Well isn’t it just crazy, it’s November and 2011 is in the final stretch. Well almost, but not quite. The ‘big race’ is over, sore feet and empty pockets are in the restoration process as we gear up for the mad dash towards Christmas. In compiling this issue my thoughts are drawn back to an interview I did with Dr Deepak Chopra last year in 3008Docklands. On his then tour he made the point that life is not necessarily about making material or monetary gains but about building up our personal stock pile of life experiences and memories. It is the memories of times we spent with loved ones and friends that will be among our most treasured assets as we reflect back later in life. It is with this in mind that we present our end of year venue guide as our major feature for this November issue. Now is the time to seal the backdrop for your end of year celebration and get together events. Our annual end of year guide provides what we believe to be the most varied and extensive guide for fabulous venue options that you’ll find in the Docklands precinct. Whether you are looking for in-home catering or venues that cater to sit down, formal, relaxed, interactive or scenic locations, our guide has something for every size of function and for every taste. There are some great places to consider for your work party, catch up with friends and get together with family.

Obviously accommodating our biggest end of year venue guide to date has come with some rearrangements to our usual format, but we have held steadfast as to what you have told us are your favourite features of the magazine. By now you may have heard, November is the month of Dolly Parton, as the undisputed queen of country heads back to Melbourne this November after a 30 year hiatus for 3 fabulous shows at Rod Laver Arena. While 2 of her shows are already sold out, we are ecstatic to be able to offer our readers some insight into Dolly’s Better Day tour and the chance to win A Reserve tickets to her final show in Melbourne valued at $299 each! Enjoy your November issue and be sure to let us know what you want to see more of... or less, we are dedicated to promoting this fine precinct from within and taking the Docklands word out and it’s always a pleasure to produce a publication the local community can be proud of - thank you for your positive feedback! Book in now for life’s best outcomes - memories!

Grey Gardens The Musical

Just Leadership Just Imagine Breakfast

KUBIK Melbourne Music Week 2011

2011 Remembrance Day Service

Grey Gardens is the compelling and moving real-life story of Edith Bouvier Beale and her adult daughter, ‘Little’ Edie, the eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. In the early 1940’s, ‘Little’ Edie was one of the brightest names in the social register. After WWII, life at their 28-room mansion, Grey Gardens, took an unexpected turn. While Jackie and her sister, Lee Radziwill played out their lives on the world stage, Edie and Edith became East Hampton’s most notorious recluses.

In the final event of this series for 2011, the topic, Imagining social leadership - the journey: Heroic spirit, ingenuity and the power of collaboration poses the questions - What can we learn from the African Australian community about the nature and practice of social leadership? Can the power of collaboration enlarge our capacity to make a difference? Social leaders from the African Australian community, Dr Berhan Ahmed, Rachel Riak and Ahmed Yusuf offer fresh perspectives on social leadership and collaboration.

Kubik makes its Australasian debut as the premier live music venue for Melbourne Music Week 2011. This one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art, temporary outdoor live music venue will function as a cafe by day and as a unique licensed venue at night. Designed in Berlin, KUBIK is constructed from a series of interconnected and illuminated water tanks. An impressive line-up of live electronic music artists and DJs; KUBIK Melbourne also features video mapping, light installations, digital arts and sound design by Forward Sound.

Victorians are invited to commemorate this Remembrance Day at the Shrine. One minute of silence will be observed at 11am. All are invited to visit the Sanctuary, through the north door, past the Shrine guards, to witness the sun pass across the Stone of Remembrance at 12 noon. Royal Australian Navy band will perform and there will be an RAAF flyover. The Salvation Army will supply morning tea after the service. Guided tours are available throughout the day. FAMILY FUN AT THE FETE On Sunday 23rd of October, the Harbour Family and Children’s Centre held a fabulous fete as a fundraiser for the centre’s library and outdoor play area. The children and their families enjoyed cup cake decorating, face painting, art and craft activities as well as a very popular mini farm animal enclosure, where the children enjoyed patting and holding lambs, chooks, rabbits and a couple of guinea pigs who seemed to be lapping up the gentle attention of the children. A varied assortment of stalls including second hand books, plants, games and toys as well as children’s clothes and shoes were spread across the beautiful outdoor play area, while a sizzling BBQ and cafe kept hungry tummies at bay, from all the excitement.

Residents Rally

against Proposed Piazza Development

The first ever public protest by Docklands residents was held on October 6th at the site of MAB Corporation’s proposed NewQuay Central development at Waterfront City Piazza.

assurance that it will install a public park behind the hotel. The concerned residents argue that in reality, it will be a shadowed strip of grass with obstructed views of the harbour.

