Fulfilling the UNESCO MANDATE: I am excited to say that “Runway Jazz” made its historic debut on the 30th of April, 2016, marking another milestone contribution by Nigeria to UNESCO's expansive array of cultural assets and initiatives. Promoting Global Peace and Unity. No doubt, the Jazz music genre has become a global culture and a permanent fixture of the lifestyle and entertainment industry. The history and contemporary evolution of “Jazz” worldwide is consequently evidenced by its universal adoption by people across all social strata. And because Jazz continues to break through these geographic and political boundaries, its unique role as a conduit for promoting global harmony through diplomacy and cultural exchange was recognized by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) which designated “April 30” every year as “International Jazz Day”. Beyond its symbolic and substantial fulfilment of UNESCO's mandate, the annual “Runway Jazz” event will bring together the best of local and global music and modern fashion, featuring a lavish and classy medley of accomplished performing artistes, entertainers and iconic designers proudly and elegantly showcasing their craft to an appreciative and discerning audience. I am passionate about uniting people using entertainment as a platform for promoting Nigerian talent. As a jazz aficionado, social entrepreneur and philanthropist, it became imperative for me to be part of a cause that would leave an indelible mark on the global community by bringing these talents to bear. My vision was to create an experiential event that was as enduring as it was remarkable and helping to bring hope to the seemingly bleak future of the Nigerian child. I consider “Runway Jazz” to be one of my most monumental achievements till date and I am delighted to share this feat with you. Although the photobook is by no means exhaustive, it will give you a glimpse of the activities that culminated in the 2016 event as well as the follow up events that will set the tone for 2017. It was a truly enchanting evening! From the depth of my heart, I will like to thank, His Excellency, Akinwunmi Ambode, Executive Governor of Lagos State and all those that supported me in making “Runway Jazz 2016” a success and as promised, delivering the biggest jazz experience in Lagos. I cannot contain the excitement about the riveting line-up of events we have in store for you. I look forward to sharing the experience of “Runway Jazz 2017” with you. See you there!

Xerona Duke is a Nigerian attorney, singer, songwriter, multiinstrumentalist and filmmaker. She is currently working on her debut EP slated for an early 2017 release. In 2016, Xerona began to make waves with a handful of standout musical releases, which display her impressive vocal range and poetic lyrical content. Born and raised in Surulere, Lagos, Duke was classically trained at the piano since age five and began playing the saxophone at age eleven. Throughout her childhood and adolescence Xerona's grandfather, who was a choir director and organ player, and her father, who sang and played the saxophone, both introduced her to music. While her family exposed her to musical elements, various eclectic acts such as Whitney Houston, Alanis Morissette, and Journey who truly influenced Xerona. It wasn't until Xerona reached the age of fourteen and migrated to the United Kingdom when her musical scope began to broaden and she started to build her identity. There, Duke learned to play the guitar, started singing lessons and took exams administered by The Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music. As a High-School Sophomore she won The Gold Singing Award, becoming the youngest person to ever earn this achievement. Although she clearly exhibited dynamic musical abilities, Xerona followed the family tradition and pursued a law degree at the University of Nottingham after which, she returned to Nigeria to attend The Nigerian Law School. After passing the New York State Bar and the completion of her Masters program at the University of Pennsylvania, Xerona began working for a law firm in New York City but on all her time off she found herself performing at open mics, charity events and any other platforms available to herself. Eventually she left the firm to pursue music full time while enrolling in film school at the New York Film Academy. Once she further dedicated herself to her music career, Xerona earned numerous songwriting placements on upcoming releases by established Nigerian artists. She credits her move to New York City for enhancing her penmanship, saying, “New York has made me braver with my words, a lot more honest. The music I'm writing now is a rawer expression of myself.” Now, with guidance from co-managers Briant Biggs (Roc Nation) and Tola Odunsi (Cabal), Xerona is gearing up to formally introduce herself to the international music scene. “I think people should expect a little bit of the unexpected with my music. My primary focus is just telling a story and making sure that the meld of music and lyrics take my listeners on a musical journey that they feel personally.”
