MODERNISM WEEK 2022 Modernism Week is the largest celebration of midcentury and modern architecture, design, and culture. It started out as a collaborative, grass-roots community effort comprised of a few home tours, cocktail mixers and educational events that were planned to coincide with the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale occurring in Palm Springs, CA each February since 2000. Modernism Week’s signature February festival will take place February 17 – 27, 2022, highlighting midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area of Southern California. This year will feature a wide array of events including the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale, tours of iconic homes in more than 30 neighborhoods, and the popular Signature Home Tour on both weekends. Also offered are architectural walking, biking and double-decker bus tours, tours of the historic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands, a classic car show, garden tours, nightly parties, and a special series of compelling and informative talks. All events are open to the public.

WEXLER STEEL HOUSE BY JIM RICHE

BACKGROUND In 2005, following the success of both the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale and the annual symposium organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Council, a group of local design and architecture aficionados created a committee to produce Modernism Week’s first event in February 2006 to showcase the world-renowned midcentury modern architecture of Palm Springs. Among the members of the initial steering committee were representatives from the Modernism Show & Sale, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, the Palm Springs Modern Committee, the Palm Springs Historical Society, and the Palm Springs Art Museum. The first weekend included only a few hundred participants who attended five events including the symposium, a few lectures, and a reception. Each year the demand for additional programing increased and the founding partner organizations expanded their offerings. By 2009, programming was offered on two weekends. Eventually midweek programming was introduced, and the event continued to grow progressively in scope and attendance until it reached its current schedule of 11 days and hundreds of events. Tickets for Modernism Week events have been selling quickly since they became available on November 1. Tickets for all Modernism Week events are available at www.modernismweek.com. FRENCH ENTREPRENEUR ALICE DEROCK MAKES HER SEX-TOY EMPIRE MORE INCLUSIVE BY MONA ELYAFI

Sex toys are typically designed for cisgender men and women. But Trans*, NB, intersex and/or GNC folks can sometimes have a difficult relationship with sex toys as very few designers produce toys specifically geared toward their bodies. Until now. French entrepreneur Alice Derock expands her sex-toy empire “W.F.H.” to now include Trans, Nb, Intersex and GNC individuals. While in the past Derock (under her WFH marquee) has focused on being a sex toy company “by women, for women,” her mission has shifted to where it should have been all along - by us, for us. A brand created by queer people for queer people. Indeed, Wet for Her beginnings started off with an intention to change how queer women and queer people were represented in the sex toy industry. 12 years ago, Wet for Her CEO Alice Derock was shopping for her and her partner and was let down by the selection of products marketed to her. There was of course a variety of pleasure products for women, but there were not many aimed at queer women. Unsatisfied with the lack of consistency and quality of toys for lesbian women and queer people, Alice took matters into her own hands and revolutionized the sex toy industry by crafting somewhere the queer community could take up space. Wet for Her has grown exponentially since then and is constantly shifting to meet the needs of the community. As the brand is expanding, Derock is not interested in bringing toys that will simply “have to work,” she’s laser-focused on offering toys that are made FOR every member of our LGBTQIA+ community.

16 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Along with much of society, the vast majority of sex toy companies carry the delusion that there are not only just two genders, but also that there are only two types of bodies: those with vaginas, and those with penises. Whether it be in representation or in toy offerings, it is no surprise that when it comes to sex toys, the trans*, NB, intersex and/or GNC folks in our community are constantly overlooked.