In excess of 100 people attended the community protest to show their solidarity against the 15 storey hotel development as well as 129 metre tall residential towers to be erected. Residents at the meeting listened to three speakers which included, Docklands Community Association President, Roger Gardner, Michelle Anderson and Dr Marieluise Jonas, a lecturer in landscape architecture, who is also a Docklands resident.

In addition, there are serious concerns regarding adequate traffic access and what will add to already, deficient car parking as well as the proximity of buildings to one another and the resulting overshadowing.

The Community are concerned at what they view as poor regulation of urban design and building controls by VicUrban, the government authority for the area. They are strongly opposed to the destruction of the Piazza, which they state is the only purpose built, public square in Docklands for entertainment and recreational use, dismissing MAB Corp’s

The speakers urged concerned residents to write to the Minister of Planning to express concerns and objections to the development. The Federal Member for Melbourne, Adam Bandt has put forward his support while Planning Minister, Matthew Guy has not, as yet, signed off on the proposal. Dragon Boats Victoria (DBV) has the secured the most extensive round of events for this 2011-2012 season that they have ever conducted. The success of operations at Victoria Harbour has resulted in DBV again securing the Australian Corporate Games Dragon Boat Regatta which will be held on Saturday 26 November. Last year over 30 teams took part and the 2011 event will be equally as exciting. The Docklands Dragon Boat Cup is scheduled for December 4 at World Trade Centre Wharf to celebrate Chinese New Year before the Melbourne International Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday 11 March. Planning is underway for Chinese musicians, Lion Dance and Chinese food vendors to make it an authentic Oriental celebration. The big news is however, that Docklands will play host to the largest dragon boat event in Australia’s history when DBV together the Australian Dragon Boat Federation stage the Australian Championships over 5 days. Public input sought on electoral review The Victorian Electoral Commission encourages voters in the City of Melbourne to have a say in the electoral representation review of their Council. This is the first review since the introduction of the City of Melbourne Act 2001. The aim of the review is to ensure fair and equitable representation for voters and will examine how voters in the City of Melbourne are represented. Currently there are nine councillors and the city is not divided into wards. The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) wants to know what sort of structure you would like and why you favour that model. Victorian Electoral Commissioner Steve Tully said the review will consider a range of information, including arguments and

“COUPLE IN HARMONY WITH LIFE ON YARRA’S EDGE” By Laura Meaney Taking the plunge to move interstate can be daunting but for Rosslyn and Daniel Cooper, the transition from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland to Yarra’s Edge, Docklands has been blissful and has opened up a wealth of opportunities for the musical duo. Music encompasses a huge part of the couple’s lives and is the reason behind their decision to relocate to Melbourne. Rosslyn is a semi-professional singer and has sung at weddings and funerals in the past while Daniel is a full-time professional lead guitarist and a classical/latin pianist trying to get his break into the competitive music industry. “We wanted to move to Melbourne because we know there are more opportunities for Daniel, as it is a thriving industry here compared to Queensland. Daniel has started working with record label, Yamaha and is looking for more opportunities to further his career. His band from Queensland will be coming to Melbourne at the end of the year and

it is a rock, reggae band called Kindread. The music industry is hard to get into, but he is an extremely talented and passionate individual,” Rosslyn said. Rosslyn works at an engineering company and since moving to Melbourne has joined Melbourne’s Singers of Gospel Choir as a Soprano. Rosslyn is ecstatic to have been offered two solo parts in the annual gala concert and she encourages her new Docklands neighbours to come along to what will be a fabulous night. “It has been three months since I started with MSG. It has been lots of fun as we sing top 10 songs like Adele through to Michael Jackson and Classic Gospel. It is a group of 60 people who get together in a four part harmony choir. Since joining, I’ve been offered solo parts for the gala concert which is pretty exciting. I’ll be singing the title song “Shake Yourself Loose” by Vickie Winans as well as “Shackles” by Mary Mary,” adds Rosslyn. Promising to be a relaxing way to support these newly based Docklanders, the gala concert features choreographed numbers, a rocking band with The Hornet’s Jeff Burstin on guitar and New Orleans jazz duo Big Boy Lemonade and Solid Gold and a set list including Adele, Michael Jackson, Mary Mary and a luminous arrangement of the Zulu freedom song, Tshotsholoza.

Rosslyn & Daniel - Enjoying life at their new home

When the couple are not pursuing their music careers, they are appreciating everything Docklands has to offer, as Rosslyn explained how she has fallen in love with Docklands.

