON THE CHANGES SHE’S WITNESSED // There wasn’t much recognition of women as a viable demographic until the late ’90s, when manufacturers realized they should be making more women’s motorcycling apparel, and they began including bike offerings with lower seat heights and more displacements. More women began to ride as a result, and then other women saw those women riding and said, “If she can do it, so can I.” Now there are an amazing number of women’s motorcycle clubs, which are great because they nurture new riders. ON WHAT SHE’S MOST PROUD OF // I’m most proud that my work— my articles on WomenRidersNow. com, my motivational speeches at dealerships and motorcycling events, and my monthly column in American Iron magazine—has inspired women to take up motorcycling. My goal has always been to provide an alternative viewpoint to the motorcycling experience—the viewpoint of a woman. If there are women who’ve come to motorcycling as a result, then I’ve done my job and I feel I’ve accomplished something.

ON REALIZING SHE WANTED TO RIDE // Every summer, my dad would throw us in a VW Bus for these twoto three-month vacations. I’ll never forget when I was 10: We were driving into South Dakota, and there were thousands of motorcycles. My brother and I had never heard of Sturgis, so our eyes were huge, and I knew right then that I would have a motorcycle. I bought Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance when I was 12. ON THE START OF HER TWOWHEELED TRAVELS // I upgraded to a Honda Rebel in my early 20s, when I was living in California, so I was riding big-time with a 250cc engine and I ^HZ ZV Å PWWPUN JVVS 0 JV\SKU»[ ILSPL]L it [laughs]. That was the beginning of falling in love with paved, two-lane roads that went to magical places. ON THE BEGINNING OF MAD MAPS // I’d fallen in love and moved to Boston with my husband, and I decided I was going to start a motorcycle touring company. Then I got pregnant, which made that a little KPMÄ J\S[ [V Ä N\YL V\[ 0U H ZP_ ^LLR class at Northeastern University, this very quiet, sweet, demure woman said to me, “Why don’t you do a project that’s a little simpler, like motorcycle maps?” The next day I went home and started calling dealerships across the country randomly, just asking if they had a motorcycle map for the area. Nobody had any idea what it was I was looking for, and I thought, “Wow—here’s an opportunity.” ON THE CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY // I think the fact that I was a rider helped enormously, but being a woman in business in general, you’re going to come across different types of attitudes or assumptions. I’ve had a few doors slammed in my face, but I either kick them back open, push them back open, or leave them closed for a while and go back later to see if they’ve been unlocked. I guess you could call me Tenacious J, because I am tenacious as hell. There’s always another solution, and if someone says UV `V\ JHU Ä UK ZVTLVUL LSZL ^OV»SS say yes.

When I said, “Marketing motorcycles to women,” he said, “Nobody is ever going to pay you to do that.” I sent him a Christmas card along with my business card last year. I never heard back from him. We also know there are a lot of women out there who maybe ULLK H SP[[SL IP[ VM OLSW VY JVUÄ KLUJL I\PSKPUN [V NL[ into the sport and build their skills. So, we started the “Share Your Spark” mentoring program. You can get more information at HarleyDavidson.com/womenriders in the “Mentoring” section. On a personal level, riding along with my senses heightened—the smells and sounds and sights are just clearer and stronger—it’s something that makes me feel very strong, too. It’s the intensity of the adventure that I want to share with others; to have them understand this amazing feeling you just can’t get anywhere else.

