Tread Lightly! Honors American Motorcyclist Association The American Motorcyclist Association was among those recently honored by the national nonprofit outdoor advocacy group Tread Lightly! Tread Lightly! recognized groups, individuals and corporations that have made significant contributions to protecting and enhancing outdoor recreation access through education and stewardship during the past 25 years. The organization presented the AMA with a “Founding Partner” plaque during Tread Lightly!’s 25th Anniversary Celebration in Washington, D. C., late last year. “The AMA was an original Tread Lightly! member in 1990 and has maintained membership from the very start,” says Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations. “We are fortunate to have such an active and effective partner in our efforts to promote responsible off-highway recreation.”

Utah Elected Officials Ordered To Pay $96,000 For Illegal ATV Ride Two Utah elected officials who took part in an illegal ATV ride to protest a land closure have been ordered to pay more than $95,000 for damages. A federal judge in October ordered San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman and Monticello City Councilman Monte Wells to pay the bill to repair riparian areas and archeological sites in Recapture Canyon, where they rode with other protesters. Approximately 30 riders were protesting the fact that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management had closed the canyon to off-road riding. The BLM closed the canyon in 2007. Lyman and Wells organized the May 2014 ride to protest federal public land policies. They were arrested and convicted of misdemeanors. They had been charged with a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to operate off-highway vehicles on public land closed to OHVs and one count of operating an OHV on public land closed to OHVs. Two others who were arrested were acquitted.

Forest Service officials claimed that Alt caused extensive damage by building the trail in the Custer-Gallatin National Forest. Alt built the trail from his private property.

Macedonia, Ohio, Now Regulating ATV Use

Officials in Jackson County in west-central Wisconsin are moving ahead with an economic impact study of ATV trails even though the study has received fewer survey responses than anticipated. Officials hoped to get around 350 responses but only received about 150. Even so, officials aren’t giving up. The county is home to 110 miles of ATV trails. State and county officials hope to get a handle on how much money the trails bring into the area. The survey of riders ended in October and the information is now being analyzed. Officials believe the information will be useful for managing the trails.

More Motorized Routes May Be Created In Wyoming Forest The U. S. Forest Service is considering options for recreational opportunities in the Medicine Bow National Forest in Wyoming, including an update of the area’s motorized road system between Laramie and Cheyenne. Among the questions being addressed are the status of high-use unauthorized routes, the possible

conversion of some existing roads to ATV use, the flexibility of seasonal closing dates and the designation of dispersed camping sites. The agency expects to reach final decisions this year. More information is available from the Forest Service office at 2468 Jackson St., Laramie, WY 82070, or by phone at (307) 745-2300.

California’s Johnson Valley To Be Closed For The Month Of August The U. S. Marine Corps plans to close the Johnson Valley Shared Use Area in Southern California during the month of August to conduct military training. Under the terms of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2014, 53,000 acres in Johnson Valley were designated as a shared-use area that could be used for military purposes 60 days each year.
