VEC recommends increased number of councillors for Melbourne City Council The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) released its final representation review report on March 21st, putting forward a recommended electoral structure for Melbourne City Council. The report has been sent to the Minister for Local Government, The Hon. Jeanette Powell, for her consideration. The VEC recommends that Melbourne City Council remain unsubdivided and that the number of councillors be increased to nine, in addition to the Lord Mayor and the Deputy Lord Mayor.

Electoral Commissioner Steve Tully said: ‘A wide variety of views were put forward during the review. All information, including submissions, was carefully considered by the panel of staff and local government experts to reach this recommended electoral structure.’ The VEC commenced the review with background research in October and has held two rounds of public submissions, three public information sessions and a public hearing during the process. The VEC also considered the municipality’s demographics

and growth potential and the electoral structure of similar municipalities before making its recommendation. If the Minister endorses the recommendation, changes to Melbourne City Council will be put in place for the next council general election to be held on Saturday, 27 October 2012. The final report is available on the VEC website (vec.vic.gov.au), by calling 131 VEC (131 832) and from the Melbourne Town Hall Administration Building, 120 Swanston Street, Melbourne.

A PIECE OF HISTORY MAKES ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT DOCKLANDS proud to bring Ancient Rome to the people of Australia, an exhibition which vividly recreates the ancient Rome of Julius Caesar, Augustus, Nero, Caligula, Cicero, Hadrian and Virgil, as well as exploring the mighty Empire’s greatest feats of architecture and engineering.

The world premiere of ‘Ancient Rome: Explore the Empire that Shaped the World’ launches for the first time on the 31st of March at The Waterfront City Pavilion, Docklands. Created by the Artisans of Florence and bought to Australia by Melbourne-born Artisan Tom Rizzo, the exhibition will showcase over 50 intricately designed pieces featuring Roman war machines, catapults, mosaics, the Colosseum and much more. Mr. Rizzo, the only non-Florentine born artisan in the guild, was part of the team that reconstructed the ancient technology used by the Romans for this spectacular exhibition. Dedicated to the history of Rome, the Artisans of Florence have spent years perfecting the technology and have hand-crafted each piece utilising original materials such as wood, rope, clay and bronze, with each individual piece taking the Artisans up to six months to complete. Beginning in the 1960s, only six men have earned the coveted title of ‘Artisan’ in the Artisans of Florence. Mr. Rizzo was introduced by his father to the Artisans and studied for seven years with the fellowship before taking on the title himself. The highly acclaimed Artisans of Florence have won awards and accolades around the globe, including the prized “Italia che lavora” award from the Italian Government in acknowledgement of their contribution to Italian culture and the arts. LIFE on the waterfront JENSON BUTTON LENDS SUPPORT TO YOUTH ROAD SAFETY LAUNCH AT DOCKLANDS Before he sped into Formula 1 glory at the Australian Grand Prix, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes’ Jenson Button attended the launch held at Docklands in support of a unique road safety and driver behaviour program that aims to reduce Australia’s road toll. CAMS Ignition teaches Australian youth aged 12 - 18, safe driving behaviours and attitudes in both a classroom environment as well as behind the wheel of a car. The unique program is run by Australia’s peak motor sport body, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS).

CAMS Ignition forms part of Australia’s efforts to support the FIA’s and the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, which aims to reduce road deaths and injuries across the world. Nearly 1.3 million people die every year on the world’s roads, and up to 50 million are injured. CAMS Ignition covers the theory and practical applications on safe driving behaviour and attitude and increases understanding about the different aspects that impact on safe driving such as distractions, peer pressure, alcohol, and road conditions.

An interactive classroom environment will teach participants basic principles of safe driving, vehicle safety technology, and most importantly, issues of attitude and self-awareness.

APRIL COVER

2012 Melbourne International By Lisa Quittner Melbourne, the wait is over. Judith Lucy is back with her new show, Nothing Fancy! In 2012, one of the country’s most popular comedians is back on stage after a three year hiatus, with no singing, no dancing, just gags about everything from meditation to beards. And maybe some talk of party pies. Judith went on an insightful, yet hilarious quest in 2011 to discover something to believe in... and managed to turn it into a smash hit show for ABC1, in Judith Lucy’s Spiritual Journey.

pies.... at one point in the show, I refer to breasts as flesh party pies, and you’ll just have to come to the show to know what I am talking about! After a 3 year break from live shows, a busy year with the TV series, a move to Sydney, and working on ‘Nothing Fancy’ what prompted your return to the stage? Money! Quite simply, I went see my Manager Kev and I said “Kev, I really need a job” and he turned his hand into a fist and said “is this thing on”, imitating a microphone.

