CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, SEPLAT PETROLEUM DEVELOPMENT COMPANY PLC Austin Avuru is a key player in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. He started his career with NNPC in 1980, holding several positions including wellsite geologist, production seismologist and reservoir engineer during his twelve years in the company. He left the NNPC in 1992 to become a technical manager/Deputy Chief Operating Ofﬁcer of a start-up business, Allied Energy Resources in Nigeria, a pioneer deepwater operator. This step re-awakened his entrepreneurship skills and helped to launch him into the world of independent E & P business. Buoyed by his huge appetite for value creation, in 2002 Austin assembled an array of industry professionals to form Platform Petroleum Limited and consequently, held the role of managing director. In response to the divestment programme by IOCs, Austin's team at Platform worked with Shebah Exploration and Production Company to form SEPLAT in 2009. Subsequently, SEPLAT acquired a 45% interest in three oil blocks from Shell Nigeria, Total and Agip. Under his leadership, the company has grown from a little known minnow producing 18kbd in 2010 to a major Nigerian Independent dually listed on the Lagos and London Exchanges with operated production of over 70kbd crude oil and over 300mmscfd of gas. A geologist/Petroleum Engineer by training and an alumnus of OPM 41 at the Harvard Business School, Austin is an accomplished industry writer and a resource professional for major national and international conferences. Co-Author of “Nigerian Petroleum Business, A Handbook” and author of “Politics, Economics & the Nigerian Petroleum Industry”, he won the 2013 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Master Category for Nigeria and the West African sub-region. He is married to Victoria and has ﬁve children.

THE ENIGMATIC AUSTIN AVURU TURNS 60. So it is already 10 years since Augustine Ojunekwu Avuru celebrated his 50th birthday at Victoria Island, Lagos, how time flies. I recall getting to know Mr Avuru as a very young lawyer in the early 90's, while on a routine visit to meet with his boss at that time at Allied Energy Limited at Kingsway Building, Falomo, Lagos - Mr George Abiodun Osahon. On being introduced to Mr Avuru, I was instantly drawn to him by his friendliness, openness, simplicity, humility and overwhelming intelligence he exuded in interacting with him. On other visits to Allied Energy's office, I found myself spending more time with him in his office than with Mr Osahon who was always too busy working on his big desktop computer of that era on his table. At one of my numerous visits, he announced to me that “it is time for him to move on with his career”, I pleaded with him not to forget a young lawyer like me, he simply asked me to “keep in touch”. Mr Avuru is a man who is very good at sustaining any relationship. When he subsequently set up Platform Petroleum Limited in 2002, along with other oil industry professionals, I was appointed as the Company Secretary, a position I have occupied till date. From my position, I have watched the Company grow, under the initial leadership and pace setting structure laid down by Mr Avuru as one of the best and reputable marginal field oil and Companies in Nigeria. Mr Avuru is a very energetic and hardworking man who by dint of hard work accomplishes whatever goals or targets he sets his eyes on. I was not surprise when Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc was established and as the inaugural MD/CEO, he has led the Company to be the fastest growing oil Company in Nigeria and the biggest indigenous oil Company in Nigeria. Mr Avuru is an erudite scholar, a very intelligent man and a very fiery discussant, who like his former boss - Mr Osahon has informed opinion on any issue under the sun, even on legal matters which ought to be my area, I had to remind him occasionally when we discuss legal issues that he should take it easy, as I am actually the lawyer, not him. Mr Avuru is a globally well-respected oil and gas industry guru, a kind man who carries all his childhood friends along till date, a consummate family man, a detribalized Nigerian, a man of exemplary character and immense integrity. Congratulations I am happy to witness the 60th birth day ceremony of Austin Avuru, having seen him progress from a young geologist in NAPIMS/NNPC over 30 years ago to a CEO/MD of Seplat. As his exploration manager in Napims, I had noted his resourceful and very professional approach to work, even as a non-operating partner in the JV. While on working attachment to a JV partner , he easily came out as a team leader among his peers. Austin is an outstanding Professional and Entrepreneur. As the Managing Director of Platform Petroleum Ltd, which won one of the 24 marginal fields that were awarded in 