Currently, the zoo creates a mostly flat landscape in the south east of the site, but that land once had interesting topography due to the citadel’s earthen embankments.

Topography:

Making a space where pedestrians want to spend their time and are easily able to do so is at the forefront of the design intent. Rising and falling topography along with vegetation that contrasts the hardscapes of the city draws vistors in and welcomes them to stay. Pedestrian amenities include: water features, dense tree canopies, secluded rest areas, interesting views, an amphitheater, a general purpose lawn, wide walkways that accomodate both biking and walking, and pieces of the citadel unearthed for public view for the first time in decades.

The citadel, the largest inspiration for this proposal, can be experienced in a multitude of ways while on the site. These methods of interaction fall into three categories: Unearthing, Earthworks, and Immitation. Diverse programming allows pedestrians to stay engaged across the site without chance of monotony.

Following the analysis of site history and topography, the location for the bridge, entrances, and interventions were determined. The bridge connects the sea to the rest of the city via Ciutadella Park, a space made more open through the demolition of existing fencing with respect to the new modernisme garden style covering the park extension. Unearthing History for New Use: Ciutadella Park Expansion Plan Site History:

Topography:

Ciutadella Park has a storied past of many plans, proposals, events, and construction projects. These all culminate to determine the current shape of the park physically and mentally, in the minds of the people.

Currently, the zoo creates a mostly flat landscape in the south east of the site, but that land once had interesting topography due to the citadel’s earthen embankments.