“We wanted to live somewhere which was in walking distance to café’s and is central without feeling too busy. We have always loved Melbourne because it has a good vibe and so we chose Docklands because we wanted a place near water and parklands. I love Docklands and knew from the second of coming here with the boats and cafes downstairs that it is an absolutely gorgeous area. Everyone is extremely friendly and easy to chat to. It has a real sense of community,” she said.

WTC Wharf Expands Water Taxi Service Connecting Docklands to the City Melbourne is about to get its own free water taxi service, connecting Docklands to the city along the Yarra River. In a move that looks to alter the way Melburnians travel around their city, WTC Wharf are expanding their existing water taxi service to incorporate larger sections of the Yarra. A shuttle between Docklands’ ANZ Building and the WTC Wharf promenade has been in operation since April, bringing diners to the new waterfront precinct on the river’s north bank. The shuttle service will expand even further, with plans to include more stops near Federation Square, Melbourne Park and Southbank in the future. A range of historical vessels will make up the fleet of water taxis, with the already operational Rebecca and Elizabeth Anne to be joined by other boats that can carry a ranging number of passengers. The WTC Wharf to Docklands return service currently runs every Thursday and Friday between 12:30pm and 3:00pm and Fridays after work between 5pm and 6.30pm, departing every 15 minutes. The water taxi service will remain free after the expansion,

with crew members taking donations for charities Mission to Seafarers and Police Legacy. Beyond mere transportation, WTC Wharf hope to open up the river to a range of both local and international tourists, and offer an exciting alternative for journeying to events such as major sporting matches at the MCG, and the Spring Racing Carnival. Complementing this new gateway to WTC Wharf will be a $2.8 million development which will make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to access what was the World Trade Centre.

PROPERTY/BUSINESS/FINANCE

EXO - Designed to amaze, inspire and delight Attempt to break into the property market and you’d be forgiven for wondering where to begin. With the plethora of contradictory headlines spouting a mix of boom, doom and overpriced gloom, there’s little coverage of solid urban opportunities; yet they do exist.

from the hustle and bustle of urban life, with each apartment purposely designed to maximise space and minimise noise, allowing residents to reside in the heart of the city without having to compromise on their quality of living.

Take Exo for example - the new 96 apartment offering from global property group Lend Lease. Boasting a prized inner city location on the corner of Melbourne’s lauded Collins St, Exo shatters the “worst house/best street” myth, delivering well-considered design and quality finishing’s to one of Melbourne’s most sort-after addresses – and at a price that makes it viable for first homebuyers and investors alike.

Due for completion in mid-2013, these one and two-bedroom apartments begin at an affordable $395,000; ideal for the first homebuyer or the young professional who’s committed to their career but loathes the daily commute.

Exo is the latest in a line of commercial and residential projects adding panache to Melbourne’s Victoria Harbour Precinct - a unique fusing of city and sea. It’s this blend of urban and untamed that inspires Exo’s unique sculptural form, creating a development rich in style and light. The design demonstrates an innate understanding of the need for sanctuary

Simply put, the beauty of inner-city living extends beyond your proximity to the abundance of bars, restaurants, galleries, sports stadiums and shopping Melbourne has on offer. It’s your ability to actually enjoy these things that counts. Remove the daily stress of delayed trains and traffic jams and you’ve effectively bought yourself something priceless; more time. While it’s hard to put a numerical value on that, it can be done with property as evidenced by the median unit price in Victoria Harbour (as part of the wider-Docklands precinct). Trending upwards year-on-year, the average unit price

has risen from $537,000 in 2007 to $600,000 today. And it’s good news for investors too with the median weekly rent for a 1-bedroom apartment increasing at an annual average of 6.8% while 2-bedroom apartments boast an annual average increase of 8.1%; well above the State average. As the Docklands and surrounding areas become more established, interest in residential developments only continues to grow, feeding an upward trajectory in property prices. Exo will contribute to the growth of the area with the inclusion of 7 retail shops at the base of the building and a carpark designed to service the needs of both residents and visitors alike. It’s this kind of foresight and planning that should establish Victoria Harbour as a true

alternative to the ever-popular Southbank when it comes to waterside inner city living and entertainment. For the uninitiated, Victoria Harbour and the wider Docklands area has transformed over the past fifteen years from the humble home of Victoria’s first port to the dynamic residential and recreational hub of today. With modern marinas, a yacht club, easy access to Melbourne’s public transport system and an abundance of dining options, Lend Lease’s Exo brings an opportunity to own a modern piece of Melbourne’s heritage without the hefty price tag. There are opportunities out there; you just need to know where to look. Visit exoapartments.com.au or call 8610 4800 for further information

How To Spend The Carbon Tax Billions By Tom Elliott Although the Carbon Tax has now been passed by both houses of the Australian Parliament, the use to which the many billions the government will collect in five to ten years’ time remains fairly vague. I worry that we’ll expend far too much effort trying to lower global CO2 levels in the atmosphere, despite the fact there’s little impact a small country like Australia can have in this regard. As a result, it’s worth considering some alternative ideas for spending the Carbon Tax revenue. One idea, inextricably linked with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, is to do nothing and in fact dismantle the tax. Although Mr Abbott has pledged “in blood” to do this, I have a funny feeling that any such future efforts will be halfhearted and unsuccessful. Remember that for several years after the introduction of the GST in 2001, the Labor Party maintained a policy to abolish it, despite the fact that all Labor state premiers thought the tax was fantastic!

