SESAM010.CO.UK DIARY MON 15FEB Arrival Workshop introduction Welcome Party Task: First Impression of Manchester. How much Manchester do you know? Atfer all 10 Participants arrived at EASA HQ, Hulme Str. 43, we started to work on our first task. The Idea was to explore Manchester through 3 steps: Scetches, Photos and at the end a collection of several 3D Objects found around Maanchester- that at the end we were able to build up the concept of an exhibition that shows the „First sight“ of Manchester for the coming European Architecture students assembly from 31.July14th of August: EASA010.net THE

FIRST

IMPRESSION

We drew our first impressions of Manchester on Postcards and sent them back to the Organizers of EASA010, hosting the SESAM, a small european students of architecture meeting, which is part of „EASA: An Exhibition“. This is a Hommage to the Great Britain-First Class -Post Service: 1 Card didnt arrive and 5 werent stemped, but after all they are reflecting our first impressions of Manchester, or facts that we have heard before we have ever been here. Everyone might probly agree, that the first 2 things that come to our minds, when hearing Manchester is actually Football and Oasis, closly followed by brick and lots of Rain. But with this SESAM Workshop, we are trying to show what Manchester really is. Its not just Manchester united, music and rain, even though these 3 things are very important for Manchesters developement in the past. The rain was supporting the growing of Cotton, which gave

Manchester the Name Cottonopolis, first bestowed during the 19th century, it denotes a metropolis of cotton and cotton mills, as inspired by Manchester‘s status as the international centre of the cotton and textile processing industries during this time. Manchester United is also showing how important the association of Workers was that brought together Football Players in their spare time, while being the birthplace of Industriali-

zation facing big social differences between Workers and Management during the beginning, which also brought Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels here for starting the labour movement in Europe. Manchester also has music history like no other, manchester is one City of an assembled cast of artists, musicians, hooligans, writers, workers, students, entrepreneurs and poets playing out a unique history of a unique city.

TUE 16FEB Excursion: VisitManchester Tour (touristic) Workshop Task: Photography

It‘s pancake‘s Tuesday: Emma and James spoiled us with pancakes and sweet toppings for breakfast! With loads of energy we leave for the first tour through the city. Chris demonstrates his guiding talent and unfailing knowledge of his beloved Manchester.

ver, who happens to be an architect at the same time (no coincidence). One highlight of the tour certainly is the Trafford Centre, an outstanding piece of fake „renaissance“architecture. After sandwiches for lunch we are ready to do some work. Alastair comes over and encurages us to do some sketches and to select photos we took during the tour. As we stay in for the afternoon most of us get warm again, and the rest is being heatened up later thanks to the spicy(!) dinner.

The stories are starring: „the hacienda: discovery of rave music“, „the radisson: rolls visiting royce and starting a company“, „prince albert‘s statue: a shelter against pigeon shit“ and many more... As a surprise we get picked up at the Urbis by a traditional red double-decker bus. The evening program starts realNo walking anymore, yay! ly posh with a visit at the cloud23 VIP-area in the 23rd floor of the This allows us to expand the tour all Beetham Tower, better known around the (big) city of Manchester as Hilton Tower. The floor winand we are shown around and en- dow turns out to be rather poor, tertained by the hilarious bus dri- but the view over Manchester

(and the drinks) surely pay for it. Some are not too happy to miss the soccer game between ManU and Milan, but unfortunately the skybar doesn‘t provide a TV. The pub called Peveril of the Peak puts a nice contrast to that program, especially as it hosts 4 elder men playing irish songs on guitars and pipes. One of them especially attracts our attention by his outstanding look: a combination between tattoed head, nose rings, hot pants and knitwear. Of course the nice evening doesn‘t stop as we go back to HQ..

PS: It is Billy‘s birthday! Horray to this great Irish fellow to spend his 26th with us (and then the whole week..)!

WED 17FEB Excursion: UnseenManchester Tour (hidden Manchester) Workshop Task: Finding hidden/lost objects that reflect Manchester We‘ve discovered the third reincarnation of flash (for the former 2 cfr. wikipedia) on Wednesday we spent all the morning TRYING to follow Dominic „Flash“ Sagarl. He showed us the underground side of Manchester that practically means the canals, the late 70s aspect of the city and some other good related stories. that‘s it! It was hard finding lost objects, as Great Britains street are just to clean, and we didnt just want to collect trash. Unfortunaltly the TV , that someone trew out of the Window last night, probly cause of a lost Football match, was already cleaned away , when we wanted to get it.

in the end i realized why dominic runs so fast apparently violating certain laws of physics. he did that not because of the scarcity of time but because doing so he could resist to the REALLY freezing air of manchester. it‘s really cold here.

THU 18FEB Workshop Task: Installation and Conclusion of the 3 former steps of Design Thursday begins with the realisation that a lot of work needs to be done. Materials are ordered, photographs are processed and a physical object is obtained by each participant to represent a characteristic of the City. The maps by Ana and Adrian are combined to give a graphic image to be placed on the floor showing our path around Manchester and the sights we see, which include the canals, roads, railways and a brick construction symbolising the Hilton Tower seen from everywhere in the city. With the arrival of the materials there was then an ridiculous conversation about the colours of umbrellas and with the arrival of some more guests the atmosphere in the EASA HQ builds. Work begins on the empty room, tape is layed and umbrellas are hung while work on the rest of the exhibition gathers pace and manpower. The irish contingent arrives bringing one daft bastard and the work and beers then coontinue into the night.

FRI 19FEB Workshop completion 6 PM Exhibition Opening Assembly Workshops Announced Closing Party

Promotion Hoax: We also created Flyers and Posters for the Exhibition, hanging them up around the City and handing Flyers out-while using a famous Identity for starting a rumor of his attendance at the exhibition, that should People get to the EASAHQ, since Barry Adamson, was only becoming famous cause of EASA: Pls check it on Wikipedia, true story!