Jessica Prokup is the Motorcycle Industry Council’s director of emerging market communications, and her background includes on-air work and magazine editor work. By understanding the female consumer’s experience in the industry—and by using a variety of both traditional and high-tech tools (Twitter, anyone?)—she hopes to foster the growth of the women and Gen Y markets, as well as that of other often-overlooked twowheeled segments. ON THE WORST THING SHE’S LEARNED SINCE 2006 // I’ve led a sort-of charmed life as a rider, having joined a motorcycle magazine about 10 months after I started riding. So I didn’t really know what it was like to be your average consumer walking into a dealership, starting from square zero. I learned from listening to women who are not part of the industry, and I realize how far we have to go in terms of our dealerships welcoming women. ON THE BEST THING // I’ve become so impressed with women as consumers in general, because we’re so engaged, and we listen to each other more than anybody else. I’ve learned you can’t be an island. If you really and truly want to reach women and make a difference in their lives, you have to become part of a conversation with them. ON STUMBLING BLOCKS // I’m also an MSF RiderCoach, which puts me in direct contact with a lot of women, and I think for many of them P[»Z H JVUÄ KLUJL PZZ\L :VTL OH]L been talking themselves out of it for years. I’ve coached women who are doing great, doing everything right, and then they’ll suddenly do a quick stop and they’ll have tears running down their face, because they’re just so freaked out by what’s going on. And they’re doing everything right! So I think women themselves can be their own stumbling blocks, because so many just don’t think they can do it. ON WHAT SHE’S MOST EXCITED ABOUT RIGHT NOW // Being here at MIC in kind of the heart of the industry, I’ve realized that a lot of what we do is really important, really cool, and really misunderstood. So I think what I’m most psyched about is becoming more a part of the conversation and becoming better listeners, because if we can do those things, we’ll make way more headway.

SOUTH AMERICAN JOURNEY A Motorcycle Ride Becomes A New Way Of Life By Jeff Sherren

I

’m a lucky guy: I have a seasonal job. I get a pink slip when work is slow, so I can leave and be gone for extended periods. Not having a schedule means I can just go. After doing a motorcycle trip across Canada, and another across the United States, I decided it was time to ride to Mexico. Funny thing, though, a friend of mine asked me, “Why stop in Mexico?” I didn’t have a good reason, so I didn’t. I had not really planned on riding South America. It just happened. While riding I constantly thought about family and friends back home, suffering through a frigid Canadian winter while I was doing something none of them had ever considered. ([ Ä YZ[ P[ ^HZ HSS HIV\[ [OL YPKPUN Going down donkey trails in countries I had never learned about in school, JYVZZPUN YP]LYZ ^P[O ^LPYK Ä ZO PU [OLT HUK getting poor quality gas from buckets sold on the side of the road. The more I saw, however, the less the trip was about the riding. It was about meeting the people who lived on the donkey trail or across the river and sold me the gas. It was about dancing salsa until the wee

OV\YZ VM [OL TVYUPUN LH[PUN JVYU Å V\Y tortillas at a street stand and tasting cow eye soup. Riding south of the border was more about the opportunities that another culture provides. Not to mention the spectacular feelings of being in Mexico City, with 24 million other people, or being in the Altiplano, alone for what seemed like 24 million miles. This was what I appreciated most about the trip. Not only looking back at the stunning photos of Machu Picchu, volcanoes, glaciers, deserts and animals, but associating the stories and feelings that go along with simply getting there. Like the Velvet Elvis Restaurant in Mayan Mexico. Like the boy who I met when I took a short cut. Like the family in Peru that helped me when I blew up my water pump. This trip started off as something rather simple—just an idea of a ride. Over the miles, it changed into something more—the idea of a lifestyle. I don’t want to stop riding. Not just because of the freedom it offers, but also because of the opportunities that present themselves while on and off the road. I look for them now. I am addicted to them. July 2009

2 San Joaquin, Colombia Here’s how locals greeted me and Seida. First, the women would come out of the stores and take pictures with their cell phones. Then, the kids would come looking for their moms and ask us how fast the bikes went. Next, the TLU ^V\SK [Y` [V ÄUK [OLPY MHTPSPLZ and ask how much the bikes cost, tell us we were crazy for going so far into rural Colombia and offer advice on where it was safe to travel.

2 The Ruta 40 Annual Motorcycle Rally in Baracharla. This is where I met my friends Alfonso and Diego Morales. They own a high-tech auto shop, La Casa de Inyector and were nice enough to clean my carburetor using ultrasonic waves.

