COVER TOP LGBTQ+ DESTINATIONS IN 2024

For LGBTQ individuals, finding LGBTQ-friendly travel destinations is an important part of the experience where there are many options for those seeking a safe and welcoming space to prioritize their mental and physical health. Sometimes a break away from the day-to-day grind is exactly what your mind and body need, and traveling gives you the space and time to relax, check in with yourself, and divest yourself of some of the stress that work, personal relationships, and general life come with, even if only temporarily. From gorgeous beach destinations to dynamic urban experiences, LGBTQ travelers are always looking for that next “new” place to visit. But the queer community still has some old standbys, places that are accepting and hold a special place in its collective heart. Because no matter what type of trip you’ve been dreaming of, we want to help you turn 2024 into the year you make it a reality. Here are a few of the top destinations that should be on the radar for queer travelers in 2024.

SITGES, SPAIN

In 2023 this destination topped the list, in 2024 it continues to be one of the top places to see and be seen This is one of Europe’s top LGBT travel destinations and it’s not hard to see why! Around an hour outside of Barcelona, Sitges is a beautiful destination full of pristine beaches, cobbled streets lined with quaint cafes and bars, and a large gay community. There are also regular events throughout the calendar year that draw LGBT travelers to this beachy town such as the huge annual Pride events that take place with gay parties on the beaches. Although neighboring Barcelona is often thought of first with its famous gay district of Eixample favored by many, Sitges has come up to challenge it as the number one destination in Spain for gay travelers.

SASKATOON, CANADA

This surprisingly dynamic Canadian prairie city is an undiscovered gem, with a lovely riverfront and a mind toward sustainability. There are many queer-owned businesses here, such as Turning the Tide, an alternative bookstore; Diva’s Nightclub; Positive Passions, a wellness center with a mind toward positive sexuality; Social Made Local for clothing and accessories, Nefelibata, an eco-alternative to buying new craft supplies; and Alt Haus, which is owned by Saskatoon’s queer power couple, Miranda Van Young (a registered interior designer) and Jo Van Young (a mural artist and collaborator)—a must stop in Saskatoon.

BELIZE

This English-speaking country is a bit Central America, a bit Caribbean in vibe, and is a popular beach, snorkeling, and diving destination. While the nation has room to advance more on LGBTQ rights, in the last decade, same sex has been decriminalized here, and courts have ruled that discrimination is illegal. Queer travelers here will generally find warm hospitality and some of the most incredible waters and coral reefs in this hemisphere.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Down Under’s South Australia features 12 distinct tourism regions and is bursting with wildlife encounters, culture, food, wine, and festivals. Adelaide has a Portland vibe, with an incredible culinary scene and proximity to the local wine country. Another internationally acclaimed wine region with some of the world’s oldest vines is Barossa, renowned for its Shiraz, Grenache, and other red wine varieties, along with some of the world’s greatest scenery. And Kangaroo Island boasts a raw and rugged coastline, impossibly clear waters, and unique and abundant wildlife.

CROATIA

Croatia’s legendary coastline has been attracting queer travelers in increasing numbers as an alternative to more heavily traveled European areas. High-end cruising with luxury groups like Brand g are hitting Croatia in 2024, giving LGBTQ folks access to gorgeous stops like Rovinj, Sibenik, and Dubrovnik.

ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO

New Mexico’s charming capital is a delightful mix of new and old, with Route 66 history, Native American culture, incredible cuisine, and high-tech jobs in the aerospace and defense industries, buoyed by nearby Sandia National Laboratory. Stay in queer-owned Hotel Parq Central and lunch at queer-owned The Range Café. Nightspots include Effex Nightclub and Sidewinders Bar & Grill.

MADRID, SPAIN

Spain’s capital city is a queer favorite, and for those who haven’t been, there’s no time like the present. The city’s Chueca district is like a bizarro world, where 80 percent of couples on the street seem to be LGBTQ community members. You’ll find endless nightclubs, excellent restaurants, world class museums and art, and plenty more.

COOK ISLANDS

Along with Barbados, the Cook Islands have very recently decriminalized same sex relations (as of this June). Queer and trans folks have been a longtime part of the culture here before colonization, so attitudes here are nuanced. The Cook Islands is a self-governing nation and in free association with New Zealand, about 2,000 miles to the southwest. The islands are popular for their unmatched beaches, crystal clear water, lack of crowds, and variety of resorts and price points.

NORTHERN PORTUGAL

Porto, the region’s largest city, has a growing LGBTQ scene. It hosts an annual Pride parade, typically in July, which is a celebration of diversity and inclusivity. Nearby Matosinhos Beach is known for being queer-friendly. It’s a popular spot for socializing, sunbathing, and enjoying the lively beach bars. The beach also hosts occasional LGBTQ events during the summer. Other hot areas include Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a blend of history and culture, and wine tours in the Douro Valley, a romantic and serene getaway.

10 THESTANDARDPS.COM

BARBADOS

This island nation (and famed home of Rihanna) has stunning beaches, some lovely rums, and a lot of culture. It’s also been off the radar for many queer travelers due to its strident anti-gay attitudes. But that’s now changing, as Barbados has become one of the newest countries to strike down its anti-gay laws, hopefully just one step toward more acceptance. And for those who feel that visibility will change hearts and minds, Barbados is now a safer place to vacation in—and work toward those ends.

MILAN, ITALY

From architecture to fashion to cuisine, LGBTQ visitors will enjoy this dynamic European city, a short distance from the Alps and famed spots like Lake Como. Quiiky Travel is a tour operator here focused on LGBTQ experiences in Italy, with nearly 50 different options, such as a “Gay Light on Leonardo da Vinci” and “House of Gucci” tours.

FRENCH POLYNESIA

The islands of the South Pacific have a long history of recognizing a third gender, putting them light years ahead of many other cultures. These island groups, in addition to being romantic getaways for any couples, are ideal for queer couples, given the openness and acceptance in this part of the world. Queer travelers will also enjoy the fascinating local cuisines, which incorporate native, Chinese, and French attributes, along with fresh fish galore.

