Lord Mayor Confirms Run for Second Term Cr Robert Doyle has confirmed that he will run for a second term as Lord Mayor of Melbourne with Susan Riley as Deputy Lord Mayor.

Name Sought for Northbank Bridge An innovative bike and pedestrian bridge at Northbank will be the final piece of the jigsaw in connecting Docklands to the city centre, which will vastly improve pedestrian and cycling access along the northern bank of the Yarra River linking the city, Southbank and Docklands.

6

Cr Doyle told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell in April, “I think that there is some unfinished business I would like to see completed” and added that there were important projects he wanted to see delivered for Melbourne. “There are some projects I haven’t started Planning Minister Matthew Guy has amended the Melbourne Planning Scheme to ensure the timely delivery of the project. “I am delighted to announce the final stage of the Northbank project can now commence and invite Victorians to submit ideas to name the distinctive bridge that builds on Melbourne’s revitalised waterfront precinct,” Mr Guy said.

yet that I think are important for our city and I would like to see those projects through and completed.” Cr Doyle added that during his first term, city safety was a key achievement but that there was still more to do. Elections will be held in October of this year. 3008Docklands will forward your questions to the Lord Mayor and provide responses in upcoming issues. Email editor@3008docklands.com.au.

The bridge will be completed in 2013 and ideas for a name are currently open to the Victorian public. The Northbank project is an estimated $18 million investment in a partnership between the Department of Planning and Community Development and the City of Melbourne. The Victorian Government has contributed $16.5 million with Melbourne City Council providing $1.5 million to complete the project.

You Said... Can anyone explain why the sewerage works near South Wharf have finished but there’s a disgusting stink left behind? On a calm day, walk under the bridge where Wirundjeri Way crosses the Yarra, and you’ll really notice it. As well as being offensive, could it be a health hazard? Name Withheld.

Next Wave Festival Splashes across Docklands “Bleeding-edge contemporary art and searing, soaring exchange.” The 2012 Next Wave Festival challenges emerging artists to create urgent, risky, generous, ambitious, fun and essential art. Across thirtyeight projects, nine days and many unusual Melbourne locations, the Festival prompts audiences to reconsider what understandings of what contemporary art can be. Some local events of interest to take part in include: FLYWAY by Artist Elizabeth Dunn has investigated the enchanting nature of migratory birds, which fly from Siberia to Australia and back each year. While making her own migration from Victoria to her hometown on the Fraser Coast in Queensland, Elizabeth met an eccentric and wildly passionate community of ‘birders’, who inspired the creation of FLYWAY. Collaborating with renowned sound artist Lawrence English, FLYWAY uses video and audio material from this journey to create a spellbinding 90-minute experiential journey that leads audiences from Carlton through to Docklands to discover hidden video screens, inspirational creatures, and the spectacular natural cinema. Dates: 19-22, 24-27 May - 4pm departure from Carlton– finish by 5.30pm at Docklands www.flywayproject.net HULL is presented by visual artists Laura Delaney and Danae Valenza, a sound and visual art installation at the Mission to Seafarers at Docklands. Delaney and Valenza turn to the enigmatic seafaring community to take a more

intimate look at Melbourne’s connection to ports, patterns of migration and trade. Hull leads audiences through the eclectic spaces of the Mission: the domed seafarer’s gymnasium, the clubroom where Melbourne ladies danced with visiting seafarers in the 1920s, and the chapel shaped as an upturned boat, where many gather regardless of nationality or faith. Dates 19 – 27 May -10am-10pm (11am-10pm on Sundays 20 &27 May) Mission to Seafarers, 717 Flinders Street, Docklands www.nextwave.org.au The Stream / The Boat / The Shore / The Bridge places the audience at the centre of the action, asking a raft of hard questions while journeying overland and voyaging in a rowboat. Inspired by “what if?” scenarios and lateral thinking puzzles, the event brings participants together to make their own journey around – and over – the Yarra River. Guided by activities and events at each site, participants contribute their thoughts, choices and actions to decide how best to cross the river and reach the city. Along the way participants will see the site through new eyes from unexpected vantage points, to create an imaginative overlay upon a city space most often frequented by tourists and office workers. The defining wonder of By Design Event Group’s imagination truly came alive in Peninsula when guests were immersed in a tribal Amazon where dancers, perched above, captivated them with their primal curiosity and intimate stares. As guests became more infused with the whimsy of By Design Event Group’s creations and Atlantic Group [v]’s menu food innovations, a rush of 60 performers from Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance unveiled the entire Peninsula space to the attentive audience. Guests were by delighted as they were pulled into seven themed worlds within one, comprising Japan Orient, Moroccan Glamour, French Cabaret, Burlesque Showgirls, White Diamond 40’s Glamour, 18th Century Amadeus and Futuristic Gaga Wonderland. It was indeed a showcase spectacular, that was out of this world!