Judith Lucy

Presents

“Nothing Fancy” Judith generously gave of her time to talk about her new show and offered plenty of laughs in our recent chat for 3008Docklands. You will be performing your new show “Nothing Fancy” at the MICF, where did you source your material for the new show and what’s with the party pies references? Well, honestly, essentially I just bang on about myself, that’s all it really is, and probably the reason I don’t do Facebook or Tweet because essentially a status update for me is basically a new show. I haven’t done a new show for three years so basically I’ll just be talking about everything that has been happening to me since the last live show, and that is me talking about my personal life, the things I have been thinking about as well as the things that irritate me.

{

My shows are like one big catch up, like going on a group date with the audience. And as for the party

12

I have been incredibly lucky, while it is great when I get to write a book or do a TV series, the backbone of my career has always been stand up, so I think it will always be one of those things that I will have a love/hate relationship with. I love being on stage and doing the shows, but you end up spending a lot of time on your own in hotel rooms and that’s not so much fun. After a few weeks doing the show in Sydney and I must say, it has been great to be back on stage again. Do you have a pre - show routine to get you into the zone before live performances? It’s really kind of boring, in the old days it used to be a cigarette and a drink and nowadays it’s a voice warm up, a lot of deep breathing and crossing my fingers. You are a household name in Australia as a comedian; you are also a bestselling author and have worked extensively on film and radio,

what do you most enjoy about performing at the MICF, how do Melbourne audiences rate? You are really making me sound a lot more famous than I am, but thank you very much, considering I was recently asked by a security guard if I still work at Wodonga TAFE! What I love about Melbourne audiences is that you can never be complacent with them and you have to work hard but once your foot is in the door, you foot is well and truly in the door. I found that in moving to Melbourne, it took me a while to actually get to know Melbourne. At first all the people I met were from interstate, I met more people from Perth than when I lived there. It took a while but when Melbourne people let you in they completely let you in and that is a great thing about this city. With over 20 years in the business has your perspective on comedy and what you find funny or ironic changed over time? I think it probably changes a bit as you get older, but I think some of the things I used to find funny as a 20 year old I still tend to find funny. I was a huge Steve Martin fan and I watched his stand up video over and over again and I reckon if I put that back on now I would still laugh at it. You like to think that as you get older you get a bit more sophisticated, but I’m probably just living in a dream world. What do you think is the key to longevity as a comedian; it’s a pretty tough gig to pursue for a career? Oh, If I knew that...(she laughs) I have absolutely no idea, I’m just eternally grateful that I have been going for over 20 years and people are still kind enough to still want to buy a ticket. Your 2011 TV series “Judith Lucy’s Spiritual Journey’ was hilarious with plenty of laugh out loud moments, in your quest to find something to believe in, what did you ultimately discover and can we expect to see another TV series in the future? I went into the show trying to be as open as possible, the only thing that really stands between me and insanity is a bit of yoga and meditation and that didn’t really change through the show.

I guess what inspired me most doing the series was the amazing people I met like Rebecca the nun, Peter Kennedy and Bruce Kirk, who was amazing, and the incredible experiences I had. I came away really respecting the people that are still questioning and don’t proclaim to know all the answers. I have great admiration for the people that are still looking for the answers. I am hoping to get another series up on the ABC, so fingers crossed there. What would audiences be most surprised to learn about the off stage Judith Lucy? The onstage me is just me but blown up to nth degree. I would hate people to think I was like that all the time. Let’s face it, I talk a lot about my personal life, I don’t there is a lot people don’t know! Judith Lucy – Nothing Fancy When: Sun 15th – Sun 22nd April Where: Comedy Theatre 240 Exhibition St, Melbourne Tickets: From $30 - $40 Bookings: www.comedyfestival.com.au or Ticketmaster 1300 660 013 or at the door

Melbourne international comedy festival

Comedy Festival Tom Gleeson – “Good One” By Lisa Quittner For the tenth year in a row, one of Australia’s best comedians, Tom Gleeson returns to the stage at the 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, with a brand new show –‘Good One’. In 2011 Tom toured across Australia before returning to the invite-only Catlaughs Comedy Festival in Ireland and the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. Oh, and the biggest stand up on the planet, Louis CK chose Tom to be his support act for his Australian tour. 3008Docklands spoke to Tom about his new show and being part of one of the best international comedy festivals in the world. What motivated your new show, “Good One”? The Melbourne Comedy Festival (MICF) is one of the biggest comedy festivals in the world and I live just down the road in Romsey. I’d be an idiot to not get involved. I love it. I’m a comedian. It’s the one time of year where I get to feel a little bit like a rock star. How will this show differ from your past shows at the MICF? I’ve become a father for the first time. I feel like I’ve been plugged back into life. I’m back in the game. I see my parents differently too. Not because I’m a father, but because my mum did stand up for the first time and she killed! Contrary to popular belief, comedy is a serious business. You have won the comics choice award at the MICF and have been twice nominated for a Helpmann Award, while working regularly on TV and radio, has having such great success in your career make writing and performing easier or harder, is there more pressure and expectation on you with each show? It’s definitely easier, I know people will turn up to the show. So now all I have to do is think up some ideas that I want to get out there.