4` ÄYZ[ Z\YWYPZL PU ,J\HKVY Betty Mosquera was my best friend of the trip. Not a motorcyclist yet, she’s looking forward to becoming one. 7 The desert starts at the Peruvian border. It doesn’t take long for vultures to start circling. This area was once at the bottom of the ocean. The ground is covered with shells. Further up the road, oil pump jacks provide Peru with an estimated 112,000 barrels of oil a day and mark the limestone and conglomerate horizon.

6 This road is the long way between Baños and Cuenca, Ecuador. The green never ends here. It is amazing to see vertical rock cliffs covered in foliage. Baños is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream—perpetual warm weather, great valleys for rafting, bridges for bungee jumping and an excellent trail system for hiking and mountain biking. Motorcycles, quads and buggies are also rented in town.

10 Highlands of Peru, outside Huaraz. Simon Siggs lets his KLR rest for a few minutes. The Happy Trails panniers took a beating on this trip but held up well. Simon was riding on behalf of a charity organization for Fragile X, a genetic disease. You can see his journey and read about Fragile X here: http://fragilexpedition. blogspot.com.

Guest Column

Husband And Wife Racers Jason and Emily Raines are the rarest of couples—a husband and wife who both race competitively, on the same courses. At presstime, Jason, who’s also the defending 2008 AMA Racing Eastern Hare Scrambles Champion, was fourth overall in the 2009 AMA Racing Rekluse National Enduro Championship Series, while Emily was fourth in the series’ women’s class. Jason: We both started riding when we were young, 5 and 4. Actually, we used to battle it out against each other when we were growing up in the 125 junior class in Washington state. Then I moved back east and started racing and did the national scene. I came back home, and we got together, and here we are racing. When I was racing her, she always got the best starts, and I always had to work around her. Emily: I think he was always a fast guy, ever since he was born. I didn’t ever really talk to him when we were kids, but everyone knew his name, even when we were younger. The funny thing is that when we look back at some of our parents’ videotapes of us racing, back when we

were kids at Seattle International Raceway, I swear, they had to be sitting right next to each other watching us. Jason: A lot of the racers’ wives ride, but there’s not a lot of competitiveness. In Washington, people know her, that she’s one of the top riders, but when we go someplace like Florida, we were practicing, and people are like, “Wow your wife really goes fast.” It’s surprising to them. It’s great. Emily: At the GNCC races, all the racers’ wives, we’re part of the pit crews. But it’s neat to get out there on the start line with him and ride at the same time. It’s not that I see him too much out there anyways. Sometimes we’ll be at a stop together and we can talk about things that are going on. I don’t think a lot of couples get to do that, and that’s neat. Jason: There’s always some competitiveness in anything we do. She’ll always be like, “Yeah, I’m getting into the ZLJ[PVU Ä YZ[ ILJH\ZL 0»SS NL[ H IL[[LY Z[HY[ than you,” and I’ll be like, “Yeah, and I’m going to plow you down when I come up on you.” It’s fun. We train together and push each other. No matter what, we want

by Jason and Emily Raines to beat each other. Emily: 0 [OPUR WLVWSL OH]L H WYVÄ SL PU mind of a woman racer or something, but I like seeing now that women are feminine and can be girly and race hard—especially the Women’s Motocross Association riders. Now there are a lot of beautiful girls who race, and I think that’s a good thing for young women to look up to. Jason: One of the best things about KVPUN [OL ZHTL YHJL PZ [OH[ `V\ JHU YLÅ LJ[ on things that you’d never see if you didn’t race—how bad the sand whoops were or how tough this section is. Having her out there going through the same motions as I am, she may have her own experiences, but we both remember and can talk about things the same way. Emily: >L KLÄ UP[LS` JHU YLSH[L >L»YL both nervous before the race, so we’re both kind of quiet. At the same time, when we go home, and it’s just Monday through Friday, we don’t talk a lot about dirt biking. We’re surrounded by it, and it is our life, but we talk about the same things everyone else does, things like the grocery bill and everything else, but it’s all fun.