Melbourne based organisation, Moral Fairground, is once again running The Big Fair Trade Morning Break at NAB Forecourt on Friday 18th May. This is one of the many events that Moral Fairground has organised as part of the Victorian Fair Trade Festival – an event designed for Victorians to celebrate the annual Fair Trade Fortnight which takes place globally with events, festivals and activities happening all around the world to celebrate the Fair Trade movement and campaign for justice in trade practices and promote sustainable environment and social responsibility. Cheryl Kernot, Chair of the Fair Trade Association of Australia New Zealand (FTAANZ) says “Fair Trade Fortnight is the perfect time to remind everyone that by putting just one more fair trade product in your shopping basket you double the demand. This small act assists more vulnerable producers to lift themselves out of poverty. And every friend you tell who joins you in purchasing a fair trade product doubles the difference.”

LENNY HENRY - CRADLE TO RAVE

LENNY HENRY - CRADLE TO RAVE By Lisa Quittner

Acclaimed UK comedian, actor, writer, TV presenter, radio host and all-round Renaissance man Lenny Henry returns to his roots with a funky, funny and personal one man show, Cradle to Rave, about the thing he loves most: music. Cradle to Rave sets Henry’s family, first loves and fame against a musical backdrop – a comic cabaret voyage through his life told via its eclectic soundtrack. 3008Docklands spoke to Lenny about his upcoming Australian tour.

What can Australian audiences expect in your upcoming show Cradle To Rave?

BMG and Chris Blackwell at Island Records and hanging out with all these musicians – which for some reason comedians always seem to do, and then came a moment where I had to make a decision about whether I wanted to be a musician or a comedian.

Deep Purple and the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Simon & Garfunkel and Dylan and so on, so I had quite a varied musical input from an early age, so I hope that audiences will also see that I have quite an interesting life and upbringing from the beginning.

I went to see Trevor Horn who produced Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Seal and people like that and he listened to my demo and said “look, you have a pretty decent voice but if you are going to do this you are going to have to give up everything else, you will have to devote your life to music and do you really want to do that?” I had to make a hard decision because comedy had been my bread and butter; it had paid for

Is it true you grew up thinking Elvis was a relative due to all the pictures in your parent’s home?

The show is basically the story of my life told through music. I have had a parallel life in the past 30 plus Is it true you grew up thinking years as the first thing I ever Elvis was a relative due to all the did on stage was not tell jokes pictures in your parent’s home? or do impressions but actually It’s true, I thought he was a distant doing an impersonation of cousin; he was in pictures everywhere! Elvis Presley. I sang Jail House Rock for some surprised kids my Mum’s house! So I thought I better stick to at a disco and that has lived with me my whole the comedy and that was it, it was a big moment life. I started with jokes and impressions rather in my life and a little sad, but actually I have had than doing Elvis and I realised that I loved music such a wonderful career and I have been able to as a burning core in my soul and it has just impersonate just about every black pop star and always been that way , every time I do a comedy take the piss out of them, so I guess I have had show I always include an impersonation of a the musical involvement in my career anyway. singer and take the piss out of pop music, soul music or rock music because I just love it. This show has obviously been a ‘work in progress’ throughout your life, why did you I think what the audience will get out of the decide to embark on doing the show now? show is my love of music, hopefully they will go home and buy some more records and I think because this is the most personal show I maybe they’ll say that Lenny also knows how have ever done, comedians that do confessional to give us a good time out doing something material where they lay themselves bare I that isn’t his usual comedy show. This show really admire, but I have never been that type of is personal, it’s about me, It’s about music comedian. I have always talked about my family and the audience will be clapping their hands and friends on stage but not to the extent that I and having a great time while hearing about was revealing secrets or real truths about them my life story through music. My show is about or my life but with this show I felt ready to let go. R&B, pop and rock and I am really proud of it. I think as teenagers we all choose our music You have been so successful in your career tribe whether we like rock music, classical across a wide scope of creative disciplines as or pop etc, but my tribe was quite eclectic a comedian, radio host, TV presenter, writer, growing up made up of many tribes. I was Shakespearian actor, as well as an activist, a black kid who grew up in a predominantly and yet your one true love is music. What held white society and my mother told me at one you back from pursuing music as your career? point that I had to integrate if I wanted to fit in, otherwise I would always be a black There was a period in the 1980’s where people kid that just stayed within black circles. kept saying that I had a great singing voice and I should make a record and at the time I was I made friends with white kids and they doing demos for people like Simon Cowell at were listening to groups like Led Zeppelin,