Another idea is to continue the initial policy of household subsidies long term, while at the same time pumping cash into various alternative energy businesses and research. Such an approach is electorally popular, as it both (a) compensates poorer households for inevitable rises in power and gas prices and (b) gives the impression that a long term technological solution to the problem of global warming is well underway. The problem with using large dollops of public funding to ‘pick winners’ amongst all the alternative energy options out there is the not inconsiderable risk that the government backs the wrong horse(s). Some readers may remember the Victorian government’s ill fated attempts in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s to improve the state’s economy by providing taxpayer funded venture capital to a variety of start up and conceptual companies - pretty much all of which went broke. Politicians and public servants are rarely the correct people to make such judgements, which is why current day publicly funded investment bodies like the Future Fund are managed on arm’s length and professional basis.

So what would I do with the federal government’s future carbon tax billions? One of the problems with trying to reduce atmospheric pollution in any meaningful manner is the risk that our large trading partners - think countries like China, India and the USA - do not bother to do the same. In this instance, we could suffer major economic pain cutting our CO2 emissions at a time when the rest of the world goes on its merry way and does little to deal with the problem. Recently I watched a documentary which predicted that the once ubiquitous Koala might face extinction this century due to excessive land clearing. This made me wonder whether instead of remaining focused on global aspects to climate change, we should spend our carbon tax revenues on buying up land and creating many more national parks. Such areas could be left to return to native bush, thus giving Australia’s unique flora and fauna room to live, roam and breed - as they did freely prior to European settlement over two hundred years ago. Such a land-based national park strategy could be extended to the marine environment so that ecosystems in our

rivers, estuaries and oceans might also have a chance to recover and thrive. In essence, given we can’t control how the rest of the world acts, let’s take care of our own backyard. As a nation, we’re almost certain to enjoy the results. Tom Elliott is Director of both MM&E Capital Pty Ltd, a Melbourne based hedge fund, and Beulah Capital Pty Ltd, a private wealth manager. With the Christmas decorations hitting the shops, 2011 has been a blur and I can hardly believe we are heading into the final few months of this year. My tips for setting your financial resolutions: 1. What brings you to work every day? What are your plans and what is your vision for life? - Being in business can be one of the most rewarding things in life but keeping the flame alight can be a little harder at times. My advice is to write down why you are in business, what is your passion and vision for life? This may be similar to your business mission (this can be entwined at times especially if you are the business). Money at the end of the day is just a means to an end, being in business can provide the money but what is it that makes you light up and get started with your day each day?! This motivator can keep you focused in the down or slow times of business! 2. Your Cash Matters - Cash flow in small business can be the biggest challenge, getting on top of the accounts receivable and having a good structure in place to allocate for BAS and other payments can be key to your success. My advice is to keep it simple and have a cash flow plan and budget and keep track of your monthly targets. Remember to celebrate your successes and check in with your ‘vision’ above when the times are a bit slow. Get a good relationship with your business banker so that you can smooth out the good months with the slower ones and

IN BUSINESS

LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE

have a separate account for the BAS and other regular commitments. 3. Review your Back Up Plan - Having a back up plan is one of the most important elements to being in business. What would happen if the worst happens? What is your succession plan? Do you have enough asset in the business to fund someone else to step in if you are not able to work any more or do you need insurance? Are you in partnership and do you have a buy sell agreement in place? This area can be very complex and requires your professional advisers working together to structure the right outcomes for you. You need to have a good lawyer, financial adviser and accountant to guide you through the tips and traps to ensure you can get on with the good things in life and business! If you need assistance in exploring these things further, speak with a professional, but most importantly start your journey today to being free around your money and creating wealth with understanding. NETWORKING EVENT If you’re up for a FREE night of learning, networking, canapés & drinks then you’ll love this Business Shorts event. Bring your cards and meet other business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals in a relaxed environment. Come along and expand your network! The Most Useful Selling Tool I Have Ever Used Date: Monday 21st November 2011 Address: Servcorp 101 Collins St, Melbourne Time: 5:30pm - 7pm Speaker: Chris Golis, Practical Emotional Intelligence Topic: In the perfect world all decisions would be made logically and all people would act rationally.