The pressure is fine, I’d rather the pressure of not letting down a sold out audience than the pressure of trying to get people to turn up. I’m good under pressure, that’s why I love stand up. When I get heckled my heart rate slows down. You have performed for over 10 years consecutively, has the festival changed over years and have Melbourne audiences changed? The audiences are a lot more switched on these days. They’ve done their research, they’ve looked you up on YouTube so you can’t get away with doing tired old routines and it has to be tastier than something you could just see on TV. Audiences now have the entire history of comedy available online. Where did your earliest inspirations for becoming a comic originate from and who in the world of comedy inspires you today? I used to learn Bill Cosby bits and Monty Python sketches off by heart and recite them to my mates at boarding school. They’re an influence. Last year, I did the support slot for US stand up legend Louis CK on his Australian tour, he told me that I was good, so if that doesn’t inspire you, I don’t know what will. Good One with Tom Gleeson Showing Until: Sunday 22nd April Where: Victoria Hotel & Melbourne Town Hall Ticket Prices: From $24 - $30 Bookings: www.comedyfestival.com.au or Ticketmaster 1300 660 013 or at the door

DANCE OF THE RAYs

220 million years ago dinosaurs were beginning their domination of Earth. But another group of reptiles was about to make an extraordinary leap: pterosaurs were taking control of the skies. The story of how and why these mysterious creatures took to the air is more fantastical than any fiction.

The Melbourne Aquarium is the place to be for family fun for all ages throughout the year, but this school holidays, a unique group of aquatic dancers will perform a natural phenomenon unlike anything seen before in Melbourne.

In Flying Monsters 3D, Sir David Attenborough the world’s leading naturalist, sets out to uncover the truth about the enigmatic pterosaurs, whose wingspans of up to 40 feet were equal to that of a modern day jet plane. The central question and one of the greatest mysteries in palaeontology is: how and why did pterosaurs fly? How did creatures the size of giraffes defy gravity and soar through prehistoric skies? Driven by the information he finds as he attempts to answer these questions, Attenborough starts to unravel one of science’s more enduring mysteries, discovering that the marvel of pterosaur flight has evolutionary echoes that resonate even today. Flying Monsters 3D is a groundbreaking film that uses cutting-edge 3D technology and CGI to bring the story of giant flying monsters and their prehistoric world to life on the giant IMAX screen. Audiences of all ages will be in awe as they enter the world and experience, as never before, REAL Flying Monsters – in 3D! By Tahlia Mandie – Psychotherapist & Family Counsellor

By Lisa Quittner Recently, I visited the new resource centre and children’s bookshop located on the ground floor of the Harbour Family and Children’s Centre at Victoria Harbour. I discovered an enchanting world of vibrant and colourful children’s picture books and a range of interesting, cuddly and educational toys and games for children aged zero to six, as well as a wide selection of resource books for students and professionals in the field of children’s early learning, many of which are only available through Gowrie Victoria bookstores. I met the delightful Meaghan, who runs the bookshop and conducts Storytime sessions from 3pm on Wednesday to Friday afternoons, but Meaghan is more than happy to engage children with stories at anytime of the day. Although obviously not a babysitting service, parents are encouraged to stay and read or take the opportunity to wander through the store. From Meaghan’s earliest recollections she has always had a love for books and reading and despite the rapid and constant advances in technology with online books, Ipad programs and the like, Meaghan refuses to believe the tangible

For the love of books: An enchanting patch of peace & quiet, just around the corner and far reaching benefits of paper books can ever be replaced by technology. The bookshop also offers an over the phone ordering service with gift wrapped, same day delivery for busy people in the local Victoria Harbour area. If you are at a loss at what to buy for a special little someone, with limited time to get out and shop, a book is the perfect gift and Meaghan is more than happy to offer suggestions on suitable books for a variety of ages and price ranges. The Gowrie Victoria Bookshop stocks many classics as well as popular modern favourites including children’s yoga cards. The range of toys are generally locally made, fair trade certified and are thoughtfully selected. It is comforting to know that beautiful bookshops, such as this one still exist with tangible, bright and colourful books to excite and ignite children’s imaginations and to instil a lifelong love of books and learning. Pop in and visit Meaghan and see the store for yourself at 1 Seafarers Lane, Victoria Harbour (next door to the Post Office). Opening hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays 11am-6pm.

For weeks now the Easter Eggs have been staring right back at me from the supermarket shelves. They have this funny way of just popping out at you, everywhere, anywhere. And they seem to be in the stores so much sooner these days. But I have to admit… I gave into my craving for Cadbury Cream Eggs. Ordinarily I would be totally grossed out by these, but for some reason after weeks of saying no I gave in. It was a total anti climax!! I was expecting soooo much more! It was such a letdown with an extra few calories on me as well. It is that feeling of knowing you just ate something really bad for you and it was not even enjoyable. Is it our subconscious punishing us? Is it our mind ticking over and telling our pleasure hormones and taste buds not to enjoy it? I so remember enjoying that Cadbury Cream Egg last Easter.