VANCOUVER, CANADA

Come for Pride—one of Canada’s largest, with 80,000 revelers—from July 27 to August 4, but stay for the incredible diversity of urban pleasures and outdoor adventure, from mountain hiking to sea kayaking. Davie Village is the city’s dynamic gayborhood, but you’ll find queer acceptance everywhere in this progressive city.

OSAKA, JAPAN

Osaka is home to Japan’s second-largest queer scene outside of Tokyo. Known for its hospitality and incredible cuisine, Osaka Prefecture was the first regional-level government to create a samesex partnership. According to the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA), more that 500 couples have already registered for this partnership. And IGLTA has scheduled its annual Global Convention for 2024 in Osaka, the first time ever in Asia.

GRAN CANARIA, CANARY ISLANDS

A Spanish island off the coast of Africa, this place is almost guaranteed to have amazing weather year-round. Gays and lesbians congregate in the southern section of the island, specifically Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles. The Yumbo Centre is a big shopping mall full of gay and lesbian bars, clubs, and restaurants. Enjoy the sun, the beaches, the boating, and two Pride events in May and November.

12 THESTANDARDPS.COM

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

Argentina was the first Latin American country to legalize gay marriage in 2010 and the right to change gender in 2012. The best areas of this city are Palermo, San Telmo, and Recoleta, including such night spots as the Glam Club, Sitges Bar, and the Pride Café. One of the most popular activities is same-sex tango dancing at two places in the city – La Marshall and Tango Queer.

November is a great time to visit Argentina because it is late spring there, and the month of the Buenos Aires Gay Festival.

NEW YORK CITY, USA

Aside being on everyone’s travel bucket list and an amazing and one-of-a-kind place to be, NYC is also seen as being the mecca for the equality movement.

You can still visit the Stonewall Inn today and pay homage to those that rioted before us so that the queer community can have the freedoms it has today.

Other than that, there’s so much to see and do in the concrete jungle, but with a strong LGBTQIA+ community, you MUST experience New York’s coolest gayborhoods, including Chelsea, the West Village, Hell’s Kitchen, Williamsburg and Parks Slope.

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND

If there was ever a place to go to get in touch with yourself and feel at peace, it’s Iceland. Iceland is easily one of the coolest countries on the planet and it just so happens to be one of the most gay-friendly countries as well! What a win.

There are many ways LGBTQ+ travelers can explore Iceland, and one of the best parts is there is no ‘zone’, the queer scene is in every space in Reykjavik and the entire country celebrates people from all backgrounds. What a way to feel right at home.

MYKONOS, GREECE

And our number one spot goes to… Mykonos, not only a top gayfriendly travel destination in Europe, but in the ENTIRE world. Every August, over 30,000 queer travelers visit this beach destination to enjoy great DJs, beaches and all the sun, sea and fun that Mykonos has to offer. Take the time to explore the quiet side of the island like Ano Mera Village, Little Venice and the windmills… a sunset here will make you want to stay forever.

BERLIN, GERMANY

Famous for its energetic and youthful scene, Berlin is where you go to completely let loose and be free and be 100% yourself –no shame allowed! The city has a flourishing gay community and a dynamic scene.

This countercultural capital has some of the most iconic nightlife in the world, as well as one of the biggest Pride parties which will really allow you to wave your freak flag high!

So, no matter where you decide to go, be it around your town or around the world, make it an awesome, memorable and most of all a relaxing getaway…

PLANNING THE PERFECT LGBTQ+ CRUISE

Travel is one of the best ways to experience the world and learn about cultures that are different from your own. But when you’re traveling as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it can be comforting to venture out with a group of like-minded people.

Thinking about a cruise? These LGBTQ-focused travel companies can help you plan the perfect voyage. They mainly specialize in partial- or full-ship charters, where many cabins (if not all of them) is reserved for your group.

ATLANTIS EVENTS

Established in 1991, Atlantis specializes in LGBTQ+ travel but mostly caters to the gay male community. Although it does offer chartered experiences at a handful of land-based resorts, most of its events are cruise ship charters.

In addition to raucous parties and handpicked entertainment, Atlantis provides luxury, camaraderie and adventure in some of the world’s most beautiful locations. These trips are ideal for gay travelers looking to mingle and party, as well as couples who want to get away with others in the gay community. www.atlantisevents.com

BRAND G VACATIONS

A premier operator of luxury river cruises and land tours, Brand g has been around for more than a decade. It currently has 17 sailings scheduled for 2022 and 2023, some of which are already sold out. Lines include Amadeus River Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises, among others. Available options take passengers along the Rhine, Danube, Mekong, Moselle, Ganges and more. Because the company specializes in river cruises with a few exceptions, you’ll travel with between 40 and 200 passengers in an intimate full charter setting that caters to the LGBTQIA+ community and its straight allies. www.brandgvacations.com

GAYSAIL

Netherlands-based GaySail organizes small-group, gay charter voyages aboard sailing yachts. Each boat carries between 10 and 16 passengers, with one to three vessels sailing together for a group of anywhere from 10 to 30 men. GaySail’s nude cruise arm, GayNudeSail, offers similar sailings with a clothingoptional atmosphere. Guests come from across the globe, but the official language spoken on board is English. The main difference in atmosphere between a GaySail cruise and a gay cruise on a large cruise ship is that the former has more of a laid-back vibe — which means no raucous parties, all-day entertainment or daily housekeeping services. www.gaysail.com

OLIVIA TRAVEL

Originally founded as Olivia Records with the aim of helping women launch their own music careers, Olivia Travel has planned trips for more than 350,000 lesbians and other LGBTQ women since it switched its focus four decades ago. Specializing in women-only travel for members of the LGBTQ+ community, Olivia offers fullcharter vacations, many of them cruises. Because of its musical roots, Olivia has called on big-name talent, such as the Indigo Girls and Cris Williamson, to perform on some of its sailings. www.olivia.com