In the real world emotions play a key role in what we decide to do. If you can understand why do people do what they do and then learn how to influence them to behave differently, you will truly have authentic managerial power and leadership. While our non-logical emotional behaviour is a result of a dynamic mix of up to thirty temperament factors, you can explain 90% of this behaviour using seven components and the seven associated basic desires. In this talk you will be introduced to this technique and learn how Chris Golis has effectively used it. RSVP: www.servcorpaus.eventbrite.com NOVEMBER 2011

DOLLY PARTON - BETTER DAY TOUR

After a long but willing wait, the undisputed Queen of Country, and one of the most iconic performers of our time, Dolly Parton, returns to Australia in an all new stage production this month, the Better Day World Tour. In her first solo tour back to our shores in almost 30 years, Dolly’s 3 shows at Rod Laver Arena are selling out at lightning speed, as fans eagerly await this unique show offering a completely new production, lighting and video. Dollyites and new generation recruits

on Dolly’s gold piano and each of Dolly’s performance outfits fitted out with 120,000 bugle beads and over 6,000 rhinestones. Oh, and 43 guitars are used on stage each night. It’s not just Dolly fans that can’t wait for her arrival, Dolly herself is excited to be coming back to Australia as she fondly recollects her last visit and insists that it is distance and the logistics of bringing a tour of this magnitude here that has kept her away for so long.

Dolly Parton

brings Melbourne a ‘Better Day’ to the Dolly fan base can expect to see the most honoured female country performer of all time reel out her hits including 9 To 5, Here You Come Again, Jolene, and of course the incomparable I Will Always Love You. With all new sets, costumes and new music from her latest album, Better Day (out now), is sure to make an evening spent with Dolly a night to remember. 3008Docklands is excited to bring our readers some insight into what audiences can expect from Dolly’s Melbourne shows and why Dolly Parton is still, decades on, one of the most highly regarded and adored performers of our time. Dolly Parton is big in every way, in only the most flattering of senses. Dolly’s trademark big hair, big heart, big costumes, big sets and big assets, referring to Dolly’s tour bus of course, guarantee Dolly’s twelve Australian concerts will be huge. With a stage set of 159,360 LED bulbs, 1.6 million sequins just

“Australia is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to; the people are just like the folks where I grew up, my kind of people, just like family. Everyone was just so friendly and so great and I just didn’t want to leave, I was even looking at buying property. The last time I was there I was on tour with Kenny Rogers and we stayed 5 or 6 weeks, I was crying when it was time to leave, even the band was crying” recalls Dolly. Dolly Parton has been writing songs since she was 7 years old and has written over 3000 songs, she adds with a laugh “I write something almost every day, not all of them are good, I always have a laugh and say I’ve written over 3000 songs and probably three good ones!” Considering Dolly’s song writing track record it’s pretty clear, she has written some of the most memorable songs of the past 40 years that are still loved today. Dolly released her hit song “I will always love you” on her 1974 album entitled Jolene. In 1992, Whitney Houston released her version of Dolly’s song as the soundtrack to the film, the Bodyguard,

the single became one of less than 30 all time singles to have sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, while the catchy ‘9 To 5’ made it to number 1 on the pop, rock and country charts. Australia is the final stop on the Better Day World Tour having spent the northern hemisphere summer touring across America, Europe and the UK. Dolly’s new album and tour is about boosting people’s spirits at a time when Dolly feels the world could do with some inspiration and positivity. “This whole album and tour is about uplifting people, I called it Better Day because everything and everyone is so down these days with the weather patterns, the economy and all the bad things that have been happening across the world. The first single off the album is “Together you and I” which has a Keith Urban feel to it with the banjos and up-tempo country flavour, it’s a love song but it’s also about all of us as people, that together you and I can make a better day.” Apart from the sequins and rhinestones, what is particularly striking about Dolly Parton is her dedication to making a better day for others. Growing up in Tennessee, the fourth of twelve children, Dolly has described her childhood as ‘dirt poor’. Many of Dolly’s relatives, including her father, never learnt to read or write, they had to go to work to support their families. Dolly is therefore, particularly partial to charities relating to literacy. Dolly adds “If you can read, you can educate yourself by going to the library or to a book store, but if you can’t it can be crippling.” Dolly established the Dollywood Foundation which runs theme park Dollywood and Dolly’s Imagination Library encouraging a love of books and learning in children. Those enrolled receive a book every month from the time the child is born until they begin Kindergarten. The program runs throughout the U.S, Canada, England and most recently Scotland. Dolly anticipates that by the end of this year 40 million books will have been