Trans*, NB, intersex and/or GNC folks often find themselves having to be much more creative with toys than others. Sometimes that means it can be awkward or just not quite right. Because there are not a lot of options for toys catered to those outside of binary ideas about gender and bodies, they are cornered into thinking outside the box or ignoring the parts about the toy that aren’t for them. Sometimes they will find themselves settling for something that’s not great or makes them feel dysphoric, while others have thousands and thousands of options. Every single person that is sexual should be able to feel empowered and affirmed when they use toys, whether they’re alone or with others. As a toy company founded by and for the LGBTQI+ community, Derock is focusing her attention where it needs to be by expanding WFH’s offerings to include products for and by the trans*, NB, intersex and/or GNC community. There is no argument that trans*, NB, IS and/or GNC people know what they need the most, which is why Derock is working on this collection with trans* sex toy professionals and consulting through the community to create beautiful, sexy, empowering products. She will also be assisting her trans*, NB, IS and/or GNC teammates in this project to support production, marketing, etc. Wet For Her products are intentionally made to be neutral toned, with 100% medical grade silicone, and gender-inclusive. BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER Her lips are locked tight. Your best friend knows all your secrets, and she’s keeping them; you told her things you had to tell somebody, and she’s telling nobody. You always knew you could trust her; if you couldn’t, she wouldn’t be your BFF. But as in the new book “Capote’s Women” by Laurence Leamer, what kind of a friend are you? For months, Truman Capote had been promising a blockbuster. Following his success with Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood, he was “one of the most famous authors in the world” but he needed a career-booster. The novel he was writing, he teased, would be about “his swans,” seven wealthy, fashionable women who quite personified “beauty, taste, and manners.” His first swan was Barbara “Babe” Paley, whom he’d met on a trip with the David Selznicks to Jamaica. For Capote, “Babe was the epitome of class,” simply “perfect” in every way; it helped that the famously gay writer was no threat to Paley’s “madly jealous” husband. Babe’s “dearest friend” was Nancy “Slim” Keith, who quickly learned that if a lady wanted her confidences kept, she didn’t tell Capote anything. She shouldn’t have trusted Babe, either: When Slim left for a European trip, Babe asked if Slim’s husband could accompany Babe’s friend, Pamela Hayward, to a play. Slim was aware of Pamela’s predatory reputation, but what could she say? Of course, Pamela, another of Truman’s swans, stole Slim’s man, a scandal that Capote loved. Gloria Guinness was highly intelligent, possibly enough to be a spy in Nazi Germany. Lucy “C.Z.” Guest was an upper-crust “elitist” with a “magical aura.” Marella Agnelli “was born an Italian princess”; Lee Radziwill, of course, was Jacqueline Kennedy’s sister. Through the late 1960s, Capote claimed to be writing his masterpiece, his tour de force based on his swans, but several deadlines passed for it. He was sure Answered Prayers “would turn him once again into the most talked-about author in America.” Instead, when an excerpt from it was published, his swans got very ruffled feathers. Every time you stand in line for groceries, the tabloids scream at you with so much drama that you either love it or hate it. Or, in the case of “Capote’s Women,” you cultivate it. And that’s infinitely fun, as told by author Laurence Leamer. Happily, though, Leamer doesn’t embellish or disrespect these women or Capote; he tells their tales in order, gently allowing readers’ heads to spin with the wild, globe-hopping goings-on but

not to the point that it’s overdone. While most of this book is about these seven beautiful, wealthy, and serially married women – the Kardashians of their time, if you will – Capote is Leamer’s glue, and Truman gets his due, as well. Readers who devour this book will be sure that the writer would’ve been very happy about that. “Capote’s Women” should be like catnip to celeb-watchers of a Certain Age but even if you’re not, find it. If you’re a Hollywood fan, you’ll want to get a lock on it. “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for An Era” by Laurence Leamer c.2021, Putnam $28.00 / $37.00 Canada. 356 pages

DAP HEALTH ROLLS OUT HARM REDUCTION PROGRAM BY STEVEN HENKE This Spring, DAP Health will unveil its harm reduction program that will have two components. First, Overdose prevention and secondly a Syringe Services Program (SSP) that will include health services and behavioral health support to combat the rise in preventable overdoses and the increase in new HIV cases. The multi-layered program will focus on education for the community, HIV and Hepatitis C testing, distribution and collection of syringes and referrals to support folks through their addiction journey. Additional services to be provided: Naloxone/Narcan to reverse overdose and prevent death, and Fentanyl test strips for testing drugs before use to decrease likelihood of overdose. In the latest preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 100,000 people in the U.S. died from overdoses during the 12-month period from April 2020 through April 2021. (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/drug-overdose-data.htm) In Riverside County, there has been an 800 percent increase in fentanyl-related deaths since 2016, according to Rivco.org. (https://www.rivco.org/news/riverside-county-committee-combatfentanyl-abuse). Palm Springs has an overdose death rate 300 percent higher than the state average. Palm Springs Police Department Chief Andy Mills was able to review the harm reduction program and was impressed with how complete it is. “It’s important to remember the dynamics that go into a program like this,” Mills says. “That’s what excites me. Not only is DAP Health looking at helping people, but genuinely helping people so they are not destructive to themselves or our community.” DAP Health is only the second state certified Syringe Services Program (SSP) in Riverside County, which is the 10th most populated county in the United States.