OUT ADVENTURES

This Canada-based company focuses on gay travel for smaller groups, offering a more upscale and intimate experience. Travelers can either join existing land-based tours of no more than 16 people or they can plan their own tour, with the agency tailoring the experience to client preferences. Cruises sponsored by Out Adventures max out at 40 people, ensuring cruisers feel like more than just a number. This can also present a chance for singles to meet others in a more tight-knit setting. Additionally, Out Adventures’ trips focus on boutique experiences in port while striving to give back to global LGBTQ communities — $50 from each passenger’s booking is donated to Rainbow Railroad — while helping to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time regarding local customs and attitudes. www.outadventures.com

PIED PIPER TRAVEL

In business for more than 30 years, Pied Piper Travel offers gay and lesbian group sailings on several cruises each year. Passengers tend to be mostly gay men of all ages, but lesbians and non-gay or -lesbian friends and family members are also welcome to join. Although it isn’t possible to know how big your group will be ahead

of time, past trips have hosted between 15 and 900 passengers. If a group minimum of 10 people is met, Pied Piper will assign an onboard host to lead group gatherings, shore excursions and more. www.piedpipertravel.com

SALTYBOYS SAILING CRUISES

Like GaySail, Saltyboys is a Netherlands-based travel company that specializes in small-group, gay-men-only cruises on sailing ships. The main difference is that while GaySail offers cruises for passengers who don’t feel comfortable going au naturel, all of Saltyboys’ voyages are designated as either clothing optional or nudist. Each vessel carries about 10 passengers in addition to the crew, and boats might sail in a flotilla of more than one vessel, meaning your group could join up with others while in port. All voyages include the services of a skipper and crew. Although no sailing experience is required, if you don’t wish to learn how to help with anchoring or do your own grocery shopping or cooking, Saltyboys also offers luxury sailings where your fare includes a cook, so everything will be handled for you. www.saltyboys.com

SOURCE JOURNEYS

For two decades, Source Events has offered all-gay luxury travel that balances adventure with class, catering equally to singles and couples in groups ranging from 15 to 300 people. The company also donates a portion of all proceeds to LGBTQ charities. www. book.sourcejourneys.com

TOTO TOURS

Toto Tours is the oldest LGBTQ+-focused travel company that has had the same management throughout its tenure. Opened in 1990, the agency helps gays, lesbians, and their friends and family members travel in comfort and safety.

Most of Toto’s business comes from land-based trips and tours, including customized ones, but it does occasionally add cruises to its repertoire. www.tototours.com

VACAYA

Vacaya prides itself on serving the entire LGBTQ+ community and its allies rather than focusing heavily on just gay men. The company provides fully chartered access to all-inclusive, land-based resorts, but where it really shines is with its cruises. Often offering both river and ocean cruise options, this travel agency mixes fun with adventure and learning on ships both large and small, allowing you to find a sailing that meets your preferences. It can also help to match you with a roommate to offset costs if you’re traveling alone. www.myvacaya.com

INDESIGN TRAVEL & THE “STAY-CATION”

Global tourism is bigger than ever. We Americans are visiting all corners of planet, like never before. Is it a new found wanderlust? Or maybe, it is post-pandemic restlessness, in any case, we cannot get enough of travel. The flip side of that coin are the crowds. The sheer number of people on the streets of Paris, London, Rome and other European cities is overwhelming. Some cities like Venice, Italy, in response to the deluge of tourists and the outcry of its citizens, is taking to limiting the number of visitors per day and charging for entrance to the city. Though disappointing, it is also understandable when you consider that the great monuments and museums all over Europe are being destroyed from the sheer weight of this human tide.

I have an answer, or at least an alternative to the summer crush that is about to begin. Why not try a “stay-cation”? That is a term used to describe a vacation you spend at home. A stay-cation can save you time, money and all the hassles of travel. Just think of it, no traffic, not airport lines, overbooked flights, missed connections and the otherworldly costs of your holiday. Why not stay home and actually enjoy your home? Revel in its beauty, comfort and style. Maybe even consider spending just a fraction of your travel money to update and feather that nest. You can sleep in and not feel guilty. You can spend the day resting, relaxing and luxuriating in your mini-resort. You might even invite friends over for a barbecue, a brunch, lunch or dinner.

I do a great deal of preaching; some may even say pontificating in these pages in regard to living well. I have often said to our design clients at Foley & Stinnette Interiors, that I shouldn’t have to shame anyone into living well….but, I will if you make me! This is a perfect

opportunity to look at your home through different lenses. It means considering the details of your home if you choose to stay home for that week. ask yourself, what do I most to be truly comfortable? What amenities do I want in my home, that I loved in that last hotel or resort where I had such a memorable stay? The answer can be big or small and to make a stay-cation truly successful, like any trip, it takes some thought and planning to make it notable.

As always, the question is, where do you start? That is where I come in. let’s start with some easy things that you can do without leaving your home to prepare for your stay-at-home vacation. These are easy, simple and budget-friendly additions that will make it more fun to stay home.

20 THESTANDARDPS.COM

• Consider a new set of bedding. Fresh sheets and a stylish new duvet, shams and pillows can transform your bed and bedroom.

• While considering the bedding, you could also try adding a feather bed or pillow top on your existing mattress. It adds a layer of luxury and comfort to any bed.

• Do you have dimmers on those bedside lamps? If not, pick up a simple plug-in version at your local hardware store. It will automatically change the mood of your room.

• There are simple upgrades to your bathroom that will add a level of spa-like style too.

* Add a removable shower head with a hose to your existing tub or shower. not only does the upgrade make showering more pleasurable but, it makes cleaning the tub/shower even faster and easier

* New bath towels are a luxury at any time. treat yourself to the softest and fluffiest all-natural material you can find and afford.

* Buy some new bath and body products. Just like a stay in a luxury hotel, a new product or new scent will enhance your experience and pleasure.

