5 ways to manage your checking account responsibly October 12, 2021 Whether you're a new checking account owner or if you just want to brush up on your money management tools, it's important to manage the account correctly. The FDIC estimates that 124.2 million American households had at least one member with a bank account, but not everyone is getting the most out of them. Let's look at some of the best tips and tricks to get you started on the path to success.

Be aware of your balance Because checking accounts were created to make transactions easier and often come with a debit card and checks, it's not difficult to lose track of how much money you have in your account. You can set alerts with an updated balance when money is spent and use available technology to stay on top of it.

Consolidate accounts Some people have several checking accounts that they have accumulated over the years but consolidating them could yield many benefits. This is an easy way to simplify your finances and can make money management easier. Having your finances spread across several checking accounts is unnecessary and can overcomplicate the process. Pick the most beneficial account and discuss your options with a banking professional to find the best one for you.

Be mindful of fees Some checking accounts have higher maintenance fees than others but being aware of them is key. Most of the time, it would make sense to go with a standard checking account that has low or no fees. Other fees to be conscious of include any that could be charged if your account balance falls below $0. In addition, if you withdraw money from your checking account through an ATM that doesn't belong to your bank, you may be charged a fee for the process. Communicate with your financial institution and be mindful of possible fees associated with checking accounts.

Review statements from your bank Every month, you should receive a statement from your bank that lists your spending and banking activity from that time frame. Whether you opt for a paper statement or an electronic one, it can be easy to let the mail fall to the wayside. However, if you keep track of your banking statements, it can be easier to watch your spending habits. This is also where changes in your minimum balance requirement, fees, or other account terms are often noted, so reading your bank statements is more valuable than you may think.

Automate Automation is an often undervalued or underused tool for checking account owners. Direct deposit is one example of automation that can be extremely valuable. In addition, most financial institutions including The Federal Savings Bank offer mobile check deposit options. Connect your bill payments to your checking account for a streamlined payment experience. Automation tools are available to elevate your checking account usage, so why not use them? 16 ESSENTIALS FOR WINTER ROAD TRIPS WITH KIDS

Packing for winter travel with kids in tow? You've probably got a lot on your mind, from keeping the kids warm and entertained to avoiding dangerous road conditions. Oh, and where do you put the skis and snow gear?! We're big fans of family road trips, no matter the season. That's why we've put together this list of 16 essential things to bring along on a winter road trip with kids.

ROAD TRIP SAFETY ESSENTIALS •

• • •

Ice scraper and brush: Keep an ice scraper and brush in your car for the entire winter. These tools will help you remove snow and ice from your windshield and windows, so you can have full visibility in wintry conditions (without waiting with your impatient kiddos for things to melt!). Sand/kitty litter: If you're driving in snowy conditions, you'll want to have a bag of sand or kitty litter on hand. If your car gets stuck, scatter either material in front of your tire to help create the traction your tires need to keep moving. Flares or reflectors: Drivers have decreased visibility at night, and it's even worse when you add snow to the mix. If the unfortunate happens and you're stuck on the side of the road, flares and reflectors will ensure other drivers see you. Shovel: A small, collapsible shovel won't take up too much space in your trunk and will be an invaluable tool if you find yourself stuck in deep snow. Jumper cables: Freezing temperatures can take a toll on your car's battery. Keep jumper cables on hand so you can get your car moving (and your heater blasting!) instead of waiting for a tow. Portable cell phone battery: Black ice, slick roads, and stressed drivers — there are plenty of things that can cause your road trip to go sideways in the winter. No matter the situation, a dead cellphone can make it worse! Keep a portable battery in the car so you can make sure your phone is ready to go in case you need to call for help. Flashlight: It gets dark early in the winter. Even if you don't plan on hitting the road at night, you may still find yourself in the dark. Keep a flashlight and extra batteries in your vehicle in case you get stranded or stuck.

WINTER ROAD TRIP WARMTH ESSENTIALS •

Blankets: Turn your car into a nap fort on wheels by bringing a cozy stack of blankets for long road trips with kids. Not only will these help your little ones catch some Z's on your way to your destination, but they're also an extra safety measure if you experience car troubles and can't rely on your heater. Coats: Even if you're going from a heated house straight into a heated car and then back into a heated house, it's important to always bring coats with you in your vehicle. If your car gets stuck or breaks down, you'll want to make sure everyone in the family is bundled up. Waterproof mittens/gloves: There's a reason your vehicle has a glove box! Stash a pair of waterproof gloves in your car just in case you need to change a tire or dig the wheels out of a snowbank. Make sure your children each have a warm pair as well. If you enjoy being super prepared, throw in a few hand warmer packs, too!