2003, his company was one of the first to produce first oil. He then formed Seplat Petroleum Plc with two other Partners where he has been the Managing Director. Under him, Seplat has grown from a Limited Liability company, producing about 15000 BOPD to a PLC producing over 60,000BOPD. Surely, he is an outstanding professional manager. A Tribute to My Hero – Austin Avuru I thought of many things to write and l came to the simple conclusion that words are not enough to describe a good, honest, successful, fair, purposeful, assertive, highly articulate and merciful leader. I don't know where to start from and I wonder how best to describe my Hero and our Hero Austin Avuru. For the past ﬁve years l have worked for him, l have studied him like a book to come to the conclusion that, he is not just a rare breed of a true entrepreneur but he is also a compassionate father. Happy Birthday to you my CEO I have been privileged to know and work closely with Austin Avuru for about eight years now, from December 2010 to date. I met him shortly after I joined Seplat Petroleum Development Company that month. Before then, I was a reluctant recruit, unsure of the rightness or otherwise of my decision to return to paid employment with Seplat soon after my 'ﬁrm' decision for an early retirement which I achieved after two years of vigorous negotiations with my former employer. After few minutes of interaction with Austin Avuru, I was suddenly very sure I made the right decision to pick up this job. Looking back today, I can only thank God for that decision and the opportunity. These eight years, I have experienced Austin Avuru, whom I deeply respect and fondly call my CEO, I can only describe him as a God-fearing and humble man who strives to be fair to all. My perception of him is that of one who carries with him a certain burden of history probably borne from childhood/adolescent experiences, with a focus to deliver value and goodness to mankind. Austin Avuru is highly Intelligent, a man of many parts and an entrepreneur par excellence. A geologist by training, it is very easy to mistake him for an economist, a lawyer, a preacher, a historian, an orator, or even a politician depending on the need of the moment. Cheers to a living legend and nation builder, you are my professional inspiration! First, I will like to say a big congratulations on turning sixty years and thank you for living an exemplary life – Indeed God has done great and mighty things through you. I met Austin sometimes around 2005 at a NAPE event, in Lagos. He was very eloquent, bold and spoke inspiring words with beaming love for everyone. I admired him so much but did not have any personal relationship with him save for being a member of NAPE, and he was the President. By 2007, I was working as a Seismic interpreter with Degeconek Nigeria Limited, and was assigned to conduct structural mapping of the Umutu-Asuokpu marginal field farmed-out to Platform during the 2003 marginal field bid round. On a fateful evening, the MD of Degeconek notified me that 'someone' from Platform will be visiting for work progress review of the project. I further probed to know who exactly was coming from Platform, and was told is Austin Avuru. I then asked who will be engaging him for the review and my MD said 'you of course, are you not the one handling the project' – my heart skipped, as I didn't know what a young geoscientist like me will be discussing with such an intelligent and experienced 'oil-man' I have watched and admired from a distance. I quickly rushed back to my workstation, check through my evaluation notes in readiness for the review. A few hours later, Austin 'bounced-in' and he asked 'where are we reviewing the interpretation, and my colleagues directed him to my workstation, I greeted him and offered him the chair beside me. His next words were 'take a line across the structure and Umutu-04 well and display all interpreted horizons', the review was very engaging with loads of insights from Austin on the field and structural Geology. And that was the beginning of our relationship… Over the last one decade, I have joyously worked so hard for you, learnt so much from you and benefitted immensely from our relationship. You taught me excellence, boldness and provided direction in very difficult situations. Your contributions to people development is massive and your largeness of heart is uncommon. Working for you and learning from you has been a great honour and advantage, I appreciate your guidance and support. As you celebrate sixty years of excellence, value creation and service to humankind, we look forward to another forty years to make a century of record-breaking achievements. I pray that the Lord will continue to grant you wisdom and good health to enjoy the fruits of your labour and watch your biological and professional children grow to make you proud.