• Buy yourself a new cookbook that you find interesting. The style of cuisine does not matter, your stay-cation is about indulging your desires. Try making something totally new for yourself and invite friends over to share in the experience and flavors.

• While you are trying out those new culinary endeavors, pick up some new dishware to enliven your new way of eating. Remember, presentation is everything!

• Don’t forget the outdoors. There may not be a better way to create that home resort vibe, than with some stylish outdoor living space upgrades.

* If you already have the patio furniture you love, add some new colorful outdoor pillows.

* A fresh outdoor rug is probably in order. Remember outdoor rugs are not really made to be exposed to

the elements. Think of them as “care-free” rugs instead. Keep them under cover and they will last for years.

* New cushions on your lounges and other outdoor furniture makes everything look and feel fresh.

* A new umbrella in a different color than before or a warm neutral is a chic way to stay cool and look fabulous while doing it.

* Now is the time to find that perfect outdoor tray and unbreakable glass wear to host a cocktail party….try doing an afternoon drinks soiree. It feels more casual and vacation-esque. https://www.foodandwine.com/ cocktails-spirits/sangria/sangria-recipes

* Time to try out some new sangria recipes! It’s the perfect stay-cation cocktail for pre-5 o’clock gatherings.

These are just a few ideas and reasons for staying home and locking the doors. If you choose the stay-cation approach, remember it is, still all about you, your needs, your relaxation. You don’t have to go overboard to make changes that will make staying home the best decision you make all summer.

As always, my friends, Live Well!

FEATURE TRAVEL COMPANIES THAT OFFER CUSTOM LGBTQ TOURS

Why Do A Private Tour Instead Of A Group Tour?

Group tours tend to cost less than private tours. However, they’re also less flexible. The tour dates are set in advance, there’s no telling who will be on your tour (even if it’s all LGBTQ travelers), and the itinerary may include some activities you don’t care for. A private tour means you travel when you want, do what you want, and go with your partner, family or even try a solo trip. Here are some more advantages to a private tour instead of a group tour:

Pace: You can go at your own pace without feeling rushed or having to wait for a larger group. This can be especially helpful for LGBT families with young children.

Exclusivity: Some sites or activities are not suitable for large groups. On a private tour, you can have an attraction or experience all to yourself. If a local guide is showing you around, you’ll also get more personalized attention.

Introvert-friendly: For introverts like me, the social interaction that comes with a group tour can feel like work. A private tour means no need to make small talk.

Trans-friendly: While there are gay and lesbian tour companies that welcome trans travelers, not all do. Rather than go on a group tour and risk microaggressions, trans and nonbinary travelers can make sure they’re traveling with supportive people by curating their own small-group tour with a trans friendly travel agency.

Why

Choose An LGBT Travel Agency?

Do you really need an LGBT travel agency for a private tour? Technically, no. Any travel agency can help you plan a dream trip. But in my experience, LGBT travel agencies have a better understanding of the local climate. They know LGBTQ friendly hotels, clubs and bars, gayborhoods, and inclusive local guides.

For LGBTQ friendly destinations like Europe or Latin America, you can find much of this information on your own, with research. But why spend time on it if you’ve hired a travel agent to develop a custom itinerary?

For destinations that are not considered LGBTQ friendly, like Africa, it’s critical that you use an LGBTQ-owned or LGBTQ-friendly travel agency to plan your tour.

FEATURE DOCUMENTS LGBTQ+ FAMILIES SHOULD ALWAYS CARRY WHEN TRAVELING

While LGBTQI+ families planning trips with points and miles share most of the same highs and lows of any family traveling together, there are some challenges unique to the LGBTQ+ family travel space. Traveling with small children already comes with a new set of distinctly non-glamorous and nerve-wracking hurdles. The anxiety that can accompany all family travel may increase several notches, however, when you travel as an LGBTQ+ family, especially given some common heteronormative expectations. It is the more formal scrutiny that happens at airport check-ins, security screenings, passport control, hotel check-ins and even unplanned visits to the emergency rooms that can trip up even the most seasoned LGBTQI+ family travelers.

With that in mind, there’s one thing LGBTQ+ families should never leave home without, whether your destination is Maine or Madrid: a bag full of important documents. These documents include:

Your child’s birth certificate

If you or your partner are not a parent listed on your child’s birth

certificate, make sure you have a notarized letter from the parent whose name is listed that authorizes you to travel with the child.

Official adoption paperwork

We only stopped carrying adoption papers for our daughters when they were 10 or 11 years old. It wasn’t until then that we felt comfortable that they could answer questions for themselves. Add your child’s official adoption paperwork from the state in which you live to your carry-on bag.

Custody documents for minors

Carrying custody documents for minors is even more important if your children do not have the same last name as you.

Notarized ‘permission to travel’ letter.

If you and the child you are traveling with don’t share the same last name, it is smart to have a letter from your partner (preferably notarized) that stipulates that you have permission to travel with

28 THESTANDARDPS.COM

your child. If you’re traveling internationally with a child who’s under 16, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol advises that: “Unless the child is accompanied by both parents, the child should have a notarized letter from the other parent or signed by both parents stating, ‘I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission.’”

Copy of health insurance cards

In addition to the health insurance cards you have in your wallet, take pictures of the cards so you’ll have digital copies, too. It doesn’t hurt to carry an additional paper copy, as well. Reach out to your insurance company and see if they will issue a card with your child’s name on it along with yours (however, most insurance companies only issue cards under the policyholder’s name).

Emergency contact information

Carry a list that includes phone numbers for your family’s pediatrician, dentist and any other medical professionals your family uses. In addition to the documents outlined above, some extra preparations may be helpful for LGBTQI+ families to travel securely and happily.

Choose your destination wisely.

