W O R K S H O P. R E V I E W S 3 LITTLE PIGS Chris Maloney(UK) Miles Reay-Palmer (UK) This workshop deals the improvement of architecture both physically and theoretically. While approaching this subject on a large level scale can be kind of mind boggling the workshop has decided to focus on it in a the micro scale of EASA. How to improve your EASA, well this can be done on in really simple way and not many of you will know that this is the workshop responsible for the toilet roll holders in the ladies toilets. Apart from watching films such as “the story of stuff” and “o’dearisms” the workshop has been creating a discussion space near the umbrella desk. Ironically enough “Pimp my space” workshop has been using this pimped out space for their workshop. With about 6 participants they some seem to be enjoying it and the group can often be seen in heavy discussion. The ultimate goal of this workshop is still unclear and depends alot on what the particiapants decide. • A book • An exhibition • A video • A construction made out of random stuff?? We will see at a later date. /CQW

Se(a)stain Marie Vanderghote (BE), Hanne Vermeiren (BE), Jose Alfonso Ortiz (CHL) Busy working, participants and tutors still had some time to spare for UMBRELLA. A lot of things have been done in the past few days, and works seem to be going just fine. The space for the windows in the container has been cut, the frame for the green roof is finished, and all the painting has been done. However, that`s not all, and much more work needs to be dealt with. The flooring and ventilation system are

still under construction, having the base made from reused pallets and the ducts for the ventilation placed in between. Then, wood panels should be placed over for the final finish. Energain panels are to be placed in the doors, having liquid inside them, which are used for cooling down the container. Stone bricks, which will be stuck to the walls to take out humidity, still have to be made and then fixed. A tent will also be constructed, which will then be set up and used to cover the whole container. This workshop is very promising, an innovative one, with Marie (tutor) claiming that participants are “very enthusiastic, it`s incredible!”

EASA Kitchen

Sandsation

Umit Mesci (TR)

Ivan Grcic (RS) Nikola Grabacic (RS/UK) Predrag Apostolidis(RS)

Basically, this is how a day for an EASA Kicthen participant works out. 1. The participants together with their tutor, Umit, start their day with a discussion, suggesting what could be done for the day. 2. Later, they all head to the city and go around open air markets and supermarkets looking at all the ingredients that could be incorporated in their menu. 3. Once this is done, they head to a local café` and finalize their options. 4. cook the food and sell it. Unfortunately, we might not be expecting any delicious food from EASA Kitchen today (they needed a break!), but a lot of great stuff is promised for the days to come. Umit (tutor) explained how this workshop will now be changing its strategy, with their focus being more on the city itself, hence creating more interaction with the inhabitants of Cadiz. Participants would be going around the streets of this old city and inspiring themselves from what they experience around them, and also gathering recipes from local people. They also aim to work with other workshops, as happened with the case of Sticky Art. All this sounds very promising and we should be expecting a surprise in the coming days!

Who is that making all the noise in the corner of the bar disturbing the media workshops? Sandsation? OK lets go see what they are up to.

EASA FM Clemens Conditt(AT), Thomas Klein(AT), Jakob Braun(DE), Verena Theil(IT) These guys are on track. Their daily broadcasts are echoing to all the corners of EASA. All this doesn’t just happen. It takes organisation. You will see this when you get a chance to visit the EASA FM crew up in their broadcasting room. You will notice their pin board time schedule, which is not just practical. It is also quite aesthetic. Their schedule allows for input from all EASAians. So if you want to contribute, pop buy at EASA FM and have your favourite playlist ripped from your iPod!

Tutor Ivan Grcic (RS) explained that the Sellotape forms are appearing in the corner of the bar are meant to represent the large palm trees that are scattered across Cadiz. "We are making a series of fallen tree sculptures, then adding loads of sand to create a mini beach. I hope they will be strong enough to act as benches. We might need more tape" With national evening tonight, there was speculation in the group as to whether the tree may be used as a lovebox. Nikola (RS), tutor, said "well it's see through, so you'll have to be careful you don't get caught!" They are a day or two ahead of schedule, the third tutor, Predrag (RS) explained, and after seeing EASA.TV, boasted "we easily have the best participants!" I'm not sure about that, but if you could keep it down in future that would be great!