delivered to children since 1996 to instil a love of reading and learning. “Before my Dad passed, he got to see this all happening and hear the children call me the book lady, my Daddy was prouder of me for that than the fact I was a star. He was just so proud!” Dolly is indeed a star, and perhaps it is her home grown values and big heart that have rewarded her as one of the most revered song writers and performers in the world today. Don’t wait another 30 years; this is your chance to see the undisputed queen of country in all her spectacular splendour this November. WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT AT DOCKLANDS MEDIBANK ICEHOUSE By Laura Meaney Enthusiastic ice skaters formed a conga line last month at Docklands Medibank Icehouse in an attempt to smash the world record for the longest conga line on ice and to raise funds for Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation. The world record was left unbeaten as conga liners toppled over before the fifteen minute mark and the

Join the international stars of DanceSport in the not to be missed annual event, the 66th Australian DanceSport Championship, as they compete to take out the 2011 Australian titles at Hisense Arena this December. Along with The Australian DanceSport Championship, Melbourne will also play host to the WDSF Asian Pacific DanceSport Championship as representatives from countries within the Asian pacific Region compete in both Standard and Latin.

event was 100 people short of the 260 minimum required. Australia’s first Winter Olympic Gold Medallist Steven Bradbury led the conga line and explained the world record attempt was overall an enjoyable experience. “It was a fun time had by all. It was a pretty exciting concept because most people would have never participated in something like this. To try and be part of The Guinness World Records is cool,” he said. Steven is renowned for being a driven individual who had to overcome all types of hurdles during his Olympic career in Short Track Speed Skating. When asked whether he was disappointed in not reaching the world record for the longest conga line on ice, Steven’s determined attitude was evident, “We will just have to try again,

maybe in March next year. It was unfortunate we didn’t make the world record as we didn’t have the numbers needed to make it. I think it was a difficult weekend because of the AFL grand final and other sporting events,” he said. All of the conga line participants placed a gold coin donation which went towards Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, a charity in memory of seven-year-old Zaidee Rose Alexander Turner. Zaidee suddenly died in December 2004, after suffering a burst blood vessel in her brain called a Cerebral Aneurism. The Turner family had been registered Organ and Tissue Donors for five years and as a result Zaidee was the only child in Victoria under the age of 16 years and one of the youngest Australians to donate her organs and tissues in 2004. Her loving family set up Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, which is a foundation that raises national awareness about organ and tissue donation. www.zaidee.org NOVEMBER 2011

WELLBEING

Colour Your DaY By Nicole Hutcheson - Kinesiology Practitioner & Instructor You only need to look out the window, pick up a magazine or switch on the television at the moment to see that the fashion trend for Spring is all about colour! Bold, bright and lots of it! This is an exciting trend, because not only do they look great, colours can actually affect the way we feel and also how our body functions. We incorporate colours into our emotions every day. We can feel blue, see red, or be green with envy. We can experience dark periods, or brighten someone’s day. In fact, all colours have a psychological and emotional component to them, and can affect both our minds and our bodies. Red is the colour if you want to stand out from the crowd as it is where the eye is drawn to first. It is a powerful colour that is stimulating, lively and friendly. It is the colour of energy

and the symbol of life. Emotionally it emulates courage strength and warmth and physically it can raise the pulse rate and get the heart pumping harder. Be aware though, it can also be perceived as aggressive. It’s a great colour if you are looking to generate excitement and is said to attract abundance. Pink can have the opposite effect of red. It is a colour that soothes rather than stimulates - in fact it is the most calming of all the colours. It represents feminine nurturing, protection and tranquillity. It is also the colour of love. Too much can have a draining effect on energy, but it is also a great colour for releasing stress as physically it can help muscles relax. If you are going for the intellectual look, opt for blue as it encourages clear communication, logic and aids concentration, and it inspires mental control and creativity. It is a very calming and soothing

colour and also helps us fall asleep. It is said to help lower blood pressure. Blue is the favourite colour of most of the world, but too much dark blue can be depressing and come across as unfriendly, so look for lighter shades.

So when deciding what to wear this season, shake off the usual Melbourne trend of blacks and greys, consider the message you are wanting to convey with your clothes and accessories, and have fun harnessing the positive effects of colour.

Green is the colour of balance and harmony and relaxation. Physically it can relax muscles, aid in deep breathing and it is also good for your heart. It is a very comfortable colour that soothes our emotions and helps us connect with nature.