There are more than 70 countries that consider consensual same-sex relations a crime. In some of them, these “crimes” may carry a severe punishment. So why would you go there? Why would you take your kids there? We decided not to travel to specific places because we didn’t want our daughters in those types of countries. You can check out the U.S. Department of State’s website for safety tips for LGBTQI+ travelers. Also use the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, as it is a comprehensive travel-planning resource.

Be ready for dumb questions.

Unfortunately, people all over the world can occasionally be

ignorant and cringe-worthy questions ensue. We’ve been asked, “Where’s the mommy?” when checking in to a hotel or a flight. It gets uncomfortable but instead of reacting angrily, I try to use it as a teaching moment to help the person better understand my family. Most times the person apologizes when corrected, embarrassed by their faux pas.

Patronize companies that support the LGBTQI+ community.

Anyone who travels wants to feel welcome. For LGBTQI+ families there is the added anxiety of not knowing how they will be received. Take away some of that anxiety by using travel brands that train employees on inclusion and make a concerted effort to be queerfriendly. Hilton, Kimpton and Fairmont are some of our favorite hotel brands for this very reason. Most of the U.S.-based airlines also have inclusivity training and programs dedicated specifically to LGBTQI+ customers and families.

Be prepared for the paperwork headaches.

Before you can plan your next fabulous overseas adventure, you must obtain passports for your family. For LGBTQI+ families, that is not always straightforward. You’ll need an original birth certificate to obtain a passport from the U.S. Department of State. Get the birth certificate by submitting a request to the Bureau of Vital Statistics. The request must be submitted in the state of your child’s birth, which is not necessarily the state you live in now. Single parents may get pushback from the agency because of the lack of a custody agreement. Look for the newest forms that stipulate “Father/ Mother/Parent” to help alleviate this issue.

Although it can be difficult to travel as an LGBTQI+ family, it’s beyond worth it. Every time LGBTQI+ families travel, it is certain that it’s showing the world that we are just the same as any other family. Hopefully it is changing their perspective and traveling somewhere awesome at the same time.

NYE HIGHLIGHTS DAP HEALTH

EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DOXYPEP

A hefty dose of antibiotics. A big syringe in the derrière. Getting treated for an STI is not fun — to say nothing of the symptoms and risks involved with contracting one like syphilis, gonorrhea, or chlamydia. With the CDC reporting rising numbers — gonorrhea is up 11% over the last five years, syphilis is up 79% — risk of infection is on the rise.

However, clinicians around the country, spurred by recently released guidance from the CDC, are recommending the antibiotic doxycycline as a means of post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP for short) to prevent the spread of STIs. I spoke with DAP Health Chief of Community Health C.J. Tobe about this prevention strategy.

Let’s start with the basics. What is DoxyPEP?

DoxyPEP, or doxycycline, is a 200-milligram pill that can be taken within 24 to 72 hours after sex. It reduces a person’s chance of contracting either chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis by up to 70%. Doxycycline has been around for quite some time and is used to treat STIs and acne.

How sexually active do you need to be to justify a prescription?

It’s going to look different depending on a person’s lifestyle and the conversation with their provider. For example, if you have sex Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, you can take DoxyPEP that Monday morning and you’re good. Let’s say you’re having sex five times a week, then you should probably talk to your doctor about switching to DoxyPrEP.

And what’s DoxyPrEP?

DoxyPrEP would be taking 100 milligrams of doxycycline daily as a preventative measure. That’s typically for people who either want to make sure they’re protected, or they’re having frequent sex, or they may be a sex worker.

Are there side effects? Isn’t doxy tough on the GI tract?

A lot of the side effects that get reported are GI issues. So, we recommend people take the medication with food or a carbonated

drink. When people take a higher dose of doxycycline, like 200 milligrams twice a day, the side effects increase. If you go on DoxyPrEP, that’s just 100 milligrams once a day. And I can tell you it’s such a low dose that most folks don’t have side effects.

One of my worst nightmares, and it’s one shared by the World Health Organization, is that an STI becomes resistant to antibiotics. Is that a concern with people regularly taking doxy?

Part of the medical community is hesitant to embrace this strategy because they don’t know what could happen in terms of drug resistance. The other half are saying, “We need to get people on it right now because it’s an important preventative tool.” There’s always going to be a risk of drug resistance when people don’t follow the dosing recommendation of a doctor. As a public health person seeing the rise in STIs, I think a patient who is having sex should have that conversation with their doctor and see if DoxyPEP is right for them. Personally, I’ve been on doxy since 2020 and it’s been a lifesaver.

MATT CULLEN’S OUR QUEER LIFE SERIES UNITES THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY

Matt Cullen has made it his mission to help destigmatize topics like gay sex work and amplify important issues such as the misrepresentation of trans men and women. On his popular YouTube show, Our Queer Life, he shines the spotlight on those in the community who have lived in the shadows for too long: ballroom queens, gay Orthodox Jews, gay cowboys in rodeo, adult film stars, and trans women who are addicted to illegal plastic surgery.

Matt’s belief is that viewers who identify with the people he spotlights in Our Queer Life may get a better understanding of them and perhaps, feel a bit of empathy for their plights. “In these divided times, it is more important than ever before that the LGBTQ+ community and its allies make an effort to find common ground with one another. We’re stronger together, so let us stand united.”

We spoke with Matt Cullen from his home in Los Angeles.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned from interviewing so many people who are fighting to live their authentic true selves?

Matt Cullen: The biggest lesson I have learned is the true inner resilience we have as human beings. In the darkest of times, the people I have interviewed have been able to pick themselves up and live another day. Their strength is something I carry with me everywhere I go.

Is there one key element that all of these people share? Where do they get their strength?

MC: I think it is the want for love and true acceptance. I think it’s what we all desire: acceptance for who we are, for how we choose to live our lives, and for who we love. Many of the guests I’ve had on have lost contact with their family since choosing to live authentically for themselves, and while that is horrible, I think many find their strength through that as well. Realizing that sometimes,

when you want to live your life for yourself and no one else, you may lose people in your life. But through that, you find your inner strength. We truly have one life to live, and it’s for us to live and no one else.