10

It’s true, I thought he was a distant cousin; he was in pictures everywhere! Elvis was like a God in our house.

I believe you missed your cue during your theatrical debut as Othello listening to hip hop, what type of music soothes Lenny Henry’s Soul? It could really be anything, but there is one particular album from Bootsy Collins called Ahh…The Name is Bootsy, Baby! he has a funky side on that album and also a meditative side and that album seems to have been a constant backing track to my life. The other album I love is Brian Eno’s Discreet Music and everything in between from The Beatles to the Stones, Reggae, Simon & Garfunkel, dance music, Quincy Jones, Prince, Michael Jackson but as I get older and I am now learning the piano, there is a lot classical music creeping in there too.

As a one man show presenting a personal backdrop of your life, obviously with almost 40 years in the industry you are a seasoned professional but I assume this takes a fair bit of physical and mental stamina, how do you condition yourself to perform night after night? I go to the gym every day, I do Alexander Technique classes, yoga and meditation

2012 AUSTRALIAN TOUR

and I practice my material. A lot of rehearsal goes into every single show. I practice the piano for two hours each day and I write out the show all the time. I am very diligent, I have been doing this for 36 years and I have a method that I follow.

Lenny, is Cradle to Rave secretly the lead up to your Greatest Hits album release? (Laughs) No, I think everything I have done from the singing, standup comedy, acting and the wanting to be Elvis Presley has all led me to be doing this show. In show business you use everything you’ve got and this show is going to Rock!!

By Tom Elliott

A few weeks ago I returned from my honeymoon, all of which was spent in the United States. Like many Australians, my wife and I took advantage of the strong Aussie Dollar to enjoy ourselves in what used to be a relatively expensive travel destination. Unlike most honeymooners, however, I spent some time during our holiday trying to assess the state of the local economy. And my conclusion? America is now well past its financial low point. As a result, Australian holidaymakers should enjoy the States cheaply while they still can. Only a year ago, my opinion of the US economy was rather different. Government debt was rampaging out of control, retailers were going backwards, the American car industry was still in decline and house prices were yet to hit their lows.

Since then, however, quite a lot has changed. With regard to the debt burden both inherited and increased by President Obama’s administration, long term interest rates in America have actually fallen over the past twelve months. This means that although reducing the public sector debt remains a challenge for the US government, servicing it isn’t too difficult for the time being. Part of the reason American rates have remained so low is that the recent and well publicised bout of financial strife in Europe has reminded investors that the US$ may be a better bet than the Euro.

As to retail, like their Australian counterparts American shopkeepers have had to contend with the threat posed by online sales. Unlike local chains such as Myer, David Jones and Harvey Norman, however, American retailers have already learnt to combine ‘bricks with clicks’, ie physical shopfronts with a well funded online present. To do otherwise in the hyper competitive US marketplace would have meant oblivion, a fact that still appears to

elude some of the local chains. This combined with a newly emboldened consumer means that American retail chains have recently reported increases in both sales and profits. In similar fashion, despite suffering a near death experience during the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-09, the Big Three US carmakers (ie Ford, GM and Chrysler) have this year experienced their best few months in years. It seems that expensive American petrol prices (just topping the equivalent of A$1.00 per litre!) are causing buyers to seek out new and more fuel efficient models in their hundreds of thousands. The only downside to this for a car fanatic like me is that the traditional American ‘Yank Tank’ now seems very much a thing of the past. Finally, in contrast to my trip there a year ago, the general opinion now is that US house prices have reached their bottom and appear likely to rebound. Driving this is a combination of cheap finance, lack of new construction activity and a still increasing population – with much of the latter being driven by the long