Because of the rising numbers, Secretary of Health and Human Services, Xavier Bacerra says the federal government supports harm reduction, which includes direct support and care to people who actively struggle with substance misuse. “DAP Health will begin deepening our relationship with people living with addiction by adding a harm reduction approach to our first-aid kit of solutions,” says C.J. Tobe, the Director of Community Health and Sexual Wellness. “We will do this without stigma or judgment because you cannot treat someone who does not trust you. Harm reduction is an important tactic in DAP Health’s ongoing work to end the HIV epidemic. Work that begins with meeting folks where they are.” Education Overdose prevention Safer injecting Risk reduction counseling Education to community partners Testing Free HIV/HCV testing Fentanyl strips for testing drugs before use to decrease likelihood of overdose Equipment Naloxone/Narcan to reverse overdose and prevent death Phone number and email to DAP Health for the community to report used syringes that need to be picked up and disposed of, or to request education related to harm reduction strategies at HarmReduction@DAPHealth.org or 760 992-0453.

MOVE, I’M GAY PODCAST CELEBRATES 100TH EPISODE BY MIKE BAHR

Move, I’m Gay, the podcast starring Francisco and Brendan (better known to listeners as Franny and Brenda) will premiere its 100th episode on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Taped live each week from their studio in Portland, Oregon, the show has gained a national following for the comical camaraderie between its two seemingly polar-opposite hosts. While Franny dishes on the latest entertainment dirt, and maybe belts out a Top 40 hit or two, Brenda references obscure gay historical facts. There’s also a bit of politics thrown in, as the two banter, laugh, and drink their way into listener’s hearts. “I had never been a fan of podcasts,” admits Francisco. “I have

30 THESTANDARDPS.COM

only listened to a couple and most of them have been true crime, so it’s interesting to find myself hosting a comedy show. Honestly, the real reason I’m here is I broke my leg and I needed something to do with my life.” The pair had only hung out with each other casually before starting the Move, I’m Gay podcast in February 2020. “We have very different personalities,” Brendan explains. “Francisco is up on trends and I’m slightly clueless to them, but we seem to mesh well in terms of our interaction and it’s nice to have solidified our friendship through two years of weekly recordings.”

The show’s segments are a favorite among listeners. In the “Gay of the Day” segment, they highlight some of the outstanding accomplishments of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. “We love heaping praise on the bravery of celebs like Lil’ Nas X and JoJo Siwa who have come out loud and proud and others like Jeopardy! champ Amy Schneider who are raising LGBTQ+ awareness on unexpected platforms,” says Francisco. “It’s also encouraging to be able to report on progressive legal news, especially the expanded rights being enjoyed by queer people all around the world,” Brendan adds. But with the sugar comes the medicine. The pair regularly share their real-life trials and tribulations, like in the “Hog Hunters” episode when Brenda was forced to come to terms with the truth about the man he had been speaking with on Tinder. “I had to be convinced live during the episode that I was being catfished. All of the obvious signs were there but I simply wasn’t willing to admit it.” In their “Bless This Mess” segment, Franny and Brenda lament on the week’s most shameful events. “Some of our most heated shows from last year were centered around transphobia and the right’s increasingly unhinged fight against BLM and voter’s rights, and their

refusal to believe that we’re in the middle of a God damned global pandemic,” says Francisco. “In the beginning, we didn’t expect the Move, I’m Gay podcast to be so political,” he continues. “It was meant to be more about our shared love of the free Britney movement and detest for Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop with maybe a few bits about Wendy Williams burping and farting simultaneously while live on air tossed in for good measure.” Both agree that being LGBTQ+ today is inherently political. “We realized pretty quickly that avoiding the serious topics would come across as tone deaf, and that’s the last thing we want the show to be,” Brendan explains. The podcast has been a learning experience for the pair. “I’ve found that my favorite shows are when we’re our real selves, imperfections and all,” says Francisco. Brendan agrees. “Being authentic seems to be working for us. Like the great Cheryl Lynn sang in her 1978 self-titled debut studio album, ‘Got to Be Real’.” Listen to the Move I’m Gay podcast on Spotify. Follow on Instagram.