Is the queer community a true rainbow of acceptance or do we simply co-exist in our own letters (LGBTQ) and labels within the community?

MC: While I would like to think that the queer community is a true rainbow of acceptance, I think, lately, there has been a lot of segregation within the letters of our community. I truly hope that my series helps bridge those separations. We are stronger together as one.

How do you suggest we open our hearts and minds to people in the community we wouldn’t normally engage with?

MC: I think the best way to open our hearts and minds to people is to listen. So often, as a society, we are quick to talk and to put people into a box. If we can just take a minute to listen, to ask questions, to find the similarities, we may come to realize that we are all so much more alike than we would think. My series has opened me up to talking to all different types of people, and I have left every interview feeling so inspired and deeply connected to the person I am interviewing. We may walk very different walks of life, but after our conversation, I’m reminded that we are similar in so many ways.

MUST SEE

How many interviews have you done at this point?

MC: I have done over 100 interviews! It has been a life changing experience that has changed who I am as a man.

Do you have a whole team supporting you or is Our Queer Life a one-man operation?

MC: This is completely a one-man operation! It is my everything. I eat, breath, and sleep this show. Editing it, scouting interviews, booking travel, making thumbnails, clipping it for Instagram and TikTok. Our Queer Life takes up every minute of my day, but I wouldn’t want to spend my time any other way. Being creative, putting my work out into the world, having these deep conversations; these are the things that keep me truly happy.

Which stories that have meant the most to you?

MC: It’s hard to pick what stories have resonated with me the most, but when I think back on my show, I think my time with Mousie has been extremely impactful. Mousie was a street hustler who had spent most of her life in and out of prison. She’s a trans woman,

and will stand up for anyone in our community that is getting picked on or is in need of someone to help win a fight on the streets. She believed people outside of our community looked at us as weak, as easy targets, so her mission was to show them that we are not to be messed with. She is no longer with us, but I carry her and her stories with me everywhere I go. She always told me how much she believed in me, how I was her little brother, and I feel her with me as the show grows and reaches more people.

What do you hope viewers ultimately take away from the Our Queer Life series?

MC: I simply hope they are reminded how strong, unique, layered, and truly beautiful LGBTQ+ people are. The stories we share on Our Queer Life make me proud to be a part of the community.

PERSPECTIVE HEAR YE, HEAR YE, ONE AND ALL!

I am on top of the world and want to share with you why! But first, I want to wish you a Happy May! May it bring you all the happiness you deserve, want and need.

As a human who has suffered with Thyroid problems, hypothyroidism, ( an under active thyroid)since early childhood and who has been on thyroid medication for the last 24 years, I feel it makes me a good candidate to share with you the two new products that are literally changing my life.

You know I’m not a doctor and I’m no longer work as a nurse but worked as one for 20 years until the mid 90s. I am neither recommending that you take these products nor do I work for these companies or receive any monetary rewards for sharing them, but instead want you to have the opportunity to explore them for yourselves if you have any of the symptoms that I’ll be talking about.

As a menopausal woman for the last 25 years, I have experienced all sorts of side effects, which has led me to do more research including consulting with physicians, alternative practitioners, friends, scientists etc., to alleviate these symptoms which over the counter and prescription medications have not been able to touch. I’ve tried numerous diets. I’ve done hair testing to learn about food intolerances, I have prayed, done meditations, I’ve cried, screamed and resigned myself to the fact that there’s nothing more that I could do to help these symptoms go away.

I have not sweat for over 10 years, regardless of the type of activity in which I was engaged. I have heat coming off my body that people notice when they go to hug me, but a thermometer won’t register as abnormal when I take my temperature! I can’t sleep with any clothes on regardless of the season, nor can I have any sheets or blankets on me year-round which means I must sleep in an airconditioned room set at 70 degrees! These are the top concerns on my list but there are more!

A month ago, as I was listening to a podcast in my typical style which has me playing solitaire while the podcast is playing in the background, when I heard this 50-year-old doctor talk about how she had been a competitive bodybuilder who was now suffering from symptoms that her doctors could not make heads or tails of nor could help her alleviate. She was telling my story, but he had my full attention when she began talking about the heat that was building up in her body! No matter what she did, nothing would make it go away. That’s when she had my undivided attention.

She began talking about T2, a hormone that our thyroid gland produces, but one that is not talked about in any of the books that I have been studying for 24 years. Nor has any doctor mentioned testing or trying T2. She claims that she got together with a group of scientists to develop four ingredients that mimic T2 in our bodies and claimed that it helped her especially with the heat issue. I immediately decided to order the product, knowing that it may not do anything for me at all but had definitely piqued my interest.

38 THESTANDARDPS.COM

The results have been phenomenal. I started her product, Thyroid Fixxr and immediately noticed many changes in my body not to mention a change in the heat I stored. This included a decrease in my heart rate while dancing, which typically runs between 140-160 bpm, and is now down to 120-130 bpm! Then I noticed that my heart rate while doing my daily cardio dropped from 108-112bpm down to 98-102bpm, but my caloric output increased by 130 calories, indicating a rise of my metabolism which will eventually translate into fat loss! I also noticed that I was beginning to perspire just a tiny bit which was exciting and made me a bit more hopeful.

My dreams became more vivid, and my sleep deeper and longer than it has been in years. I went from sleeping about five hours a night to almost 7-1/2 hours per night. So, I’m much more well-rested.

The second product is one that I have taken for years but had no knowledge of its effect because I never knew what to expect from it. It is the element Iodine, a product that all people suffering from hypothyroidism should be taking. I did not know that there is

only one form of absorbable Iodine. However, when I watched a video explaining how to determine the efficacy of Iodine, I decided to buy this brand.

I started taking it over the weekend and by Tuesday I was shocked when while doing my regular morning cardio that my body was dripping wet including the back of my head and hair! When I tell you that this has not happened ever in my lifetime, I am not exaggerating! What a relief to think that I can finally release toxins from my body on a regular basis knowing full well that I am making my body healthier and will ultimately live longer and better!

