PLACE OF WORSHIP SET FOR DOCKLANDS COMMUNITY The spiritual life of Docklands is about to be enlightened with proposals sought to build the first Place of Worship for the precinct, as announced by Planning Minister Matthew Guy in early September. Delivering on an election promise, Mr Guy announced that expressions of interest were being sought to develop a site in the northern part of Docklands. “Docklands is now a suburb, and like every suburb, it deserves space for a place of worship,” Matthew Guy said. In July 2012, Places Victoria in partnership with the City of Melbourne launched the Docklands Community and Place Plan which is a shared vision for the next decade of development in Docklands and details the community infrastructure and services to be delivered. One of 30 projects unveiled in the Docklands Community and Place Plan, the development could also include limited residential or retail uses to support and enhance the role of the centre.

“A new religious centre will provide significant community benefit bringing faith as well as education and training facilities for the Dockland’s community and emerging businesses,” Mr Guy added. Religious community leaders have welcomed the recent announcement. Rabbi Shlomo Nathanson of Chabad Jewish Community Centre in Port Melbourne which also comprises the Docklands and South Melbourne Chabad Jewish Communities is in support of a Place of Worship for residents and workers alike in the precinct. “This is great progress. Religious expression is crucial in every community. People need to know that they have a place where they feel comfortable to worship” said Rabbi Nathanson. This sentiment is also supported by Minister Guy who added “places of worship play an important role in the spiritual and emotional life

of a community. They can be a critical focal point, particularly for a new suburb such as Docklands, in bringing people together.” A 5,525 square metre site has been set aside for a Place of Worship on the Footscray Road and Little Docklands Drive intersection at Docklands. It is anticipated that the project will be underway by 2015. Places Victoria is keen to achieve this objective and has initiated a bid process to attract the broadest possible range of potential developers and operators.“The success of this initiative will be borne out of careful planning and comprehensive community consultation,” Mr Guy said. DOCKLANDS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE On September 18th the Annual General Meeting of Docklands Chamber of Commerce was held at the Studio at Etihad Stadium which saw a new Executive Committee appointed for the term of 2012/13. A strong contest for positions was apparent which eventuated in a new Executive Committee nominated and voted in by members, although how close the ballot, was unknown at print time. As a founding member Outgoing DCC President Keith Rankin outlined the dedication and commitment of the outgoing Docklands Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee on behalf of himself and Elena Tsapatolis, outgoing Vice President and offered their ongoing support to the incoming committee as continuing members. The 2012/13 incoming Executive Committee for the Docklands Chamber of Commerce is led by Stephen Clement (ING Real Estate) as President, Joh Maxwell (Tours on Trikes) as Vice President, Rick Deering ( SSKB) continuing in his role as Treasurer with ongoing executive members John McGaw (Destination Melbourne) and Sally Hewitt (Quest 111) now joined by Mark Wilson (3AW), Josephine Tan (Bank Of Queensland), Shane Scanlan (Docklands News) and Bill Reid (Reid Resources). The newly elected Executive Committee have committed to providing representation for all Docklands businesses and addressing both large and small business issues. They intend

to bring large corporate entities together with small business operators as well as the precinct developers into one medium to represent Docklands effectively. The new executive promises to work with key stakeholders to provide positive outcomes for the Docklands Business Community and to advocate in their best interests. Their aim is to work with Destination Docklands and all parties involved in the local media to optimise positive promotional opportunities and drive visitation to the precinct to optimise outcomes for all levels of business. The Docklands Chamber of Commerce also intends to work cohesively with local and state levels of government in representing the interests of Docklands businesses and DCC members as well as proactively with the Docklands Community Association. The new executive was vocal in their aim to build membership numbers by the end of 2013 by offering increased member benefits and high level networking opportunities while maximising member outcomes through close communication with neighbouring precincts under the umbrella of the Melbourne Business Precincts programme. 3008Docklands congratulates and commends both incoming and outgoing executive committees and looks forward to working together into the future. www.docklandscc.com.au