term American growth engine of immigration. As home prices still form a major component of US household wealth, it is unsurprising that a turnaround in values might be accompanied by a rise in consumer confidence. So what does all of this mean for Australia? Two main things: First, even as the Chinese economy shows signs of slowing, any pick up in demand from the US could maintain a floor under global growth – which is good news for commodity prices, upon which so much of our wealth depends. And second, if my conclusions here about the US are correct, then the A$ might have already seen its high water mark against the greenback, meaning that next year’s trip might cost a little more than the lovely honeymoon just finished. How to Maximise Account Based Pensions through your Self-Managed Superannuation By Andrew Hewison Before I kick off, let’s set the scene – An account based pension (ABP) is an income stream drawn from an individual’s superannuation balance. A condition of release must be met before an ABP can be drawn, that being 55 years of age and retired, or have entered into a transition to retirement strategy where a person continues working and contributing to super, but draws an income to a maximum of 10% of their balance per annum. This strategy is beneficial as the income drawn is either concessionally taxed, or not taxed at all and once it begins the individual’s super balance ceases to pay tax on its earnings or realised capital gains within the fund. Every person’s superannuation is made up of two components, taxable and non-taxable. Taxable components generally comprise of pre-tax contributions, such as employer contributions. Generally speaking, this means

14

254145_OPT13799_95x220_O.indd 1

that at some point tax will be deducted by the Government when the money comes back out (either by way of income tax or at the death of the member). Non-taxable components comprise of contributions made post tax, such as sale proceeds of a house after capital gains tax is deducted. When drawing an ACP we generally want to provide an outcome whereby taxable components are exhausted and we are left with only non-taxable components in the fund. But how can we do this? Once both taxable and non-taxable components are mixed up in the fund together we are unable to select where we draw the ACP from. It MUST be drawn proportionally from each component, unless we can somehow isolate these separate components… The most effective strategy available is to begin separate pensions as various contributions are made to super. For

example, a pension could be started using the accumulation of super contributions, in this case $600,000, throughout the working life of an individual (majority being taxable component). This balance is now isolated in pension number 1. No further contributions can be added to this pension. In addition, an investment property is sold and after tax, a $400,000 contribution is made to super (non-taxable component). A second pension is then established from this contribution. Within this fund there are now two pensions operating independently of each other. The superannuation member and/or their Financial Adviser have flexibility in determining where their withdrawals will come from, subject to the statutory minimums being met. Considering that an ABP drawn from the taxable component is included as assessable income to a person between 55-60 years of age, it may be advisable to maximize withdrawals from pension number two, however, once 60 years of age all ABPs become non-taxable to the member,

therefore maximizing the drawdown on pension number one makes most sense. Furthermore, once retired and assuming the member is under 65 years of age, operating two pensions allows the member the flexibility to make a lump sum withdrawal of around $450,000 from pension one and re-contribute to their super fund as a non-taxable contribution. The result being the vast majority, if not all, of their super balance is now a non-taxable component! Final word – for ease of administration and account keeping, when preparing the year end accounts, some Accountants choose to commute/rollover these pensions into one. It is important to consider implications of this action as it could spell the end to the effectiveness of the above strategies. 6 Ways To Make Your Website More Profitable Your website is the central information hub for your business, so it’s necessary that you have clear and engaging content that communicates the right things about your product or service. Here are 6 ways you can instantly improve your website today:

this question, you start eliminating any unnecessary information from your website that’s not helping to promote your business.

5. State benefits not features

The estimated average viewing time your customer spends on your website is around 3 to 8 seconds. It’s important that within that small timeframe, you command their attention with an engaging headline.

Customers buy benefits not features! All your features have a benefit and you should never assume your customers know what that benefit is. It’s your job to communicate the benefits to them. For example, a feature of a car might be ABS brakes but the benefit of owning a car with ABS breaks is that it may one day save your life.