BYRON JAMAL: THE LOVE GURU HELPING ORDINARY PEOPLE FIND EXTRAORDINARY LOVE BY TOM TIETJEN

How To Heal A Hoe, A Loving Self-Healing Approach to Sexual Stigma, Shame and Trauma “Sex is natural and an integral part of adult life,” says Byron Jamal, the former pastor turned Love Guru. And author. “However, despite sharing it with lovers, partners, and even strangers, many of us feel uncomfortable discussing sex.” When Mr. Jamal recognized how his own sexual hang-ups were harming people around him and himself, he decided to dig deeper into its source. He confronted his sexual shame, the trauma from his past, and the stigma he was carrying, and decided to abandon conventional views on sex and sexuality and develop his own approach to sex. In How To Heal A Hoe, the Love Guru combines the spiritual principles he preached as a pastor with the practical everyday techniques he uses today in his practice as a Love Guru. He coaches men and women — single, married, and of all sexual orientations — on how to overcome their perceived “hoe-ness.” Programs that focus on sexual trauma healing can be exhausting and expensive. The Love Guru makes the process easier and even fun. In How To Heal A Hoe, readers learn to unlock the self-healing powers they didn’t know they had. Some of the topics include: *

Overcoming the stigma, shame, and trauma of one’s past.

*

Expanding the range of one’s emotional intimacy.

*

Owning one’s journey through a self-healing approach.

*

Transforming oneself into their best version.

*

Ditching destructive sexual traits.

After completing Byron Jamal’s How To Heal A Hoe, readers will be able to identify their sexual vulnerabilities, pain points and find their own path to healing. They will learn to love themselves,

their bodies, and their passions, as they are as God created them to be. “Loving your inner hoe is the key to a healthy sexual love journey,” says the Love Guru. Byron Jamal is the founder of the Extraordinary Love Academy and Beloved Community, which serves thousands of diverse men and women through live seminars and digital programs. As a bisexual love healer, Byron is able to aid all types of people regardless of their sexual orientation. He also serves as a love coach for singles and couples. HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY! BY JILL LANGHAM

Wait, maybe I should say, Happy Groundhog Year? …..Here we go again!

I feel that it is critical for me to remind you that I am merely sharing a choice I made to deal with my depression and am not using this a forum nor advocating this choice for anyone but myself.

I hope that you are all faring well. As usual, I have been on another growth and learning path. After the holiday season was behind me by a few weeks, began struggling with depression, again. People all around me were contracting the newest strain of Covid and seemed to be in quite a state of panic and dismay. I had lost three close friends and an uncle in a 4-week period around the holiday which only added to my sadness and depression. Last September, I used the therapeutic dose of mushrooms to assist me in overcoming my depression, so I decided to nip this depression in the bud before it got any worse and tried them again. I had been doing a lot of reading about mushrooms as a treatment for depression and knew that it was recommended to micro-dose after using the initial, therapeutic dose of 3 Grams. I had instead chosen to see how far the initial dose would take me and did not micro-dose.

36 THESTANDARDPS.COM

The effects of the mushrooms lasted right up until the week before Christmas when the melancholia I normally feel around the holiday time, like so many millions of other people, hit me and I again began to crash. Up until that time the mushrooms had helped me find my light and path. In mid- January, I used ½ of the therapeutic dose, or 1.5 grams and again felt the light go on. This time, I plan on using the recommended .5 gram for micro-dosing to keep the effects of the mushrooms going. In the meantime, I wanted to make sure that my metabolism stayed revved up since inactivity and sluggish metabolism goes hand-in-hand with depression. I was thankful that the mushrooms helped motivate me to not only use the treadmill but also to walk outside again. Walking outside beats the treadmill hands down and it keeps my Vitamin D levels high keeping my bones and heart healthy. It’s also a way to safely socialize while getting exercise.

