See description in book. Other wise making a special guest appearance tonight is one of our favourite EASA guys. For those of you that have not met Léonard Gurtner (CH) before he is long running Participant, Tutor, NC, Helper, Organiser and now Lecturer.
The good news for you people that have been getting a little frustrated with long lectures and poor translations is that Léo promises us that his lecture should take less than half an hour as his Swiss origins ensure that everything will be focussed and efficiaent and he speaks perfect English, “I’d like to thank the organisers as its really cool to be invited to lecture, especially since EASA is for students by students”.

Léo’s presentation will deal with his proposal for creating a new public transport system, the theory is that creating a new highly efficent communal transport system would not only allow but almost force people with clashing ideals to interact with each other, even if this is only visually this allows everyone to see and accept each other as a human being, who needs to get to work shop and even pick up their kids
from school. The major terminals and junctions on this new public transport infrasttructure would be occupied with communal buildings and spaces that would act as a further platfrom for cultural interaction. EASA is run by students for students so perhaps the best part of this lecture is being able to enjoy a lecture from some one who is not a professional expert or lecturer but one of US. While yesterdays lecture investigated the theme of deCOASTruction in Spain, Leo’s lecture takes a different twist on it and introduces us to the similar theme in the Lebanon. The topic of his lecture is actually his final year thesis from the ETH Lauzanne where he recieved top marks. The Lebanon is also a country which has suffered alot of negitive over developement along the coast, mainly due to large groups of people evacuating the city during the war times. We can all agree that all the pieces the participants from PARA-MAT produced, generated a lot of attention among people at the bar. They might look like a giant spider web, but their aim is definitely a very sensible one to the needs of EASA participants this year, creating temporary seating and gathering places. The workshop first started with participants going around Cadiz and looking for the best spots for their structures, on the way evolving the function they would like to achieve from these structures. Later, trials and small working models were experimented on using elastic bands and weaving them together, later evolving to larger models with the use of inner bicycle rubber tubes. The final shape of the structure is not final yet, the main aim of the participants being to create a space which would be defined by their structure, hence creating spaces in which the inhabitants of Cadiz can sit on and walk through at the same time. The final structure will be installed in 3 different locations around the city,
moved from one place to other and adapting to the needs of that spot. The locations include Plazuela del Tío de la Tiza, another one at the botanical gardens of Parques Genoves and at the Walls next to Plaza de España; one taking place on the 2nd and the 3rd, the other, on the 4th and 5th and the final one on the 6th of August. and Jesse (AUS) all seem to go along pretty well and enjoying not only the workshop, but also a siesta at the beach every day. In Jake`s words himself “the final structure will include patterns of repeated geometric shapes, intertwining to form the grid”. Guess we`ll have to wait and see what they come up with, though it sounds really promising.

Urban Body transplant Tutors: James Brazil (AU), Cesar Daoud (LB/FR), Susanna Tesconi (ES) This tutorial based workshop is one of few also working at night; they have earlier in the week been out trying out the Led-light glows to create potential urban volumes. In this way it’s possible to document a (very) temporary structure without getting stopped by the police. With this glows and long exposure photo you can easily understand the structure´s ability to transform the site. The other day they were discussing rope with the Avanzada workshop, got some knowledge on knots and created a 1/1 sketch volume by framing it with their red cords. “It´s nice to use ropes as a building material, you have an idea and you just put it up.” Said Josh (UK). We joined the team yesterday when they gathered up at school and took off for the park at the harbor, the site of the day. Cesar (Tutor) has before been working on creating sound scenes and told us about how they use techniques to clean the soundscape. And in this way the listener gets a clearer perception of the sound. They have also used mirror glasses, with these on you only see upwards and
changing your perspective of the city. With these one you disconnect with you easily body. To get a flying start Urban Body Plant begins every day with some games. We joined and got a good workout in “Twister”. James says “it works very well, we have a great group spirit and the team seems really to have bonded and are hanging out after the workshop.” The games are also a way to experience and interact with the urban space. The tutors have a lot of experience of this kind of urban activities through their uA Collective. Theme: Wasteland- and don’t worry there seems to be plenty of it there.
INCM Copenhagen saw one of the most intensive bidding sessions in the history of EASA with the discussions going on over 2 days with NCs unable to come to a quick consensus about who to choose between Sebia and Finland. After alot of blood sweat and tears Finland finally came out victorious. The Finnish will be hosting a special evening introducing us to next years event after the Excursion Day on Monday, but we here at Umbrella are able to provide you with a little sneak peak at whats on the cards for next year,
Team: our favourites Ville and Pekka who are busy working on their workshop consrete construction but still managed to take some time out to talk to umbrella about their plans in more detail.
Location: Finland obviously, but more specifically in Suvilahti Power Plant in Helsinki.
Drinks: as well as the usuall beer, they are hoping to have a special drink called “lonkero” which technically translates as “tenticle of the octopus”, whats in it?? Well thats a surprise. Food: easa style dinners of pasta and stews are sure to be making a strong appearance, but the finnish are hoping to treat us to Reindeer on one of the nights! Parties: Crazy days and nights are
on the cards for the easa participants in search of a bit of socialising. Especially days, seeing as the nights are only going to be 3 hours long! Excursions: So far nothing architectural on the books but trips to islands/forests/zoo/themepark/ lakes are all good possibilities. Want to see more before Monday? Siesta Facts