2. Avoid chunks of texts

6. Use “you” orientated language:

Your website should allow your customers to easily scan through your content, so they can locate the information they require with total ease. One way to effectively do this is to incorporate bullet points and sub-headlines into your copy, helping prompt your customers to the information they need quickly.

When your customers read your website, they want to know how your product or service can advantage them. Far too many times businesses focus heavily on themselves using words like “us,” “we” and “I.” By changing these words to “you”, your website content becomes more customer focused and keeps your customers engaged.

1. Grab attention with a good headline

3. Answer your most important questions Your homepage is the most important page on your website as it’s often the first point of call for your customers. Use your homepage to answer the most important questions your customers frequently ask about your business.

4. Make every word count

Make these changes today and start enjoying a more profitable website for your business.

MELBOURNE ICE – CELEBRATING 10 YEARS WITH HISTORY IN THE MAKING

By Lisa Quittner The Melbourne Ice kicked off their campaign for a third Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) Premiership in the local derby match against Melbourne Mustangs on April 28th at the Medibank Icehouse with a nail biting finish as Jason Baclig scored a final shootout goal allowing Melbourne Ice to snare a 6-5 win, with a following 5-2 defeat over the Canberra Knights on April 29th for a 2 out of 2 opening season weekend extravaganza. This is a huge year for Melbourne Ice, celebrating their tenth year in the competition and aiming to achieve three successive championships, known as a 3PEAT which has never been done in the history of the Australian Ice Hockey League, following on from back to back premierships in 2010 and 2011. From its inception, the not for profit club has thrived, attributing much of its success to the dedication of volunteers and the growing legion of fans that give of their time and 16

huge impact. The first home game played at Docklands in 2010 drew the largest crowd in the history of Australian Ice hockey, a great beginning to what has become the forefront destination for the sport of ice hockey and winter sports in general. “Docklands is a great precinct, the Medibank Icehouse is our home, we are really proud to be based here and we are grateful to Medibank not only for sponsoring the Icehouse, but the team as well.”

expertise without reservation. As Melbourne Ice President Andrew Lamrock explained, from the very start one constant has remained - a sense of family.

In the two years that Andrew Lamrock has led the team, his focus has been to commercialise and grow the brand while maintaining the intrinsic values of the club. Arguably, Melbourne Ice is one of the most professionally run sporting clubs nationally within the amateur league.

“The fact that we are volunteer based, the fact that everything we do is delivered by volunteers is testament to the many thousands of people that have been involved in the club over the past 10 years, no one single person can take the credit alone. It is the integrity and values of the people within the club that has created a sense of family, Melbourne’s biggest family. ” Andrew Lamrock said.

While behind the scenes Melbourne Ice is clearly in good hands, the team itself has produced great success as an independent club in the league. Originally, the Goodall Cup (AIHL premiership cup) was contested on an interstate level, since the latter part of last century, no other independent team in the AIHL has won back to back premierships with a better than fair chance of achieving a 3PEAT.

Over the past 10 years the ethos, values and structure of the Club hasn’t changed which is a reflection on how Melbourne Ice was founded. The club’s second president, Josh Puls, who is now a Patron of Melbourne Ice, managed to galvanise the hard work of Mark Weber before him and set in place the core values that the club continues to operate under.

Canadian recruit, Jason Baclig began his ice hockey career at Wayne State University after receiving a full athletic hockey scholarship. After four years at WSU he played professional ice hockey in Germany for a year, before two years in the Netherlands competing in the Dutch Elite League winning two championships.

Passion is an understatement, when speaking with current president Andrew Lamrock who despite holding high level positions in the corporate sector gives up to 40 hours a week of his time voluntarily. “My tenure as President of Melbourne Ice is to me the most important thing on my resume, it is the most important thing in my life and it is what I am most proud of” he adds. Membership has grown from 88 two years ago to 450 so far this year and growing, revenue turnover has grown almost ten-fold in the same period. Andrew adds that being based at the Icehouse at Docklands and sponsored by Medibank has also had a