It’s still early days but I have a feeling I will see even more changes as time goes on. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms that I have mentioned I hope you will consider investigating these products for yourself. I am super excited to share any of this information with you, so don’t hesitate to reach out.

XOXO,

INDIE GAY MUSICIANS PUSH TO GET THEIR SOUNDS HEARD IN THIS SEASON OF MAJOR POP RELEASES

This isn’t traditionally known as a big time for new music releases, but this season’s offerings are bigger and better than ever. A batch of major A-listers are delivering highly anticipated albums: from the Queen Bee’s Cowboy Carter and Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department to new music from Dua Lipa, Normani, Billie Eilish, and, of course, Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine.

It can be tough for an indie musician to get their tunes heard in such a crowded field, but these are the gay artists and their new tracks that are breaking through the noise. And no, we’re not only talking dance floor music! These performers are serving hits in pop, jazz, and even country music, ya’ll.

BRIAN FALDUTO

“Why’d You Come in Here Lookin’ Like That?”

Brian Falduto’s remake of Dolly Parton’s “Why’d You Come in Here Lookin’ Like That” is the adorable out singer at his sassiest and most irresistible. The song is fast-paced, and raucous, just like Dolly’s. Her version objectified cowboys in ways they weren’t used to at the time, and Falduto’s remake does too, but in a more modern way that is sure to keep the strappin’ fellers on their toes. Accompanying the song is a music video that features Dan Amboyer from Younger and Uncoupled as a rugged Marlboro man. He plays the scoundrel that has the audacity to come into the honky tonk lookin’ like that and let’s just say that Brian Falduto won’t be the only one hankering to saddle up on him.

JACE M AND TOY ARMADA (FEATURING JOEY DIAMOND)

“Waiting for Tonight”

Queen House Music

Dance music producers Jace M and Toy Armada are putting their own spin on Jennifer Lopez’s club-ready 1999 track, with the help of out artist Joey Diamond. Few are aware that Lopez’s version was also a cover. The song was originally released by girl group 3rd Party. JLo upped the tempo to 125 BPM; Jace M and Toy Armada

crank up the energy even higher by combining Diamond’s exuberant vocals with lots of heavy drums and full synths. This celebratory staple is the perfect happy antidote for all the anxiety many of us are feeling over the pending national elections. It is destined to be a song of the summer.

JOHNNY BLOOM

“Roarin’ 20s”

So Fierce Music/The Orchard/Sony Music

Young Johnny Bloom is ushering in a new age of jazz with this unconventional diddy inspired by music from the early and midtwentieth century. Think Ella Fitzgerald and Marvin Gaye meets Miley Cyrus, and Adam Lambert. “Roarin’ 20s” harkens back to a post-war era when young people were dancing to the Charleston and the Shimmy. Bloom gives his track a modern twist. The song is fun and flirty, with an attention-grabbing swing that mixes elements of blues, ragtime, marching music and African folk rhythm. An impressive debut.

WILS

“Dancing Lights”

The latest - and last! - release from the Singapore pop singing sensation is an uplifting dance track that tackles issues of self-esteem and insecurity and promotes a message of self-empowerment and embracing inner beauty. It presents a moodier and more subdued hue than “Open Up Babe” and past songs from the artist, but Wils’ use of vocal effects and vintage synths really drive the song’s powerful message home. “Dancing Lights” is extremely raw, and depicts Wils as a vulnerable, relatable individual who is finally emerging from a dark hole of depression. Along with the single, the accompanying visual captures the essence of grief and its final stage of acceptance. Wils became famous ten years ago for being the world’s first openly gay Chinese pop singer. “Dancing Lights” is a stunning finale from an artist who has announced this will be his final music release.

Girls in Wonderland, the biggest LGBTQ festivals in Florida, is returning to Orlando for its 23rd anniversary. The iconic event will take place at a brand-new location, TownePlace Suites Orlando/ SpringHill Suites by Marriott, May 30 through June 3rd, 2024.

This year marks the 23rd Anniversary of the coveted eventa weekend long live music, performance and comedy experience celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and creating a safe space for all to enjoy and connect.

Girls in Wonderland was founded in 2000 by the trio Amy Alonso, Alison Burgos and Yesenia Leon, the women behind Pandora Events. This powerhouse lesbian event production company from South Beach have created and produced some of the hottest LGBTQ+ soirées and music festival in the US including Girls in Wonderland (Orlando, FL), Shedonism (Las Vegas, NV), Aqua Girl (Miami, FL) among others.

In a little over two decades, the iconic GIW has become a force on its own with over 10,000 attendees coming from near and farrepresenting all colors of the rainbow - taking over a 700-room resort.

The event brings together some of the most influential LGBTQ+ artists, celebrities, athletes, influencers, and change-makers from around the country including Leisha Hailey, Kate Moennig, Fortune Feimster and Chante Wayans, to name a few.

This year will be no different with an entertainment roster featuring internationally acclaimed artists, DJs and local gems such as Snow Tha Product, Chloe Star, Gabby B, Rose Garcia, Citizen Jane, and DJ Tatiana, among others.

More than just a party, it is a party with a purpose and a mission - a platform for community engagement and support. This year the focus is on the non-profit organization Our Rainbow Nest

44 THESTANDARDPS.COM

Inc, which is an informational resource committed to helping gay, lesbian, and transgender start their families. The organization strives to provide the best resources available to those interested in taking the next step, and works with LGBTQ+ friendly reproductive doctors, sperm banks, surrogate and egg donor agencies, adoption agencies, and foster organizations.

“Every year Girls In Wonderland has been this really fun, huge women’s festival but we have been more than that, we always have a charity partner and we are speaking to our attendees about our community and what’s important to them from LGBTQ+ equality, to women’s health to guiding them on their journey to creating their own families to women’s mental health, it’s all part of our conversation and our commitment to our community,” comments Alison Burgos.