I’d shared in past posts that since Covid, I have to do about 3.5 – 4 hours of exercise a day to maintain my physique, meaning I am working out close to 24-hours a week. Pre-Covid, I was lifting a total of 3-hours a week and was dancing about 12-hours in total. That’s a huge increase and not half as much fun! Yikes! At times it means that I have to work out with weights twice a day and then do 45 minutes of cardio after each session. If I missed the second cardio session, I could see and feel my waist thickening and my fluids settling in my body. It was uncanny! Working out twice a day, allowed me more time to pay attention to my form. I noticed that I was not getting a lasting pump and hadn’t for many years. I believed I was isolating each muscle I was working on, but it didn’t show so I decided to take it to another level. I found that if I focused on being inside of the main muscle I was training while intentionally allowing the secondary muscle to relax, that I experienced a much deeper pump that actually lasted longer than an hour after I left the gym. That was a big deal for me. I had seen my muscle strength, size and strength diminish over the last 12 years especially since I was no longer using any enhancement or performance drugs. But with this new technique, the pump was still there a few days later. I was both excited and more motivated to keep it going. The biggest changes I saw were in my back and bicep workouts. Do you get a pump after you train your back? How about bicep or tricep workouts? In my experience they are the hardest muscle groups in which to feel a change. Ask yourself the last time you felt sore after working those muscle groups. If you’re like me it most likely was quite awhile ago. After the first time that I tried this new technique, I could not only feel the change but could see a change in their appearance, as well. I hope that you will consider trying this technique. And here’s to your motivation. May it stay strong! Have a great Valentine’s and President’s Day and see you in March! Xoxo Jill

WARM UP WITH WHISKEY BARREL AGED WINES BY CURT HARSTON

The practice of aging wine in barrels dates back thousands of years. Romans borrowed the practice from the Gauls, who used barrels to transport beer. Winemakers soon discovered barrel aging improved the quality of wine, creating a smoother, softer taste and adding flavor. And so it went for centuries, with winemakers continuing to evolve and perfect barrel aging. More recently, winemakers landed on a new innovation, using whiskey barrels to age wine. Contrary to popular belief, these wines don’t taste like whiskey at all. Rather, whiskey barrel aging imparts smoky notes, with a faint hint of vanilla. “Whiskey barrel aging gives wine drinkers bolder, bigger flavors,” said Theo Rutherford, wine educator and sommelier for Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits. “Barrel aging adds to the natural characters of the wines being aged. If people like cabernet sauvignon because it is big and bold, age it in a whiskey barrel and it will be bigger and bolder. The main thing to think about is the base wine itself. If you like the wine before it goes into the whiskey barrel, you are more likely to like it after as well.” Whiskey barrel aging also tempers tannins, making for an easier drinking experience. Tannins are slightly mouth-drying compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems. Wines like cabernet sauvignon are naturally high in tannins, one reason they stand up well to and can benefit from whiskey barrel aging.

seasoned wine drinkers, this is a whole new category to explore that bridges a fun gap between wine and spirits. They’re also perfect drinking for the fall as the weather starts cooling down - tailgating, Halloween parties and after apple picking,” continued Rutherford. “Finally, these wines also offer some new opportunity for food pairings that people can explore and have fun with.” HERE ARE A FEW OF RUTHERFORD’S FAVORITES: All new, [yellow tail] Whiskey Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in rare Australian whiskey barrels, using a blend of French and American oak. The wine is deep garnet, with distinctly ripe characteristics. It tastes of black cherry, currant and plum, complemented with hints of spice and subtle vanilla. The wine’s soft tannins and spicy oak flavor deliver a full-bodied wine with lingering velvety finish. Josh Cellars Reserve Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for two months in bourbon barrels, imparting notes of cedar, caramel, and a subtle hint of bourbon. Aromas of dark chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and sweet burnt toffee blend harmoniously with flavors of baked black fruits and hints of barbecued meats. This wine is full-bodied with rich tannins and a lingering finish.