Jason Baclig is proud to be part of Melbourne Ice with his fellow international recruits and attributes the sense of family at the club as a great motivator to remain in Melbourne. Jason is also known as the ‘Ninja on Ice’ for his ability and agility on the ice to dodge and speed out of perilous situations and has become an integral member of the Melbourne Ice team. “I really feel I have been accepted here by my team mates, the committee and our fan base as a part of this team. Although I am a family man and far away from home, I feel welcome here and I have made the transition easily. My journey has been really interesting so far and it has been

such a bonus to work, train and play at the Medibank Icehouse” says Jason. The latest recruit to Melbourne Ice is Doug Wilson Junior, the son of Chicago Blackhawks legend Doug Wilson. Doug Junior is also Assistant Operations Manager at NHL (U.S National Hockey League) powerhouse the San Jose Sharks and is charged with pursuing business and sporting opportunities with the Melbourne Ice, with a partnership with the Sharks high on the agenda. Despite international recruits, each team member of Melbourne Ice has been equally important in achieving their success to date. These players are enormously committed and dedicate 5 months of the year to the AIHL season, training with the team 2-3 times a week as well as on their own and travelling most weekends. Several of these players are as physically fit and capable as an AFL player but unlike most other sporting codes, they take the time to engage with their fans and sign autographs after a match. The coaching and player support crew and sponsors are a critical component to the “family”. The health and wellbeing of the players is of the utmost importance. Ice hockey is catching on with lightening speed; it is the ultimate team gladiator sport giving spectators an up-close experience. The motto “be part of the action” couldn’t be more fitting, you can feel the action, the spirit, the passion and the fire on the ice, spectators physically see and feel the glass around the rink shake. And don’t think this a blokes sport either, 41 per cent of spectators are female and they love it. This is an exciting year for Melbourne Ice with much to reflect on over the past 10 years and so much to look eagerly toward. This is also an exciting time for the Melbourne community to join Melbourne’s biggest family and be part of the action! The AIHL season runs from April 28 – August 19 To purchase tickets please visit www.icehouse.com.au. For further information on the team, membership or sponsorship visit: melbourneice.com.au

Living in Season Those of us who live in the city tend to forget this natural cycle of things and we are inclined to get out of rhythm with our environment. Our children and teenagers want to grow up faster than ever, and are not content just being in their childhood stage. Adults try to reverse the natural aging cycle with surgery, instead of being happy and proud of the stage they are at. It’s situations like this that nature has a lot to teach us.

By Nicole Hutcheson - Kinesiology Practitioner & Instructor Everything in life has a natural rhythm. In nature, these rhythms are represented in the seasons- Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Those who have a connection with the earthsuch as farmers or gardeners know and understand these seasons. Spring is the time to plant, Summer is when everything is flourishing and starting to bloom, Autumn is when we harvest, and Winter is the time to rest, reflect and prepare the ground for our next cycle.

In other areas of our life, we expect instant results without putting in the work beforehand. Take money for example. How much time do you spend thinking and reflecting on what you really want (Winter), planning a budget on how you are going to pay for it (Spring), saving and working hard for it (Summer) and then purchasing and enjoying our accomplishment (Autumn)? Most of us just charge our credit card or take out a bank loan, then find ourselves paying much more for things that we don’t really need. It‘s not about taking a whole year to purchase something, or waiting for Winter to start your savings

The simple things… By Tahlia Mandie – Psychotherapist & Family Counsellor School holidays have come and now they have gone. The Easter holidays seem soooo long ago. The daily hustle and bustle and chaos continues… and so we wait for that next break. It seems like only yesterday that I found out I was pregnant again. But now… the waiting game is on. Time just seems to have crept closer and closer to “B Day”!

18

And so I realise, sometimes it is the simple things that matter. The little things. The tiny things. No sooner do we have time to spare, it evaporates so very quickly. What seems like something so far away will creep up on you in a second, literally! Confession… I often lose sight of the little things, the small things, the things that seem insignificant, but I understand that this insignificant occurrence

plan. You can move through this entire seasonal rhythm in a week or a month. It’s natural to be in different seasons in all different areas of your life.