The Siesta has existed for thousands of years and was previously regarded as a physical necessity rather than a luxury. While the traditional Spanish style siesta can last for up to two hours to avoid the hottest part of the day, there is actually a biological need for people in all climates to have a short rest in the afternoon to revive energy levels. The form of rest recommended for health and productivity benefits is a short 10-20 minute nap, and not the 2 hour long siesta normally associated with Spain, enjoyable as that may be! Research shows that the majority of people suffer from tiredness twice in every 24 hour period. We are what's called Bi-phasic; we need two periods of sleep; a long one at night and a shorter one during the day. The early afternoon brings a drop in energy levels, not as severe as night time, but sufficient to make it difficult to concentrate and think clearly. By having
a short nap we can help ourselves think more clearly by more productive and reduce the risk of heart disease. Tiredness can also be a cause of accidents. A short 10-20 minute nap is all that is needed to restore our concentration, alertness and improve productivity for the afternoon. Famous people who napped: - Bill Clinton napped while President of the United States to help him cope with the pressures of office. - Brahms napped at the piano while he composed his famous lullaby. - Napoleon napped between battles while sitting on his horse. - Churchill maintained that he had to nap in order to cope with his wartime responsibilities.
- Famous Geniuses such as Edison and da Vinci napped. - Einstein napped frequently during the day to help him think more clearly. He would sit in his favourite armchair with a pencil in his hand and purposefully doze off. He would wake when the pencil dropped, ensuring he did not enter a deep sleep from which it would be difficult to wake up. Biological need for naps In recent years, studies have suggested that we have a biological need for afternoon naps. Contrary to popular belief, eating lunch does not bring on drowsiness, although a heavy lunch, carbohydrates and alcohol can make us more tired. Our ‘biological clock’ regulates certain bodily functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature and hormonal secretions as well as telling us when we need to rest, to maintain health and wellbeing. The Circadian Rhythm regulates daily rhythms in the body. Studies show that there is a strong biological tendency for humans to become tired and possibly fall asleep in the early or mid afternoon as well as at night. After all, napping does not make up for serious sleep deficiency.

Well thankfully while browsing the archives of Umbrella we were able to bring you the article from the 4th of August 2009 in Italy that started it all. While the
original article might have been in jest (the showers are unfortunatly of water, not sangria) it didn’t take much to motivate Fran to start the process that has become EASA Spain 2011. Following a short preparation period and tense EASA bidding session at INCM Liechtenstein against
Romainia, the Spainish team won the right to host this years event.

Lecture review MEDIO MUNDO ARQUITECTOS Medio Mundo which began in 2005 and acts more as an urban think tank which spends a great deal of its time working on competitions. Medio Mundo spent a great deal of the lecture last night intellectualising the notion of how people use language to delineate architecturual styles and define what architecture itself is. They challenged contemporary definitions of the city as being subjective, namely Koolhaas’ concept of the ‘Generic City’.
‘architecture is a means to be placed’. Media Mundo expressed interesting ideas and means whereby the people of a place may override spoken language, and bypass bureaucracy with a new framework of symbols. A new language whereby the people identify
urban spaces that need to be reappropriated in a more diplomatic manner. The lecture then went on to explain specific projects which are now complete. Umbrella says; unfortunately the lecture missed a certain punch to keep the audience interested for two hours.
EASA013? Who will host EASA 2013? Since we have provided some interesting information about the origin of this years Spanish EASA we have decided to investigate who else may be interested in the 2013 bid. Well the rumor mill is in full operation with a few countrys having come to the attention of umbrella. Serbia: After last years intense bidding session, Serbia lost out to finland by the smallest of margins. However the Serbs hate to lose (see tall compitition) and are fronting a very strong team this year again. We asked Marko Vukovic, tutor of Pimp my Space what the story was with Serbia planning on bidding this year, his response “No Comment” Malta: This is Official after having a brief chat with Maltiese NC Elaine Bonavia she confirmed that they were currently in the process of discussing with local officials and seeking the support of various institutions. While no official town or city has been confirmed they were eager to stress that it would be in a harbour region, maybe a peninsula with lots of forts,
historic buildings and local activities. So far bid preparations are being under take by a group of roughly 7 lead people. The theme is still as yet undecided and will depend alot on the final location. Scotland: While this country does not technically exist yet as it is still part of the UK, the UK group will be dissolving into its separate countries after this year. While there are no NCs and
this is the groups first time in EASA they have still been heard discussing the possibility of having a EASA in Inverness. Umbrella says: hold the enthusiasim boys try organising a INCM or SEASAM first. Any other countries considering bidding report to the Umbrella desk.