• EASA.TV • Emerging Space

EASA.TV Andreas Nordstrom (SE) Hugo Pointillart (FR) Giula Nardi (IT) After the success of the first episode of EASA.TV, we caught up in our media stable for a review on how the first week has been for our sister workshop. His summation of the first week was that "it has been Super Awesome". He was a little worried that National Evening had disrupted plans for a scheduled episode tonight, but they will push it back to tomorrow. Otherwise the are right on schedule and are working on next weeks shows. "Everybody is up to speed", Andreas tells me "so people just get on with their work, and we meet regularly to make sure there are no overlaps." Particpant/tutor Hugo P praised his mentor, saying that Andy was "Super Awesome. He really knows how to exploit and focus my creativity." Rumour has it that this year will be Andreas' last as EASA.TV tutor, so maybe he is grooming somebody as his replacement? When pressed for an answer Andreas denied all rumours, describing them as "unfounded". When is the next episode of EASA.TV you ask, well rumour is they might have something special planned for National Evening!

Emerging Space Ewa Szymczyk(PL) Malgorzata Spasiewicz(PL) Has Emerging Space been taken over by kids? They have certainly managed to interact with the younger population of Cadiz. Participant Jon Pyle (UK) tells Umbrella: “We place out the boxes, the kids move them, we shout at the kids, we place out the boxes and the kids move them again.” It has been interesting but they are now also going to look for sites with some what older audiences.

Tutor Ewa is happy with the workshop this far. “It was difficult to predict how this workshop was going to turn out. It depends of the sites and the people who inhabit it. We also want to give our participants the opportunity to form the workshop. I think we learn something new every day”. They now take a day at EASA HQ to make plans how to proceed with the second half of EASA. The first week was about experimenting, see how people react and learn from that, try to interact. They now enter the second half of EASA trying our bigger designs, aiming at one big structure, before going out in the city again. /Kajsa Börjesson

EL PARASOL • Pimp my Space • Urban Body Transplant

Pimp mySpace Marko Vukovic (RS) Milos Zivkovic (RS) Janko Tadic (RS) Locatated ironically enough in a space that was originally pimped out for as a discussion space for 3 little pigs, Pimp my space had the following to say: Did you take a shower last night at the atrium? Then consider yourself officially pimped out! The bitches did a great job by making cyclical animations (which were projected to the shower screen). Our pimps are very proud of them. The cultural impact was immense! One of the Russian girls confessed she had a panic attack from the awesomeness of this incredible VJ-ing quite experience. The usual passengers watched enviously at this epic

event. I feel sorry for them, because they’ll never reach this level of cool. Their future plans are to make even longer animations with better effects.

Urban body transplant Cesar Daoud(LB/FR) James Brazil(AU) Natalja Boljsakov(RS) Situated in the big tent, participants were working and finalizing the structure for the performance instal-

lation. However, before this could be done, a lot of walking around Cadiz was involved, with the participants going to the city every night and testing various sites. A whole 3 days of experimenting led the participants of this workshop to decide upon small structures, using various materials such as wood, rope and fishing lines, their main aim being to interact with the local people and create an emotion among passersby. Two new installations are also being worked on, and these are to be left in the streets of Cadiz. One of the aims of this workshop is to reduce the pressure that was created on the coast in the past decades and spreading it around the city. UBT is also collaborating with AVANZADA, supplying them with installation spaces that can be placed inside the pavilion. The final result from this workshop includes both an experience of vision and sound, definitely a very promising result for the closing ceremony.

• CADIZIGN • SMALL INTERVENTIONS

CADIZIGN Natalja Dozdeva (LV) Zakhar Bogdalov (LV) Antonina Bogdalova (LV) The main idea is to find a futuristic and unconventional urban plan for the city of Cadiz. They’ve already had a few lectures about cities’ history, urban development strategies, infographics, layouts… The participants were quite busy at the moment when Umbrella tried to ask them a few questions they directed us to the tutors who provided us with a general description of whats going on. The workshop is apparently making some proposals of the interventions in the urban society. They’ll be making montages, drawings and a lot of infographics like the most important method of communication and diagnostic tool, so if your passing the Itlab check it out. Everybody is working on their individual projects which are supposed to be very fun but still based on the environment of Cadiz. Where are they doing this? Well the IT lab of course, this is the working space for this workshop, who hope to create a graphic booklet by the end of EASA.

SMALL INTERVENTIONS Julian Grossman(DE) Malte Wittenberg(DE) At Small Interventions the designs are being pushed forward, working with 1:50 models. The proposals are all about the context and adding value. An array of interesting sites across the city have been reduced to 6 or 7 favourites. Next week will be about on-site experiments and building. Mirrors are among the themes being developed

and building will commence as soon as the materials arrive. In a weeks time we will be able to track down all the small interventions by a map that they will be handing out.