There is just something about chocolate and it’s something I cannot say no to. There is even something more enticing about Easter Eggs. It must be the pretty foils and wrappers and perhaps childhood memories of those Easter Egg hunts. We all have a little weakness. Mine is chocolate. What is yours? The Power of Equity Income Investments… By Andrew Hewison Over the past couple of years there has been a trend toward fixed interest investment fed by the collateral damage caused to investors by the GFC and the fear factor emanating from Europe. These factors, together with the political unrest in Australia and uncertainty surrounding the knock-on effect of the carbon tax, have forced investors to abandon equity investment and a flight to cash-based investments mainly with banks. There are currently record levels of savings and fixed interest investment amounting to around $2 trillion. Industry sources suggest that unusual levels of cash are being held by investment platforms and there has been a net outflow of funds from managed equity funds. Of course it goes without saying that a properly designed asset allocation should underpin any good investment strategy. However, the failure to recognise the power of equities as an effective inflation-proof income strategy has caused investors to lose

sight of the short term benefits of having a long term investment strategy: income!

long term investment strategies into short term speculation – big mistake!

We have seen interest rates fall though in 2008/09, then rise again in 2010/11, then start to fall again. It is likely that we will see further interest rate decreases in the near future which could render fixed interest rate returns at little more than inflation. This is a massive problem for investors who fail to understand that whilst their fixed interest investments may retain their face value, they lose their buying power by the rate of inflation every year, so that they are actually losing money.

What many investors often don’t realise is the difference between investment risk and market risk. Investment risk relates to the individual investment, and market risk relates to the overall market reacting to external forces like the Europe debt situation. Market risk does not directly indicate a specific risk relative to a particular share, nor does it relate to the ability of that share to continue to pay dividends.

Whilst admittedly, it has been a horrible time for equity investors in respect to the perceived market value of their investments, they have actually done very nicely in respect to income particularly if they had been faithfully re-balancing their portfolios and buying extremely attractive dividend income streams through quality shares. Short-termism is the biggest mistake investors can make as it converts intelligent,

The most graphic example of market mispricing during the GFC was Australian banks which were marked down 50% by the market in 2009. However, bank profits were only really affected by doubtful debt provisions and their dividends marginally reduced, now they have quickly returned to record profits and dividend rates restored to a higher level than pre GFC.

Irish Australian Chamber of Commerce adds value to members’ careers. Recently the Irish Australian Chamber of Commerce (IACC) launched its inaugural Mentoring Program. IACC Board member, Sinead Cullen advised that the IACC is very pleased with the level of interest the 16

program has attracted with many very senior business people agreeing to come onboard.

• To provide value to current IACC members beyond networking events

Sinead added that the IACC is fully committed to adding value to its members and their careers and outlined the goals of the Program:

• To develop intergenerational bond between members and to create an expectation that each working generation will assist those professionals that come after them

• To allow younger Irish and Irish Australian professionals and entrepreneurs to learn and receive guidance from experienced businesspeople

Thanks to the generosity of IACC’s event partners, ANZ, the launch event took place in the stunning Executive Suites at 100 Queen Street, courtesy of Shane Buggle, Deputy Chief Financial Officer, at ANZ.

• To provide a mechanism for experienced Irish Australian professionals to share their wisdom and experience with those who are at an earlier point in their careers • To assist with the development of future Irish Australian business leaders

To start the Program in the best possible way, the IACC was fortunate to have arranged an incisive and entertaining presentation from Andrew Douglas, Chairman of Awards Victoria. Andrew is an outstanding orator and a passionate

advocate for personal development, Mentors and Mentees were offered plenty food for thought and were encouraged to embrace this exciting opportunity. The participant pairs found the semi-social environment of the launch night really set the tone for the coming year. Sinead advised that the IACC is encouraged with the success of the Program so far, with expressions of interest for next year’s Program already being submitted. Late payment of invoices hurts short-term cash flow, which in turn harms your business’ ability to grow – or sometimes even survive. If your customers are not paying your invoices (or are paying them late), it is time to take action to restore mutual respect. Here’s how to deal with the top 5 excuses for late payment:

Excuse #1: “The job isn’t finished” Most terms of trade allow for progressive invoicing, which is important in industries where the jobs are large and ongoing. Unless you have agreed otherwise, you are within your rights to invoice on a progressive basis. Explain to your customer that without the cash flow from the progressive invoices, you cannot sustain work on their job.

Excuse #2: “I haven’t received the invoice” This can be resolved easily – send a fresh copy of the invoice, and call them a couple of days later to ensure that they received it. You should also confirm their preferred delivery method for future invoices so that this excuse cannot be used again.