Many people have the same attitude about diets. Instead of planning a realistic nutrition and exercise routine (Spring), working hard, strengthening and nourishing our body (Summer) so we can feel healthier and be proud of our results (Autumn), and lead a happier and more balanced life as a result (Winter), we find ourselves turning to diet pills and shakes that promise instant results with no effort required. This goes against the natural cycle of life, and the results don’t last. Again- it’s not about taking a whole year to achieve your result- it’s about the cycle rather than the time it takes. Social Media and technology has also meant that we are missing this natural cycle in relationships too- whether personal or professional. We are losing the art of nourishing our relationships, we’re no longer putting in the time to watch them grow and bloom. We have forgotten these vital steps.

The message of these cycles is that you don’t have to be at your peak in every area of your life at all times. The rest stage is just as important to the success of your overall goal as the working hard stage. It’s natural to be in different seasons in all different areas of your life. So coming into the season of Winter next month, try to allocate some time for relaxation and reflection. You will feel more calm, balanced and focused. Try to get back to your natural body rhythm. Try not to force things and let them happen naturally. Life is a lot easier when you let it flow. Most people wouldn’t have a pie without sauce as they are just meant to be. Likewise diet and exercise work best for weight loss when they are teamed together. As a personal trainer I try to make sure each of my clients has a massive ‘pie with sauce’. I pass on as much dietary information as possible to go with their exercise as both work together in helping you achieve your weight or fitness goals. I like to know my clients have enough knowledge after training at dluxe so that they can maintain or even better, improve on their results on their own. You see a lot of ‘diet’ plans out there at the moment are promising 5 - 10kgs

of weight loss over 8 weeks that don’t involve any physical activity. This is just silly, because once you ‘go off’ the diet, inevitably you put the weight back on. Your body needs a method to burn off your food intake, that is where exercise comes in, it keeps your metabolism working. Exercise on its own will not work if you keep eating poorly. It wouldn’t matter if you trained for two hours a day, if you keep eating junk food two meals a day, you won’t even burn

off what you have consumed for the day. Therefore, you may get even heavier than what you started at. So after hearing all of this, can you see how combining exercise and dietary changes is essential to achieving your goals. You must burn more energy through exercise than what you consume in your diet. It is just like the pie and sauce, the pie on its own is ok, but combining it with sauce, well you have a great pie.

Remember your lifestyle doesn’t have to change drastically to get results. Take it one step at a time. Too often people try to make big changes at once. Small steps, a little extra exercise, and taking one ‘bad’ food out of your diet will get you on the way, then build from there.

If you have been inactive for more than three months or have an existing medical condition always check with your doctor before commencing an exercise program.

‘Forecast: Turbulence’ by Janette Turner Hospital Dark clouds, harsh winds and the threat of hurricanes blow throughout Janette Turner Hospital’s exquisitely crafted collection of short stories, saturating the slim volume with an unsettling sense of dread. Forecast: Turbulence brings together a compelling cast of characters, each somehow floundering in an uncertain world. Some stories are gentle and elegiac; others are intense to the point of horror. Each one demonstrates Hospital’s incredible mastery of storytelling, creating richly complex worlds that pull the reader right into their centre. In the opening story, Blind Date, we are introduced to Lachlan, a young boy hovering in the background of preparations for his sister’s wedding, wondering if his estranged father will appear. Lachlan is blind, but he can tell light from dark and reads the footsteps and vibrations of movement of the people around him, and in his mind he vividly recalls the soapy scent of his father’s freshly laundered shirt and his parting words: “I’m drowning, mate, and I just can’t breathe.” The drowning metaphor is then deftly woven into the following story, where a skipper of a whale-watching boat, who hasn’t spoken since his mother was killed by sharks, ruminates on stories of American World War II servicemen also killed at sea.

20

We also meet a lonely man obsessed with his beautiful neighbour, two sisters whose world is turned upside down when their father is publically exposed as a paedophile, and a couple whose child is kidnapped from his pram outside a bakery. The vulnerability of children is a common thread throughout the collection, sometimes taking us to deeply disturbing places. In Weather Maps, two young girls meet in the waiting room of the prison where they are both forced to visit their abusive stepfathers. In the bathroom, they compare scars, cuts and bruises, both agreeing that “it’s better when you do it to yourself.” And yet, there are lighter moments to balance out the dark undercurrents. At the centre of the collection is Hurricane Season, a story about a young boy and his grandmother waiting for a hurricane to descend on South Carolina. Here, the rough weather is seen as something beautiful and thrilling, despite the danger it presents. The boy dreams of pirates; his grandmother hears the voice of an old lover in the wind. Hospital’s carefully constructed narratives achieve what the all the best short stories should - presenting a sliver of a world that is intriguing and real, all within a tightly contained space. With its masterful pacing, rich variety of characters and a trove of moments that will linger in your mind, Forecast: Turbulence confirms Hospital’s place as one of Australia’s best contemporary fiction writers.