Wine lovers are taking notice, with whiskey barrel aged wine up over 50% in dollars and 65% in volume, much higher than total table wines, according to industry tracker IRI (December 2020).

Layer Cake Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon hails from vineyards throughout California wine country, harvesting grapes from a diversity of climates to produce a concentrated, complex wine that is bold in flavor. After traditional aging in French Oak, the wine is then aged in charred oak bourbon barrels. This gives the wine a more intense character, packed with scents of blackberry and vanilla, and a long finish complemented by a hint of sweetness.

“Whiskey barrel aged wines are a great option for new wine drinkers, who are still developing their preferences. For more

Wines are available for purchase at retailers nationwide, as well as online through Drizly, Instacart and Minibar.

HEALTH RESOLUTIONS SIMPLIFIED THANKS TO THESE EXPERT TIPS BY JOSEPH BLAISE

A new year is a time of reflection and opportunity to focus on gratitude and goals for the future. Resolutions can be anything that you desire, but with health and wellness top of mind for so many people, two of the most popular are eating healthier and getting fit. Since we are a month into the New Year and hopefully you are still abiding by the resolutions you made to yourself, here are some helpful tips to keep you on track. The problem with resolutions is that everyone starts with good intentions, but few succeed. Research shows only 8% of people actually achieve their New Year’s resolutions. If you want to be part of the successful 8%, it’s time to shift your mindset and start with small steps that are maintainable. “You can set yourself up for success by making meaningful changes and shifting your thinking,” says Colette Heimowitz, vice president, Nutrition & Education, Simply Good Foods. Heimowitz shares the following strategies to help you stick to your resolutions to eat healthier with a low-carb lifestyle and make lasting positive changes: PLAN AHEAD FOR SUCCESS Going cold turkey on low fiber/high sugar carbs and favorite treats may be a challenge if your fridge and pantry are still stuffed with leftover goodies. For a fresh start, consider organizing your kitchen, tossing out or giving away excessive unhealthy temptations, and stocking up on good-for-you foods that fuel your body. Some ideas for low-carb foods include cheese, eggs, tofu, rotisserie chicken, fresh baked ham and or turkey, frozen hamburger patties, pork chops, shrimp, and chicken breasts or thighs. In the pantry, stock canned or vacuum packs of tuna, salmon, sardines, crabmeat or clams, plus marinated artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers and jars of olives. Lots of colorful vegetables for salad fixings and cut-up vegetables are a must-have for the fridge.

40 THESTANDARDPS.COM

STICK WITH YOUR SCHEDULE Whenever possible, try to be consistent with your low-carb snacks and meals, aiming for three meals and two snacks a day. This should keep your appetite under control, even when faced with tempting treats. ENJOY A TREAT Eating well is a balance and everyone wants to enjoy a treat now and then. You can keep your goals and enjoy something sweet like the Atkins Keto Peanut Butter Cups. This decadent treat is made with real peanut butter and a delicious chocolaty coating, has 2 grams net carbs, 6 grams of fiber and less than 1 gram of sugar. If you prefer a cocktail or glass of wine, there are thoughtful low carb options from Atkins to help you stick to your goals. Certain spirits, such as scotch, vodka and gin are naturally low in carbs, just avoid mixing them with juice, tonic water, or non-diet soda. Go for seltzer, diet tonic or diet soda instead. If you’d prefer white wine, pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc are your best choices. If you’re into red, try pinot noir. ADD SOME STEPS Moving your body regularly is essential to health and wellness, but it’s not always about working out. Sometimes it’s about adjusting your days to add movement whenever possible. For example, get up every hour from your desk and sneak in some squats, sit-ups, or push-ups. Or park farther away from your destination. Take a walk during lunch or after dinner. “When you can sneak in a workout, consider popular techniques like circuit or high-intensity interval training,” said Heimowitz. “Tabata workouts, for example, are short intervals such as 20 seconds of intense, all-out work followed by a brief recovery of 10 seconds, for a total of eight rounds, with the total workout lasting about four minutes.”