Excuse #4: “We don’t have the money to pay you at the moment” Your customers’ cash flow issues are not your responsibility, but they are your problem. Offer to put a payment plan in place where the customer pays affordable, regular instalments – and insist on a first payment straight-away. Do not supply more goods or services before they have made good.

Excuse #5: “We will pay in a lump sum” Some customers will want to pay a few months’ invoices at once. If you are willing to allow this, make sure individual invoices do not get overlooked. Otherwise, try to reach a compromise by reducing the frequency of your invoices, or offer for them to pay a lump sum upfront which you then credit against each subsequent invoice.

Louise Craven - Andreyev Doman Lawyers P: 1300 654 590 W: www.adlaw.com.au

Excuse #3: “The money isn’t due yet” Either your customer genuinely does not understand your payment terms, or your customer is trying to delay payment. If your customer does not understand your payment terms, review and simplify them. If your customer is just trying to delay payment, stress that you may impose interest on money owed.

From Small Business

to Big Business By Mia Robinson and Collette Beck.

Kristine Daw It is looking more and more likely that Australia has not escaped the long arm of the Global Financial Crisis. In 2008/2009 business and governments were quietly confident that Australia was

safe from the ‘boom and bust’ that had hit much of the western world. While our house prices increased, employment remained steady, as did consumer confidence. Various government incentives meant that things in Australia were ticking over nicely. But things have changed. Among other things, we learned that our stock market is not bullet proof and unemployment is on the increase (up by point one of a percentage to 5.3 per cent). Australia can no longer rest on its laurels. One thing that business owners and operators can do in an effort to protect their business is seek help from professionals. Kristine Daw is the founder of Dawtek, an independent tender and business writing company that has been operating for eight years. Dawtek was born when Kristine identified a need in the corporate market for elite tender writing services and business documentation. The company has grown from a one-womanband to a small team of professionals, who now write more than 100 tenders per year. Results are impressive, with more than 70% of tenders being shortlisted. In increasingly uncertain times, Dawtek have found that business owners and operators are less inclined

to risk not getting it right. They are handing their tender writing over to the experts; there is too much at stake and the competition is fierce. Whilst this type of writing requires a businessminded, analytical approach, Dawtek is driven primarily by Kristine’s passion for helping other businesses succeed. The thrill of this is even more pronounced in these tougher times. As a small business owner herself, knowing that she can use her skills to help other companies grow against the odds in this current climate, is what gives Dawtek its heartbeat. Having experienced the challenges of setting up her business, and wanting to help others doing the same, in 2010 Kristine launched Dawtek Online – an online store with more than 300 templates in the categories of: Workplace Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Human Resources, Information Technology, Business and Marketing, Finance and Tenders and Proposals. Dawtek Online provides a low-cost resource to help small to medium sized businesses get on their feet whilst providing them with excellent foundations. The policies, procedures, manuals, reports, plans and forms that make up its constituent parts give companies structure for growth. Dawtek Online is also designed to be a resource for those companies that don’t require a formal tender consulting process, but may just need specific documents to get the job done.

Again, identifying a need in the market, and using her extensive knowledge of the tendering process, Kristine has created another way to help businesses get ahead. Dawtek’sTender Training can be delivered to a marketing team, in their workplace at a time that suits them. The practical and hands-on tender course is designed to enable companies to prepare a winning tender submission with a professional edge over their competitors. The training is unique in that it provides practical advice and examples and it can be customised for a specific business. Dawtek’s support does not end with the course and clients walk away with free templates and ongoing support. For Kristine, it’s all about providing support for small businesses and helping them achieve a more prominent position in the marketplace. Small businesses are such a crucial element in the Australian economy and are increasingly at risk in uncertain times. Providing a service that makes a meaningful, quantifiable difference to other business entrepreneurs is at the core of Dawtek’s business. At the end of the day, Kristine and her team recognise that in these lean times, making a difference to the bottom line is what counts. Dawtek is a Docklands based company. By Tom Elliott Although the Liberal state government led by Ted Baillieu and the Labor Federal government led by Julia Gillard don’t have a lot in common, one goal they share is to restore their respective budgets to surplus next financial year. Both claim this goal as a hallmark of fiscal responsibility, yet given the state and national economies are slowing, a case can be made for more public spending and less of the economic hair shirt. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, economist John Maynard Keynes criticised the then governmental response of budget tightening for making the world’s financial problems even worse. Keynes argued that

during such times of severely reduced private demand, governments should stimulate the economy by borrowing and spending more money to keep people employed. He even went to so far as to argue that during severe recessions it would make sense for governments to pay one group of men to walk along and dig holes, while another group followed behind filling them up! During the recent near recession (for Australia, at least – the rest of the Western world did suffer a contraction in economic activity), the then Rudd government claimed to have stimulated spending via several spending programmes. These included the means tested $900 bonus, the so-called ‘Building the Education Revolution (BER)’ and the now infamous pink batts insulation scheme. We’ll never know whether the Australian economy would have suffered a recession in the absence of these schemes, but it’s clear in hindsight that PM Rudd had read some of Keynes’s textbooks regarding public expenditure.