WINTER ROAD TRIP ENTERTAINMENT ESSENTIALS •

• •

Coloring books and stickers: Who doesn't love a good coloring or sticker book? Purchase a few new ones for the trip and, at the very least, your kids will be excited by the novelty. Plus, you'll get a few minutes of quiet time! Snacks: If you're looking for some tried and true road trip hacks with kids, look no further than the snack aisle. Half the fun of road tripping is packing special treats for the drive. For extra happy passengers, consider letting your kids each pick out one snack – ideally something that isn't too messy! Games: There's no better way to pass the time on a road trip than by playing family games. Pack miniature dry erase boards for games like Tic Tac Toe, Hangman, or Pictionary. "I Spy" and "20 Questions" are classics and don't require any special supplies. Tablets (plus charger): There is a time and place to limit screen time… and it's usually not on a road trip. Load up your tablet with videos (make sure to download them in case your service is spotty) and enjoy a peaceful drive. Music: Road trips are the perfect opportunity for a family sing-along. Take music requests before hitting the road, and let your kids take turns being the DJ! Books: It's the perfect compromise: one parent drives, the other one is on reading duty. Bring along a few of your family's favorite books, and see how many you can read before your audience is snoozing. If you tend to get carsick, download some kid-friendly podcasts, and have them do the storytelling for you!

7 Super-Easy Cleaning Recipes for the Most Awesome-Smelling Home

Essential oils are the key to these sweet-smelling (and highly effective!) homemade cleaners.

If you get light-headed just reading the ingredients on your cleaning products, take heart: There's another way. These make-in-minutes, super-cheap recipes create potions that use sweet-smelling essential oils that won't fumigate your home, while having superpowers to fight grime and bacteria. And much like a food recipe you may try, you can modify the oils to suit your own olfactory senses. Citrusy All-Purpose Cleaner

natural disinfectant, orange oil busts grease, and rosemary oil has some antibacterial and antiseptic qualities.

Lemon-Scented Window Cleaner • • •

2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar 2 cups filtered water 10 drops essential oil of lemon Mix all these ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray on any glass surface and polish in with a microfiber cloth. You'll have sparkling panes and mirrors in no time, and that wondrous essential oil of lemon will kill off the bacteria left behind by mucky fingerprints.

Eucalyptus Toilet Bowl Cleaner • • •

15 drops of essential oil of lemon 5 drops essential oil of sweet orange 5 drops essential oil of rosemary • 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar • 1-1/2 cups filtered water Funnel all these ingredients into a spray bottle, seal, and gently shake. There'll be a battle of odors here, with the acidic vinegar likely winning out against the sweet-smelling oils, but don't let this deter you. The vinegar scent disappears quickly, but that citrusy, herby zing lingers on. And these oils aren't just there for their scent alone. Lemon oil is a

• • • •

25 drops essential oil of eucalyptus 1/3 cup Castile soap 2 cups filtered water 1-1/3 cups baking soda Fill a squeeze bottle with the water, baking soda, and eucalyptus oil. Seal the bottle and shake. Next, add the Castile soap. Shake again. Squeeze around the bowl. Leave for 15 minutes, then scrub with a toilet brush, flush, and you're done. Aside from having a deliciously fresh aroma, eucalyptus is a natural germicide.

Lavender-Thyme Dish Cleaner

but its aroma also has soothing properties that can calm your whole household.

Lavender Linen Spray • •

6 drops of essential oil of lavender 2 tablespoons witch hazel • Filtered water Fill a spray bottle with the witch hazel and lavender. Shake, top off with water, shake again, and then spray away.

Cinnamon and Sandalwood Air Freshener

• • • • • •

20 drops essential oil of lavender 10 drops essential oil of thyme 5 drops of essential oil of tea tree 1 cup filtered water 1 cup liquid Castile soap 2 tablespoons baking soda This one does require some stovetop time: Bring the water to a boil, then mix in the oils. (Thyme and tea tree goes to war on salmonella while emitting a pleasant aroma along with lavender.) Add the rest of the ingredients slowly. After that, remove from heat and allow to cool. Once cooled, pour into a squeeze bottle. Shake gently before using.

Peppermint-Lavender Floor Cleaner • • • •

5 drops essential oil of peppermint 5 drops essential oil of lavender 5 drops of essential oil of tea tree 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar Pour the vinegar into a bucket, fill that bucket up with hot water and add the oils. Works on stone, tile, and wooden floors. Not only is peppermint oil anti-bacterial, many believe it can deter mice and other pests. Tea tree oil is antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal. Not only is lavender oil antibacterial, too,

• • •

10 drops essential oil of cinnamon 10 drops oil of sandalwood 1 cup filtered water A spritz of this subtle-but-effective scent erases stinks in seconds. Fill a spray bottle with the water and the oils. Cinnamon scent boosts brain power and sandalwood is calming -- perfect for a hardworking, stressed out home! Essential oils do mix, so if any of the scents in these recipes don't appeal, play around with other oils. Just keep the quantities the same. For example, if you switched sandalwood for orange oil in this air freshener, stick to the 10 drops specified in the recipe.

"Happy New-year! happy New-year!" It is the day of hope and a fresh beginning. Old debts shall be forgiven; old feuds forgotten; old friendships revived. To-day shall be better than yesterday.