R eviews Umbrella In order to complete the set of workshop reviews I have been drafted in to provide some unbiased perspective on this most high profile, but also little understood meta workshop. Umbrella was part of the first EASA in 1981 and has been providing news, bulletins, workshop reviews, gossip and on occasion flagrant lies in every EASA (and some INCMs) ever since and in a year when scandal has hit some of the biggest newspapers in the world, media moguls Rupert and James Murdoch would do well to take a look at Umbrella, EASAs own inhouse newspaper. Situated in a makeshift office in the bar it would be easy to dismiss Umbrella as a refuge for the lazy, but putting aside a jealousy of working location, some facts are undeniable - Umbrella is the most pressurised workshop on campus, having to produce output for consumption by 472 EASAians every day. The role of the tutors is vital to the success of the paper, not only in the functional issues of editing, layout and printing, but also navigating the fine line of fun and relevance. Speaking with tutor Cecily Weeks (IR) she is quick to pour credit of success on participants noting that it is them who choose the stories to follow. According to Cess the appeal of the participating in the workshop is in the ability to work solo or in a team, to mix with other workshops and to write the news not be the news - to the members of umbrella "the pen is mightier than the saw(d)". This year the paper has taken an editorial sstance to focus on the newest members of the EASA family , evidenced by the EASA dictionary and daily workshop reviews. Likewise the paper is for the people by the people if you want something typed or want your opinion read by everyone, all you have to do is type it and hand it in or email it to the editors. /Chris Maloney for Umbrella
Emerging Space Every civil space needs interventions. The main goal is to motivate the citizens into modifying their city with temporary and easily changeable structures. The primary building components are black fruit baskets, which are quite light and easy to carry around. The building blocks can be used as chairs and tables, and also as constructive components for some temporary intervention. Their biggest project so far was on the square around the flamenco school. We also pass through their arc at info point. All in all they are fun and constructive workshop. We can hope to see their future interventions around the city.
Tapaland The Spanish word tapa actually means a plate, at least now it does. It used to represent the lid on the beer mugs (to keep the flies and other bugs away). The idea was to place a little snack at the top of the mug, an olive or a piece of ham. Nowadays any dish can represent tapa. That is why any country can participate in this part-time workshop. They make national specialties for everybody to taste. It is the best way to get a hold of the atmosphere of some nation (besides the drinks on the National Evening). Today we had a Finnish salad – so we don’t get way too dry from the food we eat at the bar.

The Devolution of the UK... By Sam Patterson EASA and the UK have had a beautiful 31yr relationship that will end in 8 days time as the four component countries of the UK will represent themselves in Helsinki 2012. England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. As is enevidable with EASA, counties and teams go througha cycle of strength and energy, the UK peaked its current cycle in Manchester 2010 ending a decade that saw the UK team grow from a country failing to fill a basic quota to the delivery of EASA’s flagship event, and questions within the team were once again being raised about an English dominated team and the UK’s identity within EASA.
National Evening Exclusive
National Evening is the most anticipated night of the assembly and is so close you can smell it in the air. Today Umbrella did a little investigatory journalism and asked what is each country planning? Switzerland – Absinthe and Lampions Ireland – a real leprechaun, Irish coffee and traditional Irish stew. UK – expect water, so wear white tshirts. No bra’s preferred. Sweden – Reenacting Swedish National Holiday called ‘Glögg’. France – ‘in the end, puke.’ Serbia – injuries and blood. Finland – ‘fin’grea.

As a result a proposal was made at the following INCM in Copenhagen for the EASA network to recognise the component countries of the UK, that are united under the one crown. The backbone of the proposal was that people from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales do not acknowledge the UK as thier ‘country’, rather that the UK is a collection of nations each with its own culture and traditions that are currently under represented at EASA. EASA NC’s agreed, and so the next cycle of a devolved UK team is begining. Within the ranks of this final British team are 7 students from the Glasgow School of Art, who are representing Scotland, 1 dino... me and 6 fresh faced newbies, two of whom will become Scottish NC’s at the end of Cadiz. As for Northern Ireland and Wales, efforts this year have gone unrewarded with no completed applications despite a few enquires. I regretfully inform you of two ‘lost’ countries going into 2012. At this time of significant change
within the UK team im announcing my retirement as UK NC to allow the next generation to take charge, a new NC| will be selected to join Jenny Burns as English NC’s. --->Life goes on and so does EASA.

Bulgaria – A big surprise! Greece – Striking and protesting! Malta – A performance in traditional Maltese dress. Slovenia – will prepare Zganje and sladoled z bucnim oljen. Just remember everyone – National Evening is a marathon and not a sprint, so Umbrella says be careful kids and pace yourself!

Loo k a l i k es Umbrella Apology Many of you might have been grumbling about the lack of recent issues of umbrella, so in an attempt to clear up any questions we are providing this explaination and apology. Since we started printing full issues, we have had continus problems with the photo copier, which culminated in us only being able to print 29 issues yesterday. In an attempt to make sure that umbrella keeps a high profile as well as showcasing the hard work of our participants, we have started printing A4 copies and taping them on the walls at the info point, toilets, corriors and in the bar. Umbrella is also using strings to attach copies of umbrella to various parts of the bar area so that people don’t take them away. Please continue to read Umbrella in anyway possible.
