The food this year has been pretty special and it’s all thanks to the guys at Fodality. Good friends and company-founders Kevin and Oliver really believe that eating balanced nutritious food is important for everyone, especially the hard working easa folk. Oliver is a talented and award winning chef with over 20 years experience in the catering industry. He has a passion for Mediterranean and fusion food, which is shared with Kevin who is the entrepreneur behind the business.

The workshop presentations took place at the St. Elmo exams center on Saturday the 1st of August. Though the room might have reminded us of Dante’s burning inferno, a varied collection of workshops and excited tutors helped the crowd to survive through the sweaty affair. Another salty waterfall was during the workshop fair in the dark and sauna-like atmosphere in one of the many tunnels in and around the site. With so many great choices to choose from, the participants were stretched to make up their mind but in the end everybody found their way to a workshop.
We can’t thank them enough for bringing us such a great selection of healthy dishes. Each night they are cooking 600 pieces of meat and fish, often barbecued right in front of us. Hello my dear EASAians, guess who’s back! That’s right, after a good rest on last year’s EASA I’m here again to spread the juicy details for you all to enjoy and take example off. EASA love often blooms well beyond the short two weeks. A good example of this arrived a few days ago, when a lucky Scot received a saucy package of ladies underwear from an old flame at EASA Symbiosis. Even the most mundane settings don’t take away from the chance for romance and washing your plate may be more appealing than you think as one participant found out when a guy asked her if she would like to grab a beer at the bar. She turned quickly to him and replied, “I don’t drink beer” and even wine was rejected. Awkward. But if you don’t try, you’ll never know! Early risers may receive a few shocks as they overlap with the night before. This week there have already been sightings of Serbia and Hungary forming links against a road sign next to the beach. With all the attractive people around and nice dark corners throughout the site, there’s surely a whole lot of love to come. I’ll keep you posted. And who am I linking with? I’ll never tell. You know it’s that time of the year, there’s a feeling growing inside of you, an unexplainable mix of emotions. EASA is here. For the new comers it’s hard to explain what it is about the dirty, messy surroundings, long queues and lack of privacy that makes us go year after year. But it doesn’t take many days to jump in to the fun and let go off the everyday routines you are used to associate with a civil society but that have now lost their meaning. EASA makes you feel a rollercoaster of feelings that you might not even expect up till now as the assembly has just began and to define EASA is close to impossible. Nonetheless, Alex Torpiano offered us with a beautiful association during the opening ceremony which seems to fit “an instrument of union”.

WHAT’S YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF EASA MALTA? SEAN ALBERT MAYL (MALTA) (Organizer) Within the Malta team, we came up with lots of proposals of different locations for the site, but finally we all agreed on choosing this place as the EASA’s site. The site is so much nicer with the use in it as it used to be the parking site. There is more life, it’s so nice to see people around socializing in this place with such a background. It was great to see people arriving, being amazed and impressed by the site. It’s working and we can feel the vibe in the air.
ALVARO GOMIS (SPAIN) (Helper) When coming to the site, I felt like an empire. You feel tiny like an ant, the scale is huge. We’ve been in schools, gas meters, gym areas but never something like this. The accommodation is brutal; I didn’t know the scaffolding was going to be so big, 600sqm! Funny sound with the wood, just like the music, not annoying but natural. This year the other helpers arrived and opened my mind. We feel unified together. The fortress is like a linking rope, all involved in the same orchestra, making things special.
LAURA DIETSCH (GERMANY) (Tutor) Sweaty! The site is fucking awesome! I think the architects will enjoy it a lot. This massive structure is beautiful and pure. When first seeing the accommodation, I thought this was gonna be hard but then the second night you thought you would miss it. The sound of the night and the wood, it reminds me of music. I’ve never had such a great food in EASA. The participants are great, a lot of new ones, as well some are at their 6th or 8th time. So we have lots of stories to tell. I have many good friends here. It’s always happy to see them again. It’s a really intense experience. I knew the Maltese team is very well organized, so that this year would be good. This EASA, you can’t get enough!
OSKAR ELLWANGER (GERMANY) (Participant) The heat makes you work and think slowly. It’s hard to make decision then. A strange place to be in. The evening is the nicest part because the temperature decreases. The bar opens and people get relaxed. Everything is exhausting during the day. I joined the Manifolds. It is quite intense. We’ve started lightly (folding papers). It demands lots of brainwork. The pure geometries can’t even follow your hands and you try to understand back forth. I am really looking forward to getting my suitcases back. They were missing at the airport. But hopefully I will get them this evening.
AURELIEN RABARY (FRANCE) (Participant) Very interesting! It is the first time that I participate in this kind of event. You meet people with different accents and cultures. I don’t understand the Irish because of the accent. The site is beautiful, it reminds me of Marseille. It’s very cool, very nice. The accommodation is really tough. It’s quite a problem, but sleeping is fun with alcohol, we sleep really well. It’s like a big guesthouse. But maybe we should do the same interview at the end. I’m sure it’s going to change. I’m impressed with the people, they are organized with mattress, etc. It’s like in every camping, it will be funny when it’s going to rain.
MARCOS ANTON & RACHEL GRAHAM (England) (Participants) M&R: The weather is fucking hot. The first impression was wondering where the bar was and after that we got fucking drunk. M: The food needs more olive oil, but we’ve been missing the Bulgarian cheese. I’ve never noticed the accommodation. R: The food is good. The accommodation is cosy, sociable, musical. But we’ve made lots of friends here. It’s easy to find people, good for flirting! M&R: It will be very cool with the French people and we’re working in the art gallery. We’ve got the air conditioner and you can poo easily because it’s clean. We are looking forward to EASATV because EASATV likes us.

Last night saw the beginning of the EASA Public lecture series set in the Pjazza Teatru Rjal. The space was part of a project by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop to convert the old Royal Opera House from 1866 in an open air venue for music and culture, and it played host last night to its own project architects, Antonio Belvedere, partner at RPBW.
The Scots put on a wild display of affectionate car washing today afternoon. Umbrella was impressed especially with Sam’s all-in attitude. Be sure to check EASA TV for a visual feast!
As the crowds from EASA and the city gathered in the floating seating over the bombed out ruins below, Belvedere gave an in-depth and fascinating presentation of his work on the Valletta City Gate Project. Belvedere talked on the history of the site and existing structures that were in place when the project began in 2009. He showed the commitment of the team to creating a finely detailed and welcoming entrance to the city which took a lot of pushing to get right. Some of the battles included fighting to close a street for a public bridge and opening a new quarry when there was no one providing hard stone in Malta. He talked in length on the design of the facade to the parliament which compliments the textures of the restored Bastian walls and when questioned seemed to have answer for absolutely everything. Tonight we look forward to hearing an engineers perspective from Bob Lang at 9pm.

MARKO STEVANOVIK (SERBIA) (Helper) Wonderful! I like this whiteness of the site. Also the scaffolding for the accommodation. It’s noisy but as long as I get dulled, I sleep like a baby. I feel great in corporation with other helpers. The water from the sink tastes like sea water, I drank it and I am still alive. The food is great. Party is not a problem, it happens all the time. Everything is different from previous years.
RRITA KALAVESHI (KOSOVO) (Participant) My first impression was that I didn’t know how I was going to sleep. I was stressed with the heat. But the nights were great. I am getting used to it. Actually the fun is more valuable. Just go out and forget all about the heat. The people are nice and friendly. Every day you meet new people from other countries, we share cultures. I just can’t wait for the national evening to try the different alcohols. We brought “rakija” with us but we already drank one of our bottle. With Ideefix, I feel like my childhood and sounds like it’s gonna be fun.