EL PARASOL • PARA-MAT • CLOUD

PARA-MAT Roland Dániel Németh(HU) Anett Farkas(HU) We just reviewed Para-mat yesterday but umbrella spoke to one of this workshop’s tutors, Roland (HU) and we have more updates. Late last night Para-Mat received a large delivery of materials and now with their site analysis complete and design just about finalized, they are delighted to announce that they are about to begin construction on the final product. Para-mat plan to create a prefabricated module that can be adapted to each of the three sites on demand. The first of the three sites is Planzuela del Tio de la Tiza where Para-mat plan to team up with the local flamenco dancers and easa participants to showcase a small performance. The second site is the botanical gardens and the third is

CLOUD Pavle Stamenovic (RS) Jelena Mitrovic(RS) Davor Eres(RS) The cloud workshop are scaling up their experiments. After a day or two of smaller experiments outside, a group of participants have hermetically sealed one of the rooms in the locked down shower and filling it with columns of bubbles. "They are made of washing up liquid with Helium blown through it," Irina (MCD) explained. "They are quite dense and stick together, so should form a structure that last for a short time, then disapears. Like a Cloud!" Some questionable health and safety issues aside, the result is a beautifully delicate installation, so you should keep an eye on whatever else these guys create in the next week.

Plaza de Espana (this is just by the nightclubs in la marina) so Para-mat intend this space to be a chillout area after some drinks and dancing. Para-

• AVANZADA • SMART ENERGY CONSTRUCTION

AVANZADA Kieran Donellan (IE), Garrah “third nipple” Breathnach (IE) This workshop seems to be a little quiet today, however work was still getting done. The floor pieces are cut, which these will then be placed in the steel structure that is to form the base for the exhibition space. The structure is made up of 2 parts, which will be then be transferred to the actual site. Materials are to arrive tomorrow, thus work is aimed to kick start again in the next few days. Tomorrow, Monday, is all about preparation for Tuesday, where the whole team will shift their works outside Campo del Sur, to the city itself. Participants will then be divided in smaller teams, which will work in shifts on the structure itself, hence participants are more alert and better work can be achieved Around 2.7 km of rope is to be used for this pavilion. Experiments were performed using a goal post and rope to assess if the system actually works. Even though the concept and idea were quite clear from the start, the tutors explained how the participants all gave their ideas, influencing the final design for the exhibition space. If all permits are settled, the pavilion can be installed and made to last from 3 to 5 years. This installation is also an opportunity for local artists and students to display their works and also interact with the space itself. Tomorrow participants will be handing out manifestos for all those interested, their aim being that the pavilion will host art inspired by the concept of the space itself.

SMART ENERGY COASTRUCTION Polo Maselli(IT) Alper Kurbak (TR) Urtza Uriarte(ES) José Ballesteros López(ES) Visit the smart energy coastruction workshop and you will find a competitive atmosphere. Behind the

school on the basketball field where we once had our trickling `hot` showers in the changing rooms, now are arising several alternatives. Different teams are constructing their variation of a solar heated shower. Be it a solar heated bucked, a massive tube cage or a graphic tube line tracing across the sky, time will tell which approach will be most successful. Be it in hotness or in shower comfort.

EL PARASOL • ORGADIZ • TAPALAND

ORIGADIZ Frederik De Smedt (BE), Alper Derinbogaz (TR) Finally work seems to be in full swing for this workshop, with all the members of the team busy doing different stuff to try and get back in the game after problems were encountered with materials. Few were sanding, others cutting the wood, all getting them ready so they could be varnished. All the plans are ready for the final assembling of the pavilion, which is going to be installed in Paseo de Canalejas, the spot chosen for the installation. All the pieces will be transferred on site once ready, assembled there, where later cladding would also be added. Everyone seems to be eager to get the pieces done as fast as possible so as to get out of the tent, and actually work on the project at the chosen spot. Well good luck guys!

TAPALAND Stef Bogaerds (NL) Tomas Dirrix (NL) Martin Dashorst (NL) The tutors Thomas and Stef (NL) believe the workshop has been an astonishing success so far and they accredit this to a number of factors. Firstly, TapaLand is based on authentic dishes from a different country everyday, and as all the produce is purchased in the local Cadiz market the morning before the dish is cooked and served - this in itself makes for good quality food that accurately portrays what the dish should like, minus a few small compromises for the Spanish version of unavailable ingredients. As easa for lots of participants is as much about experiencing foreign cultures as it is about architecture, Tapaland adds another layer of stimulation to the assembly.