Chose Orange if you are looking to have fun. It is the most flamboyant of all colours and is associated with energetic and happy times. It is a great antidepressant and helps overcome feelings of self-pity. Too much orange however, can give the impression of frivolity. Yellow is also a happy, cheerful and uplifting colour and is associated with laughter and fun. It can also stimulate the brain and can help with clear thinking, memory and decision making. Yellow can make you feel more energetic and optimistic. It builds self-confidence and lifts your spirits.

For the love of Sport is a brisk walk with my ipod and my dog walking beside me.

There is a bit of a sport buzz happening at the moment. I feel it. I feel that no sooner does one great sporting event finish, another one starts. We are a sporting nation, are we not? We are known to love our sport. What true Australian is not connected to at least one sporting love? I have to admit, I am not a sporting junky. Sport and I had an attempt at a loving relationship but we came to the conclusion we were just not meant to be. The best you will see me at

I have other loves. I have other passions. Hey, I didn’t even know about the Rugby finals until someone told me the day before. Maybe I am a little less of an Australian. Especially, considering I don’t barrack for an AFL team.

But this is the thing about us all... we all have something different to be inspired by, passionate about. We all have our own unique loves and connections. I have different strengths.

Give me a semi-final or grand final ticket to the Australian Open… I am there! Even maybe with a big foamy finger (or is that for a different sport?) But there is nothing more inspiring and more rewarding to see our nation stop for a horse race... the streets are quiet, the shops are empty. We value our sport; we value our families getting together over a sporting game. Those are memories the kids will remember! Whatever ‘sport’ that may be. This is an excerpt from local yoga teacher Nadine Fawell’s yogAttitude card and workbook set. The act of forgiving is one of immense power and self-healing. It’s a weird thing, grudge-holding, clutching on to anger and resentment, is an excellent way to make yourself sick. Also, depressed, frustrated, and teeming with the stress hormones associated with these emotional states. When we are extremely angry or outraged, it’s hard to see that forgiving is for our own good, not to let the person we are upset with off the hook, but it’s true. By forgiving, you reclaim all the energy you were using to nurture resentment, fury and regret. I know this from experience. When I was finally able to forgive my father for sexually abusing me as a child, I was able to heal - become whole. Now, I’ve got so much more energy! Don’t get me wrong, forgiving doesn’t mean abandoning healthy boundaries. I choose not to have my father in my life, because it’s just too dysfunctional for me, but I am not angry. I know he suffers about what he did. He is human. Just as I am. Do you have any old baggage you might like to get rid of? Do you think a bit of strategic forgiving might help the process along? A forgiving yogAttitude. Ask: • Am I holding a grudge against someone? • Could I consider releasing it? What would need to happen to make that possible?

By Nadine Fawell - Senior Yoga Teacher

• Do I carry anger or regret against myself? Am I able to release it? • If not, why? • If I can’t release it, is there a way I can come to acceptance that what was, was? • Do I understand that forgiveness is for me, and that being angry with someone hurts me much more than it does them? Unless you are a sociopath, of course, in which case you probably wouldn’t be reading this... If you enjoyed this piece, and would like to be calm and accepting and on top of forgiving, you can download sample pages of the yogAttitude workbook from http://yogawithnadine.com/free-stuff/ About Nadine: Nadine is a senior yoga teacher who drinks coffee all over Melbourne and leads healing retreats all over Oceania. Reclaim your energy through Forgiveness

Jon-Jon Goulian is one of the strangest people I’ve ever met. He’s also one of the sweetest, and his utterly lovable memoir is both heartbreaking and heart-warming, leaving you with an intense desire to give him a big hug - and maybe go out shopping with him. For anyone who has ever felt like a fish out of water, Goulian’s story strikes a familiar chord. On the surface, there was no real reason why he should have felt out of place. Growing up in the sunny beachside town of La Jolla, San Diego, surrounded by a family of doctors and lawyers and political philosophers, and blessed with a sharp intelligence and talent for soccer, he was all set on a very conventional path towards success. But at some point as a teenager, the expectations became paralysing. Plagued by an endless list of phobias, deeply insecure about his (mostly imaginary) physical flaws, and finding more things every day to fret about, Goulian was completely overwhelmed by fear, anxiety and self-loathing. His solution, without knowing why, was to start experimenting with androgyny. He shaved his legs, waxed his eyebrows, started wearing lip-gloss and eyeliner. Next came the sarongs, the leggings, the high heels. To this day at the age of 43, his midriff-skimming tank tops, low-waisted flannel skirts and chunky Steve Madden heels are all part of his signature look.