Florida has certainly been at the center of the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights these past few years. A boatload of new bills signed into law by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has covered Florida in controversy, igniting protests, lawsuits, and travel bans. A little reprieve fortunately came earlier this past month with Equality Florida celebrating a landmark achievement with the historic settlement in the challenge against the “Don’t Say Gay or Trans” law in the Sunshine State.

Why is it important for the trio to keep producing the event in Florida despite it all?

“This is an important question that we had to answer for ourselves last year. We are born and raised Florida girls and we started this

journey 23 years ago fighting for LGBTQ+ equality, we created Aqua Girl and the Aqua Foundation, the first LGBTQ+ women’s nonprofit in Florida, we volunteered, fund raised and sat on boards and committees for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Equality Florida and Save. We were on the frontlines for the past twenty-three years and when our governor decided to use our community as a political punching bag we were not going to run away or back down, we are going to stand up and fight the same way we have for 23 years. It really makes what we do even more important,” says Alison Burgos.

“For the past year we have been in constant conversations with Visit Orlando, the Mayor’s Office, the Orange County Sheriff, Come Out with Pride, and other community leaders across Orlando to make sure our festival was and will continue to be a safe place for our audience. We will not run away, and we will be here well after those political bullies are gone!”

Girls In Wonderland has been celebrating women and the LGBTQ+ community in Florida for more than 20 years. No matter what event you attend, the energy is always “come as you are”.

A MUST-ATTEND event for anyone looking to connect with others in a safe and inclusive place and celebrate their identity.

VISIT SEATTLE INVITES LGBTQIA+ COUPLES TO RENEW THEIR VOWS ABOARD THE ‘LOVE FOR ALL BOAT’

Ahead of Seattle’s 50th anniversary of Pride, Visit Seattle, the destination marketing organization for Seattle and King County, is proudly welcoming LGBTQIA+ couples from all over to make a splash with their love through a uniquely Seattle vow renewal experience. On May 30, the organization will transform one of the city’s famed cruising boats into the Love For All Boat – an ode to love, commitment, and belonging in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Tickets for this one-night celebration are now available at www. loveforallboat.org with comped admission available for guests of participating Downtown Seattle hotels ($100 value). The cruise will set sail from Pier 55 in Downtown Seattle at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the GSBA Scholarship Fund, which supports LGBTQIA+ and allied students.

The evening will be emceed by and include a performance from drag icon and Seattleite BenDeLaCreme. Appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 6 and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3, BenDeLaCreme rose to international acclaim through her powerhouse appearances on the show, earning her a spot among the show’s “15

Fan Favorites of All Time.” She has used her platform to fight back against anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiment and legislation sweeping the U.S. – educating audiences on dangerous rhetoric negatively impacting the queer and trans community on a global scale, while offering messages of hope to community members.

“I call Seattle the place that aligns with my sensibilities –the open, creative spirit of the city fosters this beautiful sense of belonging and love for the community,” said BenDeLaCreme, who has lived in Seattle since 2006. “The city has a deep history of showing up for the community; and of course, we’re a city that knows how to throw a big, queer party – so expect the best for the Love For All Boat. It’s an honor it is to emcee this tribute to LGBTQ+ love in the city I proudly call home.”

The sunset voyage will be aboard Argosy Cruises’ Salish Explorer, a 300 person-capacity cruising boat that will travel through the Puget Sound – offering stunning views of Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains, and Seattle’s famed skyline. As part of admission, guests will be treated to Pacific Northwest cuisine,

Washington wines, special performances, and other Seattle touches, including a one-of-a-kind gift bag curated from a variety of local LGBTQIA+-owned businesses. The pinnacle of the evening will be a vow renewal ceremony led by Justice Mary Yu, Washington’s first openly gay Asian American and Latina justice – who notably officiated Washington’s first same-sex marriage in 2012.

Seattle is home to one of the largest LGBTQIA+ populations in the country, with 17% of adults in the Seattle Metro Area identifying as community members according to Census Data. The LGBTQIA+ community has been integral to Seattle’s history and is pivotal to the city’s vibrant reputation today, thanks in part to a thriving LGBTQIA+ business community. Seattle is also home to one of the country’s largest free Pride festivals, which will celebrate 50 years this June.

“The Love For All Boat symbolizes Seattle’s commitment to being a destination that welcomes all community members with love, inclusion, and acceptance, year-round,” said Tammy Blount-Canavan, President and CEO of Visit Seattle. “We are honored for Seattle to have a place in the love stories of these couples through this vow renewal experience.”

Visit Seattle has a proud history of creating destination marketing campaigns that are inclusive to and honor the LGBTQIA+ community. This year will mark the tenth anniversary of the organization’s landmark ‘Marry Me in Seattle’ campaign. Developed to celebrate the passage of marriage equality in Washington state, Visit Seattle hosted four Seattle dream weddings for LGBTQIA+ couples from out of state.

Guests are encouraged to experience Seattle’s rich LGBTQIA+ culture while in town for the Love For All Boat experience. Eleven Seattle hotels are offering LGBTQIA+ pride-themed packages in celebration of the event. There’s something for every couple to enjoy, with benefits ranging from free room upgrades and dining credits to romantic extras, like spa coupons and in-room chocolate and bubbly.

“As the first hotel in Seattle to raise the Pride flag – now flying year-round – W Seattle is the epicenter of Pride celebrations

downtown,” said Greg Campbell, Director of Sales & Marketing for W Seattle. “In addition to hosting one of the city’s most popular drag brunches during Seattle Pride, our Love For All Boat 50 Years of Pride Package, complete with two tickets to the event, high-floor accommodations, a $50 beverage and food credit, and a bottle of wine from a local LGBTQIA+ owned winery, Aluel Cellars, speaks to our commitment to inclusion. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community myself, I am grateful to live in a city like Seattle, where love for all is celebrated. We look forward to welcoming couples for this exciting occasion!”