Returning to the present, however, it seems that both federal and state governments seem determined to pursue budget surpluses ahead of other goals. In the last few weeks, various economic statistics have pointed to an imminent slowing of the Australian economy. December quarter GDP growth was an anaemic 0.4%, while unemployment in the Southern States of SA, Victoria and Tasmania appears to be on the rise. Groups as diverse as retailers and real estate agents report that consumers are keeping their hands resolutely in their pockets, yet our most important levels of government seem determined to cut spending and increase taxes. Although the BER and pink batts schemes were well intentioned, we know now that much of the money spent was wasted, a fact seized upon by a resurgent federal opposition. Fear of repeating such mistakes has probably stopped the PM from dreaming up a new scheme to stimulate demand.

And at the state level, I get the impression that as much as he might like to try and lift the level of demand in the Victorian economy, Premier Baillieu rightly worries how any resultant debt would be repaid. Keynes always assumed in his economic theories that there was no practical limit to the amount sovereign governments could borrow – an assumption Greece’s recent problems have well and truly disproved.

Do Budget Surpluses Make Sense Right Now?

In my view, the correct middle course right now for both the state and federal governments is to lift borrowing and spending – but make sure the money goes towards improving productive long term infrastructure (eg roads, public transport and education) rather than the purchase of new flat screen TVs from JB Hifi and Harvey Norman. Who Are You - Really?

teenager some 30 years earlier, and although he is now married with teenage children, and years of business experience, he was still seen this way by his family.

By Nicole Hutcheson - Kinesiology Practitioner & Instructor

Smart one, a Pretty One, a Sporty, Naughty, Sensitive, Shy, Black Sheep, or Responsible One. Have a think back to your childhood family. What was your label? The next thing to consider is- do you still carry it around with you, and if so does it limit you?

During our session we were able to diffuse and once we had “removed” these labels or Self Concepts from these siblings, the answer was obvious. The business was his and my client was free of the responsibility she had imposed on herself.

Recently I had a client who was feeling very overwhelmed at the prospect of taking over her family business. She didn’t want to and was feeling trapped. When I asked her why she was doing it, her answer was “I have to. I’m the responsible one”. Her Self Concept of being the Responsible One was so strong, it was over- riding her feelings, choices and intuition. Her adult brother- who actually wanted to take over the business wasn’t a contender because he was the Unreliable One.

What you think is true about yourself, is really the truth you create for yourself.

We often put a lot of thought into our imagehow other people see us. The way we dress, the car we drive, and the friends we chose often reflect this image of ourselves. As we grow older and move through our different life stages, we can easily change, adapt and upgrade this image; buy a new style of clothes, take up new hobbies and mix with different people. The hippy teenager becomes a corporate business woman. The broke university student becomes a successful business owner. It’s a natural progression to leave behind the old and embrace the new. But how often do we take a look at our Self Concept- that is who we truly are. How we see ourselves? Often we have been given a role or a label in early childhood. Most families have a

Dusty Wygle - Nitro Circus Live By Lisa Quittner The action sports touring sensation, Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus Live, returns to Australia following record breaking tours throughout Australia and New Zealand as well as a sold out show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In May, Melbourne audiences have the chance to see the biggest action sports stars in the world as they join the famous Nitro crew to unleash their mind blowing stunts and crazy antics spurred on by the crowd. Not only will all of the stars be performing the biggest tricks in their chosen disciplines, they will also be pushing their limits and skill on a range of crazy contraptions on the Nitro Gigant-a-Ramp. 3008Docklands spoke to America’s Dusty Wygle – Nitro star and land bodyboard extraordinaire about the upcoming Australian tour.

were you the type of kid that would just lunge off rooftops in a bid to fly? I was definitely a rowdy little kid. I was very acrobatic, loved Moto-X and extreme sports, so all of my energy was channelled into that. A friend introduced me to the Nitro crew at a pit-bike race in Las Vegas when I was 19. I got the chance to do a half time show with them. We went crazy. It was super fun. I have been playing with them ever since then, it’s pretty amazing how it all worked out.

Self Concepts can be limiting, and can stop us from achieving what we really want to do in our life. Have you wanted to do some further study, but stopped yourself because you’re “not a good student”? A label you picked up decades earlier in high school? Think about it- how have you always described yourself? Now ask “is this really still true about me?” You may find that along with other parts in your life, you have grown out of your Self Concept and it’s time to update it. recently I’ve tried road-cycling. I am not a big fan of going to the gym, I feel caged up in there. But if my friends prod me to go I will join them in the gym on occasion. Stairs are also good and running up the Giganta-a-Ramp is brutal.