JAWBREAKERS SERVE DELICIOUS NEW BEATS BY MIKE BAHR

Just A Taste, the debut EP from the drag-duo DJ-production team known as Jawbreakers, dishes out dance, pop and tech house songs suitable for clubs and partygoers at home enjoying a late-night kiki. “The EP is a sampling platter of beats with something for everyone,” says Kali Forni-Kate of Jawbreakers. “It’s Just A Taste, because there is 100% more to come,” adds her collaborator, Sabrina Babyslut. With songs like “This Is Dirty” and “Ciao Bella,” the EP reflects the group’s live DJ shows that emphasize how Jawbreakers are not only playing the party, but they are also the party. “Boyfriend,” the EP’s first release, is a modern-day remake of Ashlee Simpson’s 2005 hit that chronicled her stealing Wilmer Valderrama from Lindsay Lohan. The Jawbreaker version features vocals from Amunda (formerly from Operator Please). Its accompanying music video, directed by Nyssa Mitchell, conceptualized by Jawbreakers with editing and FX by Zachary McSweeney, is a technicolor dream, with Kali and Sabrina dressed in eye-catching lewks. The Just A Taste EP is being distributed through Extrovert Music, a division of Vicious Recordings, and will be available on Apple Music, Spotify and all digital

platforms on April 1. Jawbreaker’s “Boyfriend” music video will be available on YouTube on January 21. Kali and Sabrina first met in 2016, performing in a Britney Spears tribute show in Melbourne. They immediately clicked as both came from similar middle-class, nuclear family backgrounds, discovered drag via their passions for musical theatre, and began their individual adventures into the art form after high school. When they learned of their shared interest in music production, they decided to join forces as a DJ duo. They bought a mixer and six months later they were in business. “The biggest hurdle was deciding who stands where in the booth,” Kali explains. “Sabrina is left-handed and I’m right. We had to fight over who uses the left and right DJ decks. Swapping throws off our groove!” Their Jawbreakers name harkens back to the iconic candy from

their childhoods and the 1998 teen film that starred Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart and Julie Benz as the “it” girl clique who reign supreme in their high school. “It’s a reflection on how the drag that we do is heavily inspired by pop culture,” Kali continues. “Like the girls in the movie, we dress to have fun and through the music we play and the energy that we exude, it makes everyone want to party with us!”

Avenue, had a #1 dance anthem with “Don’t Call Me Baby”. More recently, Sgt Slick’s recut of “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” went gold and has become a major queer anthem. “Extrovert Music is focusing on dance pop/disco/commercial/cross over releases,” Platt continues. “A majority of our new signings and existing roster who identify as LGBTQIA+ are producing this sound.”

The duo has already headlined several international festivals including Sydney Mardi Gras and Milkshake Festival in Netherlands. Their next big gig will be Summer Camp Festival where they will perform alongside Years and Years, Big Freedia and The Veronicas. They are also slated to perform the next Goodlife U18 event, as well as Adelaide Festival, St Kilda Festival and Melbourne Pride.

While Jawbreakers’ unique look has helped attract attention to their work, Sabrina admits that performing as hyper feminine drag artists has made it harder for fans and the music industry to take the duo seriously. “We’ve had straight DJs hit on us and others wonder who the random chicks were in the booth,” she explains. “But way more people have shown their support and their desire to see us succeed.”

“We have been keeping an eye on Jawbreakers for several years,” says Damien Platt of Extrovert Music, a division of Vicious Recordings, the label that discovered Avicii when he was a teenager and released his first ten records. “When Kali and Sabrina presented us with demos of the EP, we were instantly fans of the music. It’s fun, its camp and its quality music.”

“We’re lucky to live in an era when queer culture is proving that we can be a force in any and every industry,” Kali adds. “Never underestimate what a queen can achieve. It only makes us work harder.”

Jawbreakers is not Extrovert Music’s first foray into gay dancefloor music. Label co-founder Andy Van, of the band Madison

Jawbreakers’ “Just A Taste” is being distributed through Extrovert Music and is available on Apple Music, Spotify and all digital platforms. The “Boyfriend” video will be available on YouTube on January 21. Follow on Instagram @ JawbreakersDJ