Secondly it adds to the festival like atmosphere of easa. As the food is all cooked in the bar area it makes the whole experience very natural and organic and allows even passers by to become involved with the cooking experience from beginning to end.

intended!) of easa just like easa tv or umbrella. They believe that maybe future easa’s could be completely self sufficient whereby each country would cook food for one evening and the workshop tutors could oversee each meal.

Both Thomas and Stef believe that if the food workshops continue as they have began for the remainder of the assembly that a food workshop could become a staple workshop (no pun

Umbrella says; Expect tapas from Estonia, Italy, Serbia, Hungry and more over the next fews days and looking forward to food in Helsinki!

materials, but shouldn’t overshadow the goals having been set. The workshop space of Super Percetion looks promising. Up on the second floor they have covert the walls of their workshop space with curious but beautiful maps and scattered around the room are Buckminster Fuller reminiscent structures made out of discarded cups. All seems ready and set for an explosive week of constructing as the workshop starts work on their final installation. A workshop to keep your eye on, as it might just turn out to be quite a perceptual experience.

This is one workshop that has had its ups and downs over the last few days but today it went all guns blazing. And it seems the authorities of Cadiz find it hard to handle the flamboyant graphics that this workshop is producing at a rate of knots. After just three hours the workshop had almost completed a 10 by 5 metre graphics that echoed the concrete forms that are found piled along the shore.

All the participants seem to be really enjoying the workshop and are excited about what is to come over the next few days. There is talk also that there may be an animation for easa day compiled of different stills adapted to tell a short story. Umbrella says; This is one workshop to look out for!

EL PARASOL • SNOWGLOBE- last workshop reviewed today, thanks for not letting us know where you were!

SNOWGLOBE Arnaud Kinnaer (BE) Charly Fortis (BE) Denis Adnet (FR) The last workshop to get seen this afternoon, and what a result! I caught the guys as they were packing up for the day and walked back with them to the school. Just this afternoon they have managed to construct a large pavillion from hundreds of shipping pallets in the park (take note Fred/Alper!).

Standing about 2m high at the moment, they planned to finish it to 3m and put a roof on it tomorrow. When I reminded them of excursion they looked disheartened, "oh well, the next day then", Irish Barry chirped. What motivation! He explained to me that the pavilion

would have some secret steps to enter the space in the middle, which would be laid out in hammocks and chairs, etc. "It's meant to emphasise the disconnection between locals and tourists," Barry answered when I asked him why it was so big. "Also because it looks pretty friggin' cool."

• LA COMETA

LA COMETA = Kite in Spanish

The participants = comets New Stars over Cadiz = Kite Tinatin Gurgenidze (Georgia) Alkistis Thomidou ( Greece) Thomas Schmitt (Germany) Martin Michette (UK) This week has mostly been about experiments with the wind and fly-

ing kites, doing the first drafts and prototypes. The participants have all the freedom they need for creating their own idea of a kite. Several tetrahedrons have been flying over Cadiz yesterday. The workshop wanted to adapt to the wind and to its nature, trying to understand the relationship between wind and structures. Wind is moving/blowing and that seems clear to

everyone, but LA COMETA is trying to visualise exactly that. The final idea is also created with the participants and tutors. The result is the quintessence of the first week and will be realised between tuesday untill the end. For the final presentation it is also planned to audio visualise the wind, so there will be a series of small installation.

WILDLIFE Karolina Konecka (PL) Miguel Setas (PT) Since the last time we sat down with the tourist stalking tutors they have moved into phase two of the workshop, which involves interacting with the tourists of Cadiz. A series of small interactive exercises, designed to engage and confuse the targets, were played out in the streets. They asked the EASA population for suggestions for flashmobs (you may have seen the box in the corridoor) and the first of these happened the other day, with about 50 people charging across Cadiz, being chased by our very own San Fermin bull. "It was really successful, and we are hoping the next flashmobs will be even bigger," Karolina told me. To make a big object seems to be very difficult. “ Annie fills in:“ But we have a strong group so we are happy.” Laura: “Fun but chaotic”. During the previous days they have played around with plaster. For example using the sand as a mould

by pouring in plaster in a shape in the sand. I went looking for the tutors and find Ville collecting their tools. He is hoping for new materials after having a day off tomorrow. “Time will show” what is going to happen with the workshop. • (Inter)-National Evening