What is your all time favourite maneuver that you have done or watched someone else do? Bilko’s “Cliffhumpers” are fun to watch. Bob Burnquist did a “Christ air back flip” at our show in Vegas -it was unreal as well as anything that Wheelz or Special Greg do.

What are your memories of Australia and are you looking forward to returning?

I pray for everyone’s safety and that we have a blast performing. Then I dive headfirst off the top of the “Gigant-aRamp” roll-in for my intro to the show.

Australia is one of my favorite places to visit. I have been there four times already and had the chance to see a different side of it each time. I went beach camping at Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay -two of the greatest places on this planet. I can’t wait to visit again.

How do you prepare physically and mentally leading up to a show?

Can you give us some inside information about the upcoming Oz Shows?

Staying active year-round is huge for me, I am a very active person by nature. During the week I surf, ride dirt bikes, BMX, skate and

THIS WINTER

Well we are about to hit that time of the year where exercise and staying ‘fit’ are furthest from our minds. The beach season is past us and our bodies are getting rugged up and hidden away behind our fashionable winter kit and we don’t have to worry about anything until September right? Wrong. Everyone, things will be a little easier on yourself every summer season and every winter if you managed to exercise all year round, none of this yo-yo’ing of work load in your training. It is ok to ‘take a break’ from your training, that being no more that 14 days, but to take the winter months off is just asking for trouble and making the task of getting fit and healthy for the summer so much harder.

What can I do in these cold and dark times of the year, I hear you ask. It is not that hard, there are heated pools to head to, you can get out on your bike in the dry days, same with the running and walking. Train at lunch time when there is light. If you can’t get motivated on your own, get a couple of friends together and start up a lunch time exercise group. Make it fun. Don’t make it a chore - it is going to be hard enough to get going in the cold weather. Having a couple of friends there to help get you going will mean when one of you wants to bail your friends will stop you from missing the ‘session’.

The other thing that will help you out is watching what you eat. At this time of the year we tend to over eat as we get less active and food is a great way to get and stay warm. So, most importantly do not over eat. Eat 5 to 6 times a day, keeping with small portion sizes and eating the right food types. This won’t happen at every meal or everyday but it is important to get it right more often than not as you want to give yourself a chance to keep yourself (at worst) in the same shape as you currently are.

So, just remember over the next few months of cold and wet, there is always something you can be doing to keep yourself in shape.

If you have been inactive for more than three months or have an existing medical condition always check with your doctor before commencing an exercise program.

There is no reason for you to totally pack in the runners, put away the bathers, or stop playing your sports - use the indoor options or you will just be making things so much harder when summer starts to roll around again and you have to get the gear off once again.

Running into Trouble By Josh Lambert - Physiotherapist

More than ever, Melbournians are pounding the pavements and choosing running as their preferred form of exercise. Heading off for a run by the beach, park or local trail is now as recognisable a part of the Melbourne cultural psyche and routine as sipping a Latte on the tram into work. The reasons for this are clear cut running has the obvious benefits of increasing cardiovascular fitness, improving circulation, reducing stress,

increasing bone density, lowering body fat percentage, and reducing the risk of lifestyle diseases like stroke and heart attack. It is one of the most practical, timeefficient forms of exercise; is easily accessible, inexpensive, and caters to all levels of ability or fitness. When commencing running, or returning from a prolonged break, many of us will encounter musculoskeletal stress injuries that can slow progress, prevent improvement, or force us to stop running altogether – leading to frustration, disappointment and failure in reaching our fitness goals.

Of the many runningrelated injuries, the most commonly experienced are:

• F ree beginners lessons – four times per day - where you can learn the basics of ice skating to feel confident on the ice • Free demonstrations - by figure skaters • Ice Ambassadors - will be on hand to help visitors improve their ice skating skills Take advantage of all day unlimited skating these school holidays and a fabulous family offer (two adults & two children), which includes skate hire, unlimited skating, entry and unlimited rides at Wonderland Fun Park plus discounts at Harbour Town for just $100! The fun and festivities will run until Sunday 15 April. For more information please visit www.icehouse.com.au