Grease an 18 cm-square cake tin and line base with baking paper, leaving some overhanging to help ease cake out (it can’t be inverted onto a cake cooling rack). Otherwise, grease a 20cm springform cake tin.

As part of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea (ABMT) fundraising to assist in the fight against cancer, renowned chef and Victorian of the Year, Stephanie Alexander shares her recipe for an easy plum cake to entice big donations from your guests. This cake could be made with other stone fruit, although they will not produce the same dramatic effect as plums, which leave deep-purple juice oozing into the cake. This is a cake to make and eat on the same day. INGRDIENTS • 9 0g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 1 cup plain flour • 1 tsp cream of tartar • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda • a pinch salt • 1 free-range egg • 2-3 tbsp buttermilk or milk • 65g caster sugar • 6-8 large ripe plums (preferably purple-fleshed, such as a blood plum), halved, stoned and cut into 2-3 pieces • 2 tsp pure icing sugar (optional) • double cream, to serve STREUSEL MIXTURE • • • • •

30g soft brown sugar ½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp ground cinnamon ¹⁄³ cup plain flour 30g unsalted butter, chopped

Method Preheat oven to 180°C.

Sift flour, cream of tartar, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a bowl. Whisk egg with 2 tablespoons of the buttermilk or milk. Cream butter and sugar until pale and thick in a food processor. Tip in flour mixture and pulse to mix quickly. Add egg/buttermilk mixture and process just until you have a smooth batter; it should be a dropping consistency. If it is quite stiff, mix in remaining buttermilk (this will depend on size of egg used). Scrape butter into prepared tin and smooth the top. Press plum into batter in rows or circles. Scatter over streusel mixture. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the edges comes out clean (it will still test soft in the middle where plum juice has oozed into cake batter). Cool cake in tin on a cake cooling rack until just warm. Lift cake out using overhanging baking paper to assist, then transfer to a plate. Carefully lift base of cake with wide spatula and ease paper out. Dust cake with icing sugar, if desired, and serve with double cream. Serves 6-8. This recipe is from Stephanie Alexander’s Kitchen Garden Companion, Lantern, RRP $125, 2009. Rasta Thomas’ -

Rock the Ballet 2012 Australian Tour Interview by Rebecca Howden Having performed over 1000 shows during sell out seasons across the globe since its inception in 2007, Rasta Thomas’ Rock the Ballet returns to Australia with its fusion of classic Ballet technique combined with the excitement of musical theatre, hip hop, martial arts, tap, contemporary, gymnastics and more!

Rasta Thomas’ Rock the Ballet features a stellar soundtrack including some of the biggest hits from U2, Michael Jackson, Prince, Queen, Coldplay and Lenny Kravitz. Set against a backdrop of video projected scenery, the show is exciting, fun, fleshy, raunchy, powerful and brilliantly entertaining. 3008Docklands spoke to Rasta Thomas on the eve of the Australian Tour. What is the inspiration behind the show? Rock the Ballet was created to inspire a new generation of dance lovers. To wake up and excite the dance world and give the audience a show full of energy, passion, technique and great music! Rock the Ballet has had over 1000 performances around the world since its first in 2007. How has the show changed and evolved since then? The show changes a little every night! With every new dancer, or new step, the show has new life. We have a solid show with wonderful choreography by Adrienne Canterna, who

allows the dancers to really feel the music and the energy of each other and the audience. How is the soundtrack, scenery and other special effects used to enhance and complement the movement? Everything is meant to complement each other. The show should feel genuine and full of personality. This includes the dancers, the music, the lights, costumes, video projections etc. How does the Bad Boys of Dance challenge ideas about masculinity? We don’t challenge masculinity, we define it.

Where do you see the future of dance (and in particular, ballet) heading? I hope it is heading in an open direction.