It’s carefully crafted, with each chapter structured to explore a particular source of anxiety in his life, from food, to sex, to his body, punctuated with letters from his father and grandparents begging for help in understanding why he is “doing nothing” with his life. Despite having a BA from Columbia and a law degree from NYU, he flits from one menial job to another, making just enough money to live. He’s instantly affectionate towards everyone he meets, but he still sometimes retreats into an apartment filled with stuffed animals, going for weeks or even months without talking to anyone. He is, in his own words, “vain, prissy, neurotic, body obsessed.” He declares, with a strange sort of pride, “I own nothing, save nothing, accomplish nothing tangible and have no permanent hold on life.” And yet far from being self-pitying, Goulian tells his story with amusement. He places all his weirdness on the table and laughs at it, showing compassion towards himself at the same time as he realises how strange he is. For someone who has spent so much of his life feeling uncomfortable in his own skin, there is a strong sense of self that comes through in this book, and it threads his anecdotes together in a story of self-acceptance that is touching and inspirational, without being overly sentimental.

The Man in the Gray Flannel Skirt is a brave and honest account of Goulian’s flailing search for a place in a world that doesn’t quite know what to do with him.

UNWIND

WANTED - DOCKLANDS BABY BOOMER BOWLERS! Are you a Baby Boomer looking for something different to do, a new challenge to conquer, have you thought about giving lawn bowls a try? Traditionally, in the eyes of many nonbowlers, bowls is considered a sport best

suited to those in “God’s waiting room”, but how wrong they are!

At the highest levels, whether it be competitive or suburban bowls, State and National Championships or the Commonwealth Games, more and more the game is being dominated by younger bowlers, from their late teens to the 30-somethings. But the game can be time consuming and is ideally suited to those with fewer family commitments, semi-retirees and “wanna-be” retirees. In other words, the glorious Baby Boomers!

Lawn Bowls is a very social game and couples often join a club together in order to have an active, common interest. And for those with the urge to compete, this may well be just the right time in your life to put some sporting silverware on the mantel piece, either for the first time or simply to add to your earlier sporting achievements.

The Club is located amidst the beautiful heritage-listed St Vincent Gardens, just off Ferrars Street in Albert Park. It is a strong and vibrant Club and has enjoyed considerable success in recent years, winning promotions and several pennant flags in the Saturday, Tuesday and night-time competitions. All the teams are mixed and selection is on merit alone.

As there are no bowling clubs in Docklands, Melbourne’s inner city suburbs provide many choices, but none better than the Albert Park Bowls Club.

New members are always made to feel at home, you’ll not only make new friends, you could be the next club champion in the making! Contact the Club on 9690 3592 or visit www. albertparkbowlsclub.com.au

Docklands Launch for 2011 Sailing World Cup Carnival On October 18 two of Australia’s best sailors, the 2011 Australian Freestyle Kiteboarding Champion, a handful of glamorous models, a fabulous new ambassador and yachts showcased sailing lifestyle for the launch of the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup, Sail Melbourne. The Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation, the Hon. Minister Delahunty said: “Melbourne has long been regarded as an international sporting capital and we are proud to support Sail Melbourne as it reaffirms the city’s position at the top of the world stage. Port Phillip Bay is one of Melbourne’s greatest landmarks and is recognised as a world class sailing destination.”

28

Sail Melbourne Chairman Bruce Griffiths, commented: “The last two years have seen Melbourne embrace sailing as part of the city’s event calendar as Sail Melbourne has grown bigger and better, with more competitors and spectators than ever before. We are also thrilled that two of our Australian crews, Malcolm Page and Mathew Belcher in the 470 class and Tom Slingsby in the Laser currently sit at the top of the world ranking, promising an exciting competition. Some of Australia’s best sailors, including two World Number One crews have officially announced their attendance at the first leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup as they prepare for next year’s London Olympics. World Champion and 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Tom Slingsby will be fighting to hold his title as the Laser Class World No. 1 alongside the likes of Malcolm Page and Mathew Belcher, who currently hold all of

the major titles in the Men’s 470 class. “I’m really looking forward to competing against world class athletes. With the Olympics fast approaching, everyone is gearing up for a challenging race,” said Tom Slingsby. Joining them on the water will be Olympic medal hopefuls Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, who recently had their third consecutive win at the 2011 Sail for Gold regattas and won gold at the Olympic test event. Nathan Outteridge has also just been named a finalist for the 2011 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year award. Winning the award this year would be back to back success for Australia, following Tom Slingsby becoming the first Australian to win the prestigious award last year. Olympic windsurfer Jessica Crisp will be using the competition to prepare for what will be her fourth straight Olympic Games appearance, while Melbourne born Krystal Weir has her

hopes set on making a triumphant comeback to the Games following a strong performance in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. ISAF Sailing World Cup November 6 - 12. For more information visit www.sailmelbourne.com.au