National Evening History Its National evening tonightyou might have heard. So whats is it? Something to do with Rakia and police helecopters? At EASA the only way to separate myth from shit that happened is to talk to someone that was there. So continuing this oral tradition i sat down with EASA vetran, DJ and all round nice guy Martin Dashorst(NL) at the “discuss” table in the bar to reminiss and piece together fragents from the last 8 EASAs. It turns out this cornerstone of EASA tradition is only 6 years old! Before 2005 pop up, unschedualed events would happen through out the two weeks with much less enphasis on the boozing, its said the Spainish even did a flamenco workshopsounds nice. For 2005 the super Swiss decided organiseation is the key to fun and placed a space on the timetable on the evening before excursion for all countries to have a space and table in the sports hall, and so National Evening(NE) as we know it was born. The hungarian organisers liked it soo much they copied the format this time with all 40+ countries squeezed into the long narrow space of the pleasure boat. Memorable tables anonst the sensory overload that resulted included Russia’s “porno sushi”(fish in vodka consumed as a shot) and Romania’s warm polinka with chilliphoto booth. True to the spirit of “the boat” EASA, the party moved from the sweaty corridor to the showers. A greek innovation for 2007 was a short parade from the accomodation to the venue. Memorable highlights include – a Danish gay marrage table. The night was a bit rough on some and when it came to the clean up in the morning Kotrina (LI) and Fergus (IE) were seen literally sweeping up participants. Martin assures me there is footabe which appears to indicate Christoph Holtz (UK) was among the humam detrius. For many in attendance Irelands approach in 2008 was the highpoint so far. Situated in the West

coast of Ireland in a tiny village the organisers were limited in options for nights out and spread NE out over 4 nights. It rsulted in more space for each country to occupy and gave much clearer memories of each table and event. Innovation at an all time high there seemed to be too many memorable events to cover here, but Martin picks out the Danish long boat invasion, Dutch stage hi-jacking and enforced games, the functional Finnish sauna with a total nude door policy and the UK village with tea, maypole and queue to be the creme de la creme. However let us not forget Yugoslavia reunited, this saw the gathering of all the former Yugoslav states in matching hats undertaking some epic chanting on the stage! Italy saw the reversion to a single night version, this time open air. The finns feature again with the “eat the penis”(sausage) challenge, while Portugal get a mention for setting fore to Neal Patterson(IE) and Joe Frames(UK) shoes. Once again the brevity didn’t end when the booze ran ry with the UK organising an “insane” game of British Bulldog which Martin describes as “200 drunk people running at each other”. Even later

still the ever enthusiastic team were seen passing the Danish teams into the face of sleeping drunkards. EASA 010’s NE is the freshest in memory. Predictably (I’m begining to see a pattern) Martin picks out the Dutch, this time coupled with the Spainish as a personal high. The identity switch allowed a revival of their recent world cup rivalry. So there it is 6 years old today and still going. NE has firmly placed its self inthe heart of every EASA. It is true that the focus of attention all in one night has somewhat killed innovation spread accross the event (apart from the spanish sangria night which is still held on a separate night), it seems now we all rely on the organsisers for our evening entertainment (I’m reminded of some words of wisdom from Kasja(SW) at Italy “you are the party; if the party is boring, you are boring) Overall national evening is amazing though, giving every nation the platform to represent itself. I can’t wait to see whos table excells tonight and the creativity that abouds. Chris Maloney(UK).

TAB – Tallinn Architecture Biennale September 8-11, 2011 Tallinn Architecture Biennale is a new architecture forum that brings together theory and practice, young and experienced architects in order to arouse rich discussion over architecture, urban planning and landscape issues. First TAB concen-

trates on the hybrid issue of Landscape Urbanism. Our hope is to see landscape urbanism as so-called ’third way’, which can possibly solve urban problems that have proved too difficult for traditional planning because of rapid processes, constant change and instability. Landscape urbanism could also provide answers how to guide urban processes from inside, so that the system as a whole still maintains a balance. The term ’landscape’ is used primarily as the model for consistency, responsiveness and scale. TAB comprises of three main events: symposium Landscape Urbanism (curated by Katrin Koov),

Lecture Review Last night we had the pleasure of being entertained by Leo Gutner (CH) and his thesis project on the dispersion of the Lebanese population in Beirut and possible solutions to the problem of movement. He presented his project, a maritime transportation and exchange hub which grows to accomodate further growth in trade and movement. The second lecture by Eva Morales of La Panaderia (The Bakery) took this idea further when presented some built projects. Heavily influenced by industrial building methods and prefabrication, designs for cheap school canteens and a "choose your own finishings" housing provided an interesting response to contextualised place-making.