Knee Pain: Patellofemoral syndrome, or “Runner’s Knee” is characterized by pain under the knee cap (patella) and around the front of the knee. It affects as many as 1 in 4 people, and is caused by irritation of the patella and surrounding structures (including the Iliotibial Band on the outside of the knee) during running. Tightness in the Iliotibial Band is a major cause, as it pulls the patella outwards and leads to poor alignment. Shin Splints: pain caused by overuse of the muscles down the front of the shin which lift the foot, and control movement when the foot contacts to the ground. This can cause inflammation in the muscles, the surrounding sheath, and the bone to which it attaches. The pain may build up during running and will become more severe the longer you run. Achilles Tendinopathy: pain due to small tears in the tendon above the heel that develop over time, becoming worn and damaged through overuse. Symptoms include tenderness between the calf and heel (possibly with mild swelling on the Achilles tendon) and pain and stiffness in the morning that improves with mild activity. Plantar Fasciitis: characterised by damage and inflammation to the plantar fascia, the connective tissue on the sole of the foot forming the inner arch. Pain is usually felt at the attachment of the plantar fascia to the heel bone, caused by overstretching of the fascia due to overactivity, poor foot mechanics, or poor footwear. The key to preventing such overuse injuries is to gradually ease into running, and listen to your body. Ensure that you warm up adequately, are wearing suitable footwear, progress your distance gradually and appropriately - and if you experience pain in any area, use the RICE principle (Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate the leg for the first 48 hours).

These basics aside, all of the above running injuries occur due to repetitive strain on the structure involved, and in most cases, the causes of the repetitive strain can be identified and corrected to prevent reoccurrence. As physiotherapists, we will often tell patients that whilst the painful area can be quite small and very specific, the problem is usually being caused by issues above or below in the movement chain, leading to poor biomechanics, and increasing the stress on the specific area.

These issues include: • Inadequate core stability • Muscular imbalance around the hips, gluteals, and thighs • Overactive or tight structures of the lower limb • Poor flexibility • Over-pronation of the feet (flat feet) • Inappropriate footwear (lacking arch support) These factors can be addressed by your physiotherapist, who will closely analyse your gait and running mechanics, and establish the postural causes to your impairment. Through treating these causes, and providing specific exercises to improve and maintain alignment, gradual return to running can take place. So whether you’re setting your sights on a brisk event like the Bolte Bolt, training at dawn in preparation for the Melbourne Marathon, or a weekend plodder at your local track, remember that considering these important aspects may be the difference between frustration and elation with every step. 3008 WELLBEING

3008’s Bookshelf Book Review by Rebecca Howden

‘Animal People’ by Charlotte Wood As an animal person, it’s hard to really understand those who are not animal people. Stephen, who is most decidedly not an animal person, has the opposite dilemma. “He was not an animal person in the same way he was not a musical person, or an intellectual person,” Charlotte Wood writes. “Not to be musical or intellectual was unremarkable and provoked no suspicion. But not to be an animal person somehow meant he wasn’t fully human.” This sense of being not quite human, not quite grown up, not quite living properly, saturates the whole novel, which stretches over the expanse of a single day in Stephen’s life. It’s a fairly ordinary day, but long, sweltering, exhausting. Stephen drifts through his normal routine, mindlessly working at the zoo kiosk with the same complacency as always. The familiarity of it – talking to his mother on the phone about a new TV she wants to buy, having to endure a tedious teambuilding activity at work – makes time lag, and the more disturbing events that punctuate the day slowly build up a feeling of weariness and defeat, growing like the residue of grime and sweat on his skin. There’s one thing in particular that keeps weighing Stephen down - he’s planning to break up with his girlfriend Fiona that night, right after her daughter’s birthday party. He can’t say why, exactly - Stephen doesn’t understand his own feelings and

motivations any more than he understands animal people. In fact, Fiona and her two young daughters are probably the best thing that has ever happened to him. Throughout the passage of his day Wood allows us glimpses into their relationship in mini-flashbacks, and his more intimate thoughts are rendered beautifully: “For the first time in his life he found himself wanting to live up to something – to meet her, to take this beautiful risk – and it made the wave of his need for her crest and break again.”

Stay Peachy at The People’s Market On a warm and sunny Saturday, visitors to Melbourne’s newest market at Docklands, Melbourne People’s Market, enjoyed an array of new and pre-loved goods, fresh produce, delectable, cooked on the spot foods from a range of gastronomic stalls serving everything from a spring roll, Bratwurst or should we say, Phatwurst with home style made chips, to a Turkish cheese and spinach pastry. Coffee to go, Dutch pancakes and a refreshing ale or stronger, if you so desire. Oh, and a roaming Elmo from Sesame Street!

Still, he is oppressed by a feeling that breaking up with her is just something he must do, almost if it’s beyond his control. Stephen is a guy who, as his sister chastises him, “prefers his life forms behind bars or glass,” just like the animals at the zoo, so that he doesn’t have to get too close. He doesn’t want to be needed. He reflects on the way visitors at the zoo always want to believe the animals are noticing them. “Surely the most appealing thing about animals,” he thinks, “was that - far from offering unconditional love - they wanted nothing from you.” Stephen is frustrating and kind of dull, but ultimately we are invited to sympathise with him, and it’s clear that there’s more to him simmering beneath what we’re shown. Wood carefully layers the novel with levels of meaning and makes astute observations about social dynamics, and the preoccupation with the relationship between people and animals is woven unobtrusively throughout the narrative. This is a book you can easily read in one or two sittings, but the full complexity of it is far richer than it may at first appear.
