The first semester is characterized by studio-based investigations that are developed through thinking, experiencing and making. This semester consists of 3 modules aiming to discover important concepts, approaches, different ways of thinking and representation as underlined in the first part. First module, “Confrontation” intends to investigate basic concepts of design process through understanding what we have, what we see and how we perceive them. Sensing physically does not provide a complete perception, and in the first module we will learn, discuss and represent them in different tools. Second module will be based on “Experience and Translation” includes different activities, both in the field and the studio, Different experiences will be translated in different ways and materials. Third module is “Interpretation and Fiction” in which students are expected to create two survival units (portable and permanent) in an apocalyptic world. Each student will define his/her apocalyptic scenario and the environment, needs, threats or etc. accordingly.

Module 1: LIGHT CASE Students were asked to design a LIGHT CASE in module 1. They selected one the given concepts: a light case for outdoor path, interior (expansive) or reading. The final case will consist of one single material selected by students. They are expected to experiment on the different types of structural logics. The case may have linearly, planarly or volumetrically composed structures. Module 2: BODILY TOPOGRAPHIES The aim of this exercise is to experiment the preconceived meanings of topography and explore the ways in which a dance topography can be shaped in reference to bodily movements. The notions of motion/speed/form/movement patterns/sequences and the relationship between the body and space in the given video are analyzed. The sequential continuity of the movement was turned in to a topography at the end. Module 3: PROMENADE DESIGN Ağırnas, Kayseri For this module, the given site, which contains abandoned buildings in Ağırnas is assumed to be an ethnography museum. The abandoned buildings are nearby a deep valley. Visitors are intended to climb up and down the steep slope of the valley with a path designed specifically for this purpose. So, students are required to design a circulation path containing two station points. It is expected to be in physical compliance with the topography of the site, so it can extend or shrink in all dimensions and include open and semi-open spaces. Module 4: CONNECTING URBAN PUBLICITIES Hunat Hatun Complex, Kayseri This module consists of three different successive exercises, which will require you to revisit and apply all the practices accomplished throughout the semester. The module will dwell on Hunat Hatun Complex and its surroundings in the historic city center of Kayseri. This is an experiment on the complete process of contemporary practice of architectural design. The activities will range form the survey of the site in different dimensions to spatial configurations originated through the projections on the site.

“Museum +” Kayseri

Architectural Design Studio 3 focuses on re-production of a spatial experience close to the urban periphery. The studio performs a spatial research by working on the interaction of two distinct places by suggesting a new museum concept alongside the mall. The studio makes a research about the contradictions on socio-spatial problems in-between the urban core and periphery. Furthermore, the tension between two discrete architectural phenomenon (the mall and the museum) must be reconsidered with a new perspective. In this respect, the studio aims to propose a design solution for the surrounding area behind the mall: Mix, Kayseri in order to re-design the peripheral relationship of urban development in south Kayseri. The key-word of the studio is interaction. Different components of the given environment are expected to be interacted/interrelated through spaces created during architectural design process.

“CoWorking Factory II Ecomorphosis in the Working Environment” Kayseri

Architectural Design Studio 4 focuses on a local problem that can be used as a tool to transform the city from a global perspective. It deals with an existing site and seeks to reconsider the physical and social character, and the intangible values of the place in their current context by gathering data on-site. It aims to understand the relationships between the urban fabric and the architectural artifact through different scales. The studio not only emphasizes solving the architectural program as a spatial problem but also is concerned with discussing the technological and environmental design aspects with a holistic perspective. Therefore, The Architectural Design Studio 4 is designed based on the theme “CoWorking Factory || Ecomorphosis in the Working Environment” in the old bus terminal site of Kayseri, which is in the core of the old industrial area. The students reinterpret the coworking issue and design a hub by integrating the future underground metro station, existing tram and bus lines, and the proposed coworking spaces to increase the interaction between the public and revitalize the old industrial area. The students are also expected to define a sub-theme based on environmental problems as a research and design challenge.

Design Methods & Praxis course focuses on the architectural design methods and praxis in different scales of the architectural profession. It aims to create an awareness of design thinking to provide the ability to design using a variety of design approaches in different scales. It also intends to enable searching and representing individual design praxis through experiences. The significant contribution of the course is to equip the students with emphasizing the various ways of designing through a variety of logical, cognitive, and visual procedures. The design methods and praxis from different fields of design, and the role of designers are discussed in detail through documentaries, lectures, discussions, and in-class activities, first in general, then by focusing on the architectural profession. Students experience the use of different design methods by proposing a design solution for the given design problem as part of the in-class activities. They prepare scaled drawings, 3D models, physical models, and brief reports explaining their design idea together with representing the use of the given design method. Besides, the students examine and represent their design praxis and experience by using diagrams, images, and brief texts through the new perspective they gain throughout the semester.

This course indicates that emergence of cities in history. Spatial science researchers should know and learn the historical development of cities because of the open dynamic system. It enables to make the comparisons between today’s city and past’s city by students as researchers. Thus, they can be efficiently make planning and design by using older city plans, architectural elements and urban forms. They can learn on evaluating about the city’s characteristics and analysis overall. Additionally, the conservation culture and public awareness of conservation might be increased by utilizing course materials. Cultural heritage must be inherited from the older generations to new generations by sustainability concept.
